Compete for real prizes in the free-to-play Sorare Academy this weekend

Sponsored by Sorare

After a short summer break, the free-to-play Sorare Academy returned last week with a bumper chance to win prizes.

There are 15 more opportunities to land a Sorare card this week as we again focus on all things Major League Soccer (MLS).

This time we hand over to guest writer Frip to take us through the fixtures.

Frip has been playing Fantasy MLS for over 10 years now and peaked when reaching an overall rank of 1st in the 2014 McDonald’s FIFA World Cup game. Since then he’s rekindled a love for Fantasy Football through Sorare. You can find him on Twitter posting regular MLS injuries, transfers and other news here.

A whopping 30 managers secured a prize last week as we doubled up to celebrate our return. Top of the leaderboard was manager Quovad with this team:

Five match-ups to target this weekend

MLS is back with another full set of 14 games this weekend. Starting on Friday with Cincinnati hosting Orlando, we have a packed set of fixtures that include the ‘California Clasico’ between LA Galaxy and San Jose (and a car parade through San Jose, if you’re into that).

Sorare Academy players have a myriad of choices in these fixtures, so let’s take a look at some of the best ones to target with your picks.

Charlotte FC at CF Montreal

As in other leagues, the best defensive fixtures are found in match-ups where the home team is heavily favoured. This weekend doesn’t have any obvious standouts like that in store for us, but Montreal hosting 2022 newcomers Charlotte FC might be the closest thing to it. Charlotte have yet to win away from home and Montreal pose a tough task as well.

Be careful with Djordje Mihailovic and Kamal Miller, who are both set to miss this fixture with injuries. Both of them would be great picks if healthy, but alas, it’ll just be Sebastian Breza and Joel Waterman for me here.

Sporting Kansas City at Seattle Sounders

Seattle gets to host a possibly tired Kansas City, after the latter play in the US Open Cup midweek. Seattle are undefeated in their last five, having won four of those games.

You could do worse than picking five Seattle players this weekend but keep an eye on injury news as mainstays Raul Ruidiaz and Xavier Arreaga are going to miss out. The good news is that last season’s Defender of the Year runner-up Yeimar Andrade could return to the starting XI for this one.

Nicolas Lodeiro is my captain this weekend as he has a high floor and ceiling thanks to his all-around scores and likelihood of picking up a goal or assist.

I’ll be following injury updates for Yeimar closely as this is a risky pick.

Los Angeles Galaxy at San Jose

This fixture has produced some incredible games over the years, usually with lots of goals involved. An attacker from either team here could round out your line-up in the Extra spot. I particularly like midfielder Jamiro Monteiro, who picks up solid all-around scores and could always get on the scoresheet himself. Christian Espinoza may have been a bit quiet lately but this is the type of game I would want him in my lineup for.

My Galaxy pick here would be Dejan Joveljic, who is unfortunately still a substitute despite making the difference off the bench repeatedly this season.

New York Red Bulls at LAFC

LAFC have another tough match-up at home this weekend after they held Seattle to a 1-1 draw last week. This time, however, they have the benefit of playing the Red Bulls after their midweek Open Cup game. LAFC were careful with Carlos Vela last weekend due to his lingering injury and the same thing could happen this weekend. If you’re like me and don’t want to take a risk on Vela then Christian Arango is a solid forward option for this game. Jose Cifuentes is the go-to if you need a midfielder

Defensively, LAFC have just made a splash by signing former Juventus captain Giorgio Chiellini. He’ll be eligible to play in early July and until then Mamadou Fall, Sebastien Ibeagha, Jesus David Murillo, and possibly Eddie Segura will share centre-back duties. Avoid.

Atlanta United at Toronto FC

This one is for the contrarians among you who’d like to back a red-hot team on the road. Atlanta is coming off of a 2-0 win and faces a Toronto defence that has allowed the second-most goals in the league so far. There are plenty of choices in Atlanta’s XI and you could double dip with both Luiz Araujo and Josef Martinez, or even bring in Alan Franco as well.

As far as Toronto goes, their #10 Alejandro Pozuelo is always a threat and that’s before he gets even more support from star signing Lorenzo Insigne in a couple of weeks.

FanTeam games, especially season long, very underwhelming this year. 1m pot last year and 25k this (may expand). Maybe they are actually broke but cutting the number of entries and leaning into half-season games is a misstep IMO and feels like a last throw of the dice to find a model that works.

Hmm, you may be right. Would be a shame to see them go under, I enjoy most of their football formats. Finished just outside the money slots in most of the tournament games (PL, CL etc.) but still about 400 quid up this season as won quite a few single game or match week tournaments.

            Go to your profile.
On the left click on 'alerts & notifications'
There are a series of boxes to tick: "Hidden Categories Filter these categories from your FFS Homepage"

They don't filter out these gambling articles though. I don't know exactly what they filter out as I have all of them ticked!

It filters the content of the article so you just see the headline and the author's information. A bit pointless since we can filter ourselves by clicking on the comment button to skip to the comments. I just turned the filters off because I wanted to see what this comment thread was about.

As I've said before, FFS will just use a filter (no matter how pointless/useless it is) as justification for even more gambling adds. "but you can filter them out now"

Surely United gotta sign someone soon. Worst season in the premier league followed by worst ever transfer window. ETH could be gone by Christmas

It'll be a classic Glazers window, do naff all but chase outlandish targets instead of being smart with money and signing a few players. Get relatively nowhere in negotiations after trying to haggle, panic right at the end and end up being the highest spenders of the window by overpaying for one player

Again based on live fpl pricing this team seems ok - I reckon in real fpl mayvnot be affordable but hopefully good starting point- assumes of course Henderson to Forest

    Henderson
    TAA Fofana Cancelo Chilwell
    Salah Saka Kulusveski Neto Ramsey
    Haaland

    Ward Coady Gelhardt Greenwood

Have to disagree. As his article points out, Cash is a wingback who plays 90mins each and every game - can't be many like him. Ramsey will be rotated in and out of the starting lineup.

I don't think one up front is necessarily going to fail, but I wouldn't be surprised to see a mass abandoning of that formation by GW3 when one or two forwards hit the ground running.

To me starting with two non-playing 4.5 forwards is asking for trouble in terms of it being poor bench cover, meaning the squad is inflexible and requiring 2 FTs get out of.

We do all seem to be going big at the back though. I tried a draft with 3 premium defenders and rotation 4.5s, but I've kept coming back to 4 or even 5 5.5m+ defenders.

If it works looks good but very inflexible pricing structure - almost any transfer you’ll want to make will take two transfers which I’m not a fan of ie how would you get a 7.5m fwd/ mid if one becomes necessary - getting 2 in will likely take 4 transfers!

      a) Is Perisic this season's version of last season's much hyped Shaw?
      b) Is Haaland this season's version of Lukaku/Werner/Haller etc.(FOMO)?
      c) Is Salah this season's version of Salah from previous seasons?
      d) Will Kane just be August Kane in August?
      e) Is Son so obvious that he gets overlooked?

Without knowing prices, I will aim to start with Salah and Son and just live with FOMO. If I get it wrong them either I'll have to save up 2FT and have something ITB or waste my WC like I've done each of the few seasons I've played.

        A) Without knowing his position and price, nope.
        B) He is not that bad. Probably going to perform like Kun with gametime managed. I think he will be one of those kind of picks which you have to stick with for more than 4-6 GWs for any proper returns.
        C) I think Salah's numbers will drop but will still manage to get a decent score
        D) Nope but dont expect huge returns
        E) This time, he wont be cheap. So, finally he might get overlooked due to a genuine reason.

Yeh, it's good. My latest draft is a Salah/Haaland double-up with strong defence. It does leave with absolutely naff all on your bench in a season of mega-rotation though.
Not trying to catch Arsenal's early fixtures?
        Not gonna captain Kane? 😉

Possibly re Arsenal - hopefully one of the decent mids are 6.0 and they can come in for one of Eriksen/Bruno G

That Arsenal midfield is going to be tricky. I suspect any priced 6.0 won't get that much gametime.

Did you see the recent article on Bruno G?
Essentially saying, he's never scored at the same rate he did at the tail end of last season.
I had a Bruno G/Mbeumo rotation in a draft (as their fixtures complement nicely), but having read the piece on Bruno G and in particular Howe's comments on 'we didn't bring him in to score goals', I reconsidered.

            Nice team though.
You including Eriksen based on being at Brentford, Utd or Spurs? (though I think the latter have pulled out of the race now)

Finally settled on a decent spine for my team...
9 players that are pretty much nailed with great fixtures for the first few weeks... and then 2 spots to be filled with the players in brackets

      Sanchez
      Robbo, Dias, Chillwell.... (Tomiyasu/Fofana)
      Salah, Diaz, Ramsay...... (5.0m/4.5m)
      Kane, Watkins................ (Johnson)

Tomiyasu and Fofana rotate extremely well up until the winter break
Hoping there will be a couple of decent budget midfielders that rotate well with Johnson (or another) for that final starting spot.

.. but fully expecting this template to be in the bin and unfeasible after the ACTUAL prices are announced.

Yeah, it's good. Arsenal have excellent fixtures for the first 8 GWs so you might as well plug in Tomi for them and get rid after.

Arsenal's fixtures are excellent I agree... waiting to see if anyone at a decent price catches the eye during their pre season
Hoping to find some wiggle room, either in the prices on release or by sacrificing 0.5m here and there... in order to change one of Ramsay/Watkins to Odegaard/Jesus (assuming he moves to Arsenal)... but I suspect I'm very much clutching at straws.

      What about this team?

      Sanchez
      Robertson-Cancelo-Coady-Trippier
      Salah-Kulusevski-Saka-Guimaraes
      Mitrovic-Haaland

        Here we go!

Sure this won’t be affordable either but can do it on livefpl if Pope is 5m
Raphinha is in there if he goes to Ars, Spurs or Che

        Pope
        Tierney Cucurella Cancelo VVD
        Raphinha Diaz Son Aaronson
        Haaland Jesus

        4 Fofana 4.5 4.5

Yeah it’s a good point. If Zinchenko leaves I can see him starting most weeks as he is coming in at 40m+

Can see the same problem with Chelsea & Spurs full backs as they have good back ups so rotation could be a killer.

Chilwell for example has Alonso & Emerson now

220-260k salary for Jesus seems a lot, if true. Suggests to me that there won't be another CF signed this window, leaving Nketiah the only clinical CF, and most clinical Arsenal player.

I'll be tempted in FPL to take a risk on Nketiah, with him coming on for the final 10-45 mins of games to get goals scored. (I feel the same about ESR too).

I really like the potential signings of Jesus and Raphinha, and Vieira too, but I think another quality finisher in central areas would have been my priority. Hopefully I'm wrong and a Scamacca's on the horizon, with Jesus more in rotation on the flanks. Or otherwise, Arsenal's wide players become monster goalscorers.

Interesting stat on when Jesus starts premier league games

          Starts 99
          Goals 53
          Assists 23

So that’s 76 goal involvements in 99 games. That ain’t bad & given our fixtures if he signs he’s going in my team for sure!

Eddie is going to play 2nd fiddle & get Europa games starts

Jesus has a high G/xG record. He's a very good player with an attacking role in a very good Man City team. But he should still score more to be considered a good finisher, and a lot more to be the main striker/goalscorer at a top club imo. Hopefully, he becomes a monster assister at Arsenal and gets plenty of tap-ins.

Thanks. Sure, I see him getting good expected numbers (although less p90 than at City), but he's not a specialist in converting those to actual goals. He's in the team for all his other attributes. He's good for the xG (and xGC) of the team, but the sheer number of chances created covers up the fact that he's far from a high-quality finisher/shooter. I don't think he's improved that part of his game since he joined City, unfortunately. He'll get a good amount of goals, but I don't see him matching or exceeding his xG or converting over 20% of shots, like other goalscorers do.

Last season converted only 12.5%, with only 33% shot accuracy. 2.8 goals under his expected goals. It's pretty much the same story, or worse, every season.

Just to be clear, I'm very happy with him potentially coming to Arsenal. I just don't see him as an efficient goal converter, so would prefer to see a system in which he is contributing to goals, but not relied on to finish them.

Just reading the article you shared, and it seems to cover my perspective. Would love to see him as a wide player at Arsenal. Would be interesting to see if his conversion improves when starting, but I doubt there's anything significant there.
