The best mid-price FPL forwards for 2022/23

We turn our attention to the best Fantasy Premier League (FPL) mid-price forwards as we continue to examine the price list.

Here, the focus is on those in the £6.5m-£8.0m bracket, with our look at premium options to follow.

With unlimited transfers allowed during the World Cup downtime and a Wildcard to use before then, we’re mostly focusing on Gameweeks 1-8 in this series.

Opta stats on the players featured in these articles are available in our Premium Members Area, where you can now get a full year’s subscription for just £2.49 a month.

FPL pre-season: Trossard hits hat-trick from wing-back role 1

GABRIEL JESUS

Gabriel Jesus’ (£8.0m) impressive pre-season form has seen his ownership rise to a whopping 60.4%, making him the most selected player in FPL at the time of writing.

Barely 90 seconds into his Arsenal debut, the Brazilian found the net, and given that he will receive far more sustained game-time than he was afforded at Manchester City, it’s easy to see why he is proving such a popular initial pick.

In his three-friendly run-outs so far, Jesus has been the focal point of the attack, a role that could potentially transform him into a 20-goal-a-season striker.

However, he will be feeding off a different supply line at Arsenal, in a team that creates fewer chances than City, so some caution is still required. Additionally, Jesus has underachieved his expected goals (xG) in four of the last five seasons, which tells us he hasn’t been a particularly clinical finisher in that time.

SeasonGoalsxGxG delta
2021/22810.82-2.82
2020/2198.72+0.28
2019/201418.49-4.49
2018/19711.46-4.46
2017/181314.18-1.18

Arsenal, meanwhile, face just one of last season’s top six sides in their first eight matches, when they visit Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United in September.

As a result, the Gunners sit top of our Season Ticker between Gameweeks 1 and 8.

ALEKSANDAR MITROVIC

Aleksandar Mitrovic (£6.5m) managed just three goals in 2020/21, his last top-flight season in the Premier League.

However, he returns having netted a whopping 43 in Fulham’s Championship-winning campaign – breaking all sorts of goalscoring records along the way – and is now playing under a more attacking manager whose free-flowing set-up plays to his strengths.

READ MORE: What to expect from Fulham manager Marco Silva in FPL

It isn’t just goal threat Mitrovic offers, either: he produced seven assists in 2021/22, the most he has managed in a single season during his senior career, with the Serb regularly dropping into midfield to help his team’s build-up play.

Fulham may struggle for chances in the top flight, but what they do create will go through Mitrovic.

However, a tough early schedule perhaps suggests we should wait until around Gameweek 8 before investing, as the Cottagers face six of last season’s top 10 in their first seven fixtures.

READ MORE: What can we expect from Aleksandar Mitrovic and Fulham’s midfielders in FPL?

IVAN TONEY

Ivan Toney (£7.0m) finished fifth for points among FPL forwards in 2021/22, producing a respectable 12 goals in 33 appearances.

As the season progressed, the 26-year-old hit his stride, scoring seven of those goals in a run of four games in the spring. In fact, in his position, only Harry Kane (£11.5m) and Cristiano Ronaldo (£10.5m) scored more in 2022.

However, there are concerns worth flagging.

For example, the departure of Christian Eriksen (£6.5m) is a blow for Thomas Frank’s side, given his ability to create, while Toney’s threat from open-play was limited last season, with team-mate Bryan Mbeumo (£6.0m) posting a higher non-pen xG figure (8.78/8.69).

Saying that, a penalty-taking talisman who is one of the first names on the team sheet is appealing, especially given Brentford’s opening fixtures – they face only one of last season’s top seven in the opening seven Gameweeks.

OLLIE WATKINS

Ollie Watkins (£7.5m) scored 11 goals in the Premier League last season, three short of his 2020/21 tally (14).

Now, with playmakers Philippe Coutinho (£7.0m) and Emiliano Buendia (£6.0m) feeding him for a full season, he should have little trouble hitting double figures for a third successive campaign.

After a poor start under Dean Smith in 2021/22, Aston Villa improved under Steven Gerrard and ranked joint-seventh for goals scored (38) from his appointment in Gameweek 12 onwards.

Above: Aston Villa’s goal threat (averages per match) under Dean Smith (left) and Steven Gerrard (right) in 2021/22

In that time, Watkins registered more shots in the box than all forwards bar Harry Kane and Cristiano Ronaldo.

For Villa, the opening four fixtures are pretty decent, with newly-promoted Bournemouth and Everton up first.

CALLUM WILSON

If he can stay fit, there is a decent chance Callum Wilson (£7.5m) will be one of the highest-scoring FPL forwards in 2022/23.

With 20 goals, six assists and 204 FPL points in 39 starts for Newcastle United, the potential is clear, but his fitness record is questionable.

Indeed, he only returned for the final three matches of last season after getting injured in December and played a part in less than half of the Magpies’ fixtures in 2021/22.

Notably, he was also absent from a recent pre-season training session as Eddie Howe looks to manage his load:

“Every day when we plan training we look at individual needs. We took Callum out and gave him some different work from the group. That was quite a high intensity drill early in the session and we didn’t want to expose him to that.

No one has ever doubted Callum’s ability. He is an outstanding striker, and he showed that coming back from a long injury and performing well at the end of the season. I would love him to have an injury-free campaign. We are looking for (15 to 20 goals) from our no 9, for sure – whether that’s Callum on his own or with Chris Wood. We need those goals from our front players. We believe they are capable of delivering those numbers.” – Eddie Howe

As for Newcastle, they certainly improved after they made five January signings, with only Man City and Liverpool picking up more points in 2022.

However, the opening fixtures are decidedly mixed, with Pep Guardiola’s side and Liverpool to come in the first five Gameweeks. That might be enough to put off any potential suitors, but if Wilson can stay fit, he will surely be a popular pick in Gameweek 6 once the schedule eases.

OTHER CANDIDATES: THE PROS AND THE CONS

FPL pre-season: Martial and Solanke net again

After being handed an opportunity to lead the line in pre-season, Anthony Martial (£7.0m) has potentially emerged as Manchester United’s first-choice striker. The Frenchman has been one of United’s best performers against Liverpool, Melbourne Victory and Crystal Palace, scoring in each of the three friendly wins. A lot depends on Cristiano Ronaldo, who has yet to return to training amid concerns over his future. However, after seizing his chance with both hands, Martial does at least look likely to start the season up front for Erik ten Hag’s side.

Kai Havertz (£8.0m) was mainly playing as a centre-forward in 2021/22 and, as a result, has switched from a midfielder to a forward in FPL this season. A fairly modest 12 Premier League goals and 10 assists across his previous two campaigns is hardly anything to shout about, but Romelu Lukaku’s return to Inter Milan on loan does at least boost his minute expectations. However, it does look like there are superior forward options available to FPL managers in Gameweek 1, and it may be others who benefit most from Havertz’s ability to create space in the final third, like Raheem Sterling (£10.0m) and Mason Mount (£8.0m).

There won’t be many takers for the injury-prone Danny Welbeck (£6.5m) and often wasteful Neal Maupay (£6.5m) at Brighton and Hove Albion, despite some decent opening fixtures. Elsewhere, it wouldn’t be a huge surprise if the likes of Raul Jimenez (£7.0m), Patrick Bamford (£7.5m), Michail Antonio (£7.5m) and Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£8.0m) enter the FPL conversation before the year is out, but for now, they all enter the season with a point to prove having mostly underwhelmed in 2021/22, be it through poor performances on the pitch or injury.

That leaves Julian Alvarez (£6.5m), who certainly impressed on his debut earlier this week, but minutes remain a real concern, even if Erling Haaland’s (£11.5m) fitness is still in question heading into Gameweek 1.

Haaland Foden

Call me crazy, but I’d say Grealish.

Pep’s system takes players a year to learn (see Rodri), and I could see him having a monster year.

Mahrez will always be rotated at City, even if he is on penalties for now. He’ll haul for you a few times, but I also see him netting a lot of 1-point “Pep specials” with 5 subs.

Mahrez and Rashford shriek nightmare gameweek to me Lallana, I guess you know the risks with the City mids but reduced mins or a no show for your second strongest mid is avoidable i reckon. From what we know at present i'd much rather have Martial or Sancho over Rashford.Tomiyasu over white maybe ❓ Not a fan of Mendy in goal but see the value for sure. Good Luck with your decisions bud. 🙂

For me, it's too unbalanced with 3 cheap mid like that and also Dalot, Zinchenko, and Walker hasn't prove they're nailed 100%, so threemium like this could backfire

I tend to choose either Salah or Son and not both
also Mendy might no be best to pick considering their defense so far, so maybe extra fund to upgrade to Allison or just play with Raya

Hear me now and believe me later...

Bowen is being MASSIVELY overlooked. A player of his caliber shouldn't be ignored simply because of a difficult GW1 fixture.

Bowen is one of only four players to break 200 pts last season. and yet, he's only a very, very reasonable price of 8.5m. He had TWENTY-NINE attacking returns last season and, from my memory, he was pretty fixture-proof. He may not have scored in every game vs MCI, LIV, CHE, TOT...you only have to go back to mid-May (GW37) to find he bagged a brace at home to MCI...the same damn fixture. He had a goal and assist in one of the CHE games. He had a PAIR of assists in one of the Liverpool games.

WHen you are in an elite group of four, and put up numbers that woudl typically price any other mid or forwad in the 10m+ price range...I don't see how Bowen isn't universally considered an absolute bargain. Will he match or better last season's total? Perhaps there will be a bit of drop off, but again, considering the bargain he already is now, take a pair of goals and assists away and you still have a player who has easily outscored the rest of the 8m MID crew.

One last thing, if I am successfully selling you on Bowen (which, honestly, I kinda home I'm not...I love low ownership), here's a strategy...if you are hellbent on saying "never plan a GW2 transfer"..but if you aren't in that camp, here's an idea - GW1 bring in Kulu and keep .5m ITB. Kulu another great differential for GW1 where Richarlison is banned and he's sure to start in a really nice fixture. Then, make the switch to Bowen in GW2, with Richarlison returning and Spurs perhaps in a tough fixture with Chelsea.

Again, hear me now and believe me later 😉

it's not that I don't trust Bowen, i admire his skill, but for GW1 it's a more risky gamble than say other 8.0 (cheaper) like Maddison, Mahrez, or Kulu and to top all that, West Ham still looking poor in the friendly so far, so maybe give them time and jump in GW7

Other scenario is to start with say Maddison and 0.5 ITB, and jump on GW2 if he's started firing

      1. @FuzzyWarbles

Im actually thinking the other way around. I don't put too much stock in preseason, unless its a new player/new environment like Jesus. But yeah, I want Bowen early rather than later because the one factor that could have a negative impact is the extra games from European competition. But, until those are well under way, I think he picks up right where he left off.

The other thing I like about him as well, he's the clear talisman. Other sides can put up goals and individuals can have big games, but Bowen has to be at or the near the top of the list for highest % of goal involvement for his club last season. Its not like a "Kane fired this week, Son fired next week" situation, or, which MCI mid will explode this week roll-of-the-dice. Nailed player, steady returns, and, given the examples provided, has to be considered pretty fixture-proof.

i agree, he's already in my team but i like your idea of going Kulu gw1 and then switching as i don't like starting with one of my defenders (Cancelo) against my attacker gw1, also have the same problem with Zaha ( who is someone else being overlooked and actually scored more goals than Bowen last season) facing Ramsdale

      1. @FuzzyWarbles
        • 13 Years

Zaha has been pretty steady his entire Palace career, but something about the loss of Gallagher, along with questionable opening fixtures, I just don't think I can look at Palace attacking options. I think Eze and Olise can really blossom and with both fit and in the XI together, might make up for the absence of Gallagher. But it can't be denied, Gallagher was a huge influence in that side last season. Maybe I am biased, I was an early touter of his fantasy appeal and I just enjoyed watching him play. But yeah, fingers crossed if I/we gamble on Kulu for GW1 that we wont kneejerk and set our sights on Bowen GW2 regardless.

interesting points regarding Zaha/Gallagher, but Palace bought a new guy Doucouré who's different from Gallagher granted but could also have a positive role in Zaha's play, he also has pens now which is a huge plus for his potential output, and yep if Kulu gets a brace gw1 you need to be ruthless and stick to your/our plans (after getting his juicy double price rise first of course 😆

Bowen and moreover West Ham have to prove they can repeat to me. They had a bit of a golden period last year, Moyes has done that before, can they do it again?

WHM definitely stumbled into their finish, but Bowen's individual numbers were still pretty dependable. Again, GW37, home to MCI, same matchup as GW1 this season, he bagged a brace. Yeah to see WHM finsih lower in the table, total less points, would be no surprise...and I think that plays a factor into FPLs decision to price him where he did. But I think Bowen can still produce regardless of how well the team entire are doing.

    Salah, Diaz, Martnelli
    Kane, Jesus, Mbeumo

    Kilman, Dsilve, Andres

    Who's nailed?

    1. White
    2. Saliba

White for now but a Saliba Gabriel CB partnership is what I dream of as they're both fantastic

White is right now, but Saliba is making a case. I still think with the investment made into White and Saliba still maturing, White is nailed for at least the opening month or two of the season.

i think Saliba will be, White did make a few costly errors last year iirc

Little different but old school. Dead Zone tell me what you think of my 3-4-3

    Ederson (Gazza)

    TAA Trippier Dalot (Jansson) (Nico)

    Salah Martinelli Neto Bailey (Andreas)

    Kane Haaland Jesus

too many cheap mids for me, having 1 8m guy beside Salah would be ideal, you can do that by going Ederson to 4.5, Trent to Robbo, Jansson to Patterson, Martinelli to 8m guy

Seems aggressive in pre-season. Hopefully with the World Cup around the corner and more minutes, he can get to his best.

On that note: Haaland + 4.5 def or Darwin + Grealish ?

maybe but i just find it hard to see him upping his output in a team full of superstars, unlike at Villa where he was clearly the talisman and bonus magnet

and to answer your question Haaland + 4.5 since i don't like Grealish lol

      Rodri

      B Silva KDB

      Mahrez Haaland Foden

Granted, some rumors of a B Silva exit, but for every rumor I read, I read another saying City don't want to sell. This isn't to imply that Grealish could earn a spot over, say, Foden...but as the roster stands now, there is still a bit of a guessing game even with Sterling and Jesus out of the picture. To me his 7m price tag is a bargain. If he is starting regularly, he's certainly worth 8m. So, why not sit back and see how he gets on first? Let's say I miss the early train and his price is up to 7.3m...I still feel like Im getting a bargain knowing he's playing regularly at that price, so I don't mind paying it.

That said, its Grealish getting pitch time in preseason, not Foden, so if I had to bet, I'd say Grealish is in the GW1 side. But I still feel like I need a run of games where he establishes that he is indispensible before I roll the dice.

Thoughts on the 3 premium team? Def looks a bit short. I could switch Perisic/Rashford for Cancelo/Bailey

    Sanchez
    Robbo, Perisic, Walker, Dalot
    Salah, KDB, Rashford, Neto
    Kane, Jesus

    Bench: Steele, Williams, Andreas, Piange

Thanks, that was my original plan too, just not sure how secure Martinelli is, vs Rashford who seems to have less competition.

Could also do Perisic/Rashford to Dias/Martinelli too.......

nice team, Chelsea are a shambles atm so yeah Mendy to Ramsdale or even DDG as a differential, i prefer Kane over Haaland myself to start. but i'll probaly regret not having the focal point of that City attack pretty quickly, and i'm not sure how nailed Ricardo is these days which is a shame as he was really good a couple of years ago

I love Kane to the core. But is he really worth it?

    A) Kane Martinelli Rashford Zinchenko

    B) Jesus Diaz Sancho James

Need to go to the punty territory to afford Kane in a threemium over a more safer balanced team

    Raya
    TAA Cancelo _____ Dalot
    Salah _____, _____, Neto
    _____, Haaland

    Subs: 4.0 Andreas Neco 4.5

    1. lugs

i honestly don't think there is much in it between the options, Jesus can get 20+ goals this season similar to Kane, Martinelli & Diaz are very similar the way they play and their actual output thus far, Rashford has hit 170+ pts twice in the last 3 seasons compared to Sancho who i'd be surprised if he can match that, James is way more explosive than Zinc but he's injury prone and their points might not be far off if Zinc can remain fit and nailed (big if)

A - go balls deep with premiums. We have the early WC to play as a safety net. Thats my plan anyway.

      Meslier (4.0)
      TAA Dias Gabrielle Botman (Neco)
      Salah Diaz Martinelli Bailey (Andreas)
      Kane Haaland (Archer)
