FPL 2022/23 ‘sleeper’ picks: David Raya

The ‘Sleeper’ series returns to Fantasy Football Scout pages this summer.

In these articles, we assess the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) players who had a quieter 2021/22, be it through injury, loss of form or otherwise, who we think have the potential to make an impact in the coming season.

Here, we look at David Raya (£4.5m), who could push his way back into our thoughts as an FPL asset in 2022/23.

The screenshots and data are from our Premium Members Area – sign up today for £2.49 a month (billed annually) to get access to all of these statistics and a whole lot more.

2021/22: FPL RECORD AND STATS

FPL 2022/23 'sleeper' picks: David Raya 1
  • Starts: 24
  • Goals conceded: 27
  • Clean sheets: 8
  • Saves: 78
  • FPL points: 95 (4.0 per match)

David Raya was one of Brentford’s best players in their debut Premier League campaign, as they ended in 13th place, 11 points clear of the relegation zone.

The 26-year-old featured in 24 games for The Bees despite missing a few months due to a knee injury, conceding only 27 goals and keeping eight clean sheets, form which earnt him a maiden international call-up for Spain.

In that time, Raya also collected five bonus and 20 save points, proving himself to be a very capable shot-stopper at this level.

The Spaniard ranked 17th in his position for FPL points, but matched Aaron Ramsdale (£5.0m) and Vicente Guaita (£4.5m) on a points-per-match basis, a record that placed him joint-fourth among regular starters, only behind Alisson (£5.5m), Hugo Lloris (£5.5m) and Ederson (£5.5m):

With Raya injured last season, Brentford missed his presence greatly, with his deputy Alvaro Fernandez conceding 24 goals in 12 appearances, only registering one clean sheet.

However, following his return to action in February, it’s fair to say The Bees and Raya stepped up a level.

From Gameweek 24 onwards, in 15 starts, Raya averaged 4.1 points per match, a tally only two regular starting ‘keepers could beat (see below).

Five clean sheets were kept in that time, while the Spaniard also racked up 56 saves – only Illan Meslier (£4.5m), Nick Pope (£5.0m), Kasper Schmeichel (£5.0m) and Jordan Pickford (£4.5m) recorded more.

Raya’s passing ability, which is crucial to the way Brentford try to play out from the back, is also worth noting, with only Alisson, Ederson and Robert Sanchez (£4.5m) surpassing his BPS pass completion total of 32.

“I’ve always felt comfortable with the ball at my feet, and we work on that every week. The manager wants us to be another attacker, an extra element in bringing the ball out, creating chances and passes, short and long.” – David Raya

“The goalkeeper could wear the number ten shirt. He has sent several incredible balls, exactly what you should do when you play against us.” – Jurgen Klopp on David Raya after Brentford’s 3-3 draw with Liverpool in September

2022/23: THE PROSPECTS

Squad steps up as Robertson maintains fine form: FPL notes from Liverpool v Brentford 5

After a stellar first season in the Premier League, Brentford will look to continue improving in 2022/23.

And their end-of-season form bodes well, as they won seven of their last 11 matches, keeping four clean sheets while only conceding 12 goals.

“We will keep the foundations from this year – the defensive side of the game, fitness and set pieces. Then we’d like to add a bit more on the offensive side of the game in terms of controlling games like we did against West Ham at home. That was a very good example of how I’d like us to dominate games even more.” – Thomas Frank

“I don’t believe in all this second season stuff or the narrative around it. That said, I know we can be relegated next season, but I also know we can finish seventh. Everything’s possible between 20th and seventh. We want to add layers, build and end higher and play better football. That’s the aim, but you never know what happens to a team when they get a lot of injuries or lose momentum. But hopefully we’ll avoid that and build.” – Thomas Frank

Brentford ended the 2021/22 season ranked eighth overall for expected goals conceded (xGC, see below), but the fact the players now look comfortable in a 3-5-2 and 4-3-3 offers encouragement that they can adapt tactically to different situations and maybe improve upon that defensive record.

Notably, the Bees have a sustained good run of fixtures right through until the World Cup break.

In fact, they don’t meet one of last season’s top four until Gameweek 12, while Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool aren’t concerns until the festive period.

The big six sides they do encounter in Gameweeks 8 and 12 both have to come to the Brentford Community Stadium, too.

Now, with hopefully an injury-free season ahead of him, managers looking for value should consider Raya, who is perhaps the pick of the £4.5m ‘keepers on offer in FPL.

Say here he made his national team debut as a teenager and was the first Japanese player to do so for 27 years at the time.

He also only started playing football as a little boy because he couldn't going swimming with his sisters when he had an accident and hurt himself and was not allowed to get wet.

        That is a bit interesting.

You think Trippier can keep up with Laporte/Dias?

Suppose he will be on a lot of corners and free kicks plus Newcastles defence improved a lot

No need for Mendy and Raya. You’re not going to rotate Mendy realistically (at least probably not successfully). Opt for one and replace the other with a £4m stopper

Agreed you don’t need 2 keepers. Surely you aren’t playing Neco Williams every week? If you are going 5 at the back I think you need more premiums. Finally I think Mount and Saka are better options then Kulu

Depends what you want, really. Son likely to score high, KDB too. Are they overpriced? Maybe. Sterling at Che could be interesting. Grealish or Mahrez may do well. Maddison could be handy. Lots of love for Neto and Wissa. Bruno G at Newcastle getting mentions.

What budget/structure are you working with? The best options are Salah Son & Kev, but they might leave you short elsewhere. I've gone cold on Kulu simply because Richarlison.
Bowen is being greatly overlooked here, if Raph stays in the PL he could be a great option at 7, if CR7 moves then Bruno becomes an option. Mahrez or Foden would be on my watch list as well.
Lots of ifs but luckily we don't have to make a decision tonight.

Maybe a bit late to get much debate going but...

How do people think goal sharing will effect Haaland?

At dortmund he was the main focal point, like Kane and Son. But at city with so much attacking talent, and the fact the goals always seem to be more spread out, will this impact how many returns he gets?

Main factors for me are, will they change to make him the main man? Will his lessened goals be bolstered by assists?

    1. European Bob
      • 11 Years

      They'll be sharing the assists

The goals are so spread out because they play with no 9. If haaland is a success he should score like aguero did.

He's gonna have to adapt his style though. Stylistically he seems like a square peg in a round hole but im sure pep knows what hes doing

Yeah that's the thing, it will depend on city and Haaland changing styles a bit. But if he's the new aguero then he's going to be a great asset for fpl.

One funny possility for mass hysteria in fpl circles would be if haaland takes time to adapt while alvarez hits the ground running

City have a lot of attacking talent, but they did when Aguero was banging them in for fun as well. The guy is a natural finisher, which they haven't had for a while. I think by the time the doubters are on board the bandwagon it'll be miles down the track (possibly).

Could well be. But there's plenty examples of top strikers from other leagues (especially bundesliga) and not having the same returns. Certainly not immediately.

Aguero was one of the best PL strikers of all time. Haaland may well be, but that's not known yet.

Maybe being burned by Lukaku last year is tainting me.

Looking at top points from defenders who are £4.5M this season, Crystal Palace's Andersen & Guéhi have difficult fixtures leaving Jansson and Mings as perhaps better options.

I don't see Jansson in drafts - is this simply because people want to double-up on Brentford GK and have the option to own Toney too?

Jansson is a decent option to rotate in and out. Lots of attacking threat.

Reguilón, Sánchez, Aït-Nouri, Tomiyasu are better from that PPG perspective. I guess I'm looking for a player like Coady from last season - a £4.5M who is there when I need someone to appear from my bench, or is picked for just the favourable fixtures.

You distribution of money makes it hard for you to get replacement for 1 ft. Advantage with expensive striker like haaland is that it is easy to just swap to Kane. Same for premium mids

I have been thinking about how good Haaland is as a football player and I think he reasons interesting questions about what it means to be a good football player, if you score 30 goals in a season then it is 30 goals regardless of the beauty of the goals, Haaland is a pure lethal goal scoring machine.

Raya for me, has good underlying stats. Don't mind the 2 mid price strikers, but could be hard to get Haaland if he bangs. But with the structure of the season and WC (unlimited transfers) & WC begore GW 16 means you have an escape route.

It’s pretty obvious Foden’s going to be 1st choice imo. A lot of people are talking up Mahrez and very few of those people are going to start with him. And if they do they’ll likely fall behind quickly.

Tried it with Son for Neto and Kane down to Greenwood, but means both Andreas and Neco need to play every week. 0.5 left over so need one of WIllock, Kovacic, Bailey or someone else to become an option.

Otherwise a 4.5 def from Arsenal or Villa to play every week could make it work too.

Pretty good. I assume if he does go to Fulham then he is there as a replacement for the young lad Carvalho who just got poached by Liverpool who got plenty of attacking returns last year - so a 4.5 mid who starts every week and who plays a main attacking role is worth a punt at the very least. Will he be any good? Maybe not.
