FPL first-draft team reveals: The Kane-to-Haaland Gameweek 2 switch

With the start of the new Fantasy Premier League (FPL) season not too far away, we’re welcoming back our team of Pro Pundits and Hall of Famers for the new campaign.

We’ll be hearing from a different writer every day in the aftermath of the FPL relaunch, to get their thoughts on the pricing and to see their initial picks.

Our writers will be providing regular articles and team reveals throughout the new season, with only Premium Members able to access every single one.

Next up is FPL Family’s Sam.

Sam Pundit article 3

Sometimes in FPL you just can’t catch a break. The 2021/22 season started well enough for me but the impact of Covid-19 around Christmas massively impacted my team. Multiple Gameweeks without a full starting XI, points hits and some stubbornness on my part meant my season started to unravel.

This was capped off by some bad navigation of chips. My second Wildcard saw me swap Son Heung-min (£12.0m) for Harry Kane (£11.5m), just before Son went on his points-scoring hauls. Meanwhile, saving my Free Hit for Gameweek 38 saw my overhauled team score less than my original line-up would have done. FPL is definitely a rollercoaster at times!

Even though my season ended in freefall, that’s part of what we love about Fantasy Football. I learned a lot about my FPL management style last season and heading into the new campaign, things can only get better.

Wildcard in Gameweek 9?

The World Cup in November and December will have a big impact on the FPL season. This is why I was delighted to see that Official FPL have added an unlimited transfer window in between Gameweeks 16 and 17, when we pause for the international action in Qatar.

This unlimited transfer window will change my FPL thinking. I am normally a manager who likes to hold their first Wildcard until as late in the window as possible. However, now I will be looking to activate it earlier to ensure that I can maximise it’s full potential.

My early thought is that I will aim to play my Wildcard after Gameweek 8. Between Gameweek 8 and Gameweek 9, there will be an international break. This makes perfect sense as a Wildcard week. Obviously, this aids my FPL planning as I know I am picking a squad for the opening eight Gameweeks only.

Budget Distribution

When building my opening squad for a new season I like to keep the different price points in mind. Doing this means that I feel able to act quickly and move to the in-form players without having to disrupt the rest of my team. For example, the £8.0m midfielder bracket looks key. Having one or two £8.0m players in my opening squad means that I will be able to adjust to the others if someone is performing better.

Sam Pundit article

Arsenal and Man City both have excellent opening fixtures and therefore I like the idea of starting with Bukayo Saka (£8.0m) and Phil Foden (£8.0m). Knowing that they are easily moved to another excellent £8.0m option makes them increasingly attractive.

This is also true for the £5.5m-£6.0m defenders.

Sam Pundit article 1

I’ll be owning at least one player in this bracket in the opening weeks of the season. If they perform well then they will stay until Wildcard; if they underachieve then they are easily moved to another FPL option.

FPL team Reveal: First Draft

Sam Pundit team reveal first draft

There are so many players that I want to own ahead of Gameweek 1 but fitting them all in is difficult. My original thinking is to start with Harry Kane (£11.5m) for Gameweek 1 and then move to Erling Haaland (£11.5m) ahead of Gameweek 2. I would like to afford Son Heung-min (£12.0m), too, but finding the additional £4.0m to upgrade Foden is proving difficult.

There are some potentially good £4.0m defenders in the game. Everton‘s Nathan Patterson (£4.0m) could benefit from an injury to Seamus Coleman (£4.5m) and will be worth watching in pre-season. Neco Williams (£4.0m) could also get game-time after a loan move to Nottingham Forest.

Jack Colback (£4.5m) is a player that could potentially fill the budget midfielder spot but as is the case with the defenders, I will be keeping a close eye on pre-season form to determine who is the best option in this bracket. Andreas Pereira‘s (£4.5m) transfer to Fulham also marks him out as a leading budget midfield candidate.

Gabriel Jesus‘ (£8.0m) performance during his Arsenal debut has put him firmly on my radar too. If this continues across preseason then I will likely look to free up some additional budget to move Ivan Toney (£7.0m) to him. However, I do like the Brentford fixtures between Gameweek 1 and my likely Wildcard window.

READ MORE: Who has the best fixtures at the start of the 2022/23 FPL season?

There are a few positions and players here that would definitely change. I would like to find the extra money for Joao Cancelo (£7.0m) over Kyle Walker (£5.0m). Allan Saint-Maximin (£6.5m) could easily be Bruno Guimaraes (£6.0m), Pedro Neto (£5.5m) or a Brentford midfielder if I do go with Jesus over Toney.

There’s still a lot of tinkering to do with this team. With three weeks to go until the Gameweek 1 deadline, it will be important to keep an eye on the transfer window as well as pre-season form.

        I assumed he'd play RW, like he did for Poch, it would provide much better balance to the side.

        But it's not a popular idea on here.

          Did you watch the friendly today? You'd have notice how we dominated the game on the right side

          This how it will work I feel

          Right side dominated by Bruno, Dalot and Sancho
          Left side dominated by Eriksen, Shaw/Malacia and Rashford
          Striker Martial/CR7

      Forest fan here.

      The chances of Colback starting regularly for us are very slim. Last season he was only getting regular starts because he was filling in at LB in place of the injured Max Lowe. We have now singed Omar Richards from Bayern to play at left back, so Colback won't be first choice there.
      His natural position is in central midfield, and we're almost certainly about to sign Lewis O’Brien from Huddersfield to play there alongside Ryan Yates, pushing Colback to the bench.

      All that said, he's still valued by the manager and appreciated by the fans, so wouldn't be surprised to see him get minutes from the bench or if somebody gets injured either in midfield or at LWB. He's far from nailed-on though.

    If experts post their teams - millions of non-experts could start the season with a good team.
    People like me trying to go my own way might be behind at the start.
    Maybe experts should post bad drafts 😉 to throw off those not making the effort and just copying.

      What do we class as experts? Words seem to have less and less meaning these days.

      If you have played the game for a long period of time are you automatically an expert? If you have got a 10k rank are you an expert, those who have ranked 10,001 are not experts then is that correct?

      My feelings are that if you have won FPL, that is someone who I want to take advice from and take knowledge from and in FPL terms may consider an expert. I want to know about winners, that's why interviews and articles about winners are what I like to get into their mind and find out their thinking.

      I really do not care about anyone who puts themselves on some imaginary pedestal because of what they see as an achievement. I want winners only but unfortunately those who have won the game don't speak a lot, the winners and successful people tend to keep a low profile.

        I would argue that those towards the summit of the hall of fame are better players than past winners. I love hearing from those players the most. Anything from Borges is gold.

        I respect those youtubers and TV show panalists for their presentation and communication skills, it's not an easy thing to talk on camera, but there are few with any valuable substance.

        The Wire and Blackbox often has good data analysis and people with great FPL histories, but quality channels like those are rare, a drop in an ocean of crap.

      i listen/watch a fair bit of content. not a lot of it religiously but i think i have a decent pulse on how folks talk about the game.

      i don't think many people present themselves as experts. most are super passionate about FPL and love talking about it.
      i really don't get the hate towards most people (or maybe i'm not seeing the folks claiming they're experts).

      this is a hobby for many of us, and for a few people they've found a way to share their hobby and passion with others.

      why can't people just let other people enjoy their hobby?

      Chilwell's PPG until he got injured was insane, close to 9 i think.
      James is more injury prone than Chilwell, but they both have very high ceiling.

          Personally I would - I think Jesus is under priced and could be a risk worth taking - see my team below - I've gone heavier upfront this season than ever before, but we in effect have an extra wildcard so it can be played early if necessary to rectify mistakes / jump on players preforming well

      Like this team.

      Few things to consider:
      1) Manchester City has favorable opening fixtures, you may want to have one attacking player from their team. Someone who is less prone to Pep's rotation.

      2) Meslier has more saves per game than any other GKP. However, his team also concedes a lot more than the team of his competitors. In my calculation, he loses more points from goals conceded (-1 for every 2 goals) than the points he gains from saves (+1 for every 3 saves) in comparison to Raya.

      3) Rotation risk of Kulusevski (I am not sure about this, Spurs fans will be able to tell better).

      4) Will Bailey start for Villa?

      5) Hope you considered James and Chilwell, before deciding one over the other. I am still confused who to pick. Could you help me by sharing your thoughts?

    I'm finding the pricing actually harder this year than in previous ones - too many choices

    So I think for the 1st time ever I'm asking for a RMT - I understand it's not template but would really appreciate any comments / thoughts

    4.5 and 4.0 still undecided
    TAA Cancelo Chilwell
    Sterling Diaz Martinelli Coutinho
    Kane, Jusus Toney

    Tomiyasu Jonny Andreas

          Dear God no. Looks tempting but Salah will shine this year. New contract and Egyptian qualification behind him I'd hate to go without him. An Fpl machine

      I like that you have funds well distributed all over the pitch.

      My opinion is to have only one premium player for captaincy (with double points) to justify their price value. If not captained, there will always be more points / £ if you distribute the £ over all players.

      Did you consider downgrading Toney and upgrading one of your defenders? Depending on the defender you choose, that may give you more points but with a downside of a non-playing bench fodder (4.5m forward).

    Does anyone have an idea on where I can find an extra .5 for this team? Currently at 100.5

    Meslier (4.0)
    TAA-Cancelo-James-Perisic (Neco)
    Salah-Foden-Dias-Mount-Maddison
    Jesus (4.5, 4.5)

    TAA -> Robbo
    Cancel -> Laporte
    Mount/Maddison-> Andreas + Callum Wilson
    Jesus -> Jime/Wilson?

    I really want the above team, so close!

      I’d downgrade Perisic to Digne/Cash for your .5

        Kane usually starts slow. Haaland I don't think will play as many minutes initially as people think, plus he is made of glass. I'd go KDB over either of them.

            Asking for me- Is Trippier's place guarenteed? I'm not sure but I think Targett played a few games. Also between Trip and Gabriel who would you pick for the first 8 GW's ?

              Secure starter yeah. Trippier RB, Targett LB.

              I'm going for Trippier with Tomiyasu 1st bench to cover the City & Liverpool games. Should have some hauls in him being on set pieces. Gabriel also has a really high upside for a CB though - big threat from set pieces & racks up the bonus pts. Both great picks imo - maybe depends on who else you have, e.g. with Ramsdale GK I might be more inclined to Trippier

                    Zinchenko would probably be cover for Tierney or play a central midfield role like for Ukraine. Tomiyasu seemed to nail down RB last year, Cedric his deputy

                Thanks! Yeah I wasn't too happy about doubling up on Arsenal Def, I might choose Trip then. What do you think about the new CB Botman. He's cheaper but his past stats show that he doesn't get any goals or assists.

                  I stay away from CBs in general, especially ones not on City/Liverpool just because they are so CS dependent. Will Newcastle realistically keep more than 10 CS?

              Trippier and Targett play on opposite sides and both seem nailed. Newcastle won't bench Trippier just from a PR standpoint. But he is also very injury prone.

      I'd do Mount/Maddison > Coutinho and bank the 0.5

      I get the desire for 4x 8.0mids....but maybe it's overkill.
      That 0.5 lets you get to Bowen from one of them too.

      I'd not pick Perisic myself...he's not even fit/fully training.
      But that's a different conversation.

        I've had Robbo + Andreas in this format and it looks really good.

              In my opinion, Diaz will be further down the pecking order of £8.0m mids. His only source of points will be non-penalty goals and assists. Admittedly, he will get a lot of them. But, Mount will get more minutes and he is on set-piece duties. Saka is also on penalties and will get more assists than last season with Jesus at the receiving end of many of those crosses. Maddison does not need anything special to score more points than Diaz, he just has to continue the same form as we saw in the last of of the season.

              So, my options will be Mount, Saka, Maddison, Jesus, Diaz, Foden, Mahrez -- in that order. However, I have no idea where to place Kulusevski in that list.

              (Also, I will buy any of the defenders at £7.0m and above before buying Mount)

                You could be right. But I'm thinking of Diaz as a cut price Mane, given he's going to occupy the left spot. If Mane had been 8.0, he'd have been essential. I'm willing to be wrong on this though, as I would like Robertson in my team.

                I have Jesus already in my team, and I think one Arsenal attacking asset is enough, so I personally haven't given Saka much thought. But you're probably right, he's going to likely have a better season than last season, and that was a good one.

        1. Dias 2. Mount 3. Maddison 4. Foden 5. Saka 6. Mahrez

        With Jota hurt, Dias is nailed.

        I think Maddison will be playing with a fire under his belt due to the disrespect England national team keep showing him. Plus Leicester do not have any European play this season.

        Mount is a predicament because last year he had 4 goals and 2 assists against Norwich.... take those 2 games away and he scored 37 less fpl points. But he also only played 2350 minutes.

      Last year my girlfriend decided to play FPL for the first time as she is a Brentford fan and we thought it would be fun. She did unfathomably well (top 10k and was neck and neck with Fabio in the Brentford league until the very end). I didn’t really help her that much.

      It turns out she would listen to podcasts for ideas and said that Sam was the person she enjoyed listening to the most among the many male voices.

      So to Sam I say keep up the good work and ignore the insecure haters! This team isn’t really inspiring me but having greater diversity of voices in FPL can only be a good thing. Hopefully more women can play and enjoy football and FPL than ever before.

        Nah - start with Son.
        If Sterling looks good it's an easy move later.

        Chelsea could be weird to start with the new defenders and Sterling I think.
        Maybe Mount or Havertz end up getting all the points?

        I don't think any specific 8m mid is a must have, but having at least 1 is essential IMO, could start with 2. There are great options at that price point. To start I would say Diaz, Foden, Saka are the best options. Only reason I wouldn't go Diaz is if I double up on Trent and Robbo.

      Need to save a million and I feel like the main two options for me are;

      1. TAA -> VVD
      2. Cancelo -> Dias/Laporte

      There was some good analysis on VVD only being marginally behind TAA across the last 3/4 seasons.

      Which would you go for?

        Wouldn't want to do either

        I wouldn't even consider 1. I don't have a big issue with 2 - would go Laporte between the two, slightly more goal threat.
