Premier League 2022/23 fixtures: FPL captaincy rotation

The much-anticipated fixture list for the 2022/23 Premier League season was released on Thursday morning.

Fantasy Premier League (FPL) hasn’t yet relaunched for the upcoming campaign but Fantasy managers have inevitably already started mentally drafting their Gameweek 1 squads based on the newly available schedule.

And we’re no different, as here we take a look at the captaincy conundrums and premium pick pickles that may present themselves in the first quarter of 2022/23.

CAPTAINCY MATRIX – FIRST 10 GAMEWEEKS

Premier League 2022/23 fixtures: A first look at FPL captaincy and premium picks 1

While we of course haven’t seen the prices for the new FPL campaign, we can be pretty sure that most of us will be eyeing up at least two of Erling Haaland, Mohamed Salah, Son Heung-min, Harry Kane and, potentially, Kevin De Bruyne in our Gameweek 1 squads.

Then there are the prolific points-scorers at the back from these clubs, such as Joao Cancelo, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andrew Robertson, and mid-price alternatives such as Dejan Kulusevski and Luis Diaz who we may have to turn to in order to accommodate heavy hitters elsewhere.

In a nutshell, assets from Manchester City, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur will not only be eating up a huge chunk of our budget but also dominating the captaincy discussion.

In the below image, we’ve picked out what we deem to be the stand-out fixtures in each of the first 10 Gameweeks from these three clubs only.

Why is Man U a light red fixture for Liverpool?

Dark red would probably be overstating the difficulty until we see how they get on under Hag a bit

Now now don't be too quick to dismiss new manager bounce and home crowd. It should probably be white

A few early scribbles on premiums/captaincy above, now that the start of the season is a mere seven weeks away 😀

It's a mad old thought but you could feasibly not captain any Liverpool player in the first six GWs:

    GW1: Son/Kane - Sou (h)
    GW2: Haaland/KDB - Bou (h)
    GW3: Son/Kane - Wol (h)
    GW4: Son/Kane - Nfo (a)
    GW5: Haaland/KDB - Nfo (h)
    GW6: Son/Kane - Ful (h)

GW1/4 being the weeks where you can strongly argue that Liverpool have the better fixture.

You're certainly selling me on sticking to Haaland/Son/Diaz over trying to fit Salah in. Guess I'll have to see how things look in preseason, not averse to Kane+Son double-up then moving Kane to Haaland in GW2 as some have mooted but I never like booking in transfers so I'll have to think a lot more on that one

What bout Haaland, Salah, Kulu? If Camzys prices are bang on then they will be the same as Haaland, Son, Diaz.

I wouldn't rule it out, I think a lot of it depends on Eriksen joining or not but his presence would affect both, Eriksen would take setpieces from Son but he could also mean Kulusevski is rotated a bit more if Conte wants to play 352 with Eriksen at CAM. Some of those fixtures look really good for someone like Son though

Aye, Son/Diaz v Salah/Kulu is maybe simply a call of how many times you're likely to captain a premium Spurs/Liverpool player in the opening weeks and months and then you make your decision based on that (plus the prices, obviously).

  5. Non-template FPL is for Kin…

All I want from this season is variation. Variation in squads and variation in captaincy. We usually get that in the first half of season anyway but with more and more FPL influencers around the template becomes narrowed.

    1. @persecuted_by_mods

Last season felt especially bad for people copying influencers, I don't care that much because I aim to beat the influencers and top players but it was weird watching people who for years didn't really have a clue about fpl all suddenly making strange similar moves week by week

Neither are, I'd imagine they'll get a striker (Jesus) and stick with Ode and Saka, Martinelli and ESR would then rotate a lot

at 8, he'd need to keep penalties for me to consider him. Guess that depends on who they bring in as striker.

I'd like Jesus or Saka, but in my current draft I can't go above Martinelli and a 5m defender.

If Jesus joins I think I'll go with him. If not then I'm heavily considering Saka but only remembering from discussions here that Martinelli had the penalty last day I'm not too sure. Might cause myself pain and go for Marti again

I'm not comfortable with Marty - he gets subbed off a lot and shares gametime with ESR. Just can't find the extra sheckles after maxing out on City and Pool.

On Camzy's prices I've got this for 101m:

                  Alisson 4.0
                  TAA Robbo Cancelo Dias 4.0
Son Martinelli Eriksen (Spu) Johnson 4.5

Yeh. Camzy's got him as a mid. If he's a striker I'll have to reconsider.

Hmm actually I think I might be mistaken. In his videos he seems to be playing from the flanks. Fotmob shows him as a striker from the second half of the season though. Not sure what's the truth.

                I didn't want relative.
Just couldn't work out how a team ahead in difficulty for both Attack and Defence goes behind for Overall.
                Statistics isn't my strong suit.

When you filter to just attack or defense it looks like it's relative i.e west ham for man city is easier than palace is for arsenal

When you switch to overall it's just the fixture, i.e west ham are deemed a better team than crystal palace

So to fix the issue you're having just set the overall to relative too

Hope that makes sense, and hope I'm right and not talking outta my butt

First time I've had a decent period to look at the fixtures, early thoughts (apart from the obvious ones) are:

              - Brighton and Leeds have really appealing runs, definitely think I'll try getting an attacking def / attacker from both
              - Brentford should be a decent option to solve 4.5 def spot
              - A fair few maybes there that have mixed fixtures yet might do well in an attacking sense but are quite an unknown for now, ManUtd, West Ham, Leicester, Southampton

I've considered those. I don't really trust the ticker as it stands - Brighton's games are tougher than it suggests. I'm considering a 4.5 defender and Gelhardt from Leeds, but as benchies - their fixtures don't give me confidence at either end. Brentford without Eriksen worries me, but if there's a 4.5 defender going, why not?

Liverpool and City are so far head-and-shoulders above the rest that I'm going to blow half my budget on 6 of them. I agree with your maybes and intend to avoid starting with them, starting pretty conservatively until I can suss the lie of the land.

To be honest I'm just going with my own judgement on fixtures rather than the ticker, I rarely agree with their layouts as there are a lot of things to take into account regarding difficulty but yeah it wouldn't be first choice, it'd definitely be more of a rotational thing. Agree as well about Pool, wasn't the initial plan but think I have to look at Liverpool triple up, not overly convinced by City's fixtures though myself, if I was to triple up it wouldn't involve 2 defenders so it's hard to afford the extra mid (and decide who).

Gotta take the ticker with a pinch, but to be fair, it did throw up Brennan Johnson who wasn't on my radar.

A few players I was very cold on but like now having seen how the fixtures all fall together are Watkins Mount and Neto. Not sure City's early fixtures are as hot as some are making out, week 4 looks like a good jumping on point, esp. for unknowns like Haaland.

the answer is rarely to get no city players, it's usually to get the right ones. Haaland hopefully makes that easier.

Definitely. I'd narrow the nailed-ons down to Ederson, Cancelo, Dias, Rodri, KDB and Haaland

I will have Cancelo (would only baulk at about 9.0+ which isn't a realistic price) but I'm not entirely sure I would go beyond that. Still have in my head when D.Silva arrived and it took about 6 games until he was 'up and running'. Pep loves himself and the idea that you must be instilled in the ways before you get starts; throw in a dodgy injury record and Haaland is a wait and see (but must have the structure to jump on immediately).

A more recent example would be spending 100m on Grealish only for him to do naff all last season. I honestly think Haaland will be different gravy. Him and a promotee are the only PL newbies in my draft.

Neto is an interesting one, Wolves seemed to be missing something last season so he may help, but I'll just find it hard to trust Wolves until I see a bit from them so I'd say I'll avoid. Mount could do well with those fixtures for sure, I'll be keeping an eye on Gallagher in preseason but if he's not an option Mount may be worth trying to get to.

Neto, Podence, wingbacks - all could be bargains, but at this stage you just don't know what Wolves are going to give you.

Agree with this, Wolves are definitely a monitor during pre-season to see which version is likely to turn up. I quite like Lage and the fact that he has told Saiss and soon Marcal to sling their hooks (hated both of them) makes me think he is a savvy operator who can get them back to what they were like around xmas.

              Sanchez 4m
              Trent Cancelo R.james chilwell trippier
              Diaz Johnson son bissouma 4.5m
              Haaland Gelhardt 4.5m

What I’m looking at to start

or Martinelli & Coady for chilwell & bissouma

I wouldn't go with Bissouma from the off, and I'd be more cautious over the Chelsea defence with all the changes, but otherwise you're good. First mention I've seen of Sanchez. I started with him last season and kept him for most of the year. He'll prob be 5m this time but has good fixtures.

yeah seen a few have him at 4.5m which would be generous for the starting keeper in a mid table side.

I hear you. If bissouma is 4.5 I would just like his chances of getting assists from nothing passes to son & Kane compared to others at that cheap price point. Last name on my team sheet but if at 4.5 again I’d sign him up

I'd expect both Sanchez and Bissouma to be 5m

i think he'd be a good first bench option, but wouldn't want to be starting him regularly. That's the issue with big 5 at the back, you lose the option of 4.5m defenders, who are usually much better options that 4.5m midfielders, and certainly better than 4.5m strikers who just won't play.

I don't like it, but only because you're going to have to start 2 of Johnson, Gelhardt, Bissouma, another 4.5m mid and a 4.5m striker every week.

Yes I’d probably downgrade chilwell to a 5m option and upgrade a 4.5 mid into someone like Martinelli/Odegaard hopefully (6.5m option)

he was good in No 10 position until Partey was injured then he played CM along with Xkaha. If they buy Tielmanss CM, Odergard will play further and great

Good shout on Ode & if we get Jesus he will finally have someone who can make intelligent runs to put away the abundance of chances he creates.

77 big chances created last year only behind TAA Bruno & KDB

He was superb last year but still feels more like assist the assister type rather than the assister or scorer most of the time

A year more mature, regular gametime for 90 mins as others get subbed, playing as an attacking midfielder, feeding Jesus - I'm partial to him with those opening fixtures.
