The best premium FPL defenders for 2022/23

Premium defenders come under the spotlight as we continue to examine the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) price list.

There are nine defenders currently priced up at £6.0m or above and we’ll weigh up the pros and cons of each of them in this article.

With unlimited transfers allowed during the World Cup downtime and a Wildcard to use before then, we’re mostly focusing on Gameweeks 1-8 in this series.

Our look at budget defenders in the £4.0m-£4.5m bracket will follow soon.

Opta stats on the players featured in these articles are available in our Premium Members Area, where you can now get a full year’s subscription for just £2.49 a month.

TRENT ALEXANDER-ARNOLD/ANDREW ROBERTSON

The best mid-price and premium FPL goalkeepers for 2022/23

Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m) was the top-scoring FPL defender in 2021/22, with his total of 208 points placing him third in the overall rankings.

The right-back produced 14 attacking returns, yet still ended the campaign with a negative expected goal involvement (xGI) delta (-1.91), while 32 bonus points was at least five more than any other FPL defender.

Given his all-round points potential, it still feels like Alexander-Arnold is under-priced, even at £7.5m.

As for fellow full-back Andrew Robertson (£7.0m), his consistency from Gameweek 13 onwards in 2021/22 was simply outstanding.

In that time, the 28-year-old racked up 27 returns (be it goals, assists or clean sheets) in 21 starts, blanking in just three of those outings, whilst also averaging a whopping 7.6 points per match.

Based on this year’s prices and last year’s points, Robertson is the best-value FPL player for value (points per million per game) of those assets with more than 2,000 minutes to their names.

It’s expensive, but given the duo’s output at both ends of the pitch, there is a compelling case to double-up on Liverpool’s full-backs from the off.

VIRGIL VAN DIJK/JOEL MATIP

While centre-back pairing Virgil van Dijk (£6.5m) and Joel Matip (£6.0m) don’t carry the same explosive potential as the Liverpool full-backs, both performed admirably in 2021/22 and are cheaper – although perhaps crucially not as much as they could have been, with Alexander-Arnold not getting the expected rise to £8.0m+.

Van Dijk produced three goals – level with Robertson and one more than Alexander-Arnold – three assists and 13 bonus points in 34 starts, averaging 5.4 points per match, a total that ranked 11th among all defenders.

Matip, meanwhile, was FPL’s best-value player based on points per million. However, it remains to be seen if he will remain the first choice in the Premier League, with Ibrahima Konate (£5.0m) often preferred in Europe last season.

If reliability of starts is no longer guaranteed, then Matip isn’t worth the £6.0m considering that other potential rotation risks like Chelsea’s wing-backs offer much more attacking threat when they do make it onto the pitch.

JOAO CANCELO/AYMERIC LAPORTE/RUBEN DIAS

The best mid-price and premium FPL goalkeepers for 2022/23 1

Joao Cancelo (£7.0m) finished second among FPL defenders for points in 2021/22, hitting 201.

As a result, he is one of the most expensive defenders in FPL this year, but should still be worth it.

The Portuguese’ total of 11 assists equalled Robertson’s tally and was only one short of what Alexander-Arnold managed last season, while his playmaking abilities helped him rack up 27 bonus points.

Shooting is a big talking point with Cancelo. He attempted 81 shots last season, at least 30 more than any other FPL defender, but only found the net once, with the majority of his efforts arriving from range. However, it was a different story in Europe, with two goals in nine Champions League outings, which does suggest with a bit more luck, we could see one or two more fly in next season.

The wayward shooting meant that Cancelo was the biggest ‘underachiever’ among defenders for xGI in 2022/23 (a delta of -3.70), something that he’d surely struggle to emulate this season given the quality of player and teammate.

As it stands, there doesn’t seem to be too much competition for Cancelo’s starting spot, either, with Oleksandar Zinchenko (£5.0m) recently linked with a move to Arsenal. Should Manchester City sign Marc Cucurella (£5.0m) from Brighton and Hove Albion, as they have been tipped to do, Cancelo may see his game-time slightly reduced, although his versatility could also see him take up a regular role on the right-flank instead.

Aymeric Laporte (£6.0m) and Ruben Dias (£6.0m), meanwhile, are slightly less glamorous options, but shouldn’t be written off.

In fact, when applying the new 2022/23 FPL prices, their points per million (PPM) per game sits at 0.81, just ahead of Cancelo’s 0.80 total.

Laporte actually registered four goals last season, all of which arrived from set-piece situations, and was a secure starter at the back, starting 33 Premier League matches.

Dias racked up seven attacking returns in 27 starts last term but his spot was slightly less secure.

Sussing out who the ‘mainstay’ is this season (and there is generally one a year, with Laporte in 2021/22, Dias in 2020/21 and Nicolas Otamendi in the past) will be key, as the central bedrock will be a popular City double-up with Cancelo – or maybe even an alternative to the full-back, given what we discussed above about value.

CANCELO/DIAS/LAPORTE COMPARED 2021/22
PlayerStartsGoals (xG)Assists (xA)Clean sheetsBonusPoints per start
Cancelo361 (5.12)11 (6.58)19275.6

REECE JAMES/BEN CHILWELL

The best mid-price and premium FPL goalkeepers for 2022/23 4

Reece James (£6.0m) and Ben Chilwell (£6.0m) were fundamental to Chelsea’s attacking approach when fit last season.

Now, if Thomas Tuchel continues using wing-backs, they could turn out to be a pair of underpriced gems.

James’ season may have been interrupted by injury, but he showcased his attacking instincts across his 22 Premier League starts, producing five goals, nine assists and 26 bonus, averaging 6.3 points per start.

In fact, he produced 18+ points on three occasions last season, a feat Alexander-Arnold failed to achieve once.

Chilwell made only six starts and one substitute appearance in an injury-ravaged 2021/22, but generally posed the bigger goal threat under Tuchel, while James bossed the underlying creative stats.

Above: James v Chilwell 2021/22 (averages per appearance)

READ MORE: Chilwell v James: Who is the best Chelsea defender in FPL?

We have occasionally seen James at centre-half, which does dent his attacking potential, although the imminent signing Kalidou Koulibaly suggests he’ll be taking up a wing-back role, at least to start the season.

As for Chelsea, they ranked third for goals conceded, clean sheets and expected goals conceded (xGC) last season, and are once again expected to be one of the best defences in the division, despite the loss of the influential Antonio Rudiger.

Notably, Tuchel’s side face only two of last season’s top six in their first 12 fixtures, hosting Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool in Gameweek 2 and 8 respectively.

I like Foden a lot, but for my team it's Foden or Mount (both 8).
I just think Mount's going to get more mins and more set pieces.

            From MEN:

Those players will instead head off to train with the Under-23s before linking back up with the first team squad in the week leading up to the Community Shield against Liverpool at the end of July.

Foden, Stones and Gundogan haven't been allowed into the US because they have not met the 'entry requirements'.

While it is not confirmed, the most likely reason they have been denied entry is because they are not fully vaccinated against Covid.

One more point re premiums. Optimum strategy is very different with 100m budget and 0 bargain enablers that are massively underpriced later in season with increased budget and bargain options established.

Players like michu, lundstram, kane first season, mahrez first season, vardy first season etc kinda break the game and make it so you can have more expensive players without hurting your team

Generally one or two max premiums from the start, 3 premiums later in season

Rashford and Mitro are both sort of gamble which I wouldn't like in the first few gameweeks. But to each his own.

One solution could be to downgrade any one of them and use the extra 2m to upgrade the other and get a 5th defender.

Quite like the money in the bank with Neto and Bruno G in there.

There will be a 7.5m or below option who emerges in the first few weeks (maybe the United lads) and allows you to jump on easily.

So, if I need an extra £1m, which would be the preferred downgrade:

    A. Trent ➝ van Dijk
    B. James ➝ Trippier
    C. Cancelo ➝ Laporte
    D. Mount ➝ Coutinho

Assume the effective value of the extra million will be more than any of those downgrades.

So Guys, I'm a pretty awful fantasy player, trying to get better, what do you think of this team? Appreciate any responses. Part of my problem is poor planning and taking way to many unnecessary hits, however committed to eliminating that this time ( at least until the season starts and there is a double week lol) Highly undecided on Erikson/ Mateta or Countinho/Greenwood combo. Coutinho looks like points until the break, but I'm worried about having no viable third striker...thoughts?

If I've done my sums correctly your outfield subs add up to £15m
With little chance of points or even playing
You could go with Andreas Fulham mid £4.5m & Taylor Forest forward £4.5m
Leaving room for a up to £6m midfielder
If in any doubt go for the most selected in your price range available for any position
      Team okay though

Agreed on Mount/Maddison definitely having the capability of outscoring Diaz. Problem is if i lose Diaz for Mount or any other 8.0M, without losing TAA or Cancelo i’d need to find 1.0M for James>Robbo. I’m annoyed i can’t find 0.5ITB incase i need Wilson>Jesus

Not a bees fan but follow Hull here and there. Highly thought of - and stood out a mile in League 1. Do think he'll do well in that team/prem — could break through like Mount. Hard to say - may stutter like Harry Wilson. Morgan Gibbs White similar mold. Think we'll see a raft of young players making early debuts this season.

Think I’m starting to crack it.

    Ederson
Taa, James, Chill, Gabriel (could be Zinchenko)
    Salah, Rashford, Martinelli, Dias
    Kane, Jesus
    Forster, Andreas, Williams, Greenwood

Obviously Rash and Marti are pretty punty and need to be monitored but what fun is the game without a few punts?

Think it’s this is close to being the one.

Looks solid & we should know after preseason if Rashford is looking like he is back in.

Like the Zinchenko possible shout as he could be playing LCM so will offer a greater attacking threat. Keep an eye on it.

I did have him for the longest time but actually dropping him was the key. I realised points per mil at the price points, Cancelo and Ederson are basically the same. Gabriel is slightly better but a Zinchenko arsenal move could potentially obliterate all of them. I do agree tho, I feel nervous without him considering how he sorted me out last season.

    a. Cancelo and Neto
    b. (best 4.5 def) and (best 8.0 mid)

if you pick b let me know who you'd roll with

I will pick A to start with.

I think Cancelo + best 5.5 mid will outscore B. Also, one less transfer planning because B will require two transfers to get the best 4.5 def and the best 8.0m mid. Once the games start, I think it will be easier to find a 5.5m midfielder than a solid 4.5m defender.

Done for today. Will come back again tomorrow. Here's my No Salah team as of now with Haaland + Kane, premium defence and two £8.0m slots:

    Sanchez
    Trent, Robertson, Cancelo, Chilwell, Trippier
    Diaz, Mount, Martinelli
    Haaland, Kane
    [£4.0m | 3x £4.5m | £0.5 itb]

Exactly. It could be any one of them. I was initially fixated on Saka, until I realized he is not on penalties. Then, I am now looking at Mount, but not entirely convinced with those fixtures. So, considering Foden / Maddison. Least interested in Kulusevski at the moment but I am open to see what happens in the first couple of game weeks. City, Liverpool both start with excellent fixtures.

I find the site can become traffic jammed if replies are constantly turned on. I used to be able to turn on and off replies at will.

At the moment it is easy enough to navigate the page with replies turned on as there are not too many people commenting this early in the season but watch this space come deadline day. You can not navigate to anywhere you want without replies turned off for that minute or two it takes to catch what it is specifically you are looking for. But enough said about it for one night. Agree to disagree for now

First RMT (I think). I know they're everywhere atm

    Ederson
    TAA - Cancelo - *Neco* - James - Chilwell
    Salah (VC) | Maddison | Kulu | Bruno G
    Kane (C)

    4 - Andreas - Archer - Plange

    I like this structure
    - 2 x 8m slots
    - Kane/Haaland interchangeable slot
    - Neco could be a Livramento. That's the most changeable slot. Could be Neco... could be Robbo

I'm considering leaving it open to see which one is the best to jump on, but it's a very valid point

Arsenal cover would be Odegaard I think and ironically Tierney (been dismissing him all season)

That would cost another 8m slot though

Nice starting 11 but two 4.5 forwards is too high risk imo and leaves you with a v weak bench.

        • 8 Years

Fair. One variation was Brennan next to Kane/Haaland

Would probably cut Bruno from this variation to cover the bench

        Salah / 8m / 8m // 4.5 // 4.5
        Kane / Brennan // Archer

I am interested in those "better picks in the 4.5 mid category". I am sure they will emerge. But, at the moment, I cannot find a reliable (guranteed to start) bench fodder midfielder at that price point, except Andreas.

Like your team. One suggestion would be to replace Neco + £6.0m defender with two £5.0m defenders or a combination of £5.5m + £4.5m, because there could be more points with those alternate combinations.

A general problem with this structure of 5-4-1 is the bench, which makes two bench players unavailable. If you are fine with that, its a solid structure to find the max value from your millions.

        Thank you

I'm in a catch 22. You're right, when I cut one of Chilwell/James even for a Perisic that .5 and beyond really builds Neco upwards

BUT I've tried not having one of James/Chilwell, but I'm just too attached atm!!

Both James / Chilwell are solid picks. I was also in the same dilemma for a few days until I dropped James a few hours ago. Feels liberating and its a sacrifice for the the team. Hoping it will give me more points in total.

Season long chilly but he’s injury prone and Chelsea may be a little slow to get going, first 6 50/50 i recon, I suppose people will say chilly is 2m less but the 2nd striker does give you a better squad and an easier move to any striker below 8 if one of them starts fast

Hard to say, probably Chilwell if he can stay fit.
But you also need to consider the upside of owning Jesus as an enabler to other similar prices forwards if they really kick on. If you got James then I’d be picking Jesus out of the two for that reason and for better balance.

Laporte, Cash and Jesus all likely around the 150 mark.

First draft. Planning the 1 premium only strategy. Kane to Haaland in GW2 and happy to captain him for the next 4-5 weeks. Thoughts?

    Raya (4.0)
    TAA Robbo Cancelo James (Neco)
    Saka Mahrez Diaz (Andreas Murphy)
    Kane(C) Jesus Wilson

      Cancelo - Chilwell - TAA - Robbo - Trippier
      Coutinho - Sterling - Diaz
      Haaland - Jesus

It boils down to no Salah. If salah hits the groud running you could be in trouble but that said there is more than enough in your team to off set such an event.

I would gamble on son if i wasn't to go with salah but thats difficult if persisting with kane also

Do you guys think Martinelli will be a starter for Arsenal from the off?

      Probably, but anyone's guess.

I think this season it’s going to be much harder to guess because of the greater flexibility managers will have with their substitutions. It’ll probably mean more 1pts because less will play past 60mins and an lowering of overall total scores for the vast majority of players.

I think the five substitutions will not make a huge difference as teams need to play together to improve anyway, and multiple substitutions does not help any team cohesively. I can see a few later withdrawals for sure but i would think buisness as usual until the 80th minute of most games anyway

I have him in my draft as Arteta prefers him in the wide left slot over ESR.

Let’s see how preseason goes but it’s his spot to lose right now.

Avoid, not a good pick but slim pickings

Who’s gonna have the most points if they both stay fit?

    A) Trippier
    B) Cash
