FPL pre-season: Jesus over 50% owned after debut brace

We’ll be bringing you Scout Notes on every single friendly involving a Premier League club this summer as we gear up for Gameweek 1.

These articles get more detailed – and more useful – the closer we get to the start of the 2022/23 season as preferred formations, favoured personnel, injury concerns and form assets become apparent.

We’re also keeping tabs on the minutes played in each of these warm-up fixtures, with Premium Members of Fantasy Football Scout able to access this information at the bottom of this article.

It’s important to stress that, at this time of the summer, plenty of academy products get ample game-time. This is true again this year, as players involved in international duty in June were given a belated break and most of them haven’t been featuring in the very early pre-season friendlies.

Thursday and Friday’s reports are listed below, with the weekend write-ups to come later today.

NURNBERG 3-5 ARSENAL

  • Goals: Jesus x2, Elneny, own-goals x2
  • Assists: Nketiah x3, Martinelli x2

The FPL ownership figure of Gabriel Jesus (£8.0m) rocketed up past 50% after the Brazilian scored twice on his Arsenal debut on Friday.

The striker is now selected by 53.4% of Fantasy managers at this very early stage, an increase of over 7% on what it was before he made his Gunners bow. He remains by some distance the second-most-owned forward in the game, behind only Erling Haaland on 64.6%.

Jesus required less than two minutes to make a mark, cutting in off the right and exchanging passes with Eddie Nketiah (£7.0m) before finishing well.

The Brazil international went on to prod in his second and Arsenal’s fifth strike, having earlier effectively forced two own-goals when closing in on a cross from Gabriel Martinelli (£6.0m) and when pouncing on a rebound from a Nketiah shot that hit the woodwork.

It was interesting that Mikel Arteta opted to pair both Nketiah and Jesus up front, having started the game in last season’s preferred formation, 4-2-3-1. But the introduction of the summer signing from Manchester City prompted Arteta into a system switch, with the two FPL forwards forming a strike partnership in a 3-5-2 – a system that also saw Martinelli used as a left wing-back:

Above: Arsenal’s formation after kick-off in the second half

It’s a formation that we might not see every league fixture but one that gives Arteta options depending on the opposition/match situation.

“I’m so, so proud. I’m proud to be here at this big club. I’ve completed four or five days together with the lads, and I just want to say thank you to everyone at Arsenal because they make me feel at home. Everyone is talking, coming to me and saying ‘good luck, we are happy to have you here’, and I’m happy to be here as well. That makes me feel at home.” – Gabriel Jesus

“That’s why we brought him here, to put the ball in the back of the net and obviously for his confidence and for him to believe in what we are doing I think it’s really important and he’s settled really well.” – Mikel Arteta on Gabriel Jesus

Arsenal’s end-of-season clean sheet drought spilled over into pre-season as they frequently wobbled and conceded three goals, although there was good news from Arteta after the match when it was revealed that Kieran Tierney‘s (£5.0m) 30th-minute substitution was pre-planned and not enforced due to injury.

Arsenal XI: Turner (Okonkwo 68′); Bellerin (Martinelli 46′), P. Mari, Walters (Gabriel 46′), Tierney (Cedric 30′); Sambi Lokonga (Patino 68′), Maitland-Niles (M’Hand 68′), Smith-Rowe (Elneny 46′); Pepe (Jesus 46′), Nketiah (Marquinhos 68′), Nelson (Balogun 68′)

LEEDS UNITED 4-0 BLACKPOOL

  • Goals: Koch, Firpo, Rodrigo, Joseph
  • Assists: Firpo, Harrison, Gelhardt, Shackleton

Jesse Marsch sent his troops out in a familiar 4-2-3-1 for Leeds’ thumping of Blackpool, with budget forward Sam Greenwood (£4.5m) in the ‘no. 10’ role behind lone forward Joe Gelhardt (£5.5m).

Jack Harrison (£6.0m), scorer of eight goals in each of the last two Premier League seasons, was noticeably involved at set-play situations, ‘assisting the assister’ for Robin Koch‘s (£4.5m) opener with a quickly taken free-kick and then providing the corner that Junior Firpo (£4.5m) nodded in shortly after.

“We’ve worked a lot and talked a lot about set pieces and I’m happy to see the group excited about these moments as well.” – Jesse Marsch

Whether Marsch plans to accommodate both Harrison and new signing Luis Finisterra (£6.5m), who played exclusively on the left flank last season, in his line-up going forward is something to monitor over the next few weeks.

Gelhardt, denied a goal himself by the assistant referee’s flag, then teed up Rodrigo (£6.0m) – who was playing in an unfamiliar right-wing role – for the Whites’ third before Marsch gave youth a chance in the second half.

Leeds United XI: Meslier (Klaesson 45’), Drameh (Shackleton 61), Koch (Mullen 45’), Struijk (Moore 61’), Firpo (Davies 45’), Roca (Bate 61’), Gray (Allen 72’), Rodrigo (Miller 45’), Greenwood (McGurk 61’), Harrison (Forshaw 61’), Gelhardt (Joseph 61’).

NOTTINGHAM FOREST 1-3 COVENTRY CITY

  • Goal: Biancone
  • Assist: None

Only the first half of Nottingham Forest’s 3-1 defeat to Coventry on Friday would have been of any interest to FPL managers, with boss Steve Cooper handing game-time to reserves and academy products after the interval.

Forest were in their now-customary 3-4-1-2 shape in the opening 45 minutes, with four summer signings making their debuts: Dean Henderson (£4.5m), Giulian Biancone (£4.5m), Moussa Niakhate (£4.5m) and Taiwo Awoniyi (£6.0m).

The versatile Biancone was deployed at right wing-back and is likely a placeholder for the incoming Neco Williams (£4.0m), who FPL managers will be keeping tabs on given his price and starting status.

The sound of Cooper urging Biancone to push up “higher” would have been of encouragement to prospective Williams owners, too, and indeed it was the French defender who grabbed Forest’s only goal of the game when he swept home a loose ball in the Coventry box.

With Forest adopting a higher line, all three of Coventry’s goals came from balls hoofed over the top – albeit two of them were conceded by the second string after the break.

Henderson won’t have been happy with his part in the Sky Blues’ equaliser just before half-time, with the loanee slow to get down to a Matt Godden shot.

Forest first half XI: Henderson; Worrall, Cook, Niakhaté; Biancone, Yates, Colback, Ioannou; Lolley (Hammond 37′); Taylor, Awoniyi

Forest second half XI: Smith; Back, Mbe Soh, Panzo, Donnelly; Cafu, Ojeda; Xande Silva, Hammond, Mighten; Nuno da Costa

SERVETTE 0-2 WEST HAM UNITED

  • Goal: Alese, Mubama
  • Assist: None

Two youngsters were on the scoresheet as West Ham opened their pre-season with a win.

Centre-half Aji Alese and young striker Divin Mubama were on target, tapping in from close range after unwitting opposition touches from a Manuel Lanzini (£5.5m) free-kick and a Said Benrahma (£6.0m) shot presented them with open goals.

Benrahma of course was a popular Gameweek 1 punt this time last year after an excellent pre-season but this was more Hyde than Jekyll from the hot-and-cold Algerian, whose first touch and finishing let him down on Friday.

The Hammers were lucky to bank their clean sheet, with Servette hitting the woodwork three times and missing more chances aside, although the visiting defences in either half contained only one likely first-choice starter.

West Ham United XI: Fabiański (Trott 46′), Ashby, Dawson (Diop 46′), Alese, Cresswell (Zouma 46′), Coventry, Lanzini (Ekwah 46′), Fornals (Chesters 60′), Benrahma (Okoflex 60′), Masuaku (Longelo 46′), Antonio (Mubama 46′)

With Salah being undroppable, how much rotation are we expecting for the other spots in Liverpool's front 3?

Firmino: Jota's good season and the signing of Nunez will limit his minutes - unable to play out wide. Maybe first choice No. 9 until Nunez is up to speed

Jota: Versitile, but was only given consistent stars when Firmino got injured last year. Above Firmino in the pecking order?

Nunez: Big money signing, but will he be eased into a starting role? Is he able to play out wide as well as center?

Diaz: Should make the LW spot his own, however will likely still see some rotation. Brilliant footballer, his FPL season will depend on if he's getting on the end of attacks or just exploiting the wing for the benefit of other Liv assets.

    Thoughts?

With Trent + Salah being the stock/template picks that leaves a third spot

Cancelo currently occupies the Robertson spot, as does James and Chilwell who occupy the VVD spot.

That leaves a set and forget bargain at 5.5m in Alisson. Yes, the PPG on someone like Robertson is far higher, but at the end of the season they score roughly the same. With Tsimikas lurking and the price drop, I think Alisson is perfect as the third Pool spot

The final option is Diaz. Now a lot love the bloke and are hyping him up as a Mane lite. Not buying it myself so in the mean time till the WC, a set and forget in the form of Alisson seems the sensible play

Nunez I imagine will be given the European games in the same way Klopp bloodied Konate. Firmino is behind Jota now I think that's clear from last season. There has been talk of Klopp potentially fielding four attackers in some games https://www.liverpool.com/liverpool-fc-news/features/jurgen-klopp-liverpool-joe-gomez-24435878

Sorry, I may have gone off at a slight tangent on a re-read

My guess is that Jota will start up top with Diaz left. Firmino will get some minutes as he's a class footballer and never been one for pace

Nunez to be edged in, but can see him becoming an option actually (when the dust settles)

      Jota is a non-option as a 9m FWD

Should be starter for Fulham. Might get a couple of assists for Mitro over the season, but expect a steady stream of 2-pointers. In FPL terms, bench material only, in my book.

I could probably downgrade Wilson to 4.5, then bring in an upgrade on Bruno or Martinelli, i.e. someone like Saka / Kulu (around 8M). Think I could then have TAA instead of Robbo... maybe that's a better set up

Botman and Neco rotate nicely. I think all 3 of the 4.5 defs can make a mockery of their price

Fair enough, true. Think at least one/two rotating 4.5m DEFs will be better than going big at the back this season.

Bailey has a long way to go before first choice I'd say. Beundia will be well ahead of him in the pecking order and I'd be amazed if we didnt sign another wide attacker before season starts (assuming we can offload Traore/Ghazi)

I have an extra def (Tomiyasu) to play alongside Rice, I'd rarely use the other 4 5/5m mid apart from when I had to due to rotation. But yeah I know it's not sensible but the temptation is certainly there

Tomi I dont mind as a regular starter. Rice... I think you have to be really confident that the funds moved elsewhere make up for his mostly 2pt-ers. Maybe you can get away with it short-term but I probably wouldn't go for that myself

Jesus has all the signs of a good longterm pick who is a poor short term pick

His first 3 fixtures are over hyped. Kane and Haaland are both very nice for first 3

Yah Palace away first game of the season is going to be tough and feisty. I worry about Arsenal when it comes to those games a little.

Kane ALWAYS starts slowly, he's known for it.

Haaland is a guess, although I suspect he'll be good he's new to the team and the league.

Jesus has just as good a chance as starting well as either of them for less money in my opinion

Read up post says of Jesus "His first 3 fixtures are over hyped. Kane and Haaland are both very nice for first 3"

I'm saying maybe for defenders but I still think Arsenal will score in them so they are OK for Jesus (just likely so will the opposition in the first couple) ..........

Or were you replying to original post not me as you seem to be agreeing?

Sorry, I was asking about the OP. Yeah, I'm on your side!
There's no question Kane and Haaland have better fixtures and will outscore Jesus over the first 3 (imo), but the 3.5m difference is vast. I did have both premiums but a poster pointed out Jesus and Diaz are the same money as Kane and a 4.5 mid. The first pair surely outscore the second.

I expect Leicester with Fofana , Evans, Justin back and Ndidi in midfield again to be as expected a couple of levels above last years 2nd choice defence.

Not an easy game for Arsenal

I've gone double City and Liverpool at the back. Trying a bit of Moneyball tactics this year, would have worked last year.

      Mendy
      TAA / VVD / Cancelo / Laporte
      Salah / Son / JWP / Formals
      Jesus / Johnson

      4.0 / Neco W / Andreas / Greenwood

Not convinced by Fournals or Johnson but will look to swap them out for any over performing wildcards as we go (like we get every year).

That is isn't half bad. I mean a little flat chested in the middle obviously but not seen a big at the back and top before. There are quite a lot of options at those price points in midfield so you can always change it a little based on pre season friendlies etc...

Not really. Gelhardt will get the minutes when Bamford comes off. Greenwood won't be anything special. I'm on Archer although Forss interests me - Brentford play 2 up top (Toney and Mbuemo) and Forss is their only other listed forward.

When the game launched, I looked at going with Trent + Cancelo + Salah + Son + Haaland and decided it wasn't feasible, and therefore that one of the big three would have to go.

But now I'm wondering whether maybe Cancelo is the one to drop from those 5 to enable threemium? The rest of the team looks strong, with room for Jesus and Diaz, and with perfectly good defensive options at 4.5 such as Castagne, Jonny, Tomiyasu etc.

          Thoughts?

I disagree, 180+ points guaranteed for £7m outlay, you can't hit that points per pound ratio anywhere else.

If he was midfielder pulling in those points for £7m we'd all have him if we were being honest

Comparing points per pound absolutely does make sense. Especially when you have a variation in formations to pick from.

Imagine every defender cost 4.0 more, and you were given a budget of 120.0

The game would be literally identical, but suddenly Cancelo would represent supposedly 'poor value'.

Of course you can compare prices between positions as you say while keeping an eye on the difference above the baseline of the cheaper players in each position and keeping an eye on formations.

But points per pound by itself is not something I find to be very useful to use across positions

I'm sorry but I still disagree. If you'd have picked your team last year based on best points per.pound, and gone with whatever formation that gave you, you would have done very very well. I see no reason for it to be different this year.

I didn't last year, despite thinking it would work, to give me something more balanced..... Big mistake

Cucurella joining as expected might dent his appeal. Yes, I know he can move over to the right and also midfield but his greater share of the Man City minutes was mainly down to the lack of alternatives - Now there are alternatives. Don't get me wrong, he'll still be decent - but I'm not putting another 200 point season in the bank just yet.

I agree. The 2.5m saving by taking Jonny over Cancelo can do wonders to the team. There may only be 30 points in it by the end of the season

I'm not sure I agree with that. It was an 80+ gap last year between Cancelo and the average £4.5m defender. I can see it being similar this year. Certainly not down at 30 ish

Could work, but Trent & Cancelo are much better value & you can save a lot more going Salah - 8m mid than Cancelo - 5m def. Also whoever you don't captain out of the threemium is hurting you value-wise and probably EO-wise, e.g. an uncaptained Salah v FUL is probably dragging your rank down if you captain Son v SOU, or vice versa

I do strongly believe that in the long run, a strong defence and just the two premiums will turn out to be optimal, and I expect my first WC will end up in this direction if I don't start this way.

However, at the start of the season when lacking information about which premiums will be the ones to start on fire, I feel less at risk of missing out on big hauls over the first few weeks with Son/Haaland than I do with Cancelo.

Hello folks. Thoughts on this lot?

          Mendy
          Trippier, Digne, Gabriel
          Salah, Diaz, Martinelli, Bailey
          Kane, Haaland, Jesus

          4m, Castagne, Andreas, Williams

            Martinelli playing LWB concerned me.

That defence is like an intentional attempt to dodge points

Cancelo, Trent and Robertson pretty much guarantee 200 points for 7-7.5m. James and chilwell will score more points than any comparatively priced mid or fwd. having none of them is crazy in my opinion.

It is missing TAA / Robbo but those 3 will score well and the saving enables other big hitters

            Similar-ish to mine

            Meslier

            Robbo - Jonny - Tomiyasu - Trippier

            Salah - Son - Diaz - Bailey

            Haaland - Jesus

            (Ward - Neco - Pereira - Archer)

Not seen this before: 5-2-3- with NO Salah:
          Ederson
          TAA-Cancelo-Chilwell-Perisic-Gabriel
          Saka-Diaz
          Haaland-Vardy-Jesus
          4.0-5.5 (Neto)-4.5-4.5

Alternative is Saka/Vardy out for Salah + 4.5 Forward

If you are going 5atb then you need to pump another £1-2m into that defence.

Who do you captain gw1 where most have Salah and those that don't seem to have Kane/Son would be my worry.
