FPL 2022/23 prices released: Sunday round-up – James and Chilwell revealed

More Fantasy Premier League (FPL) player prices for the 2022/23 season are being released and we’re bringing you live updates as and when they drop.

Chelsea were the first club to make an announcement on Sunday morning, with Reece James and Ben Chilwell among the players priced up. West Ham United and Jarrod Bowen then took centre stage at noon, with Newcastle United, Southampton and Bournemouth following on.

CHELSEA

There has been plenty of talk in the Fantasy community over the last month over whether a cheaper Ben Chilwell could ‘cover’ the more expensive Reece James in 2022/23 but what we didn’t anticipate was that FPL would price them identically.

James and Chilwell both start the new season at £6.0m, which is on the generous side for James given his attacking threat. The right-back’s patchy fitness record and the defensive turmoil that Chelsea are facing this summer, with Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen making an exit, are contributing factors to his cost but there’ll be plenty of takers at that price.

The Blues are near the top of our Season Ticker for fixture difficulty in the first seven Gameweeks, meeting only Tottenham Hotspur of last season’s top six.

Also to be filed under ‘bargain’ is Edouard Mendy (£5.0m), who like Alisson yesterday has been priced up cheaper than virtually all of us would have predicted. Mendy has fallen one million pounds from last summer and the popularity of the set-and-forget £4.5m FPL shotstopper strategy is certainly being challenged, with Ederson surely set for a lower starting price given what was happened with the goalkeepers of Liverpool and Chelsea.

Thiago Silva (£5.5m) and Cesar Azpilicueta (£5.5m) were the other Chelsea defensive assets priced up this morning.

Further up the pitch, we have seen the expected positional reclassification of Kai Havertz (£8.0m). The German is now a forward in FPL, with just over 60% of his league appearances for Chelsea last season coming when playing through the middle up front. By our rough calculations, Havertz would have lost 18 clean sheet/goal points had he been a forward in 2021/22 but earned an estimated 10 extra bonus points to partly compensate.

Mason Mount has had a minor price rise to £8.0m following his best-ever season for FPL points. The England international racked up 22 attacking returns from just 27 starts and five substitute appearances, averaging an impressive 6.1 points per start.

Callum Hudson-Odoi (£5.5m), Jorginho (£6.0m) and Christian Pulisic (£6.0m) are the other Chelsea midfielders priced up, while Timo Werner (£8.0m) remains a forward and costs the same as Havertz.

WEST HAM UNITED

Jarrod Bowen‘s (£8.5m) reward for a barnstorming 2021/22 in which he racked up 29 attacking returns and outscored all FPL midfielders bar Son Heung-min and Mohamed Salah is a price hike of £2.0m.

In all likelihood, there’ll probably be few initial takers in the right-winger, and not just because of price: West Ham face Man City, Spurs and Chelsea in the opening six Gameweeks, along with big-spending Aston Villa and a deceptively difficult Brighton side.

Michail Antonio (£7.5m) started last season on fire but ended up something of a damp squib, scoring 40 points in the first three Gameweeks but only adding a further hundred in his next 33 run-outs. FPL have consequently decided to leave him static at £7.5m, and again there will likely be limited interest come Gameweek 1.

There are some potential future bargains in defence if new signing Nayef Aguerd (£5.0m) can help tighten up a backline that kept more shut-outs than just four other teams in 2021/22.

Aaron Cresswell (£5.0m) and Vladimir Coufal (£4.5m) have offered decent attacking threat and returns over the last two FPL seasons but that sometimes hasn’t been backed up with clean sheets at the other end. FPL have thus dropped them both half a million in price.

Aguerd is highly rated and was part of a Rennes side that had the third-best defensive record in Ligue 1 over the two seasons he was at the French club.

Ben Johnson, a bargain-bin £4.0m in 2021/22, is similarly available at £4.5m this time around.

In midfield, Declan Rice (£5.0m), Said Benrahma (£6.0m), Pablo Fornals (£5.5m), Manuel Lanzini (£5.5m) and Tomas Soucek (£5.5m) have also been priced up today.

NEWCASTLE UNITED

There are some potential FPL bargains from big spenders Newcastle United, who have been splashing the Saudi cash this summer on new recruits.

The Magpies will have designs on a top 10 finish next season, with heavy investment set to continue over the next two months.

One of their recent arrivals, Nick Pope, starts life on Tyneside at £5.0m. FPL royalty Pope will hopefully be playing under better defenders than he was at Burnley but still not quite at the top-level standard where he’ll be deprived of the save points that have helped boost his appeal over the years. Still, with Chelsea’s Mendy surprisingly listed at £5.0m and Alisson only half a million more expensive, the appeal of mid-price goalkeepers outside the top four has taken a bit of a dent.

Kieran Trippier and Matt Targett also both come in at £5.0m, meanwhile. Since making his debut in Gameweek 24 last season, the corner-taking Targett ranked fifth among defenders for chances created and second for successful crosses. But it’s Trippier who is probably the slightly bigger draw, with the England international not only on a share of indirect dead-ball duties too but a whizz at direct free-kick situations, as well.

Dan Burn (£4.5m) and Fabian Schar (£4.5m) are cheaper routes into the Magpies’ defence but one of them could make way for the as yet unpriced Sven Botman.

Newcastle are second in our Season Ticker for fixture difficulty between Gameweeks 6-15 and also entertain newly promoted Nottingham Forest on the opening weekend.

Further forward, Callum Wilson stays at £7.5m despite another injury-ravaged campaign. His record at Newcastle overall is pretty elite, with 20 goals, six assists and 204 FPL points arriving in 39 starts. String that record together over the course of one campaign (minus the 39th game!) and you’re into ‘Team of the Season’ territory, although ever-present status has been a pipe dream when it comes to Wilson.

Allan Saint-Maximin has been reclassified as a midfielder and now costs £6.5m, while influential January signing Bruno Guimaraes has moved up from £5.0m to £6.0m. Joelinton (£6.0m) is also now an FPL midfielder following his redeployment in the engine room under Eddie Howe.

Joe Willock (£5.0m) and Chris Wood (£6.0m) are kindly priced but reliable game-time may well be an issue when Howe has a fully fit squad at his disposal.

SOUTHAMPTON

There’ll be precious little initial interest in FPL assets from Southampton, with the Saints facing a tough run of fixtures in the opening five Gameweeks and finishing 2021/22 in limp fashion.

Now minus Armando Broja and with Tino Livramento potentially sidelined until 2023, there aren’t too many players from Ralph Hasenhuttl’s squad on the Fantasy watchlist.

James Ward-Prowse (£6.5m) is about the pick of a mediocre bunch, with the midfielder not just reliable for starts last season (as always) but also having his best-ever season for FPL points. The penalty-taking, free-kick-scoring, corner-delivering England international has the monopoly on set plays at Southampton and has banked 15 attacking returns in each of the last two seasons.

He finished just outside of the 10 top-scoring FPL midfielders of 2021/22 but hasn’t risen in price.

Kyle Walker-Peters (£4.5m), Jan Bednarek (£4.5m), Romain Perraud (£4.5m) and Mohammed Salisu (£4.5m), part of a defence that shipped goals for fun at the back-end of last season, are all priced the same as one another, while new signing Gavin Bazunu joins the £4.5m goalkeeper club. New centre-half Armel Bella-Kotchap is, you guessed it, also at £4.5m.

Che Adams (£6.5m), Nathan Redmond (£5.5m), Stuart Armstrong (£5.0m) and Oriol Romeu (£5.0m) were also part of today’s reveal.

BOURNEMOUTH

Bournemouth’s very own penalty-taking talisman comes in at half a million cheaper than Aleksandar Mitrovic (£6.5m).

Dominic Solanke was priced up at £6.0m by FPL on Sunday evening and is unsurprisingly the Cherries’ most expensive asset.

The former Liverpool striker played a direct part in just under 50% of the goals that Scott Parker’s scored in their promotion-winning campaign – and that’s without looking at ‘Fantasy assists’ for things like shot rebounds.

FPL have applied a broad £5.5m brush stroke across anyone else of attacking note from the Bournemouth squad, with wingers David Brooks, Jaidon Anthony and Ryan Christie and forward Kieffer Moore all available this price. So too is Philip Billing, who hit double figures for both goals and assists last season in a more advanced central midfield role than we were previously accustomed to seeing him in.

Lewis Cook, a deep-lying playmaker who posed little attacking threat in the Championship, might be overpriced even at £5.0m.

At the back, we’ve got a clean sweep of £4.5m assets.

New signing Ryan Fredericks, attack-minded left-back Jordan Zemura and centre-half Lloyd Kelly are all at this price point, along with the Championship ‘Golden Glove’ winner, Mark Travers.

                    4.5 + 4 = 8.5
                    7.5 + 7 + 6 + 5 + 4.5 = 30
                    13 + 8 + 8 + 8 + 4.5= 41.5
                    11.5 + 4.5 + 4.5 = 20.5

                    8.5 + 30 + 41.5 + 20.5 = 100.5

                    Have I done something wrong??

I think the quality of 4.5 defenders presents more options.

First 0.5 more but any mid up to 7.

I feel like with these comparisons they always use Trent who is generally the exception and will be in most teams. Would be interested to see them at the 7m and 6m comparisons as that’s the positions more likely up for debate

I realise it may seem like a waste of a Liverpool spot, but as I'm going without Salah anyway I'm tempted to have Trent, Robertson, and Tsimikas - with the latter (assuming 4m) taking the first spot on my bench.

This way, if Robertson is ever rotated at least I'll have his first-choice cover while also saving 0.5m (potentially) to spend elsewhere.

It depends, because there is a lot of value to be had elsewhere this season and TAA/Robertson is still more than some will have - plus the extra funds.

Honestly madness. Even if you don't start with Salah you don't want to be locked out so one slot has to be permanently assigned to him whether you own him or not

Alisson would be a better choice

      1. Kobayashi
        • 4 Years
        1 year, 9 months ago

I don't think it's complete 'madness' if Tsimikas does come in at 4m, or alternatively Trent's backup. I'm 100% going without Salah either way, I'm just experimenting with what the extra funds allow.

        1. Ser Davos

Okay, fair enough. Tsmikas still strikes as a terrible use of a Pool slot anyhow, but each to their own

Sure, these drafts are sometimes only for first few GWs as most will end up wildcarding by GW 4-5 anyway. Tsimikas was the template pick last season due to Robertson being a doubt, I'm mainly anticipating more rest/rotation with the new rules this year.

            1. Ser Davos
              • 8 Years

That is a more than valid point tbf. We all lunged at Tsimikas last year, but I think our thinking was a lot more short-term-early-WC

Robbo wasn't a 'doubt' - we knew he was out the first 2 GWs. I had Tsimi and bagged his points, then parked him on the bench until my early wildcard. But I'm saving my WC for after the WC. My planning is long term. If you want to plan for an early wildcard, okay but be aware Robbo currently has no injury problems or is likely to be fatigued in the early GWs.

We had no idea how long Tsimikas would be filling in for Robbo, just that he was his replacement for the interim period. Also, just because neither has any injury/fatigue problems now doesn't mean something may change between now, preseason and the first few GWs - anything can happen, including unexpected rotation.

For me, City and Liverpool are so far ahead of the competition, that the first thing I do is get 6 optimal players from those 2 teams. Currently it's TAA, VVD, Cancelo and Laporte, Salah and Haaland. Earlier, I've gone with Diaz and Foden and dropped 2 at the back, but I concluded that defensively I can only trust those 2 sides so I do want 4 nailed defenders from them. Anything suboptimal like a part-time player would be an extraordinary waste, for me.

        2. SkyByBo

It's not just Salah, what if Diaz is on fire or Nunez starts with a hatty, you are crippling the flexibility of your team for a crap second string defender who won't play.

He will play sometimes as Trent/Robbo won't play every match, that's for sure. There will be a few preseason games to see how they play (incl. Nunez/Diaz), but both at at a good price range (8-9m) where there are plenty of alternatives too.

    Lloris (5.0)
    TAA / Cancelo / Laporte / Cash / Tomi
    Salah / Saka / Diaz / Neto
    Halland

    4.0 / Undav / Elanga / 4.5

Quite liking this draft. Really want 2 x 8.0 options in mid to give the option to swap around that pool easily. Even some change for an albeit weak bench.

First draft. Value in defence seems too good to ignore, although the clear omission here is the Spurs attack. Thoughts?

    Raya
    Trent - Robbo - James - Chilwell - Cancelo
    Saka - Grealish - Fraser - Salah
    Haaland

    Subs: 4.0, 4.5, 4.5, 4.5

Chilwell to Cash/Tripper, Raya to Mendy seems more promising to me — and I'm not yet sold on Grealish or Fraser. Could work wonders though, and it's not a bad dradt, as I love me some TAA + Robbo.

Fraser is an awful pick and you have no bench, downgrade the back line a bit.

Awful is a little strong. He has FPL pedigree it’s just whether he can stay fit. Not many players in that bracket other than Kovacic and Armstrong.

I don't like 2 X 4.5 strikers, you have 1 playing bench player. There are some great defensive options at 4.5/5, use them and build a more balanced team.

A lot of us are going with 2x4.5 forwards. For me, a 5m midf is fine for the bench (I have Elanga with my 2x4.5 non-playing fwds). I'd find 0.5 to upgrade him to a 5.5 regular starter. You could go Robbo>VVD, Saka to Odegaard or something like that.

Yeah I just prefer to get my £ in the first XI tbh so I’m fine with a couple of duds on the bench. I agree on the 4.5 defender point and might well downgrade one of Chilwell/James to enable Fraser to someone like Rashford.

I reasoned Robbo will outscore Diaz, then further reasoned that with extra subs, VVD will come out on top and is 1.5m less than Diaz. So I'm good with Salah, TAA and VVD.

Alternate strategies: £5.0 defender planned transfers.

I know the suggestion of planned transfers usually goes down like a lead balloon but I'm putting out this out there anyway.
Looking at the teams that have attacking fullbacks priced at £5.0m you can plan to hop on runs of good fixtures.

    Starting with Trippier for GWs 1+2 > Tierney (or Mykolenko) for GWs 3+4 > Kristensen for GWs 5 - 7 > Trippier for GWs 8 - 10...

This gives green light fixtures of:
NOT, bha, bou (NOT), FUL (bre), EVE, bre, NOT, BOU, ful, BRE.

I'm not changing player every GW so you can still make over transfers to your squad in between.

I doubt this would be a popular strategy, but still food for thought.

My others starters are Kulusevski, Odegaard, Trippier, Neto and first bench Elanga. They're not in my long-term plans unless they are great the whole season.

I'm planning something along these lines, but with rotation over a longer term rather than so many transfers.

Trippier + Gabriel with P.Jannsen as cover.

Will usually play both in a back 4 (with two premiums) but when either of them have a bad match, Brentford have a good one so Jannsen comes in. These 3 cover well until about GW10 and then I might shift to AVL or TOT defenders instead.

... at least that was the plan until the prices started to drop and now I'm not so sure.

I expect maybe 10-15% ownership, I'd be surprised if it's more. Keep having to remind myself the FFS community is only a relatively small percentage of the overall FPL players, so some players which may seem template are probably overlooked elsewhere.

Bit concerned about not owning City players. I don't like any of the 4.5m DEF options, particularly when they are likely to be highly owned.

Trent. I see Diaz and Nunez benefitting from his crosses whereas Robbo could get a bit crowded out on the left wing.

2 years ago several were hyped for 3 strikers with Kane at 10.5

1 year ago 7.5 - 8m strikers were being stacked

I think those going with 1 striker (Haaland) will regret it. The majority of the 7.5m strikers last season were injured.

Just can’t see any 7.5 striker out scoring any 7/6m defenders

Bamford, DCL, Ings 8 all injured

        Wilson 7.5, Watkins 7.5, Nacho 7.5, Antonio 7.5

        Antonio started incredibly

which ones were you thinking about? Wilson & Antonio again? Maybe Watkins? DCL? they seem a rip-off either way

Wilson is worth 7.5m with the team that's around him

yeah Wilson is a decent pick in forward terms; I'd still want a crap load of defenders/midfielders over him though

not ruling out a stacked 451 with Trippier and Wilson

Looking to me that defence will be very template, but for other positions there will be a lot of variety. I don't know why would anyone not pick TAA and James at the moment.

James slightly more debatable as changing defence at Chelsea, currently no centre backs signed and he could play on the right of a 3 at times. Not to say he isn’t a good pick though.

prefer Chilwell over James and James could play RCB is they stay at 3 atb, which is in question slightly

James brought me a looonngg run of blanks last season. Tuchel was struggling with his defence. Waiting to see if it's sorted with the new arrivals.

But we're talking about 6m player. 6m. Not much better value among defenders.

If Maddison comes in at 8 who do you think scores more?

    Trippier & Maddison
    James & Neto

    First draft:

    Lloris / 4.0
    TAA, Cancelo, Chilly, Cash, Tomiyasu
    Salah, Diaz, Martinelli, 5.5, Elanga
    Haaland, Wilson, 4.5

Looks like something just has to give in. I am everything but happy to play 5-3-2. This team structure doesn't allow me to jump on midfield bandwagons. Having both Salah and Diaz (could be Saka) eats too much of budget, but has decent upside imo.

    1) Wilson out for 4.5
    2) Cancelo out for Laporte
    3) Both
    4) Back to drawing board, too dull team

    Solanke @ 6m

Unless there’s a point change why is anyone getting Solanke over James, Chilwell etc.

A fairer comparison is Solanke versus a 5.5 defender as that's the price gap to fodder. But yeah, even so, I agree. Plenty of 5.0 and 4.5 defenders that should outscore him as is!

Fair point but yeah even then Cash is 5.0m etc.

Presuming Maddison is 8m and Lloris is 5m, you can make a really strong 5-4-1 without Salah:

    Lloris (4.0)
    TAA, Robertson, Cancelo, James, Chilwell
    Bowen, Diaz, Saka, Maddison (4.5)
    Haaland (4.5, 4.5)

I still think I'm going with Salah but it's a legitimate debate. My current draft would have Salah, Dias, Tomiyasu, Rashford instead of Bowen, Robertson, Chilwell, Maddison.

I actually cannot believe this draft is doable, might start the season with this:

    Raya
    Robbo, Cancelo, Dias, Tomiyasu
    Salah, Kulu, Bowen, Odegaard
    Haaland, Mbeumo

    4.0, Jonny, 4.5 FWD, 4.5 MID

They are killing off the £4.5m forwards. We are just going to have to accept a dead bench (hope they scrap the bb card).
