NOTTINGHAM FOREST 3-1 HERTHA BERLIN

  • Goals: L Taylor x2, own-goal
  • Assists: McKenna, Donnelly

Match highlights

Neco Wiliams (£4.0m) impressed at right wing-back as Nottingham Forest defeated Hertha Berlin on Wednesday.

The bargain-bin FPL defender was instrumental in his side’s first two goals, firstly providing the nimble footwork and cross that Scott McKenna (£4.5m) nodded on for Lyle Taylor (£4.5m) to convert from point-blank range.

Williams’ through-ball for Taiwo Awoniyi (£6.0m) was then fumbled by the Hertha goalkeeper, with Taylor mopping up to double his tally.

The 20%-owned Williams had earlier supplied another chance for Awoniyi so although there was no attacking return on paper, there was plenty of promise from the budget Fantasy asset.

On the opposite flank, Harry Toffolo (£4.5m) made his debut on the same evening that positional rival Omar Richards (£4.5m) was ruled out for up to 10 weeks with a hairline leg fracture.

“Omar has picked up an injury, we are still getting to the bottom of it. But it is unfortunate what has happened. It is not going to be a few days. But it is not going to be months and months and months.” – Steve Cooper

Elsewhere, Brennan Johnson (£6.0m) – heavily involved in all set plays – was deployed slightly deeper in the number 10 role of a 3-4-1-2, a tactical tweak that may be reversed if Forest can secure the signature of Jesse Lingard.

And while the sight of a £4.5m FPL forward scoring a brace grabs the attention, it was only a few weeks ago that Taylor was reportedly made available for transfer by Forest after spending part of last season out on loan.

£4.5m midfielders Jack Colback and Cafu were yet again paired in the middle of the park, meanwhile, but Forest did add to their engine-room options with the capture of Lewis O’Brien on Wednesday. First-team regular Ryan Yates (£5.0m) is also still to return from injury.

Nottingham Forest XI (3-4-1-2): Henderson; Worrall, Niakhate, McKenna; Williams, Colback, Cafu, Toffolo; Johnson, Awoniyi, L Taylor

Subs on: Biancone, Cook, Mbe Soh, Laryea, Mighten, Ojeda, D Taylor, Hammond, Fewster, Donnelly

ASTON VILLA 1-0 BRISBANE ROAR

  • Goals: Archer
  • Assists: Watkins

Match highlights

Cameron Archer (£4.5m) made it two goals in as many pre-season games with the match-winner against Brisbane Roar but whether he will become the pick of the bargain-bin FPL forwards is still uncertain.

It’s not just pecking order (third in line for a striking spot) or formation choice (a 4-3-2-1/4-3-3 would limit the opportunities further) but whether he’ll be even at Aston Villa come Gameweek 1, with the young hitman saying that a decision is about to be made over whether he departs on loan.

“Yeah he [Gerrard] said at the start that he’ll let me know whether I’ll go out on loan or not at the end of the Australia tour.

“So I’m going to try my best to impress him. Obviously I would prefer to play here but if I need to go out on loan to play games, because that’s what young players need, we’ll see.” – Cameron Archer

Archer, part of a front two with Ollie Watkins (£7.5m) in the second half, swept home his strike partner’s mishit shot to hand Villa the win, shooting off-target with two decent chances either side of that goal.

The first-half set-up saw Philippe Coutinho (£7.0m) playing slightly deeper as a number eight, rather than ‘in the hole’ where we’re accustomed to seeing him, so it’ll be interesting to monitor his usage in pre-season as we assess his FPL potential for 2022/23.

Formation choice might also be key for Leon Bailey (£5.0m), who again shone in a wide role in the first half. The Jamaica international was at least used as part of a front two towards the end of last season, so it’s perhaps not a given that his starting chances rest solely on Gerrard’s use of wingers.

And as previously mentioned in last week’s write-up, the acquisition of Boubakar Kamara (£5.0m) looks to have given Lucas Digne (£5.0m) and Matty Cash (£5.0m) even more license to push forward, with the pair noticeably high up the field against Brisbane.

Aston Villa first-half starting XI (4-3-3): Martinez, Cash, Carlos, Chambers, Digne, McGinn, Kamara, Coutinho, Bailey, Traore, Ings.

Aston Villa second-half starting XI (4-3-1-2): Martinez, Kesler Hayden, Konsa, Mings, Augustinsson, Iroegbunam, Luiz, J.Ramsey, Buendía, Archer, Watkins.

HULL CITY 0-4 LEICESTER CITY

  • Goals: Daka, Barnes, Fofana, Maddison
  • Assists: Soumare, Maddison, Dewsbury-Hall

Match highlights

After setting up a strike in last week’s draw with Leuven, James Maddison (£8.0m) carried on his pre-season form with a goal and an assist in Wednesday’s thumping of Hull.

Maddison delivered 22 attacking returns in his final 23 appearances of 2021/22 and was in eye-catching mood on Humberside, providing a peach of a cross for Wesley Fofana (£4.5m) to nod in and then bagging a fine goal of his own to round off the scoring.

The midfielder also whistled a direct free-kick narrowly wide.

It was only really the second half of the Foxes’ latest pre-season friendly that would have been of much interest to Fantasy managers, with Brendan Rodgers sending out mostly his second string in the opening 45 minutes.

The glorified reserves were in a wing-back system prior to the interval, with Patson Daka (£6.0m) on target, but Rodgers changed to a 4-3-3 after the interval with the big guns of Maddison, Jamie Vardy (£9.5m) et al sent on.

“We played two different systems and the players played the systems very well. We need that adaptability and we showed great quality tonight.

“The goals were very good, with good build-up play, but everything was connected and I was really pleased with some of the tactical things we’ve been working on. Especially, with the second-half team, some of the areas we looked to get into, with full-backs, with the no. 8s, it pushes us higher up the pitch when we can be more aggressive. With and without the ball, it was a pleasing night.” – Brendan Rodgers

Harvey Barnes (£7.0m) was also on the scoresheet but his strike was heavily deflected.

If there’s anything to read into the ‘first-team’ selection in the second half, then James Justin (£4.5m) and Ricardo Pereira (£4.5m) have the early advantage in the game-time battle of the attractively priced full-backs.

Leicester City first-half XI (5-3-2): Iversen, Thomas, Soyuncu, Vestergaard, Amartey, Castagne, Tielemans, Mendy, Praet, Perez, Daka

Leicester City second-half XI (4-3-3): Iversen, Pereira, Fofana, Evans, Justin, Soumare, Maddison, Dewsbury-Hall, Albrighton, Vardy, Barnes

WOLVERHAMPTON WANDERERS 4-0 ALAVES
WOLVERHAMPTON WANDERERS 1-2 LEVANTE

  • Goals: Jimenez pen, Neto, Podence, Kilman | Toti
  • Assists: Neto, Gibbs-White, Jonny | Ronan

Match highlights v Alaves

Wolves contested two pre-season friendlies in the space of 12 hours, the second of which was early this morning against Levante.

Bruno Lage named his strongest starting XI in the initial game against Alaves and there were some interesting personnel and tactical decisions to note.

The first was Lage’s setting up of Wolves in a more attacking 4-3-3/4-2-3-1, systems that the club have been working on in their training camp.

Another was the deployment and impressive performance of Morgan Gibbs-White (£5.5m) on the right of the Wolves attack, with the budget FPL midfielder supplying the assist for Pedro Neto‘s (£5.5m) strike.

You’re not wrong in thinking all this sounds familiar: Lage used a back four for much of pre-season last summer before belatedly switching to the wing-back system we saw for much of 2021/22, while Gibbs-White was heavily used in the friendlies before departing on loan.

And, true to form, Lage sent out his troops in a 3-4-3 in the match against Levante on Thursday morning, although it was a significantly weaker side on paper.

Neto, the sixth-most-owned FPL midfielder at present, had earlier won the penalty that Raul Jimenez (£7.5m) converted, while Jonny (£4.5m) – whose attacking threat wasn’t diminished by a shift to full-back from wing-back – crossed for the pint-sized Daniel Podence (£4.5m) to nod in after the break.

There were encouraging displays by Podence, Neto and Gibbs-White in a fluent Wolves attack, although Lage’s side were admittedly up against a side from the Spanish second tier.

“Honestly, I’m better than I thought. There were difficult times before but I finished the season well. I had more games than I was expecting and this summer I needed the break to get my knee back.

“Now I’m feeling very good and I think that my levels are rising and rising to be better than I was before.

“It’s all about confidence. It’s always difficult for a player to come on the pitch and think ‘oh it will hurt again’ but what I want to enjoy every game that I have.” – Pedro Neto

The fit-again Max Kilman (£4.5m) rounded off the scoring with a solo goal from his own half.

Podence and Yerson Mosquera (£4.0m) were both sent off in an ill-tempered defeat to Levante, meanwhile, with Toti (£4.0m) nodding in Wolves’ consolation.

Gibbs-White started as a ‘false nine’ in this match before being replaced at half-time.

Wolves XI v Alaves: Sarkic, Jonny (Lembikisa 77), Coady (Collins 59), Boly (Kilman 46), Ait-Nouri (Toti 77), Neves (Griffiths 77), Moutinho (Hodge 77), Dendoncker (Podence 46), Gibbs-White (Corbeanu 59), Jimenez (Cundle 77), Neto (Campbell 77).

Wolves XI v Levante: Smith, Mosquera (Lembikisa 46), Collins (Toti 64), Toti (Boly 46), Bueno, Dendoncker (Ronan 64), Ronan (Griffiths 46), Corbeanu, Cundle, Podence (Hodge 46), Gibbs-White (Coady 46).

Who would have Cucurella if he got his move? Unsure whether I'd bring him in for Trippier / Zinchenko

I may well do on my wildcard. He needs to be (i) bought, and (ii) bedded in.
      He should be very attacking.

Is Cucu really that much better of a player than Zinchenko?

Zinchenko hardly got a look in, might take a little while for Cucu to be a regular starter.

It's not as if they're desperate to rush him in, Walker RB and Cancelo LB is still a great combo.

Plus the delay in the transfer is meaning he is missing out on vital pre season prep.

Zinchenko isn't a left back, he covered there and did a solid job. from what i've seen, cucurella is much more dynamic in that position.

I think Zinchenkos specialty is in set pieces, which City already have plenty of options in. In open play, Cucurella is a cut above him and he seems a perfect fit for City's style of play.

Walker is a physical specimen and offers something very different to Cucu, but he's getting up there in age - a player that relies on pace like Walker won't be of much use once he loses a step or two. Once Cucu gets bedded in, he'll make the LB spot his and Cancelo can go back to his preferred RB position

City have two established fullbacks. Cancelo and Walker.

I doubt Cucurella will replace Cancelo the very first year. Players working with Pep needs to re-learn stuff, it seems, in their first year.

I think the original squad you have there is the ideal template - covers 6.0 and 5.0 def, 8.0 mid, premium mid & premium forward. If Ronaldo leaves and Rashy can get back to form, that could be my squad also. If not, will probably opt for Odeguaard

I don't like it, completely destroys your bench so you need to go with 11 sure starters (if there is such a thing). It's probably easier to do at the start of the season when line ups tend to be fairly stable before europe kicks in.

For me, depends on the forward. Kane is 100% guaranteed. Jesus is worth the risk although Eddie lurks. I wouldn't go one up with Haaland or Vardy or, god help us, Ronaldo.

Nketiah with 4 goals pre-season, along with his new 120k a week salary and number 14 shirt.
Looks like Arteta is putting a lot of faith in him, I expect him to get a lot of minutes.
Going to be very interesting to see how Arsenal line up this season, I know Mikel has been playing around with the 3-5-2 and 4-4-2 in pre-season. Could be an interesting pick with everyone going for Jesus!

I think that line up with Son and Nketiah is very strong! Though the double double in def is stressful for me. Are you set on big at the back? James and/or Chillwell to, say, Trippier and/or A N other could allow for a significant Martinelli upgrade?

          It's looking very good, though.

            Yes but I'm 0.5m short! 🙁

I'm not worried about doubles, or double-doubles. I don't believe it affects the points that will come out of the players, so no need to think about it. 😀

I'm not set on a specific 'structure', I just like these defenders. If I got rid of Robbo or Trent, it would be for Trippier/Digne, probably, rather than Cancelo, for example 🙂

Definitely thinking about upgrading Martinelli, but have to be convinced by someone first, enough to lose one of the defenders who I think are excellent already! Cheers!

Then you’d stick with Jesus. I honestly think it would be madness to have a GW1 draft with two Arsenal strikers and the much more likely need to upgrade Nketiah to Jesus would be difficult to achieve.

First RMT, any advice other than I need Haaland or Kane!

    Meslier, 4.0
    TAA, Robbo, Cancelo, Tomiyasu (4.0)
    Salah, Bowen, Maddison, Sancho (4.5)
    Jesus, Wilson (4.5)

The spots I’m not sure about are Meslier, Tomiyasu and Sancho. I think the first 2 are good picks at their price and Sancho is a complete punt but feels less of a punt than Rashford!

I don't mind these non premium forward drafts tbh... but I'm personally going Kane regardless.

Fair enough. I’d be lying if I said Kane hadn’t been in the majority of my previous drafts but I have a feeling Wilson is going to do well this season if he stays fit. At one point I did have a 4-3-3 to accommodate them all but the midfield just felt wrong.

it's interesting, it's one premium, but I'd expect the rest of the team to look better than this based on that.

      I guess it is effectively

      Robbo > James
      Bowen > Neto

which is fine if you are happy effectively perma captaining salah

You summed it up quite nicely. That was effectively my team a couple of days ago but was struggling to look at it with an attacking Wolves player!

Do you really think its worth getting Bowen and Madders for the early fixtures?

Yes they could be good over the season, but surely Chelsea and City have better fixtures to start ? Mount/Mahrez/Foden/Saka are all better options for the first 6 game weeks, in my opinion.

Thanks but whenever I pick Foden then Mahrez hauls and vice versa! I could get Saka but I don’t fancy double Arsenal attack since already have Jesus. Mount could be a good shout instead of Bowen but I’ll want Bowen fairly early so not sure it’s worth using a transfer on.

I think Maddison will be a great pick even from GW1, obviously just my opinion though!

    Thoughts here?

    Sanchez
    TAA James Dias Tripper
    Salah Diaz Maddison Neto
    Kane (c) Jesus

    Steele Andreas Neco Archer

Can do any of these moves after the 1st GW....

    Kane -> Haaland
    Salah -> KDB
Diaz or Maddison -> Mount / Saka

      Not bad at all
Id keep kane for first week - proven and in good form still. could easily swap to haaland 2nd week

I would bring in mount instead of diaz just for a range of teams differential in midfield

the guy from arsenal who can't take a throw in? He is one of the worst players i've seen, Djimi Traore reincarnate.

I know it is never just one player who costs a team, but he was such a liability at the end of the season.

Nailed for me. Haaland injured 75 percent of the season and a gamble anyway. Alvarez will get minutes with Sterling and Jesus gone and at that price can't really ignore a City forward, even if City do look a little light on goals this year

Too unknown how that will work upfront for me, in my mind there's even a teeny tiny slight question on how Salah works in a Salah Nunez Diaz frontline, add the rotation of Firmino and Jota when he's fit and I'd personally steer clear of 3

I would say it is almost impossible that Nunez scores more points over the season than either of them, and they are 1.5 - 2.0m less.

The question is more if Nunez scores more than the other forwards in your team. Or rather, more about the combination.

If Trippier can get 45pts from the 10 GWs you own him, compared to Trent's 65pts, while Mitrovic can only get 25pts to Nunez's 50pts, then it was worth getting Trippier over Trent so you could get Nunez, even though Nunez got 15 pts less than Trent.

I think Trippier is better than Neco, so assuming the other is bench fodder, with an earlyish WC, I'd go A. But it would be nice to tap into Neco's value somehow

I was at the City game last night, KDB was absolutely in charge in against a very physical Club America team. Looked ready to score big this season. Still not made into any of my drafts though. Thoughts on this for a big up top? Diaz is a place filler, could definitely become Cash or Perisic for some extra budget.

I assume you meant Dias? Could get confusing. I'm starting to prefer KDB to Haaland.. the more minutes Haaland loses and KDB gains.

Yes, I did mean Dias. It's definitely an option. There is a case that KDB plays close to 90 mins a week and Haaland is 60. Also a huge swing on the effective ownership when captaincy comes into play.

First RMT of the season - time to take FPL seriously again after a few years of laziness! Tempted to go Salah-less.

                                Raya (4.0)
                                TAA, Cancelo, James (Tomiyasu, Neco)
                                Diaz, Mount, Sancho, Martinelli, Neto
                                Kane, Haaland (Greenwood)

Would prefer Robbo to Cancelo, unless you're saving a spot to see if another attacker becomes interesting. I'd also prefer Son to Kane, and Son + Jesus over Mount + Kane, but I think most people have that slight preference, hence the 'template', and you should just do what you prefer! Not convinced on Neto or Sanco yet, either, but they certainly could be good options. Perfectly valid team!

I've never been so keen on doubling up on defence. I realise that's probably "old school" thinking given what happened last year, but that defence is pretty expensive to what I usually go anyway hah!

Son + Jesus is a good shout. I initially had Son in the team but went with Kane due to pens.

Too many gambles in midfield for my liking, Mount is the only proven FPL scorer there. Haaland a big risk.

Fair point about the midfield, probably one gamble too many. I'm not particularly convinced over Martinelli, but do want to punt on Sancho. Haaland could be changed to Jesus but I'm liking the Kane/Haaland captaincy combo.

Im seeing a lot of Jesus and Rashford in many teams

Im actually leaning towards Saka and Martial. Martial to Toney gw3 is on the cards if Martial doesnt impress. Toney could become Mitro once Fulham fixtures turns

I bet likes of Toney and Mitro would outperform all sub 7m mids over the season

Got a good feeling about Toney this year

I just think that Jesus is expected to impress. The others are not so much right now. So Jesus it is.

The others I'm currently not so interested in, but that could change. Saka will impress, but not necessarily in FPL for that price, especially if another attacker comes to Arsenal.

                                  A) Son Bailey Neto
                                  B) Mount Diaz Rashford

I oddly feel that A will score more. Son is just a machine and fixtures are good. I could also pivot in GW2 to KdB...

I think A if you're going to cap son a couple times like gw 10/11 instead of salah. Otherwise I think B (only cap salah) will edge it

                                    Without captaincy it's easily B

Tough to call, id expect Son to do well yes, but Bailey might not start and Wolves might struggle against Leeds - yes alot of maybes haha

Based on Neto and Bailey, id go B. I expect Man Utd to start off well and Everton look woeful so good chance Mount does well. Diaz away to Fulham no brainer
