FPL

The best mid-price and premium FPL goalkeepers for 2022/23

We pick out the best £5.0m and £5.5m Fantasy Premier League (FPL) goalkeepers as we continue our trawl through the price list.

Premium goalkeepers have been unfashionable for a while now, with budget shot-stoppers like Aaron Ramsdale and Emiliano Martinez popping up in recent seasons to offer superior value.

However, FPL have taken a new approach with premium ‘keepers this year, perhaps trying to tempt many of us away from the above strategy, with the most expensive options now costing just £5.5m.

With unlimited transfers allowed during the World Cup downtime and a Wildcard to use before then, we’re focusing mostly on Gameweeks 1-8 in this article.

You can read a rundown of the best budget goalkeepers here.

Opta stats on the players featured in these articles are available in our Premium Members Area, where you can now get a full year’s subscription for just £2.49 a month.

Who played the most minutes over the March international break?

ALISSON

Alisson (£5.5m) finished as FPL’s highest-scoring ‘keeper in 2021/22 with 176 points, at least 18 more than any of his rivals, but has seen his price surprisingly drop by half a million.

The Brazilian shared the Premier League Golden Glove award with Ederson (£5.5m) last season, after keeping a whopping 20 clean sheets in 35 appearances for Liverpool.

He also finished top for bonus (15) among goalkeepers – something you don’t usually associate with the big guns – while 4.9 points per match was another league-leading figure among those who are first choice.

His popularity last season certainly took a hit due to his price and the performances of Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m), Andrew Robertson (£7.0m) and Joel Matip (£6.0m), but this time, he is the cheapest and most secure route into Liverpool’s backline, which does boost his appeal.

Alisson has been central to the Reds’ recent success under Jurgen Klopp, and will surely be a popular choice for FPL managers given his price drop. Indeed, he is currently the second-most selected ‘keeper in FPL, sitting in 18.8% of embryonic squads.

EDERSON

Ederson finished 21 points behind Alisson at the top of the FPL scoring charts last season, but could be an excellent choice between the sticks in 2022/23.

As discussed above, the Brazilian co-shared the Golden Glove award with Alisson in 2021/22 but a lack of save points (just seven in 37 appearances) and bonus points (four) meant he finished some way short of the Liverpool shot-stopper in the overall standings:

PlayerAppsClean sheetsGoals concededSavesBonusFPL points
Alisson3620247515176
Ederson372026604155

However, Manchester City bossed the all-important underlying stats last season, and have since added Kalvin Phillips (£5.0m) to their ranks, further bolstering their defensive depth.

Clean sheetsGoals concededBig chances concededxGC
Man City21264026.18
Liverpool21264937.88

As a result, Ederson at just £5.5m is an appealing option in Gameweek 1, especially if you are backing Man City’s domination to continue.

AARON RAMSDALE

Despite a late run of blanks, Aaron Ramsdale’s (£5.0m) total of 12 clean sheets in 34 starts in 2021/22 was only bettered by those representing the top four.

Alisson, meanwhile, was the only ‘keeper who could beat him for bonus (14) across the season.

The former Sheffield United man’s last shut-out arrived in Gameweek 29, as Arsenal struggled to cope defensively following injuries to Kieran Tierney (5.0m) and, in particular, Thomas Partey (£5.0m). In fact, the Gunners lost six Premier League matches from 23 with Partey in the starting XI, compared to seven from 14 when he was absent.

As a result, that meant the season ended on a slightly sour note for Ramsdale but he still finished with a very respectable 4.0 points per match.

His ownership is currently nearing 10%, and given Arsenal’s opening fixture run – they sit top of our Season Ticker from Gameweeks 1-8 – he could be a nice pickup.

EDOUARD MENDY

Currently the most owned FPL goalkeeper at 25.1%, Chelsea’s Edouard Mendy (£5.0m) is unsurprisingly a popular pick after his surprise £1.0m price drop from last season.

The Senegal international made a few mistakes in 2021/22 – the defeat to West Ham United in December was a notable one – but for the most part, was a reliable asset for Thomas Tuchel’s side, keeping 14 clean sheets and racking up a total of 130 points.

However, it’s worth noting that budget shot-stoppers like David Raya (£4.5m) and Vicente Guaita (£4.5m) averaged more FPL points per match (4.0) than Mendy (3.8), with his cause not helped by just 14 save points and three bonus points.

Chelsea’s defence did falter towards the end of last season, but with reinforcements expected – they have lost Antonio Rudiger but have recently been linked with Kalidou Koulibaly and Nathan Ake (£5.0m) – they will be expected to mount a stronger title push in 2022/23, with their potential for clean sheets still among the highest in the division.

Mendy offers FPL managers a value route into Chelsea’s defence, and given that the Blues only face two of the so-called top six clubs in their opening 12 fixtures, is an appealing option.

THE OTHER £5.0M/£5.5M GOALKEEPERS: THE PROS AND CONS

Hugo Lloris (£5.5m) returned a clean sheet in 12 of his 27 appearances under Antonio Conte, conceding just 24 goals in that time. His three double-digit hauls was joint-top among goalkeepers, while only Alisson could beat him overall for FPL points and value. The strength of Tottenham Hotspur’s improving defence did have its downsides though: Lloris recorded save points in just four of his final 14 appearances for the Lilywhites. His popularity in 2022/23 will also be impacted by the appeal of Spurs’ wing-backs, with Matt Doherty and Ivan Perisic available for £5.0m and £5.5m respectively.

Across the 2021/22 campaign, only Man City, Liverpool, Chelsea and Spurs conceded fewer goals than Wolverhampton Wanderers, yet their expected goals conceded (xGC) tally was much worse, ranking 15th among all Premier League sides. A huge reason for that overachievement was the performances of Jose Sa (£5.0m). Only three other goalkeepers made more saves (122) than the Portuguese in 2021/22, while his +7.80 expected goals (xG) prevented figure was excellent. Wolves have a nice opening run, facing Fulham, Bournemouth and Southampton in the opening six Gameweeks, but given their worrying underlying numbers, a ‘wait and see’ approach may be best applied here, especially with Jonny (£4.5m) and Rayan Ait-Nouri (£4.5m) available for half a million less.

Aston Villa’s opening run of fixtures is certainly appealing, especially the first three matches, with 2020/21 FPL hero Emiliano Martinez (£5.0m) a secure route into their backline. Last season was an underwhelming one for the Argentine, as he managed 11 clean sheets and 129 FPL points, but there was improvement following the appointment of Steven Gerrard. Diego Carlos (£5.0m) and Boubacar Kamara (£5.0m) have since arrived this summer, strengthening Villa’s spine, as they look to push up the table. However, like Spurs, it’s hard to look past their full-backs – Matthew Cash (£5.0m) and Lucas Digne (£5.0m) – as the best options, given their attacking threat.

Leicester City’s defensive stability in 2021/22 wasn’t anything to shout about, as they struggled to cope with a busy schedule. Now, free of any European distractions, Kasper Schmeichel (£5.0m) could become an option between the sticks once the Foxes’ fixtures improve. The same of which can be said for Nick Pope (£5.0m), who suffered relegation from the Premier League with Burnley last season, but has since moved to Newcastle United, where he is now set to replace Martin Dubravka (£4.5m) as Eddie Howe’s number one. With another solid summer signing in the form of Dutch defender Sven Botman (£4.5m) in line to lead the defence in front of him, Pope could come onto the FPL radar in Gameweek 6, when many managers will be deploying their first Wildcard.

Elsewhere, Manchester United and West Ham United’s opening six fixtures suggest David de Gea (£5.0m) and Lukasz Fabianski (£5.0m) won’t receive too much attention, with their FPL ownerships currently sitting at 5.4% and 1.1% respectively.

Where I'm at currently. Haaland + Jesus the two I'm most worried about

    Raya
    TAA - Robertson - Cancelo - James
    Salah - Saka - Martinelli - Neto
    Kane - Toney

    4 - Neco - Andreas - Greenwood

Think Saka should be Diaz and then swap Robbo or TAA to maybe Diaz, Cash, Trippier. Toney could be good but who can you swap him for Jesus if you downgrade lov defence to Cash or trippier

      Looks good Klopptimus.

But I’m not sure on Toney, with Eriksen out his underlying stats were much worse. If you can jump to Jesus I think it’s worth it

And I’m not sure on Martinelli’s minutes either - will he start?

i think you take too much risk with Mahrez right from the start
also Chilwell is an injury waiting to happen and there's a chance that Jesus needs time to adapt with Arsenal, also last year, Arsenal only regain their form after 5-6 GWs so not sure about the whole thing

I think I'll drop Kane for Wilson and upgrade Mahrez and bench

Not sure why I keep seeing people saying Chilwell is injury prone. He had one very bad injury last season but had a good record up to that. How is a player that was constantly in and out of the side with injuries and which the manager said can't play at RB every week due to fitness issues better?

            • 7 Years

that's because he's proven it with many seasons

the worst injury is definitely last year but the year before that he missed about 11 games, during his days with Leicester, i remember he's only fit 1 season, the rest is between 10-15 games out

and he's not getting younger, i mean at his price point, i believe James is the better choice and 3 years younger, unless you're really looking for differential.

      Looks good! Template though

Also think Digne’s underlying numbers are better than Cash’s, could be worth a look. Or Trippier?

Bowen on the pricey side for me, plus WH tough fixtures first up - could get Mahrez or Maddison and save 0.5 to bump Raya to Mendy or Robbo to TAA

      1. Probably not to start, but if ETH gets a nice counter-attacking style to thrive he could definitely make his way onto my radar

I like it, but thin in midfield. Could you downgrade Perisic to a £4 mill defender and upgrade Martinelli to an 8 mill mid like Diaz, Mahrez, Madders. Not sure on perisic minutes - check his history with Conte

    3. DAZZ
      • 9 Years

I understand it’s template. And for good reason, but personally looking at your midfield. Martinelli Neto and 4.5 & 4.5 is asking for trouble. Martinelli and Neto aren’t necessarily guaranteed starts. If they rotate you’re in bother. I think you need atleast 1 8.0 MF, Saka/Foden/LDiaz/Mount.

  7. DAZZ

    Sanchez
    TAA James Cancelo Tomyasu
    Foden Saka LDiaz Neto
    Haaland Kane
    (Steele, NWilliams, Peireira, Archer)

This is a No Salah draft i like. Gives the option to rotate between Neco Williams and Neto based on fixtures, also covers the Arsenal attack. Kane down to a 6.5 forward like Solanke, Mitro, Awiyoni ect allows the l.Diaz > Salah if things look dodgy and Salah blows up.

If we can assume par for Trent (across the season) is around 200, and for Robbo 180, I think there's a good chance you can gain more than 0.5pts per GW by upgrading Tomiyasu to someone like Doherty/Trippier with their attacking threat

That said, I am actually a Tomiyasu owner. First bench - and for that spot I'd rather have someone who gets 2, 6, 2, 6, 6, 2, 6 etc rather than someone with a higher ceiling but more inconsistent

In terms of value (points per million) Salah will rank around 5th or 6th from all the Liverpool assets. TAA, Robbo, Alisson, Diaz, VVD all likely to offer better value. As you can only have 3 players from Liverpool I want the best value ones. There are equally good captain options for £1.5m less in Haaland and Kane.

Exactly this. Whoever scores the most points for the season you take at any price. Brave man to bet against Salah with someone else

Are you going to captain Salah for all 38 GWs?
Rotating captaincy is better a option than perma-captaining Salah.
            Examples.. Kane is better captain pick for GWs 3, 6, 8, 10 + 11.
Haaland has great opening fixtures GWs 2, 4 + 5.
GW 7 is the only early fixture when Salah is clearly the best captain (City v Spurs).

Before I comment I'll say that Salah is not in my provisional team, so I'm playing devil's advocate. However, look at the first 7 or 8 fixtures for picking the captaincy. Many teams on here, but not all, have both Salah and Haaland. The don't alternate in captaincy at all well, but Son does with both of them. That's why I will likely be starting with Son + (Salah or Haaland). The rest will be mid ranger or smaller fry.

    Raya
    TAA Cancelo Tierney (Willams, 4m)
    Salah KDB J.Sancho Martinelli (4.5m)
    Jesus Toney Solanke

    5m+ keepers

    3 candidates for me

Alisson - only 7 points less than VVD and now a million cheaper. Last season, the best value keeper and indeed player in the game, and with a price reduction!

Ederson - only if you need 3 Liverpool slots outfield. He could score more similar to Alisson this season and is also great value.

Mendy - not yet, but if Chelsea get their centre back targets and they settle quick, he could be the man.

And I would prefer to go with one of these guys than Raya, but realistically I probably won't spare the money.

The variance in keeper value is less than in other positions. You could go Ramsdale or Raya in the first 6-8 then change it to someone like Pope for the next 8-10 and take advantage of some great fixtures with the wildcards.

Then for the 2nd half of the season you can reevaluate.

    4. WVA

Ramsdale for me, nicely priced between the 4.5's and 5.5's, save and baps magnet, good fixtures.

Ramsdale okay for the short term. The bread & butter for keepers is clean sheets. Only City and Liverpool will get close to 50% there.

I wonder between four players for 8 mln:
    A) Mason Mount
    B) Dejan Kulusevski
    C) Luis Diaz
    D) Phil Foden

My favourite is Mason Mount but Kulusevski show in previous season that he is really nice and has some free/corner kicks. Also Diaz can be really good and Foden. But I already have Salah and Haaland so I'm not sure to double attack City or Liverpool.

    1. Piggs Boson

      I think Diaz.

For me it's who you have alongside him: Mount, Foden or Jesus. Leaning towards Mount (see below)

Kulu too much of a risk for me, Conte praised Richarlison's performance on the RW in a recent friendly.

I'm going for Diaz & Mount to start I think

  26. Piggs Boson

Mount is such a boring pick but I'm finding it harder to ignore him.

He already had great numbers, but Sterling is going to create much more space for him with his chaotic pace.

11g 11a while playing in a disfunctional Chelsea attack is a decent return. And with Tuchel now buying forwards who are more suited to his system, do you think Mount can improve on that return next season?

    1. TheTinman

Is he still a boring "steady" type? Seemed more explosive last season when you put something like Norwich defence in front of him.

Yeah I think he can improve slightly, although I suspect Chelsea may continue to be a bit dysfunctional. I still want a little piece of Chelsea attack with their opening fixtures though, and Mount is easier to reach than Sterling

For me everything Chelsea related has to wait until the formation question is answered. If he goes to 4-3-3 then Mount is either the RW or AM, if he is RW then he'll have to more defensive responsibilities especially with James bombing into the box at every opportunity. Also can see Tuchel pushing Sterling up higher and having a lobsided attack favouring the left.

If he's AM then he could be pure gold as he fills the space Havertz leaves when he drifts outside and runs the channels

Just too many questions at the moment

But he's been playing on the right of a front 3 anyway in 343. If James is moved to part of a back 4, surely Mount has less defensive responsibility?

He's also so explosive. Tons of routes to points. Has 19-24 pointers in him. Worth risking it at the beginning then swapping to another 8.0 if he gets rotated.

He's one of the few players who can bury you early of he gets going, like James, all the obvious guys and leftfield picks like Maddison (imo).

What kind of defence would you prefer?

    TAA, Cancelo, James, Perisic, Williams
    or
    TAA, VVD, Cancelo, Laporte/Dias, Williams

The thing is, you don't benefit from any clean sheet points from Pool and City because everyone has Trent and Cancelo at least.
So going with a double up could give you an edge over anyone who only has only one each...

The flip side of the coin of course is, that it all depends on 2 teams and you miss out on the cs points from Chelsea, Spurs and co.
