FPL

The best budget FPL goalkeepers for 2022/23

We pick out the best £4.0m and £4.5m Fantasy Premier League (FPL) goalkeepers as we begin our trawl through the price list.

Can anyone emulate the heroics of Emi Martinez in 2020/21? Can Dean Henderson recapture the FPL form of 2019/20 after a move to Nottingham Forest? And who are the bench fodder back-ups in the £4.0m bracket?

With unlimited transfers allowed during the World Cup downtime, we needn’t look further than Gameweek 16. And, of course, we also have a Wildcard to use before then, so we’re focusing mostly on Gameweeks 1-8 here as an international break – a popular window for chip deployment – precedes Gameweek 9.

Opta stats on the players featured in these articles are available in our Premium Members Area, where you can now get a full year’s subscription for just £2.49 a month.

FPL 2022/23: Can Dias or Laporte cover Cancelo?

DAVID RAYA

David Raya (£4.5m) is many FPL managers’ budget goalkeeper of choice. He’s currently the third-most-selected goalkeeper in the game, sitting in 14.4% of embryonic squads.

Raya boasted the joint-fourth-best points-per-match average (4.0) among first-choice shotstoppers last season, with a mid-season injury restricting his game-time.

Brentford don’t meet one of last season’s top four until Gameweek 12, while Manchester City, Spurs and Liverpool aren’t encountered until Gameweek 16 onwards. All five fixtures from Gameweeks 3-7 are against clubs who finished in the bottom half of the Premier League or came up from the Championship last season.

So even if you’re playing a Wildcard beyond Gameweek 9, a representative of the Bees backline still has decent fixtures on their side.

As for the all-important underlying stats, Brentford were comfortably and reassuringly mid-table for everything from clean sheets (nine, enough to rank them 10th v other Premier League sides) to expected goals conceded (xGC, 55.14/8th).

Goalkeeper% of shots saved that came from outside the area
Raya Martin43.7%
Pickford40.7%
Guaita39.3%
McCarthy (Alex)38.6%
Meslier35.6%
Sanchez33.1%
Dubravka23.1%
Forster20.7%

Save points are also a boon for an FPL goalkeeper and ideally we want our ‘keepers to be making lots of ‘easy’ stops, rather than performing unsustainable heroics from point-blank efforts. Of the £4.5m-and-under goalkeepers who got 10 or more starts in the Premier League last season, Raya boasted the highest percentage of saved shots from distance.

There are two possible downsides, one of which is the imminent arrival of Thomas Strakosha. The consensus seems to be that Raya will remain number one for now but with doubts remaining over the Spaniard’s long-term future amid a contractual stand-off, Strakosha may be being groomed as his eventual replacement.

The other caveat is the springtime change to a 4-3-3 system, a more attacking formation that Thomas Frank turned to in winnable-on-paper games. There hasn’t been a significant deterioration in defensive numbers so far, at least, with clean sheets being kept in three of their nine fixtures in this system.

ROBERT SANCHEZ

There was a sense that Robert Sanchez (£4.5m) underwhelmed in 2021/22 and yet, of the goalkeepers priced up at £4.5m or less this season, no-one scored more FPL points.

That achievement is slightly tainted when looking at his points-per-match average (3.4), which was inferior to those of Raya and others.

Brighton boasted an even better xGC than Brentford last season (the sixth-best in the division) and only five clubs conceded fewer goals. They were also joint-seventh for clean sheets.

Where Sanchez fell down was a relative shortage of save points, which were kept in just 17 of his 37 appearances. In fact, on only three occasions did the Spain international supplement a clean sheet with a save point, meaning that he frequently missed out on those big hauls that Jose Sa (£5.0m) bagged.

Fixtures-wise, Brighton are definitely a team to jump off after Gameweek 8 as matches against Liverpool, Chelsea, Spurs and Man City follow after the September international break.

That does mean that, up until that point, the Seagulls face no team who finished higher than sixth last season. Newly promoted Fulham and Bournemouth are among their opponents during that initial run.

ILLAN MESLIER

The best budget FPL goalkeepers for 2022/23

Saves have never been a problem for Illan Meslier (£4.5m), who made more stops than any other Premier League goalkeeper in 2021/22.

Clean sheets were a major issue, however, with only relegated Watford recording fewer shut-outs than Leeds (five) last season.

Meslier did wed save points with clean sheets to great effect in 2020/21, finishing as the third highest-scoring goalkeeper in FPL on 154 points.

It’s a very small sample size but Jesse Marsch began to move Leeds in the right direction upon his appointment, with defensive numbers generally improving:

Above: Leeds’ defensive numbers in 2021/22 before (left) and after (right) Marsch’s appointment

The acquisition of the tough-tackling Tyler Adams (£5.0m) is also hopefully a positive, as the Whites were short a real defensive-minded ‘number six’ last season.

The real draw is the fixture list, with Leeds top of our Season Ticker for ease of fixture from Gameweeks 1-10. Eight of those matches are against sides who finished ninth or below in the Premier League last season or came up from the Championship.

There will be detractors, and with good cause: in Opta’s eyes, Meslier was the worst Premier League goalkeeper last season for conceding more goals than was expected (actual goals conceded: 79, xGC: 62.2). Meslier still managed to post 154 FPL points in 2020/21 despite a negative ‘expected goals prevented (xGP)’ figure, at least (a more modest -4.00 compared to last year’s -16.8), so xGP isn’t the be-all and end-all.

THE OTHER £4.5M GOALKEEPERS: THE PROS AND CONS

The three newly-promoted clubs and Crystal Palace all have fairly awful starts in terms of fixtures, so with many of us FPL managers looking at attacking smaller chunks of matches, we can perhaps afford to overlook these sides for now and revisit them come Wildcard time.

Dean Henderson (£4.5m) has FPL pedigree after a barnstorming 2019/20 with Sheffield United and it could be a match made in heaven with Nottingham Forest, who conceded only 28 goals in Steve Cooper’s 38 Championship fixtures in charge. Their fixtures improve from Gameweek 6 onwards.

Palace probably aren’t worth looking at until Gameweek 10, which will give us time to assess which of Sam Johnstone (£4.5m) or Vicente Guaita (£4.5m) is Patrick Vieira’s preferred option. Only five clubs kept more clean sheets than the Eagles (12) in 2021/22, while it was just the top four who posted fewer expected goals conceded (xGC).

With Southampton similarly a no-go thanks to poor early fixtures and disastrous defensive form at the back-end of 2021/22, Everton’s Jordan Pickford (£4.5m) is the last starting goalkeeper of note in the budget pool.

The Toffees have a pesky opening run in which they meet six of last season’s top seven from Gameweeks 1-11, so they don’t really get a chance at a sustained block of good fixtures until the autumn. There are question marks over their defence in any case, with Everton among the worst clubs for xGC, big chances conceded and shots allowed even after Frank Lampard took over.

ASSESSING THE £4.0M GOALKEEPERS

There are 22 goalkeepers priced at £4.0m but not one of them, unsurprisingly, would be a Gameweek 1 starter without an injury or two to a teammate.

The back-up custodians of Arsenal, Spurs, Liverpool, Man Utd and Man City are all listed at this price, curiously, so we’re only a fitness issue away from a Champions League contender having a £4.0m option between the posts.

For FPL managers looking to spend as little as possible on goalkeepers, these are the only £4.5m/£4.0m first-choice/reserve combinations at the time of writing:

Team£4.5m first-choice goalkeeper£4.0m reserve goalkeeper
BournemouthTraversDennis
BrightonSanchezSteele
EvertonPickfordBegovic
FulhamRodakGazzaniga
LeedsMeslierKlaesson

We’ve omitted Brentford from the above list, as the arrival of the as-yet-unpriced Strakosha will push Ellery Balcombe (£4.0m) down into third in the pecking order.

Forest haven’t yet got a reserve goalkeeper priced up but whoever that is will also surely come in at £4.0m.

Remi Matthews, Mateusz Lis and Willy Caballero (all £4.0m) are likely to be third or fourth choices at their respective teams, meanwhile.

Again, pre-season and any injuries could change the situation ahead of Gameweek 1.

FPL POINTS PREDICTIONS

Havent touch this draft for a week, any obvious changes needed?
    Mendy
    TAA Robertson Cancelo James Chilwell
    Salah Martinelli Neto
    Haaland Jesus
    Balcombe Andreas Murphy Greenwood
3xChelsea risky of course, maybe one of James/Chilwell to Peresic.
    What do you think?

Murphy won't get any gametime so I'd recommend a different 4.5, that's all the intelligent critique I can give

You don't want an actual sub to be your FPL sub. You want someone that will play 90 minutes so you can get at least 2 points when he is called upon.

I continue to not be a fan of Mendy
Best results included 16 clean sheets which is great! but the 140 points that came with it is not.
Several choices at 5 have gotten the same or more points with fewer clean sheets. I mean, Pope got 130 with 9.
Alisson (who is more, I get it) got the same 140 points with 10 clean sheets the same season.
Just think there are better options..quite a few actually.

Problem with Mendy as you suggest is he hasn’t previously had many save or bonus points. Hard to know with Chelsea currently how they will line up and if it will also gel from the beginning.

    Meslier Raya
    Trent Trippier Perisic Cash Tomiyasu
    Salah Diaz Kulu Martinelli Andreas
    Haaland Jesus Greenwood

Would play 5-3-2 or 4-4-2 dependent on how nailed Martinelli is and fixtures for defenders.

Reconsidered and here is where I currently stand (for a few minutes anyway)

    Raya/Sanchez
    Cash/James/Robertson/N.Williams/Cancelo
    Martinelli/Salah/Bruno G./JWP/Neto
    Jesus/Edouard/Haaland

Edouard and Bruno are my flex players and they continue to be in/out most days.
But sticking until I can Improve.

    Which is where?

Edouard first to go, as he lost his place to Mateta last year. Although that doesn't make Mateta much more of an attractive option either tbf.

Finding a Striker spot in the 5.5 range is tough that would help out in a pinch.

Palace have a tough start but I kind of like Edouard. Maybe not enough to keep him but I am hopeful I can find more options.

I am coming to be settled on this simple draft and simple FPl idea for weeks 1-8 due to the nature of the fixtures and WC week 9

0.5mil left over for price changes for any price changes that occur

    Ramsdale
    Chillwell James TAA Cancelo Robertson
    Diaz Mount Saka
    Jesus Kane (c)*

*Transfer used only to switch the one premium for captain to haaland given fixtures

Given the fixures the above should do ok and potentially better than a Salah + random cheap you hope does ok (e.g neto)

Besides the fixtures i feel this year its less likely people move a Jesus/Diaz/ Robertson out for a cheapie who does ok since their (Che/City/Ars/Liv) fixtures are so good anyway its a low impact move

Therefore keeping transfers to Move kane and Haaland around for captains gives this until week 6 when then reassess for week 7-8 captain

SOU BOU WOL nfo NFO FUL

It makes the game way easier that bar injuries due to the fixtures the transfers are just moving the captain slot around. And its unique situation for this year given the extra WC and fixtures for the top 6 this year.

        Yes for sure

If injuries come then a -4 to move one of the main guys to an alternative

        e.g /Maddison/Kulu/ Perisic/ Toney

is viable , i dont think being afraid of injuries would be a deal breaker for me here

I like it, looking at something very similar, but with Mendy in goal and replacing James / Chillwell with Diaz / Laporte. 3x 8.0 mids allow flexibility to move to whoever is firing at that price point (Sancho, Kulu, Madders)

I’d consider no Salah myself but not from the offset. The man has proved himself to be one of, if not *the* highest point scorer every season and from memory has also started the last few seasons very strongly. With captaincy he’ll have the highest ownership in the game against a newly promoted team.

Is it really worth the risk? To accommodate Mount who we don’t even know will start if Tuchel maintains a 5 at the back considering they’re linked with another new winger and Saka who has Crystal Palace away that they previously lost 3-0 to.

With that said it is a nice team if you’re happy with the risk!

    Ramsdale / 4,0

    TAA / Robertson / Cancelo / Laporte / Percic

    Diaz / Odegard / Coutinho / Son / 4,5

Captain options? “You can C a defender or cheaper player”

Villa only good for first few GWs so pretty much locking a transfer on Cout already, Barnes or punt on bernardo at the same price or that 8m tag is very close too. Bowen seems to be the focal point for west ham now so could look at Wilson, Watkins or even Jiminez but all have their own drawbacks. Rashy or Martinelli over ode even despite xmins. I think theres a conversation to be had for kane vs Son but it depends how you want your team set up. I like the rest though.

Norwich were awful last season, rooted to the bottom of the league, and yet Pukki was still good value.

Looking at Solanke's eye-watering goal involvement, and Bournemouth's pacey counter-attacking style, I think Solanke could be the good value talisman Pukki was...

They can be good pick for certain periods but they often go on a run of blanks irrespective of what their fixtures are. Tough to pick and drop on right time if you are looking to do that. If sticking for whole season, then it might work. Someone for draft I guess.

Very surprised to see so few drafts with triple City…

There won’t be an easier 6 GW run for any team in the league all season, than City’s opening 6.

    Triple City is a no-brainer.

Attackers, yes. But the defence still picks itself. Cancelo, Ederson, Diaz are 3… then you can gamble on Håland (as one of your 2 premiums), Mahrez, Foden, Bilva.

But you can afford much more attacking James and Chilwell for the price of Laporte and Diaz, for example. Much more attacking Perisic and Doherty are even cheaper. One mln to add and you can get Robbo.

Though i have a triple up City (Cancelo Foden Haaland)

My guess would be the rotation risks given Pep's track record. I've certainly been stung by it many times in the past, which is the reason i've only gone with 2 for now.

The problem with picking 3, 2 of which are in defence as you’ve suggested is it makes it harder to jump on a city winger if they pop off.

I think most people are opting for 2 and leaving the 3rd slot open for once we have more information.

Walker points across previous seasons even projecting to 3k minutes has never been great. Better options particularly as he also locks in a 3rd city slot imo

Walkers value per game (points/game/£m) was 0.9 when he had an average cost of £5.4m last season. Only Laporte, Matip and then Tierney & Chalobah (who played just 58% & 50% of games respectively) were better value.

And now Walker is only £5m.

He’s back from injury and no reason why he won’t play most games now. If he doesn’t play wide, it’s because he’s needed at CB - so more security of minutes.

Rashford agreed. Still flipping between Martinelli Rashford BrunoG for the final spot for now. Will see how Pre season plays out.

I must add there was a filter that players had to have played at least 50%… so real outliers like Chilwell, Trippier, Stones, Sarr we’re excluded.

I’ve just done the math on Reece James in comparison and he exceeds the number you’ve given so I’m not sure where you’ve got this list from?

Anyhow I don’t think Walker will play every game but even if you take last season and multiply to get 3000 minutes you get ~145 points. Personally I think that’s a poor return from a 3rd city slot and there are plenty of alternatives at this price range that will produce similar or greater at less rotation risk (assuming cucurella joins)

Both options have a fullback who will at best play 2/3 of the time

Im very much against going Spurs fullbacks for these reasons

Conte is known to rotate and he will have 4 players who will for sure rotate

  14. Offside Trapattoni
    • 7 Years

    Mendy
    Chillwell James TAA Cancelo Perisic
    Salah Saka Bruno
    Haaland Mitrovic

Forster Andreas Colback Greenwood (with .5 in the bank)

As someone who watches a lot of Serie A, I can't understate what an impact Koulibaly will make. Going triple Chelsea to begin.

Leaning Saka over Jesus, at that 8.0 price they probably produce similar returns and gut tells me Nketiah might poach some of his minutes early on. I really like Perisic under Conte, thinking he will thrive once again in his wingback setup. Also thinking Mitrovic will be one of if not the highest non-defending 6.5 assets, so that is perhaps my biggest early gamble.

    Any feedback welcome, grazie amici-

With the arsenal fixtures going both saka and jesus until week 9 is the easy play.

Both will score well in most scenarios

Martinelli will for sure rotate with Smith rowe and possible Veira and even Jesus if he goes occasionally to the wing

          First 2 yes

Next few up to week 8 are decent

It was my view if you were doing short term then other besides jesus were better

          Longterm he is the pick.

Im leaning more towards not using transfers on such places now and using the transfers for captain moves - then a longterm pick is better so Jesus is fine up to WC

Kind of glad. They already got a bargain in Sterling, not fair if they got Raphinha too.

I'm surprised there wasn't more competition for Sterling given he was in his last year of contract. Very good price.

Hoping United compete. I think De Jong and Eriksen would transform the team when in possession. Hope they sign them.

Add in some quality defensive signings combined with some discipline and organisation from Ten Hag and they might do well. The team came 2nd just one season ago.

Agree. The top 2 won't be caught, although the gap could narrow. If ETH gives United back its mojo - and I think he will, things could be quite tight between them and the 3 London clubs. Who doesn't like a bit of nail-biting competition?

Hoping for the same, signings have been underwhelming so far for Utd.
If the only thing holding FDJ back is the huge money owed to him by Barca then it would be good to get him, but either Fred or McT has to go then. If even after all this time he is not fully convinced to come to Utd then better to let him go. Don't want another player with a chip on his shoulder.
A good striker needs to be signed if CR7 looks like leaving.

Going for 3 premium attackers is so tempting with Salah, KDB, Haaland, Son and Kane in the mix. (Ronaldo, Bruno etc. are also there, but need to see some form, consistency and results to dip into that particular batch of players)
    But:
    1) Looking at last few year's points per million per game, i have to say that going mid-price looks more logical along with 2 premium players.
    2) The new 5 subs rule has all the makings of strikers being pulled even more likely and earlier in the games.
    Thoughts?

It’s a nice team, you’re essentially gambling that Sterling + Bruno will outscore 2 x 8.0 mids, which personally though I’m not so sure they will. I think Sterling will do well but will he hit the ground running? Any week he blanks you’ll likely slide rank significantly considering the other players you have are template.

It’s a really nice team though, could be lovely if it pays off.

    1. BERGKOP

It does show although I think this is the season to go hard early (with the additional "WC"). Relying on Neco and Gordon week in week out isn't ideal.

      1. Athletic Nasherbo
        • 7 Years
        1 year, 9 months ago

I agree, but these guys are 4.0 and 5.5 respectively. Neco has the potential to frustrate those who bench him as previous 4.0 defenders such as Lundstram have done.

        I really rate Gordon’s prospects.

If I swapped BrunoG for James I think people would realise it’s essentially the same as the popular back 5, just without Neto.

I also have Alisson, TAA, Perisic, Salah, Son, Jesus, and Haaland to protect rank and achieve points. They are all popular (if not the most popular in their positions)

Tomiyasu will tick along, as I hope BrunoG will.

Neco and Gordon thus are the punts and at such a cheap price I’m all for it.

Only the fact that Salah is such a good captaincy option, set and forget, potentially. It is all about if the 3x 8.0 mids can cover that?
I am currently thinking along the 3x 8.0 mids at the moment btw, due to the high number of assets with potential available at that price point

One premium draft makes an excellent spread of funds to real decent longterm (week1-8) picks

Then transfers only between Kane and Haaland

Surprised others havent looked into it.

There is every chance this year Salah may not be like his crazy start of season level and this below draft would be easily valuable.

Rumours recently that Chelsea are trying to hijack Lewa's move to Barca. That would shake up the template!

It's not really a hijack. Lewa only wants Barca but they probably can't afford him. What I can see is another deadline day deal (4 GWs into the season) where he's burnt his bridges with Bayern, Barca is closed and he reluctantly trucks off to Chelsea. Kinda like Lukaku last year!

    How's this one looking?

    Raya
    Robbo / Laporte / Tomiyasu / Perisic / Mings
    Salah / Diaz / Son / Bruno G.
    Haaland

    4.0 / Andreas / 4.5 / 4.5

Decent, no points wasted on bench, 6 great attacking players ( 7 if perisic fires )

He’s a 4m playing defender I don’t think many people will care if someone else in the squad is injured ?

Yates is out for about a month. He will miss Newcastle probably, but may be back before.
