FPL

The best premium FPL defenders for 2022/23

Premium defenders come under the spotlight as we continue to examine the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) price list.

There are nine defenders currently priced up at £6.0m or above and we’ll weigh up the pros and cons of each of them in this article.

With unlimited transfers allowed during the World Cup downtime and a Wildcard to use before then, we’re mostly focusing on Gameweeks 1-8 in this series.

Our look at budget defenders in the £4.0m-£4.5m bracket will follow soon.

Opta stats on the players featured in these articles are available in our Premium Members Area, where you can now get a full year’s subscription for just £2.49 a month.

TRENT ALEXANDER-ARNOLD/ANDREW ROBERTSON

The best mid-price and premium FPL goalkeepers for 2022/23

Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m) was the top-scoring FPL defender in 2021/22, with his total of 208 points placing him third in the overall rankings.

The right-back produced 14 attacking returns, yet still ended the campaign with a negative expected goal involvement (xGI) delta (-1.91), while 32 bonus points was at least five more than any other FPL defender.

Given his all-round points potential, it still feels like Alexander-Arnold is under-priced, even at £7.5m.

As for fellow full-back Andrew Robertson (£7.0m), his consistency from Gameweek 13 onwards in 2021/22 was simply outstanding.

In that time, the 28-year-old racked up 27 returns (be it goals, assists or clean sheets) in 21 starts, blanking in just three of those outings, whilst also averaging a whopping 7.6 points per match.

Based on this year’s prices and last year’s points, Robertson is the best-value FPL player for value (points per million per game) of those assets with more than 2,000 minutes to their names.

It’s expensive, but given the duo’s output at both ends of the pitch, there is a compelling case to double-up on Liverpool’s full-backs from the off.

VIRGIL VAN DIJK/JOEL MATIP

While centre-back pairing Virgil van Dijk (£6.5m) and Joel Matip (£6.0m) don’t carry the same explosive potential as the Liverpool full-backs, both performed admirably in 2021/22 and are cheaper – although perhaps crucially not as much as they could have been, with Alexander-Arnold not getting the expected rise to £8.0m+.

Van Dijk produced three goals – level with Robertson and one more than Alexander-Arnold – three assists and 13 bonus points in 34 starts, averaging 5.4 points per match, a total that ranked 11th among all defenders.

Matip, meanwhile, was FPL’s best-value player based on points per million. However, it remains to be seen if he will remain the first choice in the Premier League, with Ibrahima Konate (£5.0m) often preferred in Europe last season.

If reliability of starts is no longer guaranteed, then Matip isn’t worth the £6.0m considering that other potential rotation risks like Chelsea’s wing-backs offer much more attacking threat when they do make it onto the pitch.

JOAO CANCELO/AYMERIC LAPORTE/RUBEN DIAS

The best mid-price and premium FPL goalkeepers for 2022/23 1

Joao Cancelo (£7.0m) finished second among FPL defenders for points in 2021/22, hitting 201.

As a result, he is one of the most expensive defenders in FPL this year, but should still be worth it.

The Portuguese’ total of 11 assists equalled Robertson’s tally and was only one short of what Alexander-Arnold managed last season, while his playmaking abilities helped him rack up 27 bonus points.

Shooting is a big talking point with Cancelo. He attempted 81 shots last season, at least 30 more than any other FPL defender, but only found the net once, with the majority of his efforts arriving from range. However, it was a different story in Europe, with two goals in nine Champions League outings, which does suggest with a bit more luck, we could see one or two more fly in next season.

The wayward shooting meant that Cancelo was the biggest ‘underachiever’ among defenders for xGI in 2022/23 (a delta of -3.70), something that he’d surely struggle to emulate this season given the quality of player and teammate.

As it stands, there doesn’t seem to be too much competition for Cancelo’s starting spot, either, with Oleksandar Zinchenko (£5.0m) recently linked with a move to Arsenal. Should Manchester City sign Marc Cucurella (£5.0m) from Brighton and Hove Albion, as they have been tipped to do, Cancelo may see his game-time slightly reduced, although his versatility could also see him take up a regular role on the right-flank instead.

Aymeric Laporte (£6.0m) and Ruben Dias (£6.0m), meanwhile, are slightly less glamorous options, but shouldn’t be written off.

In fact, when applying the new 2022/23 FPL prices, their points per million (PPM) per game sits at 0.81, just ahead of Cancelo’s 0.80 total.

Laporte actually registered four goals last season, all of which arrived from set-piece situations, and was a secure starter at the back, starting 33 Premier League matches.

Dias racked up seven attacking returns in 27 starts last term but his spot was slightly less secure.

Sussing out who the ‘mainstay’ is this season (and there is generally one a year, with Laporte in 2021/22, Dias in 2020/21 and Nicolas Otamendi in the past) will be key, as the central bedrock will be a popular City double-up with Cancelo – or maybe even an alternative to the full-back, given what we discussed above about value.

PlayerStartsGoals (xG)Assists (xA)Clean sheetsBonusPoints per start

REECE JAMES/BEN CHILWELL

The best mid-price and premium FPL goalkeepers for 2022/23 4

Reece James (£6.0m) and Ben Chilwell (£6.0m) were fundamental to Chelsea’s attacking approach when fit last season.

Now, if Thomas Tuchel continues using wing-backs, they could turn out to be a pair of underpriced gems.

James’ season may have been interrupted by injury, but he showcased his attacking instincts across his 22 Premier League starts, producing five goals, nine assists and 26 bonus, averaging 6.3 points per start.

In fact, he produced 18+ points on three occasions last season, a feat Alexander-Arnold failed to achieve once.

Chilwell made only six starts and one substitute appearance in an injury-ravaged 2021/22, but generally posed the bigger goal threat under Tuchel, while James bossed the underlying creative stats.

Above: James v Chilwell 2021/22 (averages per appearance)

READ MORE: Chilwell v James: Who is the best Chelsea defender in FPL?

We have occasionally seen James at centre-half, which does dent his attacking potential, although the imminent signing Kalidou Koulibaly suggests he’ll be taking up a wing-back role, at least to start the season.

As for Chelsea, they ranked third for goals conceded, clean sheets and expected goals conceded (xGC) last season, and are once again expected to be one of the best defences in the division, despite the loss of the influential Antonio Rudiger.

Notably, Tuchel’s side face only two of last season’s top six in their first 12 fixtures, hosting Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool in Gameweek 2 and 8 respectively.

Sanchez - Brighton good defensively, plus backup is 4m.
Leeds are awful, concede loads of goals, Brentford keeper might have a battle to keep his no1 spot with another 4.5 signing from Italy.

Other Sanchez alternative is who ever starts for Palace.

It looks good but my strategy is not to have to great players in same position from same team, i.e Salah & Diaz. I would pick Salah and an £8.M from another team. I am an LFC fan, but if they have a a 1-0 win, both Salah and Diaz will not return 20 points, if you get my drift?

    Two questions, if I may:

Cash or Trippier—and why? I'm on Trippier, for I trust Newcastle more throughout the season and I don't like to plan transfers, but I'm not that convinced anyway.

Also, Henderson + Reece James or 5.0 keeper + Perisic?

Agree with dropping Leno for a 4.0 but I don't think there are any reasonable mids under 4.5 and don't see much value in any forwards outside of Kane; Haaland and Nunez unproven in this league, Ronaldo and Vardy too old. Backing Toney to have similar haul to Jesus at 1.0 cheaper and I can rotate Benharama and B.Guimaraes?

There is a real gap in quality from 5.5 to 6.5. Whoever you pick in that range is going to be punt central. When you start backing players like Sancho at 7.5 or Martial at 7 there are far better options within 0.5 of that price.

Rashford is an exciting punt when you compare him to the likes of Neto, Benrahma, Harrison, Guimares, Trossard etc.

The approach has well and truly changed.

I've just watched Spurs vs Sevilla, I've also seen highlights of the Spurs vs K-League Game + I've seen two interviews with Harry Kane, and the way he speaks well, put it this way he's now 100% in my team.

    The question is
    A) Threemium
    B) Kane and Salah - with Mahrez as the 8m instead of Diaz.
    C) Kane and Haaland - with TAA, Robbo and Diaz as Salah cover
    D) Haaland and Salah - which i was originally on but now looks increasingly unlikely

The standout from the pricing to me was the absolutely stacked 8-9 m attacker and 6-7.5m defender pools. Which makes threemium a terrible idea. I mean it is always a bad strategy to start with. This especially

Stacking up on premium defenders and £8m midfields makes it difficult to move to the real premiums. This year, I think Kane + Martinelli can easily outscore Jesus + Mount, for example.

I’m on B, with Foden but May end up switching to Mahrez. Can easily move Kane to Haaland if needed

I am on C, so biased opinion.

Premium players are valuable for captaincies. Cheaper players generally do not provide as much points per million as the premium captains. e.g., you will get 500 points for £13.0m spent on Salah, which is 38.5 points per £1m.

You can captain only one player. If you have Salah and you captain him, then having any other premium player is a waste of money -- it will be difficult to maximize the total points for every £1m spent. Not captaining Salah will also be a waste of £13.0m, as you can get better points per £1m from other players.

Therefore, the best option is to get one premium player (whoever you think scores the highest - I think Haaland), and then maximize your points per £1m with players in the range of £8-10m. However, I do not have the balls to do so.

The second best option is to have 2 premiums. If I include Salah in that combination, then I can not captain the second premium player if I think about maximizing points per £1m (which I do a lot). A compromise is to get Haaland and Kane. When not captaining, either will provide more value per £1m than Salah. Second reason, Liverpool has other players who are extremely valuable (e.g. Trent, Robertson, Alisson, Diaz, Carvalho?) while other assets at Spurs are not so enticing. With Pep's rotation at Manchester, where few midfielders are regular starters except KdB.

Great reply. Do you work out points per million out of your whole squad and pick players purely on that? Where does KDB come into your thinking?

Keep forgetting Carvalho has signed for pool, thats a danger to Diaz's minutes for sure

Difficult to answer particularly for KdB, depends on his points per game. You choose him only if he has the highest points per game and you captain him. Price doesn't matter.

Here's a brief attempt to answer why I think so:

Take my words with a grain of salt, I haven't tried this before. I am just having a fun project to figure out the points per £1m for the whole team. It is not easy, because there are several constraints, including the total budget, substitutes and general uncertainties. There are no easy formulations, as most of these attempts use sub-optimal approximations such as VORP theory (https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2015/08/04/player-value-revisited/).

A slightly better way (still suboptimal) would be to maximize the total points per game (ppg) with two constraints: (1) total budget (tolerance of £98.5m - £99.5m) and (2) players will randomly miss some games, and substitutes will come into play. However, the total number of combinations is intractable -- so I have to do a random search (think of stochastic gradient descent). It is a black box, which just gives me the best result.

But, I don't know the ppg of each player and I don't have the fixture difficulty included in the simulations. Results vary wildly with different ppg. But all simulations give one common result -- choose a single premium (one with the highest ppg in the game, price doesn't matter) and other players in the range of £8-10m.

When I restrict it to two premiums and choose captain randomly, I find some interesting results. Salah doesn't feature anymore. Neither does KdB or Son, unless they have astronomically high points per game. But, its always Kane and Haaland. Surprise! I have checked it with a wide range of ppg for Kane, Haaland, Salah, KdB, Son. Of course, it depends on the difference of ppg between these players, which we don't know before the start of the game. I assumed they will be in the range of 6.5 - 7.5. If this assumption fails, then the results are invalid.

I almost feel inadequate to even reply to you haha.

I get what you're saying even though my IQ is quite obviously 10x's less than yours...my only worry with Haaland is his injuries he picks up - it works out that hes injured 20% of a season - and the premierleague is alot more physical, which is why i think he will feature highly in the old favourite - pep roulette.

Why im leaning towards KDB and having a Mahrez in there too.

Injuries are definitely worrying, so is Champions League football and Pep roulette.

KdB / Salah are exceptional players with lots of goals and assists, but Haaland is a generational talent. I rate him as high as Ronaldo, Messi, Mbappe. We haven't seen a player like him in the last two decades of the PL (may be young Ronaldo at United). With a bit of luck, I am expecting him to break the goal-scoring record of the PL. Bold wishes! I know he is unproven and haven't played a minute in the PL but this is just an opinion, so please be kind with this. 🙂

You'll appreciate this... a bunch of us used to play a sub 9m league. Standard fpl with one added rule, you arent allowed any player that costs 9m or more. It was eye opening. Plenty of us did very well over the season a fair few even outscored their main fpl team. End up with a stacked squad of 15 points machines. Sub 9 team would consistently score well week in week out. Way less 2 pointers than regular team. Captaincy was a nightmare. Gained a lot of points across team and lost a lot of points via captaincy. Whenever the popular captain of the week blanked you'd get big green arrow. When popular captain hauls bug red arrow. But over the course of the season it balancec out and the sub 9s were surprisingly competitive.

Made me realise if it werent for captaincy even salah the best player in the game would be a terrible pick at 13m.

Yes, I do appreciate it! Combine that sub-9.0m team with a solid captain and you have got yourself a terrific team. Problem is to figure out the captain. Salah is the most consistent one, but I think Haaland will outscore him this season. But, that's a gamble, which brings me to the double premium.

Exactly. That was my takeaway realising that the ideal fpl team will often have only one big hitter. Its counter intuitive, yes kane, son, salah, kdb, haaland will score a shed load of points and also they can be bad picks while scoring lots of points

Spot on. If it werent for captaincy salah at 13m would be straight up a terrible pick. One premium at a time will allow to maximise points in team overall but you wanna be very sure they are an excellent captain. Two premiums gives increased captaincy options and the ability to switch without making transfers, at the expense of some overall team points. 3 premiums at this stage of the season makes no sense

Based on your thought process, that I kind of agree with, what do you think of this? Sucks not having Son tho, could make Sterling into him tho if I cheapen my defence.

        Alison
        Trent - Robbo - Cancelo - Trippier - Chilwell
        Sterling - Coutinho - Maddison
        (H)aaland - Jesus

Great team, but it is somewhere in between 1 premium and 2 premiums. I will choose one or the other and stick to it. For example, if Mount scores similar to Sterling or slightly less, Mount will have more value. I don't have the guts to go with 1 premium, but if I did, I would have had the following team for example:

          Ederson
          Trent, Robbo, James, Chilwell, Cancelo
          Mount, Foden / Mahrez, Diaz
          Kane (c), Jesus

No gambles, solid choices everywhere, all from top 6 teams. But, I am too scared to do that.

I don't think its a bad strat and mathematically true. I also BB in GW1 quite often also, but don't think I will this year.
I probably will go for a value approach like this, but maybe a different structure tho.

B, I think Kane is underpriced given Son’s last seasons heroics point wise. Haaland might take a while to adjust, whereas Spurs are gonna come out firing now that Conte is given a full preseason w the squad. And then the possibility of Mahrez seeing more/regular game time, which right now feels like the best punty and explosive way to City’s attack. Plus Robertson instead of Dias cause if Robertson picks up from where he left he’s gonna make no owners look silly. Still plenty of time before GW1 though 🙂

Tinkering. Please evaluate these combinations at £18.5m:

    A. Raya/Sanchez -- Cancelo -- Coutinho
    B. Ederson -- Trippier -- Mount

Are these just sideways or is there some potential upside for any one of them? B allows a £8.0m spot in the midfield.

Personally think Cancelo is the best option in both and I prefer a 4.5 keeper strategy to a more expensive one. Don't see a huge gap between Coutinho and Mount but do think having the 8.0 mid is better because of all the options at that price point. It's close either way, but Cancelo is the big name I wouldn't want out of my team out of both options

Thanks, makes a lot of sense. I would definitely want Cancelo. But, his price is a little awkward. Robertson is better at £7.0m, while James and Chilwell both provide better value at £6.0m.

The £8.0m slot is important. Already have Diaz, so this will be my second £8.0m slot. Question is, which is more important: second £8.0m slot or Cancelo?

I am thinking Trippier (more clean sheets this season) can match the points of Cancelo. In that case (which is a big IF), Sanchez / Diaz will outscore Mendy / Aaronson. The point excess of Mendy over Sanchez will be max 20-30 points over the season, while Diaz has a higher upside potential over Aaronson.

To what end though? So the rest of your squad scores pittance?

Eh? It's to maximise points from the rest of your squad

What do the guys think of Palinha of Fulham? His last season was good by all accounts.

Yeah. Maybe 5 mil too high.

        Fourmium:

        Mendy Steele
        Walker Tomiyasu Lamptey Justin Williams
        Salah Son Martinelli Neto Andreas
        Kane Haaland Greenwood

Not in love. Walker might have a Cucarella spanner. No 8 mil mids which could limit you. Martinelli game time. justin wait and see. No big hitters at the back.

Not as bad as expected to be fair. Just don’t see the point in so many premiums when you can only captain one of them

        Team A or Team B?

        A

        Raya (4.0)

        TAA Cancelo James Trippier Cash

Son (c) Kulu Mount Saka Benharama

        Nunez (Undav, 4.5)

        B

        Allisson (4.0)

        Chilwell James TAA Cancelo Trippier

        Son(c) Kulu Mount Saka (Benharama)

        Toney (Undav, 4.5)

I'm leaning towards A as if Nunez flops I can easily transfer down to Toney and upgrade elsewhere, if he is a success then he's way better value than other premium strikers.

        Inspired by European Bob's fourmium

        Meslier

        VVD - Tomiyasu - Jonny - Justin

        Salah - Diaz - Sterling - DaSilva

        Kane - Haaland

        (4.0 - N.Williams - Andreas - Archer)

Defence is a bit poor but could definitely work out in the short term if you’re wildcarding early

If I was tempted to drop the threemium it would be for pretty much this exact team

Side note. Do people seriously expect Cancelo to keep them sort of returns up for another season? I'm not sure whether it was a freak season, it's not like he's done it season after season, we are all shoving him in our teams off the back of last season and last season alone?

I'm probably not going with him, think he's a bit pricey at £7m. That being said he did underperform his xG last year

He underpeformed his xG by quite the margin. Expecting big things from him.

I'm hoping he moves to RB. He can bomb forward and whip in crosses for Haaland.

I think that's around his ceiling but can go close again sure. I think playing left back is key for him to hit those heights
