FPL transfers: The latest new Premier League signings assessed

Our latest Fantasy Premier League (FPL) transfer round-up looks at some more moves from the last fortnight.

The most significant players will be the subject of their own dedicated Scout Report but all the others will feature in regular round-ups over pre-season, continuing with this one.

You’ll find all the major deals on our dedicated Transfers page, while you can get a club-by-club guide to the key moves via our comprehensive Pre-Season tab.

Our sister website, Fantasy Football Community, also has a daily round-up of the latest transfer rumours.

You can find more articles on the likes of Erling Haaland, Gabriel Jesus and Ivan Perisic in our Scout Reports section.

FPL TRANSFER ROUND-UP

Tyrell Malacia (Feyenoord to Manchester United, £13m)

The first signing of Erik ten Hag’s reign at Manchester United, 22-year-old Tyrell Malacia looked set to sign for Lyon until this late hijack. It can be deduced that ten Hag highly rates this athletic left-back after watching him star for Ajax’s rivals Feyenoord in their run to the Europa Conference League final.

Priced at £4.5m in FPL, Malacia has strong potential if he moves ahead of Luke Shaw (£5.0m) in the pecking order. Currently, there is optimism over Man Utd assets, like in midfield where several have received huge price drops.

Under a new head coach, their players could emerge as great options – we just don’t yet know which ones.

Aaron Hickey (Bologna to Brentford, £17m)

After being linked with Arsenal for a while, Aaron Hickey (£5.0m) instead signed for Brentford. He’s yet another talented Scottish left-back, although his versatility often saw him at right-back and left wing-back whilst at Bologna.

Information from WhoScored

Therefore it’s not completely clear whose spot is in danger – Rico Henry (£4.5m) or Sergi Canos (£5.0m). Comfortable with both feet, Hickey managed to score five times last season, becoming the first Scot to do so in Serie A since Graeme Souness in 1984-85.

Brentford begin with a strong run of games, although managers may prefer David Raya (£4.5m) as a cheaper route to defensive coverage.

Clement Lenglet (Barcelona to Tottenham Hotspur, loan)

Spurs’ fifth signing of an exciting summer is the loan of centre-back Clement Lenglet from Barcelona. FPL has already priced the left-footer at £5.0m, with the French international likely to take Ben Davies‘ (£5.0m) spot on the left of Antonio Conte’s back three.

His main strength is ball-playing, which could add another dimension to the attacking potential of Harry Kane (£11.5m) and Son Heung-min (£12.0m). Perhaps Lenglet’s weakness is actual defending, like when he was widely blamed for Switzerland’s opening goal during France’s round of 16 exit at Euro 2020. He was taken off at half-time.

The 27-year-old shined during his 18 months at Sevilla and will hope this new environment brings him back to that level. For FPL managers, Lenglet saves £0.5m on Ivan Perisic and Hugo Lloris but without the attacking potential or security of starts.

Cheick Doucoure (Lens to Crystal Palace, undisclosed)

Although undisclosed, reports say that Crystal Palace paid around £21m to land exciting Mali international Cheick Doucoure.

Handed a £5.0m FPL price, he will take the spot of successful loan signing Conor Gallagher (£6.0m) but don’t expect the eight goals of last season.

That same number arrived over four seasons at Lens, where his central partnership with Seko Fofana played a huge part in the successive seventh-place finishes that followed their return to Ligue 1.

Information from FBRef

More of a box-to-box midfielder, Doucoure is great at breaking up the play with ball interceptions, whilst helping transition with short passes and driving runs upfield.

Joe Aribo (Rangers to Southampton, undisclosed)

Fresh from scoring in last season’s Europa League final, midfielder Joe Aribo has returned to England by signing for Southampton.

The Nigeria international spent three years playing in League One for Charlton before an equivalent length of time at Rangers, delivering 26 goals and 25 assists in all competitions.

“We believe Joe can bring energy and creativity to our side. Feeling comfortable in so many different positions is very helpful for a manager and shows he has a high level of football intelligence, with the ability to take on new information quickly.” – Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl

This eye for goal helped in the latter stages of 2021/22 when a bad injury situation saw Aribo play up front. Yet he didn’t skip a beat, showcasing a versatility that could prove useful on the south coast.

FPL has priced the 25-year-old left-footer at £5.5m and, as the Saints usually deploy a 4-4-2 system, there is even a chance he could be used as an out-of-position forward.

Romeo Lavia (Manchester City to Southampton, £10.5m)

Aribo’s chances of starting in a midfield two further decreased with the addition of Romeo Lavia (£4.5m). The 18-year-old is yet to start a first-team league match but is the latest example of Southampton spending big and putting faith in ‘big six’ youth prospects.

Following last season’s purchase of Tino Livramento (£4.5m) and borrowing of Armando Broja (£5.5m), the Saints have now recruited Lavia and goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu (£4.5m) from Manchester City. A hat-trick will be completed should they also buy Liam Delap (£4.5m) from the champions.

Lavia’s inexperience, defensive-mindedness and tough early fixtures will keep FPL managers away.

Tyler Adams (RB Leipzig to Leeds United, £20m)

While coping with the huge loss of both Kalvin Phillips (£5.0m) and Raphinha, head coach Jesse Marsch has turned to familiar faces from his stints at both Red Bull Salzburg and RB Leipzig.

The latest addition is dynamic central midfielder Tyler Adams (£5.0m). This USA international can also play at right-back, although the signing of Rasmus Kristensen (£5.0m) likely rules that out.

In an interesting piece for The Athletic, Adams speaks in depth about his own game and the way he thinks when on the pitch.

“I always err on the side that I’m going to win every single ball, so I tend to be aggressive and go for it. In the Red Bull DNA, counter-pressing is such an important thing. We try to win the ball as quickly as possible and aren’t afraid to make mistakes because we’re confident in our pressing as a team.”

“As a defensive midfielder, I think way, way more than I do as an outside back. I’m usually the only midfielder who is thinking of transition moments and what I need to do if my team loses the ball. It’s why I win a lot of balls. I’m always thinking about, ‘If this ball pops out here, am I in a good position to win it?’

“This part of my game – winning duels and running after balls – is something that I enjoy doing. I have a really big engine, I’m usually the fittest person on the field, so making these recovery runs, sprinting back to help win the ball back, is something that I’m good at.”

Key to Leeds United’s transformation this season will be the partnership Adams forms with fellow addition Marc Roca (£5.0m). He might not be an FPL prospect – having scored just twice in 103 Leipzig appearances – but may give hope to supporters that they can avoid relegation.

Flynn Downes (Swansea City to West Ham United, £12m)

Crystal Palace almost added Flynn Downes (£4.5m) to the impressive capture of Doucoure but were pipped late on by his boyhood club West Ham United.

A product of Ipswich Town’s youth academy, he moved to Swansea City last season and completed 92.6% of his 2,465 attempted passes – the highest pass-completion rate throughout England’s top four divisions. Having moved to east London, he can now team up with second-placed Declan Rice (91.6%).

148 career games have brought four goals and six assists, which should deter FPL managers.

Omar Richards (Bayern Munich to Nottingham Forest, undisclosed)

The round-up ends with a pair of defensive Nottingham Forest transfers. Firstly, left-back Omar Richards (£4.5m) arrives from Bayern Munich just a year after leaving Reading.

Richards made 12 Bundesliga outings and, according to WhoScored, has the skill set needed to excel as Steve Cooper’s left wing-back.

However, the signing jeopardises Jack Colback (£4.5m) being a steady provider of cheap midfield appearance points and it isn’t as tempting as having £4.0m teammate Neco Williams at right wing-back.

Moussa Niakhate (Mainz to Nottingham Forest, undisclosed)

Pacy centre-back Moussa Niakhate (£4.5m) is another to swap Germany for Nottingham, moving after four years at Mainz.

It’s a deal that proves just how powerful a pull the Premier League is, with an established 26-year-old defender choosing to join a newly-promoted team.

“The two wide centre-backs [at Nottingham Forest] are often key to progression, they will be charged with driving into midfield, attracting defensive cover to spring the two wing-backs who, in turn, will look to slot in the front two with their pace in behind.”Mark Sutherns

Although Niakhate’s four recent goals were preceded by three in 2020/21, he does seem to commit an above-average number of fouls, conceding 1.7 per game last season.

Apart from Neco Williams, Forest defenders are probably best avoided for the time being.

Saw this comment on socials and it concerns me with Spurs:

Still haven’t heard a single mention about the fact that Son is looking to play 3 games in a week at the East Asian championships the week before the PL starts. Those games are in Japan so jet lag plus the 3 game factor are a concern

Wouldn't be too concerned, might mean he gets subbed off against Southampton but that's probably likely anyway. I'd say a lot of teams will want to be pretty busy with matches the closer we get to the season starting.

        No.

It's Anthony Gordon who I'm looking at now. With Richarlison gone, he has a lot of creative license and set pieces.

Yeah, I've gone Gordon too. He'll be playing some and bench on others, but he looks to be great value and a key part of that Everton side.

Settled with this, not even tempted to tinker at the moment. Thoughts? Salah could kill me early doors but there’s something about the idea of Pool without Mane/Jota - think they’ll struggle.

Leicesters first 5 fixtures are terrible. Would rather have Diaz/Foden/Mahrez over Madders. Rest of team is good.

Like Raya although there is some risk with them signing a new GK. You say you have a fodder bench, it may be worth ensuring you have a decent GK on the bench such as meslier or Pickford or Sanchez.

Can't argue with the back four, I assume your fifth defender will be Neco Williams?

Midfield three is very non template. Personally, I will stick with Salah but if I was going without I would want Luiz Diaz (8.0). Mount could be a very good option although his minutes may be hampered by chelseas spending spree. As other people have said I wouldn't want to start with Maddison, look to Coutinho Zaha or Bilva at that price point instead. Not convinced with Wissa either really, if there's a way to upgrade him to Martinelli perhaps?

        Front three is bang on

i think it's hard to start with Haaland and Kane cause when one is out, no equal replacement while Haaland and Kane can replace each other

maybe drop one of them and pick Son over Maddison

I made almost exactly this team except Maddison and Wissa but Now I have decided against it. I have never went with 3 pricey strikers in the past and probably never do it in the future. Pricey strikers have least value plus there are so many options in mid

If you prefer them over Haaland/Salah then you should replace one of them with Kane/Son, but 3 is too many IMO, you can only captain one, so pick the rotation you like best.

I’m gonna have Kulusevski, no Son/Kane to start with.

His spot to start but 5 sub rule means he will get taken off at some point but this is what we will see next season across all teams

I am starting with him personally but may switch to another cheap Arsenal such Vieira who I think will do well when given his chance or Bruno G if playing advanced CM still & getting returns

Basically my team so far but still torn whether to start Kane and switch to Haaland or stick with Haaland from the start and bank the FT

also still considering the need for TAA or go with VVD and allocate the extra 1.0 to upgrade Rash to Sancho

i agree with that although Kane has a worse history of drought in August and on the contrary, Haaland seems to always have a great start in the early gameweeks, so maybe it's a coin toss for now

There is a pretty clear argument against Salah-clear alternative captains for the first five weeks (Spurs/City) and Liverpool’s other players are some of the best value in the game.

although I still start with him, I have a slight doubt about him being with the salary hike can create intense competitiveness internally and with Nunez and Diaz are competing to prove their worth, things might not go so easy opportunity-wise for Salah

Aside from the salary thing simply just not having Mane and Firmino/Jota means Salah is slightly unknown in how he'll play

It could be Salah and 2 almost brand new players (Nunez Diaz) so what will the dynamic be

Remember the name... Crysencio Summerville. He is quicker than Dan James.
12 goals and 7 assists (plus he won a few penalties) in 24 PL2 matches (attack return every 82 mins).
          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7tNS4SW59DA
What Jesse Marsch has said about him:
“You could see the raw talent he had. He’s only tiny, he’s like five foot nothing but he’s got wonderful balance. One vs one is his strength, against players. He’s quite a free spirit out on the wing, in a good way. He’ll excite you, he’s a bag of tricks."
“I’ve got to find ways to include Summerville, Cree, more, so all three of [Summerville, Joe Gelhardt and Sam Greenwood] are going to be big players here and are important for us moving forward.”
"I thought he played fantastic. I think he has grown here more and more. Cry is doing a great job of showing he is learning more, that he is more prepared and we can count on him more and more."
"I think that he is doing a great job in the matches, showing that he is learning more and that he is more prepared and that we can count on him more and more.”

I think this will be Summerville's big breakthrough season, listed as a £4.5m mid on FPL.

1 is fine, assuming you are playing 5-3-2.

If you are I'd be wary of going without at least one of Cancelo, James or Chilwell, as you are going to be super reliant on your defenders to bulk up your weekly scores.

You can get Meslier's handcuff, Klaesson for £4 0m instead of benching Raya, and Neto at £5.5m is a lot of money on your bench unnecessarily.

After initially being against the 3 premiums, now I’m wondering if it’s doable without breaking team balance.

          A) 3 premium.

          Mendy
          TAA Cancelo Chilwell Tomiyasu Jonny
          Salah Rashford Neto
          Haaland Kane

          Gazzaniga Andreas DaSilva Greenwood

          B) 2 premiums

          Mendy
          Trent Cancelo Chilwell Tripper Tomiyasu
          Salah Luiz Rashford
          Haaland Jesus

          Gazzaniga Andreas DaSilva Greenwood
          0.5m

                Threemium looks pretty good.

I moved to it at the start of the week and am now considering replacing Salah + 2 cheap mids with 3x £8.0m mids instead, but threemium definitely possible.

Ake staying at City according to David Ornstein. Shame, i'd pencilled him in as a £5m Chelsea CB with set-piece threat.

I said the other day when the Koulibably news broke that I thought City may have decided against letting him go, doesn't really make sense letting someone like him go to a rival, especially given they know they'd have to replace him

Yeah it was looking like City were gonna leave themselves very thin if they let Ake and Zinny go too as well as Jesus and Raheem. Ah well.

Guess that's why Chelsea have become interested in Kimpembe, which will still make them solid. He just won't come in at £5m.

Reading between the lines of what Ornstein says, the sticking point is the transfer fee. Chelsea are also going after that guy from PSG but he wants to stay, so I can see them returning to Ake and paying City's valuation.

It sounds like a bit of both to me, Chelsea wouldn't meet the price but City also decided that they don't want to let him go and that he'll play a bigger part this season. Zinchenko leaving (even if Cucurella signs) would mean they need that extra bit of cover at LB and Ake looked decent there when he had to play there. I was very impressed with him when he came into the side last season in both positions

Yeah, me too. Not only from an fpl perspective, I’ve named my teams “save us ETH”. I don’t expect United to be top 3 or even 4 with how well Spurs and Chelsea have done so far in the transfer market but I’m optimistic we will be better than last season, which wouldn’t be too hard I guess!

I’m heading to OT for the midweek Spurs game in Oct, I reckon it will be the makings of a great match Spud

Would you say 1 of Kane or Son is a must have at the start? Obviously proven FPL assets, but things looking good for Spurs under Conte and some decent transfers made. Feels weird not having either of them in my team atm. Plus due to their price would be fairly difficult to get them in sooner rather than later once the season starts

No, personally I’m going for both because it helps me enjoy the spurs games to the max but I’d probably start halland salah and 8m mids if I was just choosing the ‘best’ team

Some of the threemium teams with son halland and salah look ok to be fair but not essential

Could be some jerky knees if they start well

Must have is hard to define, considering they're both premiums and for a lot it will mean going without Salah or Haaland/KDB. But after a few days of having Kulusevski in my draft, I realised I wasn't happy with him and felt that I'd be too worried about rotation each week. I think if you want a Spurs asset for attacking returns it's Kane/Son or no-one

I think the problem now is that the budget and pricing mean it becomes a case of either Salah or Son and Kane or Haaland.

Salah opening his account against Fulham, and Haaland up front for a City team that will regularly put 3 or 4 past their opponents, even the good ones, makes it risky to go without him (and its not like you can get KdB instead if you go Kane and Son(.

Its a tough decision, as you basically have to sacrifice Son/Kane, Salah, or Håland - or a few midpricers if you're going threemium. I think the key question is, can you match or better Salah's captaincy scores by, for example, rotating Son & Håland (C)? If yes, then, there's plenty of other good value Liverpool assets - which is perhaps not quite as true of Spurs and perhaps City if KDB/Håland end up monopolising their attacking returns like Son/Kane.

I personally think we'll continue to see the best of Son under Conte & expect to see him right up there with Salah again

Threemium draft. I am liking this one. Any suggestions?

            Raya (4)
            TAA Chillwell Digne Tomi (Neco)
            Salah Martinelli Diaz Neto (Andreas)

The main issue that consistently stands out to me with the threemium approach is a lack of flexibility in terms of transfers in future gwks. As a team, on paper, they tend to look quite strong but what are the potential changes in gw3, 5 etc. Price locked into 5.5m mids and 5m defenders unless someone like Diaz is downgraded (or a premium of course but that would be strange considering the overall approach) which then begins a process of watering down multiple positions to accommodate three main picks.

I attempted to make a threemium squad a few days ago out of boredom (not considering it myself as I'm basically ready to go with my team/structure) and although I did find what I would consider to be a fairly well-balanced team, it did require sacrifices in defense and the same issue arose about where exactly to make transfers in future weeks. It just feels like a locked team in many ways and that doesn't appeal to me.

I have that team saved just for reference, this is it....

                Raya
                Tomiyasu/James/Chilwell/VVD/Laporte
                Salah/Rashford/Martinelli/Son
                Haaland

I get the flexibility point. Just thinking it's worth a punt that the threemiums smash it early. Got the 8 mil mid to switch around and any cheap mid gems can be brought in. With the game effectively in 8 week blocks I am willing to take the risk atm.

                  1. DelPiero10

I'm fairly confident those four main premiums will do the business but I remain unconvinced that having three of them will outweigh added strength in 4, 5, or even 6 other squad positions. Also taking into account that other will have at least one of those premiums and most likely two of them... hmm, is one more worth it? It remains to be seen I suppose.

It's certainly a trade off. But this is a unique season with a early wc and unlimited world cup transfers which I think risks and different approaches (that you would not normally consider) are worth a go.

One additional might not be but two additional premiums could be 😉

It's possible, of course. I just find it unlikely and I have spent time on this - not only multiple different setups but also potential transfers over the opening 6-8 gwks. The conclusion was that threemium is the least flexible in terms of using transfers to pick up additional points (hopefully) up to our first WC. Two premium squads had a larger scope in terms of transfers and although unpopular for the most part, I found one premium to be the smoothest ride in terms of overall flexibility and also eliminating certain price points that I don't favor and replacing them with massive haul potential.

Oh I do not disagree with your logic at all. When I said 2 additional premiums I meant with a 4x premium team. It only takes 2 transfer to downgrade and get in whoever you are missing that way and you still have other premiums. The potential value in the cheap players is incredible imo. A lot of scope to increase value if you select the correct ones.

Includes zero data in the reasoning. Why didn't he just the data from Inter 21/22?

The whole podcast seemed very inconsistent in regards to logic (based on data presented). He talks of value yet ranks Dias as the worst option when Dias' point per start is greater than Laporte. Points per start / price would give a better representation of value in my opinion.
If anything this podcast has made me think Dias is a better pick than Cancelo.
The expected goal involvement figures look a bit iffy too. So Robertson and VVD both overperformed by nearly 200%!? and TAA underperformed...

33yr old rotation risk imo. Not that he won’t be first choice but if spurs are cruising in games I can see him frustrating owners being subbed before the 60mins regularly

I agree. Perisic is a punt, simple as that. Not nailed at all. To call him the second-best premium defender is ridiculous.

Yeah, agree. Lenglet is a left footer and will play LCB of the 3 CB so Davies is dropped. Sessegnon and Davies can play in that LWB position and 5subs now, I’m not sold. I had Perisic in many of my original drafts but feel a bit better about not owning now. Have to stick to my guns on that one however, good chance he hauls gw1!

Looking at last season he played most the games for 90 minutes at LWB & ended the season on fire with 6 goals & 3 assists in last 10 league games & 2 more in the cup final.

Seems to still be fit enough but a Conte will probably give him more rest

Conte bought him so I see that as a sign he will be first choice but will come off early but is that a bad thing if after 60 minutes to lock down an early CS & he does get regular goals & assists.

I’m trying to use the logic that there are less cs at the beginning of the season and investing in attack with the view of using the WC early enough to spend money in defence then. The premium defenders price won’t go up much to gain value in the early weeks because of price I reckon but some of those 4.5 will shoot up if they start well. I’m looking to gain value on the cheaper defenders, hopefully, before jumping to premium defenders.

What's everyone's thought on how the world cup in nov/Dec will effect fpl this season?
Are we better off picking players pre World Cup who aren't going or fringe squad players trying to impress rather than kane for example whose nailed on
How hard will those nailed on players be trying to avoid injuries in the last couple of weeks pre World Cup

I don't think it'll affect my pre- Wolrd Cup decisions all that much. Maybe some players with extra motivation to force their way into a starting place could boost form, but I probably wouldn't get them for that reason alone.

But after the WC, we'll definitely have to pay attention to mins racked up, and be especially wary of anyone who ended up playing multiple games going to ET / pens.

I would bet on Doherty. Reasons being, he is better than Royal who is wasteful and missed a sitter in the pre season game already that Doherty would have buried and Spence might not be thrown in gw1 and need time to bed. Would be a kick in the teeth by Conte to the other two to fire him in immediately. However, they are the tough decisions a manager needs to make I guess!

Doherty, still think he's far better on the ball than Emerson. These transfer rumours aren't wholly convincing to me - I mean, there's a chance I'm wrong & some off-field issues are going on, but the reporting has been really sloppy. If he's forced out for not progressing the ball quickly enough, I dont see how Emerson's bang it & hope is any improvement. Spence, yet to play a min in PL, would presumably be eased in
