MANCHESTER UNITED 3-1 CRYSTAL PALACE

  • Goals: Martial, Rashford, Sancho | Ward
  • Assists: Dalot, van de Beek, Martial | Milivojevic

Match highlights

Manchester United made it a clean sweep of pre-season victories so far by comfortably defeating Crystal Palace 3-1 in Melbourne.

Attacking trio Anthony Martial (£7.0m), Marcus Rashford (£6.5m) and Jadon Sancho (£7.5m) continue to impress and were all on the scoresheet, which Bruno Fernandes (£10.0m) discussed after the game.

“… the three guys up front have been much more aggressive in the way they press and they are strong too. They make the last line squeeze and it makes the midfielders come a little bit higher, it makes it so, when we recover the ball, we are being closer to the ball too.

We all know that everyone wants to score goals, but the main ones have to be the strikers. They know that they have to be there to score goals and they are doing really well. We have to keep supporting them in making them happy because we know that they lead from the goals.” – Bruno Fernandes

Martial added to his strikes against Liverpool and Melbourne Victory with a composed finish from a lovely left-footed Diogo Dalot cross (£4.5m), while Sancho was electric on the right-wing and has arguably been United’s standout player of the tour so far.

As for Dalot, there was a moment in the first-half when he made another one of those infield runs, cutting inside Sancho and offering a passing option, and it’s that partnership that is already looking strong.

Tyrell Malacia (£4.5m), meanwhile, made his first United start, lasting 77 minutes.

“I think it’s pre-season and we are happy with the improvement we see but also you see a lot of work to do. We scored some wonderful goals and that is also true. I agree (that we are winning the ball higher up in the field in dangerous positions) and that is also the demand on the team. We press all day and, if we can, do that high up the pitch. But if we can’t, we get to do that in a lower block but we also have to press and do it together as a team.” – Erik ten Hag

As for Crystal Palace, Joel Ward (£4.5m) headed in a Luka Milivojevic (£4.5m) corner with 15 minutes remaining, while Jack Butland (£4.5m) was forced off after feeling pain following a fingertip save.

Manchester United XI (4-2-3-1): de Gea; Dalot (Wan-Bissaka 66), Maguire (Fish 65), Lindelof (Telles 66), Malacia (Laird 77); McTominay (van de Beek 46), Fred (Savage 66); Sancho (Amad 66), Fernandes (Iqbal 66), Rashford (Hannibal 66); Martial (Elanga 66)

Crystal Palace XI (4-3-3): Butland (Matthews 15); Clyne (Quick 65), Andersen (Siddik 77), Ward (O’Brien 77), Mitchell (Adaramola 65); Milivojevic (Boateng 77), Phillips (Ozoh 65), Rak-Sakyi (Raymond 65); Ebiowei (Banks 77), Ayew (Akinwale 77), Mateta (Ola-Adebomi 65)

GILLINGHAM 2-3 CRYSTAL PALACE

  • Goals: Zaha x2, Benteke
  • Assists: Benteke, Zaha

Match highlights

The second part of Crystal Palace’s friendly double-header on Tuesday took place at the Priestfield Stadium, where a Wilfried Zaha (£7.0m) brace and Christian Benteke (£5.5m) goal was enough to earn a 3-2 win.

The Eagles put out a strong XI consisting of players who didn’t travel to Singapore and Australia, with Zaha, Benteke, Marc Guehi (£4.5m), Eberechi Eze (£5.5m) and new-signing Cheick Doucoure (£5.0m) all featuring from the off.

Zaha, meanwhile, was in confident mood and heavily involved from the left-wing, while budget forward Luke Plange (£4.5m) followed up his hat-trick against Ipswich Town with another start.

Crystal Palace XI: Goodman, Boateng (Wells-Morrison 68), Sheridan, Guehi (Gordon 68), Riedewald (Addae 68), Doucoure (Bartley 68), Eze (MacArthur 68), Schlupp (Hughes 68), Plange (Cardogan 79), Zaha (Mooney 79), Benteke (Watson 68)

RANGERS 3-1 WEST HAM UNITED

  • Goals: Soucek
  • Assists: Zouma

Match highlights

West Ham United suffered a 3-1 defeat at Ibrox on Tuesday, their first loss of pre-season.

After a finely balanced first-half, Rangers stepped up a gear with three goals inside 15 minutes, before Tomas Soucek (£5.5m) pulled one back from a corner for David Moyes’ side.

Declan Rice (£5.0m) got some more pre-season minutes under his belt but new centre-back signing Nayef Aguerd (£5.0m) picked up an ankle injury, with Issa Diop (£4.5m) coming on in his place.

However, Moyes later revealed the Moroccan hadn’t suffered a break.

“We’ve already had Nayef x-rayed and there’s no break in his ankle, which is good news. It might be some ligaments, or he’s twisted his ankle – it blew up immediately so we have to hope it’s not a problem.” – David Moyes

Elsewhere, Jarrod Bowen (£8.5m) was probably West Ham’s best player but failed to get the goal his play deserved.

“They’re a good side, but I thought the goals showed the other side to us too. It’s not like us to defend the way we did, but that wasn’t the main reason. We didn’t show enough attacking purpose and when we had a couple of half-chances we didn’t take them. Look, it’s a pre-season game, so hopefully we can get it out of the way and move on. It was always going to be a difficult game, but I’m disappointed with a lot of elements of the game and things that we did.

I hope it comes as a good thing having a wake-up call, but I thought it was a good pre-season last year when we won all the games. You want to win the games and you want to go in (to the season) in good form. We certainly need to make a lot of changes and do something different, that’s for sure.” – David Moyes

West Ham United XI (4-2-3-1): Fabianski; Johnson (Coufal 55), Zouma, Aguerd (Diop 24), Cresswell, Rice (Downes 55), Lanzini (Soucek 55); Bowen, Fornals (Coventry 75), Benrahma (Vlasic 55), Antonio (Mubama 75)

STRASBOURG 2-2 BRENTFORD

  • Goals: Wissa, Lewis-Potter
  • Assists: Janelt

Match highlights

Brentford’s pre-season tour of Germany ended with a 2-2 draw against Ligue 1 side Strasbourg.

Yoane Wissa (£5.5m) scored a superb first-half effort, blasting into the net after a decent first touch, while Keane Lewis-Potter (£5.5m) is off the mark following his 16m move from Hull City.

The pair may end up competing for minutes in 2022/23, although for those considering Wissa as a budget midfielder, Athletic journalist Jay Harris sounded upbeat on his chances of starting Gameweek 1 in a recent Q&A:

“If Brentford start the season playing 4-3-3, I expect Yoane Wissa and Bryan Mbeumo to play rather than Lewis-Potter. Wissa was the club’s second-leading goalscorer last season with 10. Mbeumo recorded the most assists (seven) and Frank also values his work out of possession. This will allow Lewis-Potter to be gradually integrated into the side, instead of being thrown in straight away as he steps up a division from the Championship. The England U21 international’s favourite position is on the left wing, which suggests he will mainly be competing against Wissa for game time, although he is versatile. Lewis-Potter’s arrival gives Frank more options up front.” – Jay Harris, Brentford reporter for The Athletic

Ivan Toney (£7.0m), meanwhile, hit the bar from 10 yards out, with Thomas Frank generally happy with his team’s efforts in the final-third:

“There were a lot of positives. It was a game against a good side and overall, we kept them quiet. I like the intention and intensity. We lacked a bit of quality sometimes. We’d like to play even quicker but the pitch was slow. In the game, we maybe created six chances, so we need to score one or two more goals. We also need to defend better in the box.” – Thomas Frank

Brentford XI (4-3-3): Raya (Cox 60); Hickey (Roerslev 60), Bech (Crama 60), Jansson (Oyegoke 60), Henry (Stevens 60); Jensen (Dasilva 60), Janelt (Trevitt 60), Onyeka (Baptiste 60); Mbeumo (Dervisoglu 60), Wissa (Ghoddos 60), Toney (Lewis-Potter 60)

BRAGA 2-1 BOURNEMOUTH

  • Goals: Solanke
  • Assists:

Match highlights

Bournemouth ended their Portugal training camp with defeat against a strong Braga outfit that finished fourth in the Primeira Liga last season.

However, Dominic Solanke (£6.0m) netted his second goal of pre-season and really should have added to it, going close on several occasions.

Ryan Christie (£5.5m) linked up particularly well with Solanke with some clever passes, while at the other end, ‘keeper Mark Travers (£4.5m) made two smart saves.

In the 70th minute Bournemouth made wholesale changes, with a number of academy prospects taking to the pitch.

Bournemouth XI: Travers (Lossl 70), Smith (Genesini 70), Mepham (Stacey 70), Hill (Greenwood 70), Zemura (Sadi 70), Billing (Lowe 70), Cook (Stanislas 70), Lerma (Marcondes 70), Rothwell (Anthony 70), Christie (Dembele 70), Solanke (Moore 70)

Frankly speaking, there is a case for a single premium team (Salah obviously) imho. I can see just 1 fixture in the opening 6 that Salah is not good captain choice (United away), but in that GW City doesn't have that easy fixture either (Newcastle away from what I remember). Spurs play Wolves in that fixture. If I had to rank premium options:

    1. Salah/Haaland
    1. Salah/Kane
    3. Salah (only just below)

United away is a pretty good fixture

Then you can just perma cap Salah. No need for any other premium.

tbh reading here people get scared of the ownership of big hitters that will inevitably do well (like 6 ppg at least) but spreading out your budget does wonders

Son GW1 premium, KDB GW2 premium for me - just got to hope Son can match Salah in GW1, pretty confident KDB does him in GW2

Problem is, pairing Salah with Haaland/Spurs premium assets gives you captaincy headache either way. For me its either Salah as a single premium or Spurs&City premium combo

I just went with Salah last year and perma-capped him. Big at the back and one premium. I was 2k at Christmas, but mismanaged Afcon and Chelsea at the world club thing. I'll try the same again this year.

How much do you think Kane outscores Haaland by against Southampton? Spurs couldn't beat them in 2 games under Conte last season, and there's no reason why Haaland couldn't score against West Ham. If you end up needing to move someone else out as well after GW1 then there's a 4pt cost to it. Honestly I just don't see the point in this plan, just go with Haaland from the off.

They can always buy some other left footed full back. Thinking they may need to given they only have Walker and Cancelo to playe there (Ake and Laporte too but not their natural positions)

feels like it's going to hinge on what Diaz does, we already know TAA and Robbo are amazing picks but if Diaz can beat all the 8m mids - then having Son/KDB/Kane/Haaland instead of Salah is going to work pretty well (even if Salah himself also does well)

I've been thinking along these lines too. Currently I have TAA, Salah and Diaz, but I REALLY want Robbo in my team. And if Diaz scores like Mane, then Salah suddenly looks like the one to drop in order to bring back Robbo.

Yeah definitely, I'm considering 2 options..owning one each from TOT and MCI (Son or Kane, KDB or Haaland) or setting up a really good team with 1 premium and using transfers to rotate the captaincy between the two.

so this is where I'm at atm:

    Pope
    TAA (c) Chilwell James Matip
    Sterling Diaz Maddison Sancho
    Solanke Wilson

    fodder Zaha Trippier Mitro

might captain Diaz instead (Fulham aren't going to be ready for GW1 unless defensive signings happen pronto), strong bench means higher PPG with targeting easier fixtures + less hits; first GW is tough benching decision, thereafter some nice rotation

aim will be to keep hold of first WC as long as possible, use it when needed instead of planning for one

cheers; for me money stays on the bench, i know its not a popular way to play the game but yeah. Agreed up top is weak and im concerned about missing out on Jesus/Vardy, one dilemma is:
        A - Sterling + Wilson
B - Mount + Vardy(which obviously keeps the option of Jesus open without having to make 2 transfers)

Mitro and Solanke will just have massively high goal involvement unless something drastically changes, and cheap strikers like that i like (on pens, 90 mins most weeks)

Why not scale the bench back to a decent 4.5 defender for rotation thus freeing up monies to get yourself Jesus etc.

Also Matip has serious competition from Konate this year.

Play your own game though, just trying to help..

yeah of course, I take all the advice on board, i'm thankful for it 🙂

I'll keep a close eye on Matip/Konate, maybe Klopp will mention something before the season starts if Konate is going to get more minutes in the league

I like your first 11. It's nice to see some different names and I think Sterling and Sancho will go well this year. I would definitely take some value out of your bench though as you've got so much money tied up in players that aren't going to play... You could then upgrade Matip to Robbo or upgrade Solanke

cheers; trust me the players on my bench will play a lot over the course of the season!

Upgrading Matip to Robbo is definitely something at the back of my mind, the only thing stopping me is a reluctance to play 5 atb purely because i find it boring when trying to enjoy FPL, even if it is effective; matip will either be benched by Klopp or me a lot more than Robbo would, so that saves me from 5 atb when i want that 5mil defender to start 🙂

Strong bench gives you a lot of flexibility. And I believe in total value for the money spent. However, you want to maximize the total points per million for the team -- individually high ppm doesn't give you the maximum total points. In order to do so, it is crucial to have the highest scoring player of the game as the captain (irrespective of cost) and spread the rest of the money. If you think Trent is going to be the highest scoring player, then its a good decision to captain him, irrespective of his cost.

I think for such teams to work, you have to find a balance between ppm / ppg and game time. There are players with very high ppm / ppg but may not play many minutes. Examples are Mahrez, Foden, Grealish, Matip. The problem becomes more complicated because they appear as substitutes late in the game, blocking points from the strong bench.

Trent, Robertson and Cancelo have the highest ppg per million among players who play consistently. So, you may want to have them in your squad. One possible way to afford that would be to downgrade Sterling and/or Zaha.

Overall, its a nice way to approach the game, as long as you are investing enough time to find the best players in terms of ppg and ppm.

cheers, agree with what you have said; captaincy is an issue but between TAA/Sterling/Diaz/punt on whomever i think i can average a solid 6.6-6.9 ppg over the course of the season, which is decent enough

agree about the City mids/in general players who aren't nailed but with high potential, decided i won't touch them this year unless there are injuries and one because essentially nailed. not being subbed on is massive, that's why Matip would be fine even if he started 3/5, my first bench player will be decent always. Chilwell/James are too good anyways over T.Silva/Koulibaly for me to care about their odd 1 pointers

Matip vs Robbo is tough but for personal reasons right now it's Matip i've settled on, Cancelo I have my reservations about this season also

Essentially it's all about maximising ppg, try to rarely play a player away against a top 10 side, or vs a top 6 side (home/away). Subsequently people like Wilson, who might get 4.5ppg, suddenly becomes a 5.5ppg player in my team, Mitro goes from 3.8 ppg to a 4.5ppg, Zaha 4.5 ppg to 5.4 ppg etc Also can immediately jump on any bandwagons at virtually any price point

Im sorry this comment was so long 😆

I've only been able to find these two (from a super quick search).

          https://twitter.com/Ramorey_FPL/status/1291396197924646912

          https://thetopflight.com/2020/08/19/fantasy-premier-league-2021-first-reaction-im-thinking-back/amp/3/

Both lean towards Martial getting less points as a FWD compared to a MID (and that's usually the case with most players). Being a FWD helps with his bonus (which he's typically not great at), but he loses CS points & a goal point which is quite the deduction.

            • 7 Years

Much thanks! Yeah seems that he would indeed get significantly fewer points, I thought that the loss from 1 point from goal and CS would be balanced with gain from bonus (which he rarely got), but the additional bonus would only be 7 points. Nice to know.

Using the points predictions from FFS I've drafted many teams - and used some excel wizardry to find the optimum team based on FPL Points and Price. Doesn't account for GW strategy, wildcards, captains, triple captains, bench boosts etc. The winner by some distance (and I've excluded benched players) is:

        Pickford
        TAA, James, Cancelo, Tomiyasu, Chilwell
        Salah, Kulu, Bruno G
        Haaland, Jesus

        Bench: Gazzaniga, S.Armstrong, Colback, Taylor

The surprise was Pickford - but a 4.5 keeper seems to return the greatest value and his predicted points haul was greatest - that said, only by an extra 4 points vs Meslier, Raya and Sanchez.

        Thoughts?

Seems unhelpful to optimize a team for 38 GWs when we have two wildcards to play by GW 16. More realistic to optimize for 4-8 GWs, imo at least
