FPL new signings: Neco Williams the go-to £4.0m defender

Nottingham Forest have agreed a £17m deal to sign Wales defender Neco Williams (£4.0m) from Liverpool.

The 21-year-old right-back/wing-back helped Fulham get promoted to the Premier League last season after joining them on loan from Anfield in January.

“Despite being only 21, Neco has established himself in the Wales starting XI. He’s played in the Premier League, the Champions League and in World Cup qualifiers in the last 12 months and he is a very talented right-back.

“We believe that he’s got an incredibly high ceiling and that he can play a huge role for us at Nottingham Forest in our return to the Premier League. We’re delighted to have him on board.” – Steve Cooper

Notably, Williams will cost only £4.0m and won’t take up too much of your budget, but is the hype justified and can he become a Fantasy Premier League (FPL) option?

We’ll attempt to answer those questions below.

The stats in this piece are taken from WhoScored, with the heatmap courtesy of SofaScore.

Williams, 21, came through the academy at Liverpool and made his first-team debut against Arsenal in the EFL Cup in October 2019.

His impressive performance led to him being included in the squad for the FIFA Club World Cup, where he picked up his first senior medal.

In the second half of 2019/20, he continued his progress, earning himself a league winner’s medal after making six appearances in the squad’s title-winning campaign.

However, he has been restricted to just 22 appearances in all competitions since, with his path to the first team blocked by England international Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m).

As a result, Williams joined Fulham on loan in January 2022 to continue his development, where he made 14 league appearances, scoring twice and assisting two goals for Marco Silva’s Championship winners.

Meanwhile, Williams has also featured in 21 matches for the Welsh national team, including three appearances at EURO 2020, and is expected to start at this winter’s World Cup in Qatar.

NECO WILLIAMS: FPL PROSPECTS FOR 2022/23

Forest head coach Steve Cooper had identified the wing-back positions in his 3-4-1-2 formation as key areas to strengthen after losing loanees Djed Spence and Max Lowe.

Now, their £17m move for Williams suggests they are unlikely to be able to buy Spence, who was a revelation for them at right wing-back while on loan from Middlesbrough last season, registering two goals and four assists in 41 Championship appearances.

Williams is Forest’s fifth permanent signing of the summer following the arrivals of forward Taiwo Awoniyi (£6.0m), defender Guilian Biancone (£4.5m), centre-back Moussa Niakhate (£4.5m) and wing-back Omar Richards.

Manchester United ‘keeper Dean Henderson (£4.5m) has also joined on a season-long loan.

As a result, we could see a new-look defensive set-up that looks something like the one detailed below.

There is also potential for Williams to feature as a left wing-back in a three, a role he has sometimes performed with Wales, something which only boosts his minutes expectations.

Williams produced some encouraging attacking numbers during his time at Fulham, scoring two goals and creating two assists in just 14 starts, averaging 1.4 shots and 1.1 key passes per match.

And it’s that attacking mindset that is appealing, something he often discussed during his time at Liverpool (see below). In fact, Williams rose through the ranks as a right-winger, before he was eventually moved back to a deeper role.

“Every time I play the main focus for me, when we’ve got the ball, is getting assists. The way full-backs have developed in the last few years, especially at Liverpool, it is all about trying to get as many assists as we can. You see it with Trent [Alexander-Arnold], with Robbo [Andy Robertson] and with Kostas [Tsimikas] and myself – we are all trying to help the team score to win games.” – Neco Williams

At the other end of the pitch, Cooper made a real improvement defensively after his appointment last season. Just 28 goals were conceded in his 38 matches in charge, with summer signings Henderson, Niakhate, Biancone and Richards further bolstering the backline.

The real appeal, however, is his bargain price tag of just £4.0m.

So, FPL managers on the lookout for a cheap ‘enabler’ may just have found their man, which will be especially interesting for those wishing to include three premiums in their opening squads.

Forest also have a decent run of fixtures, with their schedule from Gameweek 6-12 particularly appealing.

Some caution is of course required with so many new faces in Forest’s starting XI, with the versatile Biancone also able to play at right wing-back if needed.

But at £4.0m we can’t be too fussy, and it does feel like Williams is the ideal fifth defender at this point in the summer, providing you aren’t going ‘big at the back’.

Like the look of him, very good stats last season, was hoping he was going to come in at 6.0 but what can you do.

I think he'll play on the right with Harrison on the left, essentially Raphinha's replacement.

Thanks Tom, as a Forest fan, I definitely think this is the best signing of our transfer window. We desperately needed a strong right back after Djed Spence. And in FPL terms, I think he's no bench fodder. This guy can play.

    Forest fan here.

Will likely play extremely advanced on the wings with plenty of chances for assists. Improvements in our back line fine some confidence of clean sheets too.

No brainer. In from the start and every chance sees out the full season for my team.

Not specifically. Johnson definitely plays up top now rather than out wide so the combination between the two will be Williams cutting it back into the box more than anything I think.

Richards on the left hand side will be more dynamic, he's much more like Spence.

Nailed Perisic would be in the essential category imho. Close or even more important than TAA. Too bad we don't know how many minutes he is going to play. Starting to think though, that even with limited minutes he may be worth 5.5m. Any early thoughts on his nailedness?

Conte likes Sessegnon so i can see a lot of rotation. Perisic will almost certainly play the Champs league games.

Nailed Perisic would surpass Trent imo, as the goals would be worth too much. I think at 5.5 he's worth punting on from the start he might get a couple of games before the subbing begins but long term I can't see why now older in a tougher league Conte suddenly starts giving him regular 90s

Yeah, I'm asking because I don't qutie know what his situation was at Inter, maybe he had some tough competition and that's why he was subbed off so often? Or maybe it was because it was too physically demanding for him to play 90 minutes regularly? Or maybe tactical reasons? Would be nice if someone could shed more light on that.

As Inter fan for life, I can tell you he was never something special. He has same movement for years, trying with some clown bicycle trick to enter the box, his right foot is useless, many of his crosses finished out of stadium. That's why he didn't play more than 60 minutes during Conte's time at Inter. I would rather go for Doherty if he finds his form before injury.

Yes but in fpl we don't need good performances, we just need goals and assists

The shape is the issue, but you already know that.

Very good in my book - with one caveat. I'd be fine with Kane and 2x4.5 forwards as Kane plays every game. But we don't know if Haaland will be rested some games. It's a big risk having no backup.

Anyone noticed how hard is to fill 3 CF spaces for last 2 or 3 seasons. Forwards are most overpriced in this game. Last season, at least, we had Dennis(5.5)...This season I can't find two playing forwards to pair them with Jesus or Haaland.

Broja might become an option if he moves but yeah that's about it unless the King of previous 5.5s Bamford, gets injured and Gelhardt steps up to inherit the crown.

Is really 5-3-2 not good compare to 4-4-2?

Some people always talk about balance but I like my 5 defenders even without Trent.

Cancelo, James, Matip, Perisic and Gabriel.

Value at the back. Any of you start with 5-3-2 ? Tq

5-3-2 is very popular - maybe the most popular formation at this time.

Someone will correct me if I'm wrong but the value has been in the back for a couple of seasons now, the issue with 5 at the back normally was to extract the value you'd have to keep them all season but for active managers who see a benrahma on fire early doors, it's very tempting to downgrade a def and upgrade a mid. If your big at the back concedes a few goals in the first few weeks can you hold your nerve

Can you hold your nerve all season with 5atb? This probably applies less these days as the wingbacks are even more value and explosives than ever before but as always it's about not knee jerking away from it

That's true, but I also think there was a mindset stuck on 3-4-3 that couldn't be shifted by evidence. I get the feeling that that has mostly broken down this time, as the strength of defenders and weakness of strikers last year was just too extreme to ignore.

Agreed, semi dissapointed in the striker pricing, for every Jesus and Haaland being priced right I feel like a DCL or a Bamford are currently non options bar a short stretch of good fixtures or a double

2 main issues with it for me:
                          - 4.5m or even 4.0m defenders make a great 1st sub compared to mids/fwds
                          - What does your midfield look like? With seemingly limited value options in sub 8m mids to start, and so many great 8m options, I don't really like the squeezed middle 532s with something like Salah / Martinelli / Neto

Awkward.... Nah, I'm sure you have good reasons for it, and your backline will probably outscore mine. Nothing against the personnel either - I'm very hot on Martinelli. But I'm trying to keep at least 2x 8m mid spots in my team - probably Diaz & Mount (who may become Maddison)

No worries. I'm conscious that it breaks all the rules of price structure. Nothing between 13.0 and 6.0 in midfield. But I like it!

Its Salah Saka and Kulu but thanks I got what you said.

Thats right, Neco can be a better sub than Colback . He is cheaper and play as fullback compare to Colback as CDM.

Another issue like Mynameisq said about how we can transfer money from the back to mids.

Interesting. Only TAA and Salah in both (no surprise about those 2 but maybe that they're the only ones).

                          Thoughts?

                          Raya (4.0)
                          TAA Cancelo Laporte James Williams
                          Son Diaz Saka (Andreas Colback)
                          Haaland Jesus (4.5)

Dunno why, but i think that Saka + Jesus is a little bit too much (mby Martineli insted if you want two Arsenal players, so you can use extra 2M)

Who do we think scores more points:
                          A. Neto+ Mendy
                          B. Chilwell+ Raya

                          Morning

I think the early fixtures are prime to gamble abit while maintaining a core template and many teams will see a tactical shift and alot of value is already present if people tweak slightly the template, the 10mil bracket is also being overlooked*

                          My current thoughts
                          1. I dont see Salah worth the value until week 4 as captain and expect Liverpool to tweak the front 3 - Jota maybe a nice differential for first few weeks but Fulham CRY mun are not great fixtures for captain.
2 I expect Spurs and Kane to be essential for large parts and plan to rotate with Haaland for captain
3 Haaland can wait until week 2 and dont feel he is necessary until week 5 again
4 *If Ronaldo leaves Bruno will be excellent value (150 points last year when United were terrible is an excellent lower end value)
5 Sterling is also excellent value, main man and chelsea have some nice Sterling type fixtures away from home early doors
6 The template has holes as usual that can be exploited - Arsenal fixtures are actually pretty tough to start in my view, Neto , martinelli are poor picks for me
7 I see value in rotating 3 players based on fixtures for early weeks which are underpriced and key men for their teams : Billing (possible out of position of the front man ) , Mitrovic and Trippier.
8 The Kane / Haaland fixture shift are really nice for captain targeting and possible maximising transfers the first 6 weeks. But you need a set squad to do so:
                          Avoiding this : west ham/ chel/ new / CRY / west ham/ villa
                          For this : SOT / NFO/ WOL/ nfo/NFO/FUL
9 Mitrovic and Billing will provide excellent value, fixtures in rotation are very fine - its just not needing to start each week that has put people off. Rotating for the first few weeks and then book come into excellent fixtures.
                          10. Billing is being massively overlooked - playing off the striker in a tactical change since January with 20 returns is worth a 5.5mil gamble.
11 Currently on Laporte over Cancelo based on some predictions for city new system where Cancelo will not be as attacking this year as an inverted midfielder in attack.

                          Im currently here :

                          Ederson
                          TAA Laporte Perisic Trippier James
                          Sterling Bruno* Diaz Billing 4.5
                          Kane (c), (Mitro) 4.5

Kane goes to Haaland week 2 if city look fluid in attack with the new system , and may even shift Haaland again for Kane in week 3 until 5.
2 of Billing Trippier and Mitrovic have very nice fixtures for the first 6-8 weeks.

Agree with all your points apart from the new Billing info. Please link your youtube channel.

Currently on Chilwell and James due to that new system although it is based on them acquiring Cucurello and is an option due to his impending arrival, not necessarily the way forward.

With regards to Man U if we are predicting some semblance of a revival I'd be tempted gamble on Martial at 7m rather than Fernandes and upgrade elsewhere.

The Billing tactical switch i heard on a Planet FPL podcast with a Bournemouth fan who said he changed position in January and then was at times even as a number 9 and running beyond Solanke - 20 returns speaks to this.

Agree with Sterling and Bruno (without Ron) options. Dubious about Trippier for the long run (not trying to jinx my own team, but I think we've taken on a sicknote there). Newcastle will collect cleanies though, so a £4.5m without a transfer to worry about seems a decent early shout.

The issue with billing is that he’s rubbish. When he was last in the prem he was genuinely one of the worst players I have seen at that level. Championship is a completely different level.

To be fair he was a cdm then.

                              5,5mil is a low gamble

I dont see Wolves scoring much at all and then their fixtures turn, - yet people are all in on Neto

While Billing in the above is only being used for 1 week in first 4 gw, then his fixtures turn very nice.

The question is will Neco Williams present better value than any of the premium defenders. He would have to score over 100 points to match the likes of Laporte.

Surely his value is as an enabler who simply sits on the bench?

That's the thing - his first haul will be observed by owners who've parked him on their bench!

Think it’s the classic example of people getting excited about a fringe player from a top club joining a lower team and expecting that they do well.

Forest will struggle to keep clean sheets and score, don’t see the attraction other than a playing 4.0. But there are genuinely good options at 4.5.
