FPL team guides: Arsenal – Best players, predicted line-up + more

Gameweek 1 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) is drawing ever nearer and we’re profiling all 20 Premier League teams before the season starts.

After weighing up what Aston Villa players had to offer, we continue our team-by-team guides with Arsenal.

You can check out our Nottingham Forest, Fulham and Bournemouth analysis in our Promoted series (articles that will be refreshed before the big kick-off).

Arsenal were Champions League material for much of 2021/22 when it came to goal threat but there is a sense that there is still more to come: they had the worst xG delta (-8.16) and second-worst goal conversion (10.4%) of any side who finished in the top half last season.

Perhaps the acquisition of Gabriel Jesus (£8.0m) can help remedy that wastefulness. He’s had a flying start to life at Arsenal in pre-season, although it should be noted that he too has a bit of a profligate track record.

Wobbly defensive periods bookended last season, with no clean sheets arriving in the opening three Gameweeks or from Gameweeks 31-38.

In between, Arsenal racked up an impressive 13 shut-outs in 25 matches.

Keeping together a settled back four was one contributing factor: Takehiro Tomiyasu (£4.5m), Ben White (£4.5m) and Gabriel Magalhaes (£5.0m) started every fixture together from Gameweeks 4-18, with eight clean sheets arriving in this period alone. It was no coincidence that Arsenal’s defensive numbers worsened when Tomiyasu’s fitness issues began earlier this year.

But Aaron Ramsdale‘s (£5.0m) displays were also worthy of note. Earning rave reviews after his initial debut, he had fallen out of form somewhat by the time we reached the end of 2021/22.

OPENING FIXTURES

The best budget FPL defenders for 2022/23 5

Arsenal are actually top of our Season Ticker for fixture difficulty in the first eight Gameweeks, meeting only one of last season’s top seven in that time – and even that is a Manchester United side who struggled for clean sheets in 2021/22. Even with the strides made in pre-season under Erik ten Hag, question marks remain about their defence.

Two newly-promoted outfits – Bournemouth and Fulham – come in Gameweek 3 and 4, while two of the leakier defences of last season, Leicester and Everton, visit the Emirates.

Arteta’s side will be in UEFA Europa League action this season, however, which means they will have to get used to a demanding Thursday-Sunday turnaround between matches. That competition starts after Gameweek 6.

The September international break may be a time to reassess investment in the Gunners, as all of last season’s top four have to be met in Gameweeks 9-15.

Anyone else using bench boost GW1 followed by WC GW2? Spread your funds to 15 instead of 11, targeting opening fixtures. Hopefully get a great start then go for the standard big at the back 532 WC. Means obviously you don’t get the GW5-8 WC but you can still pick fixture proof team that can get you through to World Cup. Especially if you use transfers wisely. I like that it gets rid of the crappy bench boost chip early (I know players like to save it for double GW but 9 times out of 10 it’s fodder on your bench anyhow.

Fair enough. I know it wouldn’t be a popular tactic using WC so early. I’m just putting it out there as maybe something to contemplate instead of just doing what 8 million others are doing. Not saying I’m right and others are wrong, I just like trying to think different at times.

I get that. TBH I only thought of it earlier this morning. My draft was a very template 532 mendy chilwell James TAA VVD salah Rashford Neto Kane captain. Jesus + fodder. With plans to go Kane to haaland GW2. I’ve already activated the chip so no going back now. The worst that happen is I get roughly 70 points from 15, approx same score as others putting all their funds in 11ams then use a WC to go for the above template team. Knowing I still have weekly transfer to rectify any issues. The best that can happen is a 30 point gain on most, got rid of the crap bench boost chip with usual fodder and a great team going into GW2

Personally I think this is a terrible strategy and a massive cop out. Fair enough you're getting rid of the bench boost but the wildcard is the most powerful chip in the game.

GW2 you will still have a lot of uncertainty and guesses. The guys who wildcard in 5-8 will have far more information and probably a big advantage

            • 8 Years
            1 year, 9 months ago

I hear you. Though my GW2 WC would have many of the same fixture proof players most others would have. The pricing is so generous this season so I don’t think it’s that much of a risk. I’ll stick pick n stick with usual massive point scorers such as TAA cancelo etc so I’ll still have similar teams to millions of others who WC in GW6 or whatever thus no disadvantage. I’ll see if it pays off or not.

Mahrez seems to be the least likely to be rotated atm and he'd be my pick of the bunch. If you have Salah already and no other City attack I think he could be a good option in place of Diaz, but as always with City rotation is bound to happen, I'm still on Haaland atm as feel he has to start most games.

Yeah everyone seems uncertain of Baileys minutes at the moment. His preseason form is good though and Gerrard has apparently made a lot of positive comments about him. If he can nail down a starting position is he worth it in your opinion? It then allows the team to be filled with big hitters elsewhere. Posted current draft in comment above.

Very good options to rotate with, so long as you are prepared to bench the wrong one more often than not. Bailey goal and assist vs City on bench vs Andrea's red card vs Southampton for eg

Yep, such is the nature of the game and where luck comes in! My other option is I downgrade Cancelo to Walker and upgrade one of my 4.5 mids to Rashford then can have all 3 of the above options as my bench most weeks. Doesn't stop having points on the bench but probably less of a rotation headache.

Really impressed by Arsenal’s performance yesterday. Loving the look of this current team as a result:

        Ederson (Caballero)
        TAA Walker Jonny (Saliba, Williams)
        Salah Martinelli Neto Bailey (Andreas)
        Haaland Kane Jesus

Only real miss for me is that I’d prefer Son over Kane and I would’ve loved to get Diaz in, but love the balance of this and love that it has a playing bench! Leaving a Liverpool slot open for future changes.

This was similar to the threemium I knocked up but I had Botman over Jonny.

I like it a lot & if Haaland is totally ready to start season this team has legs…

I like it, obviously if City sign Cucarella this could affect the Walker pick but at the moment it looks good, I want that attack too and have made similar sacrifices in midfield in my current draft to get it.

I think Walker will start most of the first 5-6 GWs, Pep doesn’t usually start new signings immediately (exception being Haaland most likely)

If I was brave enough to drop Cancelo I could probably strengthen my current draft much more if I dropped to Walker, might do it before the season starts to upgrade my midfield, I want Rashford and currently have gone without him

Yeah I’d much prefer Son over Kane but the 0.5 saved and the better value in the midfield has me going for Kane over Son. If Bailey doesn’t start I’ll likely make the switch to Son and downgrade Kane to fodder

        Salah Mahrez Rashford Martinelli

I'm an advocate of having a squad but this is one too many.

Chelsea looking somewhat shaky at the back so I'd do James to a 5m.

Alt Nouri, who'll inevitably get rotated again, to Neco at 4m.

I can see Zaha missing Gallagher and Neto getting 130+ points this year, so that's another 1.5m saving.

Maybe then upgrade Bailey to another 8m? Diaz or Saka would be my shout.

Current draft with Salah, Kane, Haaland and Jesus.

          Ramsdale
          TAA - Dias - Trippier - Jonny
          Salah - Martinelli - Bailey
          Kane - Jesus - Haaland

Obvious downside is no easy route to an 8m mid if one of them pops off but otherwise seems quite safe
