How to compare FPL players using minutes/appearance filters

When comparing players in the Premium Members Area of Fantasy Football Scout, it’s often useful to look at their ‘Minutes Per’ stats or check the ‘per90’ filter to level the playing field.

This makes a comparison between players with disparate playing times more insightful.

Ideally we want to target players who are certain starters, but first XI players may have missed a period through injury or perhaps they’ve burst onto the scene and gone on to establish themselves after impressing as a sub.

‘Minutes Per’ or ‘per90’ allows us to see who performs best if playing time were equal.

However, it’s important not to forget time played entirely; a sub who makes an impact off the bench might top a per90 stats table but that doesn’t mean we should be adding them to our Fantasy team.

By the same token, players who regularly complete matches will suffer compared to those taken off earlier in the game. Last season Gabriel Martinelli (£6.0m) averaged 64 minutes per match, so is looking at his per 90 stats slightly misleading if he’s not playing 90 minutes? A per appearance comparison might be better.

As always, context and interpretation is important.

Refining Results

To help improve the results of a per90 comparison, last season we added two important filters to our Player Stats tables:

  • Minimum Appearances (‘Min App’)
  • Minutes Played per Appearance (‘Mins/App’)

Now we can refine our sample size by filtering out players who haven’t played many games, and we can also remove substitutes by setting the Minutes per Appearance (‘Mins/App’) filter.

  • top ten ‘minutes per expected goals’ from 2021/22 with Mane and Aubameygang removed

Applying these settings to our KPI Attacking table and sorting by ‘Minutes per Expected Goal’ makes for interesting reading.

Raheem Sterling (£10.0m) and Gabriel Jesus (£8.0m) feature prominently but while both are likely to get more pitch time this season, will they sustain their impressive ‘minutes per expected goal’ rates away from Man City?

Conditional Formatting

Premium Members have the option to refine their results even further when creating a custom Members table.

The ‘Conditions’ in a custom Members table act like the filters in Player Stats.

But, unlike in the Player Stats section, there’s no restriction on the filters/conditions that can be applied. So you can be much more specific with your requirements.

Perhaps you feel a minimum of 60 minutes per appearance is too generous and that 70 minutes would be better, you can apply that setting in a custom Members table.

  • top eight ‘xG per Shot Non-Penalty’ from 2021/22 with Mane removed

When creating this ‘High Quality Chances’ table, rather than filtering by the number of appearances I decided to set a minimum number of non-penalty shots instead. I also upped my ‘Minutes Played per Appearance’ to a floor of 70 minutes and added a ‘Minutes Played per Start’ filter.

The table throws up some fascinating results but perhaps raises more questions than answers.

Playing for a new team, in a new system, will Sterling continue to be presented with such high-quality chances? Or will Thomas Tuchel adapt his approach to get the best out of his new recruit?

Will Phil Foden’s (£8.0m) xG per Shot suffer following the arrival of Erling Håland (£11.5m) as centre forward?

Can the elite finishers from that table, Son Heung-min (£12.0m) and Jamie Vardy (£9.5m), who needed just 0.7 and 0.69 xG to score one goal, maintain their high level in front of goal?

Time Out

Whether it’s used for filtering results or for making an informed comparison, ‘time played’ is one of the most important considerations for a Fantasy manager.

And with the implementation of the five substitutes rule next season, it’s likely to play an even greater role in our decision-making.

In part two, we’ll reveal the tweaks we’ve made to our time played stat used for all ‘Minutes Per’ and ‘per90’ metrics. In particular how we’ve improved the minutes recorded for those substituted in a match.

Often a stat we take for granted, playing time can have a crucial bearing on the stats tables we use when planning our transfers.

I not sure that 'xG per Shot Non-Penalty’ is a useful statistic.

Antonio is on the list but Kane isn't. If they were both to have a chance with the exact same xG you would expect Kane to have a much higher chance of scoring due to his elite finishing.
I'm assuming the 'xG per shot' just correlates the positions shots were taken from, given a higher figure to shots closer to goal and more central. This explains why the tap in merchants (Sterling, Antonio) are higher up on the list than the elite finishers (Kane, Fernandes). When in reality Kane and Fernandes score a variety of goals from more difficult positions.

Yes this description is spot on.
Also, I would have expected Werner to be near the top of the list for 'xG per shot' as he got in lots of great goal scoring positions but happened to miss (sitters).

Distinguishes between someone getting a few high xG chances/ a lot of low xG shots? Although you could maybe already guess this from shot volume & xG I suppose

If Haaland is to replicate first season by Aguero, then we can expect at most:

30 starts + few more apps
23 goals (of which 3 were pens)
throw in at least 3 assists
    project at least 20 baps

it seems he should hit 185 points at minimum. 200 is defo possibility.

Do you think he will start 30+ games (if fit, of course)?

30+ goals in the 1st season? I'd say anything above 23 goals will be above my expectation.

RMT predicts around 21 goals and 8 assists - think this is reasonable

      Pep stats

Last season starts (subs). Starts + subs = apps
      37(0) Ederson
      36(0) Cancelo
      33(0) Laporte
      33(0) Rodri
      33(2) Bernardo
      ----------------------
      27(2) Dias
      25(5) De Bruyne
      24(4) Foden
      23(7) Sterling
      22(4) Grealish
      21(7) Jesus
      20(7) Gundo
      15(3) Mahrez

So Mahrez, for some instance is hitting insane numbers for 8.0 MID, BUT, obviously, he is out of my team because of Pep Roulette.

Interesting, I personally can’t see City being in a position to comfortably rest Haaland 10 times from the starting line up across the course of a season. I think it will be far too tight at the top to have that risk, especially when Pep could theoretically rely on Alvarez for the European games until the latter stages.

If he succumbs to injury then that’s obviously a different matter.

Mahrez is still Mr Champions League isn't he? Only realised he's 31 now as well when his contract extension was announced the other day, he's clearly very fit but still doesn't offer the level of pressing that someone like Foden does

Ok il bite, The forest love is way over the top and is I believe mainly driven by one contributer.

Forest cane up through the play offs and have lost some of their best players. They have Steve cook in central defence!

Who are these astute signings? Neco Williams? Liverpool do great at selling these younger players for 10 to 20 mil who are not premier league quality Ibe, Solanki, Brewster.

Forest will be towards the bottom all season I would t go near them.

Nothing to do with being positive, it’s factual you call it bing a half glass full person. I call it expectation management. They will have one of the lowest salary budget in the division which directly correlates to your finishing position. Where do you think they will finish?

Kind of does actually if you're a fan of a particular club, which I am in this case. Same could be said of Brentford last season re budget and they survived comfortably in the end. I think Forest will finish somewhere between 14th and 20th. Hoping for as high a finish as possible of course 🙂

Brentfords are a reasonable comparison though I think their recruitment model is very different to other teams. Maybe we are getting our wires crossed, from an FPL perspective if you finish 17th to 20th (IMHO) more than likely their will not be many effective players.

        A) Doherty should start season as 1st choice, but after that - risk of rotation, Rashford is decent punt for start I guess but I wouldn't expect much unless Ten Haag does wonders, Bruno G - will be regular starter and get decent amount of points, solid option

        B) Tomiyasu - high ceiling, low price, too often injured for my taste, also a lot of defenders there ATM, will be rotated. Kulu - tad bit overpriced, for me Mount/Diaz at this point better choice, Bailey - same as Rash at this point, good punt for 5.0

From assured mins stand of point - A)

Looking at predicted line ups neither Bailey or elenga included so is there a safer 5m midfielder or should I just get fornals at 5.5?

Oh I didn't even realise predicted lineups were up... I do think Bailey is quite risky, but keep an eye on Villa's remaining friendlies - if we don't see Ings & Watkins paired up, or much of Buendia, then maybe Bailey could work

Not really anyone safe in the 5m bracket unless you want to go for Rice, he'll guarantee you appearance pts and will get attacking returns here and there but he won't have the upside of someone like Bailey or Willock when they start. Keep an eye on Stuart Armstrong or Willock, if either look like being reliable starters they're very nice options

Strong Frontline but no scope for any contingency if anyone gets injured or doesn't play....you could for now keep James and downgrade chilwell to add another mid level midfield....tuncel has mentioned that chilwell is still rusty so may not necessarily start gw1

I would be more inclined to downgrade 1 or 2 defenders (Chilwell to Cash & Robbo VVD or Matip) and this means you can upgrade Dasilva to Rashford.

The midfield just scares me a bit

Any suggestions on the below GW1 draft?

      Ramsdale, 4.0
      Robertson, James, Dias, dalot, neco
      Son, Diaz, Mount, Rashford, Andreas
      Haaland, Jesus, 4.5

0.5 in the bank, switch from mount to Bowen in GW2 (facing Nottingham Forest)

Any feedback would be appreciated! Thanks!

Not at all. Still very young and a big step up, Conte said it was effectively a purchase by the club for the future and not one that he requested himself

Anyone else REALLY feeling Chelsea sill destroy a Richarlison-less Everton GW1? Mount and James are so explosive and could absolutely smash it.

I think Saliba will compete for White and Soares vs Tomyiaso ... Which is best 4.5 def in Arsenal ?!

I'd consider starting with a nailed 4.5 def from a different club and then switch once we know who's the preferred 4.5 Arsenal option.

Botman, Mings or a Brighton/Wolves def perhaps?

Yes was thinking about Ricardo Periera but not sure he is nailed

Justin/Thomas seem to be Rodger’s long term wingback options so I’d probably avoid Periera for what it’s worth.

      Good morning, all!

Would a Notts Forest fan (or anyone else in the know) be able to shed any light on who their starting forward(s) might be?

Awoniyi (£6.0m) seems to have had the most minutes in pre-season, with L Taylor (4.5) second. The latter’s currently in my squad as a makeweight.

        I'd stick personally.

If Neto doesn't fire, there will no doubt be others in that bracket who will so it's an easy switch, especially if you have 0.5 itb.

Going for No Mo Team, and the only way I'd do it is by having Trent, Robertson, and Diaz - given the assists to Salah is most likey to come from them, and Diaz for some Liverpool goal coverage.

Haaland is a wait and watch for me, and happy to have Kane as my (C) choice for at least the first 6-8 GWs

In terms of value and points ceiling at their respective price points, think this is the best XI I can accommodate.

      Mendy
      Trent - Robertson - Cancelo
      Martinelli - Diaz - Madisson - Rashford - Mahrez
      Kane (C) - Jesus

      4.0 GK - Tomiyasu - N. Williams - Greenwood

      0.5m ITB

Would do Kane to Haaland, and Mahrez to Mount, in case Haaland and Chelsea coverage look essential after 1-2 GWs.

      Any feedback on this please?

Well, Salah is no prime Barcelona Messi. If I were playing La Liga fantasy - I'd have had Messi nailed in then, as his big hauls are difficult to replicate by someone else - but that's no the case with Salah.

He's explosive, but not like KABOOOOM.

Diaz + 5m over Salah, the way I see it. Also you can only captain 1 - so 1 big hitter basis the fixtures, I'm comfortable.
