FPL team guides: Arsenal – Best players, predicted line-up + more

Gameweek 1 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) is drawing ever nearer and we’re profiling all 20 Premier League teams before the season starts.

After weighing up what Aston Villa players had to offer, we continue our team-by-team guides with Arsenal.

You can check out our Nottingham Forest, Fulham and Bournemouth analysis in our Promoted series (articles that will be refreshed before the big kick-off).

Data in this article comes from our Premium Members Area, which you can access with a discounted subscription for as little as £2.49 a month today.

Arsenal were Champions League material for much of 2021/22 when it came to goal threat but there is a sense that there is still more to come: they had the worst xG delta (-8.16) and second-worst goal conversion (10.4%) of any side who finished in the top half last season.

Perhaps the acquisition of Gabriel Jesus (£8.0m) can help remedy that wastefulness. He’s had a flying start to life at Arsenal in pre-season, although it should be noted that he too has a bit of a profligate track record.

Wobbly defensive periods bookended last season, with no clean sheets arriving in the opening three Gameweeks or from Gameweeks 31-38.

In between, Arsenal racked up an impressive 13 shut-outs in 25 matches.

Keeping together a settled back four was one contributing factor: Takehiro Tomiyasu (£4.5m), Ben White (£4.5m) and Gabriel Magalhaes (£5.0m) started every fixture together from Gameweeks 4-18, with eight clean sheets arriving in this period alone. It was no coincidence that Arsenal’s defensive numbers worsened when Tomiyasu’s fitness issues began earlier this year.

But Aaron Ramsdale‘s (£5.0m) displays were also worthy of note. Earning rave reviews after his initial debut, he had fallen out of form somewhat by the time we reached the end of 2021/22.

OPENING FIXTURES

The best budget FPL defenders for 2022/23 5

Arsenal are actually top of our Season Ticker for fixture difficulty in the first eight Gameweeks, meeting only one of last season’s top seven in that time – and even that is a Manchester United side who struggled for clean sheets in 2021/22. Even with the strides made in pre-season under Erik ten Hag, question marks remain about their defence.

Two newly-promoted outfits – Bournemouth and Fulham – come in Gameweek 3 and 4, while two of the leakier defences of last season, Leicester and Everton, visit the Emirates.

Arteta’s side will be in UEFA Europa League action this season, however, which means they will have to get used to a demanding Thursday-Sunday turnaround between matches. That competition starts after Gameweek 6.

The September international break may be a time to reassess investment in the Gunners, as all of last season’s top four have to be met in Gameweeks 9-15.

      On your merry go round:-
Son beats Kane and that's without penalties.
      Salah no question
De Bruyne over Haaland ( injury prone )
      Jesus over Eddie
And BAILEY over every other 5.5 or 6 mil mids

        Interesting on Bailey, thank you...

On Salah, I agree but want 2 of Son/ Salah/ Kane and forward cover for the team I don't take, so

If Salah and Son, then Haaland
If Son and KDB, then Darwin
If Salah and KDB, then Kane

The extra point in not taking Salah opens up more options but this is the merry go round...

On Nketiah, I think he may be a differential this year as much as I think Jesus will shine and I have 3 Arsenal and no Saka in my team, so I am higher on Arsenal players than I have been in years... maybe that's a mistake, too.

I'm avoiding arsenal defence 1st couple of Gws.
I think Nketiah will share gametime with martinelli who has the LW spot for now whereas Jesus is nailed.
Also Firmino will prob start up top for liverpool over nunez at the start of the season

    Hello friends.

First draft and I think I am going without Salah:

    Raya

    Robbo TAA Trippier Justin

    Son (c) Dias Martinelli

    Haaland Jesus Wilson

    Bench Sanchez Saliba Bailey Dialo

Anyone else as stupid as me and swerving Mo?!

I’ll be totally honest, if you’re going without Salah you shouldn’t have a 4.5 in your starting lineup

Best ‘1 Premium’ & ‘Huge at the back’ team?! What do you think?!

    Ederson
    TAA - Cancelo - James - Robertson - Perisic
    Salah (c) - Mahrez - Mount - Martinelli
    Jesus

    (Gazzaniga - Bailey - Greenwood - Taylor)

0.5m left in the bank (to cover price rises)

    - Perisic can be upgraded to Chilwell with the 0.5m if he’s not fit in time
    - Flexibility to move Mount or Mahrez on to any of the other 8m mids

    Any changes anyone would make?!

I'm going off James now, thinking of downgrading to a 5m maybe Trippier. Think you need Spurs attacker in there...if you can't afford Son/Kane then try Kulu for Mount?

I think with the Koulibaly & Kounde signings (and potentially Kimpembe as well?!) - there should be no change James is a RCB, so should be nailed at Wingback; and attacking threat, as well as better CS potential!

Kulu is potential for Mount, but I think it’s a transfer waiting to happen after GW1 when Richarlison is back from his ban? And I have Perisic to (hopefully) cover some attacking points from Spurs…

Can’t get to Son or Kane without needing to downgrade 4 players 🙁

Chelsea are a watch and see. New defence will need to settle. I'm going without to start

It’s a fair point - think I’m happy with the ‘upside’ that you get from James; but not going to double up on Chelsea defence like I had previously planned!

Perisic will give me a little way in to the Spurs attack (and clean sheets)

But yeah appreciate the solid advice guys! 🙂

    2. Swahealy
      • 2 Years

I agree with double Liv def but city have no Stones or Laporte yet, Ake to partner Dias, I'd say a 4 pt return from Ederson and Cancelo GW1, West ham will score.
      Chelsea def not right yet.
Perisic might start might not, depending on match fitness, I'm holding out for Djed Spence ( another TAA in the making)
Best to put bulk of your money in midfield more early point hauls until all the defences have a few games under there belt

Yeah all really good points too mate!

I’ll inevitably tinker with the team over the next 2 weeks; but I think there is a lot of value at the back - not only for clean sheets, but for attacking returns too!

It only takes 1 goal or assist & some bonus to ‘cover’ any lost clean sheet points - and those 5 defenders are all flying full backs that have high ceilings!

Decent enough for a team without salah. Would prefer mahrez to foden but that’s just me. I would prefer Kane to haaland especially with Kane having the better gw1 fixture

I tried to make a balanced squad without 2nd big hitter.
Kane has better GW1 but Haaland has a far better GW2 fixture and also has a big ownership so I'm afraid to risk going without him.
Mahrez is perhaps indeed better pick than Foden, but I'm kinda guessing that Pep will play more Foden this season.
        Cheers and thanks for answering!

Why not, I see them all doing well this season. Plus it allows fsr more flexibility than sticking to one 12-13 million big hitter and perma capping him, wishing to score a double digit haul, while 2-3 8 million options can do just the same, even if not better than that.

Do we reckon Brandon Williams will be the first choice at Brighton?

Yes but have no idea why Brighton would want him as he always got beat one v one. I’d avoid

If he is at least he'll be a better bench player than the other Williams

Quite liking this lineup at the moment. Kane/Son is becoming more irresistible. TAA/Robbo/Diaz should do well but also nick points off the void of no Salah. After being burned so many times, am leaning towards avoiding Man City mid/attack. Sancho feels like he might have a good season and looks value at 7.5. It would be easy to change him or ASM to Saka by bringing in two 4.5 defenders and Ederson changing to Mendy.

    Ederson
    TAA | Robertson | Cancelo | Zinc | Trippier
    Diaz | Son | Sancho | ASM
    Kane

    Fodder | Fodder | Fodder | Fodder

Mahrez may still be on pens.

I think taking a punt on Bailey is a no brainer as he is flying in preseason & the first 2 games are probably up against 2 of the worse defensive teams in Bournemouth & Everton.

I am even throwing in Digne as well for the opening few weeks!

You like rotation, eh? Not seen double Palace around. I like Andersen & Olise, they could definitely be on the radar for me later. But is it too much benched money when you can't really play them GWs 1, 2 & 4?

Assuming Perišić doesn't do enough in the final Spurs friendly to warrant a start, I could upgrade him to Robertson perhaps, or... and you can blame Lateriser for this, my 3rd striker Broja could be Martial. Is X-X-3 suddenly back on the table?

This worked last night so if we play again like this in the final game then your all good

Wissa to Bailey & Raya to 5.0 keeper, possibly Martinez
