FPL first-draft team reveals: 4-4-2 with Sancho

With Fantasy Premier League (FPL) live for 2022/23, we’re welcoming back our stellar team of Pro Pundits and Hall of Famers for the new campaign.

We’ll be hearing from a different writer every day in the aftermath of the FPL relaunch, to get their thoughts on the pricing and to see their initial picks.

Our contributors will be providing regular articles and team reveals throughout the new season, with only Premium Members able to access every single one.

Next up is Az, who added to his list of top 10k finishes in 2021/22.

Ah, pre-season hype. Of course, a 4-0 drubbing of Liverpool’s reserve squad and a 4-1 victory over Melbourne Victory has got me excited over Manchester United players, who I vowed to avoid just a week ago.

The thing is, with “big at the back”, Mohamed Salah (£13.0m), Erling Haaland (£11.5m) and Pedro Neto (£5.5m) featuring in almost every draft I see, I am looking for ways in which I can differentiate my squad a little bit.

I always like to have at least 2-3 players who I can get a bit excited about when I watch them play (usually before the crippling disappointment sets in). My first draft video for Fantasy Football Scout over on YouTube for example had me talking up the prospects of Chelsea-bound Raheem Sterling (£10.0m). I’m still very much sold on the new Blues recruit, but of course, when you see what taking out a premium-priced player for the rest of your squad can do, there is temptation.

So, I’ve traded Sterling out for Luis Diaz (£8.0m), who watchers of my “Who is the best £8.0m midfielder” video will know I rated as my top pick in his price bracket. A popular choice on the FFS boards, I’m backing him to have a stellar campaign after his immediate impact when signing for Liverpool in January.

MAN UTD PLAYERS

Using this money, I’ve then been able to upgrade one of my heroes of last season, Bruno Guimarães (£6.0m), who sits in a whopping 20% of all teams at the time of writing. In comes Jadon Sancho (£7.5m). Now I know full well this is off the back of some, quite frankly, meaningless pre-season friendlies. However, when I initially saw his price tag of just £7.5m (a huge £2.0m down from £9.5m last season) my curiosity was piqued. To have any chance of success in the Premier League next season, Erik ten Haag will need to get the absolute best out of Sancho, who managed 38 goals and 51 assists in his time at Borussia Dortmund but struggled in his maiden season in England.

A big factor in my decision as to whether or not to start with Sancho will likely depend on what happens with talismanic figure Cristiano Ronaldo (£10.5m). Rumours continue to swirl that he isn’t happy at the club, but in truth, it is my belief that his presence in the team negatively impacts the assets around him. If we see Ronaldo depart the club, might we see Anthony Martial (£7.0m) or even Marcus Rashford (£6.5m) lead the line for the Red Devils? If this happens, ten Haag’s new “press high, play aggressively” approach would likely see United’s cut-price attackers back on the radar. However, if Ronaldo sticks around and the team remains glued to feeding the 37-year-old, I fear their assets may be dead weights once again.

I want to see a bright, bold and attacking United side. While Ronaldo’s goals were crucial for Manchester United finishing semi-respectably, my sense is that his general presence in the team hindered those around him. A perfect example of this was the 3-0 win against Spurs last season, in which he scored all three goals. However, United’s general play was really poor, and they simply relied on moments of brilliance from the Portuguese superstar. Looking at Ronaldo’s defensive contributions for example, over the season, he made just two interceptions across all matches (equal with Edinson Cavani who played just 162 minutes). In terms of tackles, Ronaldo’s total of 12 paled to the likes of Diogo Jota (£9.0m; 81), Ivan Toney (£7.0m; 59) and even the likes of Neal Maupay (£6.5m; 31). In fairness to Ronaldo, Spurs forward Harry Kane (£11.5m) didn’t show massive difference in his stats, with just three interceptions and 26 tackles. However, Kane created nearly double the number of chances (49) compared to Ronaldo (26), highlighting the impact he has on the players around him. No player had a better mins/shot than Ronaldo last season (22.3), but it’s likely these will be shared more around the team if he was to drop out, with Sancho (hopefully) reaping the rewards.

First time dropping the team. Any feedback would be appreciated:

    4.5 GK
    Trent, Cancelo, Tomiyasu, Botman
    Salah, Diaz, Martineli
    Haaland, Jesus, Wilson

Subs - 4.0 GK, Fornals, Andreas, Plange

I'm thinking Fornals can come in for one of the defenders GW2 as West Ham's fixtures aren't so bad once City are out of the way.

    GK, Def, Mid

    A: Alisson, Mings, Bruno F.
B: Ederson, TAA, Rashford (£0.5m ITB)

I already have Cancelo, Tomiyasi, Perisic and R. James regardless

Basically, it is a question of changing formation perhaps by downgrading B. Fernandes to Rashford in an effort to get another premium defender.

Another option would be to downgrade your 5.5 GK to a 4.5 GK, saving enough with your 0.5 itb to have a midfielder at 8.0 rather than Rashford

Anyone not believing in Jesus, and wanting to save funds from the collection plate, rank these sub-8.0m strikers...

    A. Wilson (7.5m)
    B. Toney (7.0m)
    C. Watkins (7.5m)
    D. Mitrovic (6.5m)
    E. Antonio (7.5m)
    F. Jimenez (7.0m)

Mitro for the punt, Toney and Antonio should both do OK.

Currently looking at Mbuemo for £6m. He's not going to get loads of points but is nailed to start, a bit cheaper and will probably score a few every now and then

Is Chilwell first choice after his injuries? I am not sure but I think Alonso played a few games at LWB. If he stays could Chilwell be rotated and not a good fpl prospect?

If he starts 75% of the games won't he score like a 150 for a 6m guy? Wouldn't a 5m guy be of better value in such a case

        1. F4L
          • 9 Years

would be hoping for 6 PPG when starting, but yeah some 5m defenders could prove better value if you need the money elsewhere

No, he will still be better value considering that the 25% of the games where he wouldn't play, you would get points from your bench.

For me, its the points per game which matters not the total points as long as I have 11 players on the pitch.

Kane, Depay and Son would be a frightening front 3. With Kulu and Richarlison to come on from the bench.

With the new depth and strength at the back and Contes organisation I could see Spurs challenging this year.

He's a decent goal threat but he also loves a yellow card and even though he's captain I'd actually be curious what happens when Konsa gets back to fitness with Diego Carlos there now. Honestly I think Konsa is excellent and on defending merits at least, I would find it very hard to bench someone like him for Mings

Lisandro Martinez is set to become Erik ten Hag's third major signing at Manchester United after a deal was agreed on Sunday.

The versatile 24-year-old will follow his former Ajax coach to Old Trafford in a deal that will reportedly cost United €57million (£48million), potentially rising to €67million (£56.5million) with add-ons.

Is there a table somewhere? So what's a 50 point reduction in score in overall rank terms? Just wanted to know the value of a point in fpl

              Can you reword the question?

Are you asking what 50 points above the 'average' final points total of all players last season would give you in terms of rank?

                • 1 Year

Sorry, what I meant was I wanted to know was what impact on overall rank would a 50 point difference in total score would make? I wanted to know more about this type of a table-

                Total Points | Overall Rank
                2500 | 1
                2450 | ?
                2400 | ?

I know every season differs which is why I mentioned "average".

I suspect the distribution isn't linear so the magnitude of the rank may also determine the variance

Its a fantastic site if you're into your analytics, as you appear to be. Once the season starts you can see all kinds of info like the exact rank gain per pount for each of your players, and it gives you updated points/bonus/rank etc live (official scores on app tend to take a while to update)

Oh that's awesome. Makes fpl interesting. I had a few drafts wherein my estimated season totals differed about 50 points which I did not think was big. But from this table, every point matters big time haha.

I would say 3. Tomiyasu and Trippier.

But since you are playing 5 at the back, I strongly suggest to upgrade your budget to reflect that. You want your 5th defender to replace your 4th mid / 2nd fwd (who would be at least 5m - 5.5m) - that's when you will be able to outscore 4-4-2 / 4-5-1 teams. Neto or some other 5.5m mid will probably outscore Tomiyasu.

Aaronson, might change but sounded like be was comfortable on the left and right the other day and if he's playing in that second set of 2's if Marsch is playing 4-2-2-2 then I think he could do OK. Hopefully the double Liverpool is enough for us! I always try to have a fairly varied team if I can, this year is probably the first where in the whole 15 I have a decent few doubles but even that may change if I move Tomiyasu to Fofana

I think the best you could hope would be for 2 to 3 points per game week from that position.

Plus get an injury and you're going to have to play two of them

        1. Moxon
          • 9 Years

Fair points - however it allows more points to be gained elsewhere and injured players can always be transferred out

If you're aware they're injured. Quite often you don't know until game day, by which time you've already made your transfer.

But the reality is we're only building teams for the first 5 to 6 game weeks before we wildcard so maybe worth a punt.

If I don't fall back in line with Salah and Haaland, hows this looking?

      Pope
      TAA, Robbo, Cancelo, Doherty
      Son, Maddison, JWP, Neto
      Kane, Jesus

Darlow. S Longstaff, Lyle Taylor, Neco Williams.

I think with Covid-19 still around minutes from the bench will be important still in the 2022/23 season.

Will Doherty start, is Neto the best bet at that price point what else would you change?

Doherty I would guess will probably start but is a risky option.

Neto is also a risk but as good a risk as any other £5.5m mid. Nobody else at that price point stands out. Maybe Fornals but Wolves have better opening fixtures. Fraser at Newcastle is worth keeping an eye on in pre-season

The Doherty rumours seem flimsy but with Lucas Moura now a 4th option in his position I am starting to waver. Awaiting further info, I suppose.

Aaronson (5.5) has been impressing me in Leeds' friendlies (watching replay of Villa game now)

Going to have to bite the bullet here and get Jesus, innit?

Getting cold feet about not having him. That being said I watched his goal from yesterday and laughed at how bad the defending was. Wasn't anything exceptional in the game last week either. But he will score goals and can't have them all. Think I'm going to try hold off and see

I'm not excited about Jesus, but he's the best value of the sub-premium forwards, and I don't want to risk Haaland as sole striker.

Hello again guys. Finished 4.5k last season and i am back to hit another grrat season with your advices of course.. there is problems as always but here is first draft and of course pretty template:

      Raya (4.)
      Taa Cancelo James Cash Tomiyaso
      Salah Sancho Diaz (dasilva andreas)
      Haaland Jesus (greenwood)

The first question after I made this team is.. how god to fit my favourite player Son here??? What should be the sacrifice.. Mo? Defensive? Where

      And yes Hello again

        Cash to Neco
Sancho to Neto (other 5.5s are available)
That’s three million, which gets you Diaz to Son 1 mil over budget. Hmm.
Probably going to have to sacrifice Salah/Haaland.

Yep, has to be Haaland and Sancho to Son and Toney/Mitrovic maybe??

Or go all the way down to Undav and upgrade Dasilva with the spare 1? Gets you a 5.5 as first sub.

Wouldn't be a sub, if you're taking Haaland out you need an extra first team player

Flip flopping between Son and Kane, here is my Kane draft. Thoughts?

      Ramsdale
      TAA Robertson Cancelo James Zinchenko
      Salah Coutinho Neto
      Kane Jesus

      Gazzaniga Andreas Colback Taylor

Prefer Kane atm - extra .5 offsets clean sheet points a little, and he’s on pens. Also balances team structure better and makes for an easy switch to Haaland.

        I have re-included Salah

        Ederson (Hennessey)
        Gabriel, James, Robbo, Cancelo (Neco)
        Ødegaard, Mount, Salah, Neto (Andreas)
        Jesus, Kane (Greenwood)

Can easily swap in Haaland, KDB, or Son as needed.

He's very expensive. He's also now tied down to a new contract, doesn't have a world cup to go to, and in his worst season in the PL got 27 returns

Yes, I think it makes a difference. He had that situation hanging over his and the club's heads for nearly a year now and reports came out at the start of the summer that if he didn't renew he'd have no issue going to a PL rival, that absolutely would have had an impact. Now he and the club know he'll be there for a good number of years more and know he's fully dedicated to them.

What would you go for fellas?

      A) Jesus & Bowen
      (Bench -> Neco | Pereira | Patterson)

      B) Son & Neco
      (Bench -> Pereira | Patterson | 4.5 fwd)

      Thanks

Hate to say it as a Son fan, but A for me. Means you don’t have to start Neco as often, and Jesus/Bowen have the potential to get Son’s points or more together.

Cheers all, that was the one thing to consider between a twomium and a threemium, and confirms my gut.

The only thing really going for B is it would allow Salah, Son & Haaland.
But I’m only 2 moves away from it as shown in the Q so I think it is less risky to start with A.

So, I have two drafts, one riskier than the other. Changes in CAPS.
      A
      MESLIER-KLAESSON
      Trent-Cancelo-Chilwell-Cash-Neco
      Salah-Diaz-MOUNT-DASILVA-Andreas
      Kane-Jesus-Archer

      B
      RAMSDALE-BEGOVIC
      Trent-Cancelo-Chilwell-Cash-Neco
      Salah-Diaz-BRUNO G-NETO-Andreas
      Kane-Jesus-Archer

Thoughts? Currently on B for the balance.
