FPL team guides: Arsenal – Best players, predicted line-up + more

Gameweek 1 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) is drawing ever nearer and we’re profiling all 20 Premier League teams before the season starts.

After weighing up what Aston Villa players had to offer, we continue our team-by-team guides with Arsenal.

You can check out our Nottingham Forest, Fulham and Bournemouth analysis in our Promoted series (articles that will be refreshed before the big kick-off).

Data in this article comes from our Premium Members Area, which you can access with a discounted subscription for as little as £2.49 a month today.

Arsenal were Champions League material for much of 2021/22 when it came to goal threat but there is a sense that there is still more to come: they had the worst xG delta (-8.16) and second-worst goal conversion (10.4%) of any side who finished in the top half last season.

Perhaps the acquisition of Gabriel Jesus (£8.0m) can help remedy that wastefulness. He’s had a flying start to life at Arsenal in pre-season, although it should be noted that he too has a bit of a profligate track record.

Wobbly defensive periods bookended last season, with no clean sheets arriving in the opening three Gameweeks or from Gameweeks 31-38.

In between, Arsenal racked up an impressive 13 shut-outs in 25 matches.

Keeping together a settled back four was one contributing factor: Takehiro Tomiyasu (£4.5m), Ben White (£4.5m) and Gabriel Magalhaes (£5.0m) started every fixture together from Gameweeks 4-18, with eight clean sheets arriving in this period alone. It was no coincidence that Arsenal’s defensive numbers worsened when Tomiyasu’s fitness issues began earlier this year.

But Aaron Ramsdale‘s (£5.0m) displays were also worthy of note. Earning rave reviews after his initial debut, he had fallen out of form somewhat by the time we reached the end of 2021/22.

OPENING FIXTURES

The best budget FPL defenders for 2022/23 5

Arsenal are actually top of our Season Ticker for fixture difficulty in the first eight Gameweeks, meeting only one of last season’s top seven in that time – and even that is a Manchester United side who struggled for clean sheets in 2021/22. Even with the strides made in pre-season under Erik ten Hag, question marks remain about their defence.

Two newly-promoted outfits – Bournemouth and Fulham – come in Gameweek 3 and 4, while two of the leakier defences of last season, Leicester and Everton, visit the Emirates.

Arteta’s side will be in UEFA Europa League action this season, however, which means they will have to get used to a demanding Thursday-Sunday turnaround between matches. That competition starts after Gameweek 6.

The September international break may be a time to reassess investment in the Gunners, as all of last season’s top four have to be met in Gameweeks 9-15.

I think Son's output will be compromised by Richarlison more than Kane's will

Ricahrlison isn't the type to sit quietly on the bench, I get the impression he'd be pretty sulky if he didn't get a regular level of playing time.

But Son and Kane (along with Salah kdb) are among the two most nailed nailed nailed players. Harsh on Kulu unless spurs play him RWB

I reckon this might be the season a Spurs manager actually takes Kanes insane minutes seriously. Imo Richarlison will start as striker for cup games, be rotated in heavily before and after the WC, and around February/March to prevent Kane’s biannual ankle injury.

I think it’s an astute signing in that he can come in for either of Son or Kane to give one or the other a rest.

I’m not suggesting he can fulfil Kane’s role, but he can play through the middle and have the team adapt to his style.

Of course he will need to improve, but Conte’s more than capable of improving players.

If Darwin scores in next friendly can see that bandwagon fully forming. But would he become a Salah or Haaland alternative or additional. If latter it puts even more cost pressure on team

                Dias 5.5 Stones 5 (Cancelo 5.5) 20-21

Just for the sake of argument, here are some numbers that might interest you...
PPM Last 2 seasons: (Yes this an FPL stat, not real life, but couldn't it be argued there's a correlation?)

Laporte '20-'21: 3.6 (16 matches, wasn't fully fit all season)
                Laporte '21-22: 4.8 (33 matches)

Stones '20-'21: 5.8 (he was an absolute clean sheet machine that year, had something like 16 CS in 22 matches after he took over for Laporte)
                Stones:'21-'22: 5.0 (14 matches)

                Incidentally:
                Dias '20-21: 4.6 (31 matches)
                Dias '21-22: 4.9 (29 matches)

I'm not trying to argue that Stones is better than Laporte (or Dias for that matter); it's just not as clear cut as people seem to think, IMO

Not quite as much competition this year so Grealish and maybe Foden could see more mins than last season. I think mainly Grealish LW, Foden RW but Mahrez could start the initial games with Foden's lack of pre-season gametime

      1. Swahealy

Just take a look at man City's line up next year, when did foden start RW, was mainly LW and Sterling and Mahrez rotated RW. Plus Mahrez PPG is 8 same as KDB. Grealish and foden are around 5.5

Of course trying to predict Pep roulette is a fool's game, but I see Grealish getting a ton of minutes this season. Pep seems to love him out on that left win; enough to let Sterling go. Full disclosure I have no plans of drafting any City attackers except for possibly KDB. I'm off Haaland at the moment based on expected minutes, I think

This is probably like the 100th team combination already... please share your thoughts/input on this:

    De Gea, 4.0
    TAA, Robertson, Cancelo, James, Neco
    Salah(c), Rashford, Martinelli, Neto, Andreas
Kane (switch to Haaland GW2), Jesus, 4.5

Wondering to go with haaland from the start and save the transfer, but I'm twitching thinking what Kane might to do Southampton at home and don't want to miss out on those potential points...thoughts?

Giving the Haaland niggle situation another week to sort itself out can’t hurt either.

That Haaland niggle will be season long like the last 2 seasons with Dortmund. KDB more solid option to start with

Hear me out guys and rmt please. This team can be 442 or 352. My thoughts are that Arsenal have good fixtures and are predicted to do well plus they have good value players. I'm staying away from Chelsea I do think preseason is somewhat important.

    Ederson
    TAA Dias Dalot/White
    Salah Diaz Sancho Martinelli Neto

      Like it.
Zin a wait and see for me, prefer Tripp or Cash for first couple of weeks.
Not sure can about booking in a transfer but agree that 8m mid slot is key and ideal for rotation

Ederson + Perisic or Mendy + James?

Neither for me, although I guess I'd lean Mendy/James if I had to pick one
There's always better value than Ederson, and Mendy, each season. And Chelsea look a bit of a shambles at the moment.
Perisic too much of a minutes question for me.
Is James going to play in a back 4? If so I think there are better options, given how Chelsea look atm, but of course that's just speculation/opinion on my part, not stats based as I would like to make any important decisions.
      Good luck whatever you decide

A has more minutes + Kane taking penalties, KDB a known quantity while we see what Haaland’s capable of and if he suffers from consistent niggles or not.

Why have Lingard if he’s going to be right at the end of your bench? If you strip that it’s 1.5 to spend elsewhere. And ditto with Sessegnon given Spurs’ fixtures.
