FPL

The best premium FPL midfielders for 2022/23

We pick out the best premium midfielders as we continue our look over the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) price list.

Having already assessed the £8.0m midfielders in a standalone piece, here, we switch our attention to those priced up at £10.0m or above, plus Jarrod Bowen (£8.5m), who is the only player in that price rung.

Our look at mid-price midfielders in the £6.0m-£7.5m bracket will follow soon.

With unlimited transfers allowed during the World Cup downtime and a Wildcard to use before then, we’re mostly focusing on Gameweeks 1-8 in this series.

Opta stats on the players featured in these articles are available in our Premium Members Area, where you can now get a full year’s subscription for just £2.49 a month.

MOHAMED SALAH

Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) was the top-scoring player in FPL last season, as he won a share of the Golden Boot by scoring 23 Premier League goals.

His tally of 14 FPL assists, meanwhile, was more than any other player bar Jarrod Bowen.

The appeal of Salah lies in his consistency: he has produced 230+ points in each of his five campaigns on Merseyside (see below). Combine that with Liverpool’s favourable opening fixtures, and it’s easy to see why 58.0% of FPL managers have already signed up the ‘Egyptian King’.

We did see a dip in Salah’s form in 2022 when he returned from the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), but even during that spell (Gameweek 24 onwards), he remained a goal threat and ranked second among all FPL players for goal attempts, shots in the box and expected goals (xG).

Averaging 23.6 Premier League goals per season under Jurgen Klopp, Salah is as close as you’ll get to guaranteed points in FPL.

SON HEUNG-MIN

The man who shared the Golden Boot with Salah last season, Son Heung-min, is available for £12.0m in 2022/23.

The South Korean international produced 23 goals – none of which were from the penalty spot – and 10 assists last term, averaging 7.4 points per match.

Notably, he was directly involved in 51% of his side’s goals when on the pitch, a league-high figure amongst midfielders starting regularly.

Son Heung-minTottenham Hotspur51%
Jarrod BowenWest Ham United51%
James MaddisonLeicester City48%
Mohamed SalahLiverpool47%
Ismaila SarrWatford47%

* minimum 750 minutes played

Now, despite that inevitable prise rise, Son is still the third-most-popular FPL midfielder, only trailing Liverpool duo Salah and Luis Diaz (£8.0m).

After Richarlison’s (£8.5m) move to north London, Son may be afforded a bit more minute management and perhaps the occasional rest next season. However, that should be put in context, given that it applies to most top players representing those involved in Europe.

As for Tottenham Hotspur, they appear to be heading in the right direction under Antonio Conte. In fact, only Liverpool and Manchester City have had a better 2022.

Furthermore, Spurs have a decent start, with the Lilywhites hosting Southampton, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Fulham during the first six Gameweeks, plus an appealing away trip to Nottingham Forest.

KEVIN DE BRUYNE

Kevin De Bruyne (£12.0m) produced 15 goals and eight assists in 25 Premier League starts last season to help Man City clinch the title.

After a slow start, the Belgian playmaker hit form at just the right moment, registering 21 attacking returns in 20 outings from Gameweek 17 onwards.

In that time, he also posted league-leading totals for bonus points (29), plus creative metrics like created chances and successful final-third passes.

It’s worth noting that De Bruyne massively outperformed his xG (+8.77) in 2021/22, but to counter that, he now has the prolific Norwegian forward Erling Haaland (£11.5m) to feed, which could potentially boost his assist numbers.

Pep Guardiola’s troops are the only Premier League team who avoid a ‘big six’ side in the first six Gameweeks, with their Etihad clashes against Bournemouth, Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest particularly appealing for captaincy.

RAHEEM STERLING

Raheem Sterling’s (£10.0m) move to Chelsea has the potential to shake up the midfield category.

The England international was limited to just 23 starts in 2021/22, but still netted 13 goals and assisted a further seven, averaging a very decent 6.4 points per start.

His attacking output during his time at Man City is also worth noting: Sterling has hit double figures for goals in five successive Premier League campaigns, with only Salah, Harry Kane (£12.5m) and Jamie Vardy (£9.5m) more prolific over that period.

READ MORE: FPL new signings: Sterling back on watchlist after Chelsea move

With pitch time looking more assured again, Sterling could potentially thrive in Thomas Tuchel’s set-up.

As for Chelsea, they face only one of last season’s top six in their first seven outings and rank third on our Season Ticker for fixture difficulty during that period.

OTHER CANDIDATES: THE PROS AND CONS

Jarrod Bowen was one of the surprise stars of the 2021/22 season, as he produced 12 goals and 17 assists in 34 Premier League starts.

As a result, he was one of just five players to break the 200-point barrier, ending the campaign with 5.7 points per match.

A price hike was always likely, then, and FPL managers will now have to part with £8.5m to secure his services.

Given that West Ham United face Man City, Spurs and Chelsea in the opening six Gameweeks, plus tricky opponents in Aston Villa and Brighton and Hove Albion, it’s unlikely we’ll see him in many Gameweek 1 sides.

However, he could be a useful asset further down the line, perhaps from Gameweek 7 once the Hammers’ fixtures ease.

Bruno Fernandes (£10.0m), meanwhile, has dropped in price after an underwhelming 2021/22 season, in which he produced a fairly modest 10 goals and seven assists.

However, with a new manager arriving and penalties potentially reclaimed if Cristiano Ronaldo (£10.5m) departs, it may be premature to completely write off the Portuguese playmaker, and it wouldn’t be a huge surprise if he appears back on the FPL radar before the year is out.

FPL POINTS PROJECTIONS

Our algorithm-generated FPL points projections for the 2022/23 campaign have been refreshed again in the last few days.

These will be further updated as pre-season continues and more team news information becomes apparent.

Thoughts on this with options to rotate Bailey and Solanke?

    Sanchez
    TAA James Cancelo Tomiyasu
    Salah Diaz Rashford
    Haaland Jesus Solanke
    (Steele, Bailey, Peireira, Williams)

Really like the look of this team, covers City both ends, triple Liverpool, Arsenal both ends, chelsea defence, and a few nice punts on Solanke, Rashford.

*The Case for Alisson and Laporte*

If the Salah & Haaland combo is one given

And if the Trent & Cancelo combo is the next given

We then have one slot of each to use wisely

With Citeh, the remaining slot is available to: Ederson 5.5, Laporte/Dias 6 plus the range of 7-8m mids, which really don’t look remotely appealing. Apart from one extended phase of Gundogan 5.5 20-21, mid-range Pep mids have been a waste of time tbh and I’m yet to see any evidence for that changing

With Pool, the only non-Salah attacker I have any interest in is Diaz. However, in pure *FPL terms* he doesn’t strike me as resembling anything of Mane’s power and poaching abilities. Now, that could change, but as of now, I think a double double up at the back is the shrewd play. This leaves Alisson 5.5, VVD 6.5, Robbo 7

    Ederson 5.5, Laporte/Dias 6
    Alisson 5.5, VVD 6.5, Robbo 7

Now in isolation, I prefer Ederson at 5.5 to Laporte’s 6 and Robbo at 7 (PPG) to Alisson at 5.5

But, if we’re talking combinations and VFM, the cheapest combined combo is 5.5 Alisson (who can match (nearly at least) VVD/Robbo for 1-1.5 less) and 6.0 Laporte who is able of scoring 4 goalsish a season and is nearly nailed as Pep’s LCB.

The 0.5m – 1.0m – 1.5m savings over VVD/Robbo does wonders for your team and is a solid “set and forget”. My only caveat to all this is that Robbo (PPG) transformed once Diaz was introduced and I wonder if that will even push him ahead of even TAA

They're both good options and I agree on Diaz. Allison might even get another goal.

yeah, is it true that we must use the quota for either side?

I considered this but his general trend has been to increase his goal contributions year on year - he is still improving and possibly hasn't peaked yet. He performed great under Conte so with a full season under him and on his trajectory, he could actually improve!

I'm still picking Salah over him though because I'm a coward.

Over-shooting the xG by such a margin surely isn't sustainable. Factor in the FPL price rise and it's an easy avoid for me.

I am pretty happy with this team. Not the best I’ve seen, but one of the most balanced. I can get to anyone in two moves, maximum.

The plan will be Son > KdB(C) GW2, whilst Gordon is on the radar as a cheap option to replace BrunoG/Neto from GW3. Finally, Wolves wing backs I’ll monitor. If unable to decide who will start, if Semedo is back, I’ll go Leicester.

    Alisson
    TAA Gabriel Dalot Ait-Nouri
    Salah Son(C) BrunoG Neto
    Haaland Jesus

    Begovic Andreas Neco Stansfield

Highest price point goalkeeper, highest price point defender, 2 highest price point midfielders, highest price striker.

4.5 defenders slots, cheap midfielders, and with Jesus can go to any striker bar Vardy. So yeah I’d say nice and balanced throughout. LOL

FPL isn’t all about picking from the top 6 teams.

Have to say it looks good although I would be inclined to hold onto Son as something else is bound to come up or rolling a transfer in GW2 is a great tactic as well.

How does Haalands arrival effect Foden? He won't be playing false 9 any more, which will move him further away from goal. It might also impact his minutes, but with Sterling and Jesus gone, perhaps not. He will now have a great target man to feed balls to - Thoughts?

Between him and Mahrez for me. Foden can play on the right too. Have to see in the CS as Foden didn't travel on the tour, but Mahrez did.

Grealish plays on the left most of the time, so I think it's between Mahrez, Foden and Grealish for the two flanks. Unless one moves into the middle.

Given Foden's missing the USA tour, we may not find out until the Shield unfortunately. RW is his best position, so if Haaland pushes him out there, I think it will be good for his returns.

Pep may not start the season with him though, given that he's missed pre-season. Whenever City players miss pre-season they tend to struggle.

"It’s disappointing, I would like them to be here. Our second season, when we ended up with 100 points, was the only season when we were all together. Since then it’s always been four players arriving and then a week later another one. We started those seasons with incredible problems. Every year we drop points." - Pep

I will need some advice from you about three options:
    1) Which defender for 5.0 choose:
    a) Trippier
    b) Zinchenko
    c) Cash
    d) Dier

Honestly I prefer Trippier with some free kicks and corner kicks with probably strong defence in Newcastle. Cash with good fixtures look pretty well. Zinchenko with good fixtures which has Arsenal but also he can play in midfielder so it can be next Lundstram or Dallas. And last one Dier which is defender but also has some free kicks and Tottenham looks very strong.

    2) Goalkeeper 4.5:
    a) Raya
    b) Sanchez
    c) Henderson
    d) Pickford

    3) 6.5 midfielder
    A) Eriksen
    B) Rashford
    C) Sinisterra
    D) Saint Maximin

I really like Sinisterra because in Feynoord he looks like a beast, but I don't know how he will looks like in Premier League. I hope he will be not next Depay. Eriksen Rashford can be good picks in offensive style Manchester United and last one Saint Maximin he's crazy man :D.

This is a good thread as I imagine these are the players that will enable 2 premiums and act as semi-differentials from the template.

I'm between ABC for defs, leaning B or C due to opening fixtures, but I think Trippier is in for a great year.

On B for GK, has an easy backup and is for sure their number 1. Will consider Raya if I get assurances he's still their guy.

Not a fan of any of the sub-8.0m mids - Rashy could be a great shout this year, but I'll believe it when I see it. JWP will be my guy once his fixtures turn on GW6

For me, Rashy, Martinelli and Coutinho all look a bit punty. I'd try to carve out an extra 1m and upgrade Cout to an 8.0 mid. Will be important to have one of those in your team for flexibility

I'm pretty much on this team right now. The problem is the need to decide on our route to an 8.5 mid in a couple of GWs. Who are you willing to lose and how many hits are you willing to take? In GW3 are you going to move Rashford to the 5.5 who emerges and move Coutinho to Mount/ Saka/ Mahrez/ Dias?

    Meslier (Klaesson)
    TAA, Cancelo, James, Zinky, Neco
Salah, Luis Diaz, Mount, Saka, Rashford
    Jesus, Brennan Johnson (Lyle Taylor)

Safe, boring, and effective. The missionary position of lineups really needed a combination of Mount and Jesus.

I really like it but I'd probably go Kane over Haaland for purely boring safety reasons and not convinced by Diaz fpl potential

I'm always keen on players with pen duty, so keeping an eye in Lanzini.

Fornals will get a lot of minutes under his belt this season, much more than Lanzini who will likely be used primarily in Europe.

RE Pens, Rice is likely the spot kick taker now Nobles gone. Which could make him an attractive 5mill option to some

For newcastle players, like trippier and botman, you can rotate well with andreas

The best 5.0 defender for the first 3?

    A) Zinchenko
    B) Digne
    C) Cash
    D) Trippier

Probably A) given Arsenal's early fixtures and OOP, but D) also great if you're looking to set and forget (I currently have both Zin and Trippier)

New draft, thoughts? 0.5m left in the bank

Who the hell needs a bench anyway?

    Meslier
    Trent, Robertson, James, Chilwell
    Salah, Saka, Mount, Martinelli, Bailey
    Haaland

    Klaasen, N.Williams, Taylor, Greenwood

Probably A. A would be even better with Chilwell or James but maybe you already have them.

The Chelsea away game in week 2 puts me off having Kane or Son from the start personally. Can always put them in later

Anyone care to have a quick look at my Sun team? My local barber shop do it for big cash I am not a sun reader.

    Cancelo Chilwell Doherty N.Williams
    Saka Coutinho Pereira
    Salah Kane Haaland

Guys, why does no-one have Walker in their teams? Am I missing something, he's still first choice RB right?

Rotation risk if City sign Cucurella

      1. bigwig
        • 13 Years

For 5m Walker is worth the rotation imo

    2. Tonyawesome69
      • 5 Years

I think it might be due to potential Cucurella signing.

For me I expect him to start the season at RB. He is my replacement for Chilwell if I'm not confident in his match fitness after ACL injury and switching from double Chelsea to City defence.

      1. bigwig

Cucurella is left back though so not a direct threat. Also 50m seems too much for him, even for City

        1. Tonyawesome69

Cancelo can play both LB and RB.

            • 13 Years

He's rarely played RB over Walker though

            1. Tonyawesome69
              • 5 Years
              1 year, 9 months ago

That's true. When fit he does tend to start at RB unless Pep wants a bit of height in defence and starts Ake LB or Stones RB. My point still stands though Cancelo can play in both FB spots

    3. CONNERS
      • 5 Years
      1 year, 9 months ago

Cancelo can play on either side and he'll play almost every game, that's the problem.

If Cucurella is used as per Zinchenko then Walker will play regularly, otherwise not.

Yes but Walker has very little attacking or bonus potential. 6 point ceiling ain't great and it eats a City slot which you might want.

I think I could triple up to start with Cancelo, Mahrez, Haaland.
