ARSENAL 4-0 CHELSEA

  • Goals: Gabriel Jesus, Martin Odegaard, Bukayo Saka, Albert Sambi Lokonga
  • Assists: Granit Xhaka (x2), Gabriel Martinelli, Cedric

Match highlights

The early hours of Sunday morning brought mixed emotions for Arsenal and Chelsea fans after a hefty Gunners win in Orlando.

Early on, Gabriel Jesus scored his fourth goal of pre-season with a cool chip over Edouard Mendy (£5.0m) to send his ownership beyond 60%, before contributions from Martin Odegaard (£6.5m), Bukayo Saka (£8.0m) and Albert Sambi Lokonga (£4.5m).

Head coach Mikel Arteta handed a debut to Oleksandr Zinchenko (£5.0m) at left-back, in the absence of Kieran Tierney (£5.0m), with Ben White (£4.5m) starting at right-back instead of Takehiro Tomiyasu (£4.5m).

It was another good display from young centre-back William Saliba (£4.5m), raising questions over which cheap Arsenal defender will be most nailed-on for starts.

“I am really pleased to see the way he is playing, the way he has adapted to the team, the maturity that he’s shown at 21 years old, carry on doing it. We will keep developing him, he has huge potential, he is already a top player and we have to make him even better.” – Mikel Arteta on William Saliba

In midfield, Gabriel Martinelli (£6.0m) continues to look exciting after a performance that brought one assist and a separate big chance creation, only to see Saka’s shot saved by Chelsea’s Mendy. Arteta says Jesus is fine after a first-half knock.

“Yeah he [Jesus] got a knock in the first half in his quad I think it was and it wasn’t very comfortable to continue and obviously we didn’t take any risks today.”

As for Thomas Tuchel’s side, Raheem Sterling (£10.0m) made his first start and there was a debut cameo for centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly (£5.5m). A back-four system was utilised here, although it’s still unknown whether this is Tuchel’s seasonal plan or just a tactic until more defenders get signed.

“The worrying part is that the level of commitment physically and mentally for this match was far higher for Arsenal than for us. I cannot guarantee we will be ready in two weeks. I saw today a team that had an idea of how to play to a level of physical commitment that we could not match, and also a level of mental commitment which we lack because we have a lot of players who think about leaving. I think this at the moment is obvious.” – Thomas Tuchel

FPL managers will be looking closely at how Chelsea’s final fortnight of pre-season develops, with Tuchel unhappy, at least one more centre-back needed and uncertainty over whether Reece James (£6.0m) will be a wing-back or full-back.

Arsenal XI (4-2-3-1): Ramsdale (Turner 76′); White (Cedric 76′), Saliba, Gabriel, Zinchenko (Tavares 46′); Partey (Elneny 76′), Xhaka (Maitland-Niles 76′); Saka (Marquinhos 76′), Odegaard (Lokonga 76′), Martinelli (Pepe 76′); Jesus (Nketiah 57′)

Chelsea XI (4-3-3): Mendy; James (Hudson-Odoi 73′), Chalobah (Sarr 44′), Thiago Silva (Koulibaly 73′), Emerson (Alonso 46′); Gallagher (Kovacic 46′), Jorginho, (Ampadu 73′), Mount (Ziyech 64′); Sterling (Pulisic 46′), Havertz (Batshuayi 64′), Werner (Azpilicueta 46′)

BAYERN MUNICH 0-1 MANCHESTER CITY

  • Goal: Erling Haaland
  • Assist: Jack Grealish

Match highlights

With Jesus, Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) and Harry Kane (£11.5m) amongst pre-season scorers, it’s only natural that Erling Haaland netted on his Manchester City debut. In the 12th minute, he slid home from six yards after a Jack Grealish (£7.0m) assist.

It headlined a stop-start night that revolved around heavy rain and lightning storms in the Green Bay area. After initially delaying the match, players were taken off the field immediately after Haaland’s goal before returning an hour later. As a result, the game was reduced to 40-minute halves.

The Norwegian forward already seems to have good chemistry with Grealish and he had the ball in the net a second time but it was harshly ruled out by the assistant referee.

“He’s good. He has to get better and I have to get better, but this is a good link-up and I like the vibe around him, so it’s going to be fun.” – Erling Haaland on Jack Grealish

Yet the main concern that FPL managers may have over Haaland is a potential easing-in period. It has already been suggested in The Athletic that Man City convinced him to sign because of a promise that he won’t be pushed to play when needing a rest. Judging from Pep Guardiola’s post-match words, he may not even start in Gameweek 1.

“The first minutes, he needs more rhythm and time but already he had 45 minutes which is good for him. We’ll see how he reacts to the niggles that he had in the previous weeks. After we come back we have long weeks to prepare every weekend game. In those two or three weeks we will get the best form.” – Pep Guariola on Erling Haaland’s match fitness

At the back, Guardiola opted to play the young Josh Wilson-Esbrand (£4.0m) at left-back rather than start Kyle Walker (£5.0m), which could deter managers who see Walker as a cheap alternative to Joao Cancelo (£7.0m). Especially if they do indeed sign Marc Cucurella (£5.0m) from Brighton and Hove Albion.

Furthermore, the absence of Phil Foden (£8.0m) on this USA trip meant that Riyad Mahrez (£8.0m) played 69 minutes here. Those going without Haaland in their initial FPL squad are surely assessing the credentials of both Mahrez and Grealish.

Man City XI (4-3-3): Ederson; Cancelo, Dias (Walker 57′), Ake, Wilson-Esbrand (Lewis 81′); Rodri, De Bruyne, Bernardo (Phillips 69′); Mahrez (Palmer 69′), Haaland (Alvarez 41′), Grealish

BLACKPOOL 2-4 EVERTON

  • Goals: Vitalii Mykolenko, Tom Davies, Dele Alli (x2)
  • Assists: Nathan Patterson (x2), Salomon Rondon, Vitalii Mykolenko

Match highlights

Just days after a 4-0 defeat to Minnesota United, Everton found a way to overcome Blackpool thanks to a brace from Dele Alli (£5.5m).

He has a long way to go until gaining the FPL community’s trust but the attacking contributions of wing-backs Vitalii Mykolenko (£4.5m) and Nathan Patterson (£4.0m) could be of interest.

“A five can be seen as more defensive with more bodies behind the ball. At times you need that, depending on your opponent. But when you want to have the ball, the wing-backs – and the width they offer – are a huge part of what you are doing. I was really pleased with that today.” – Frank Lampard

The pair combined for the opening goal, before both added an assist later on. Conceding twice to Blackpool proves why Everton defenders hold very little appeal but Patterson, in particular, could be a shrewd purchase.

“He’s a good young player and just as I was about to give him an opportunity last year he got injured, so it’s great for me to be able to play him in these kind of games.” – Frank Lampard

Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£8.0m) and Demarai Gray (£5.5m) sat out the clash.

Everton XI (3-4-3): Pickford; Tarkowski (Price 80′), Godfrey (Keane 46′), Mina (Holgate 46′); Patterson (Warrington 80′), Doucoure (Welch 80′), Davies (Allan 72′), Mykolenko; Gordon (Mills 80′), Dele (Dobbin 85′), Rondon (Iwobi 61′)

BESIKTAS 0-3 WOLVES (SATURDAY)

  • Goals: Raul Jimenez, Daniel Podence, Pedro Neto
  • Assists: Rayan Ait-Nouri, Daniel Podence

Match highlights

WOLVES 1-2 VILLARREAL B (SUNDAY)

  • Goal: Yerson Mosquera
  • Assist: Connor Ronan

Bruno Lage fielded two separate line-ups over a pair of weekend meetings in Alicante. Saturday saw a strong XI comfortably beat Besiktas, whilst a largely under-21 team lost to Villarreal B the next day.

The Pedro Neto (£5.5m) bandwagon didn’t need any more fuel but he provided some anyway, scoring his second pre-season goal to make it 3-0. His cheap FPL price practically removes all interest in forward Raul Jimenez (£7.0m), despite the Mexican’s friendly price point allowing sideways transfers after Wolves face Leeds United (a) and Fulham (H).

Meanwhile, with Conor Coady (£5.0m) assigned to play in the second match, Lage once again opted for a four-man defence. Not that it restricted the attacking performance of left-back Rayan Ait-Nouri (£4.5m).

Wolves XI vs Besiktas (4-2-3-1): Smith; Jonny (Lembikisa 86), Collins (Mosquera 86), Kilman (Coady 64), Ait-Nouri (Bueno 86); Neves (Griffiths 86), Moutinho (Ronan 86), Gibbs-White (Corbeanu 86); Podence (Hodge 86), Jimenez (Dendoncker 35), Neto (Cundle 77)

Wolves XI vs Villarreal B: Storer, Lembikisa, Mosquera, Coady, Boly, Bueno, Griffiths, Ronan, Hodge, Cundle, Corbeanu

ESTORIL 1-3 FULHAM

  • Goals: Aleksandar Mitrovic (x2), Joao Palhinha
  • Assists: Andreas Pereira, Harry Wilson, Aleksandar Mitrovic

Match highlights

Newly promoted Fulham concluded their pre-season tour of Portugal with a comfortable win over Estoril.

It was the Aleksandar Mitrovic (£6.5m) show, with two corners headed home by the Serbian, before laying off a pass for Joao Palhinha‘s (£5.0m) long-range strike.

Considering a lot of the FPL community’s pre-release drafts included Mitrovic, he has seemingly been overlooked ever since Gabriel Jesus arrived at Arsenal and was priced generously. Just eight per cent have Mitrovic, although the opening fixture with Liverpool will have affected this.

What will excite managers is the set-piece duties of bargain midfielder Andreas Pereira (£4.5m). For the second time this week, his corner was nodded in by Mitrovic, although it should be noted that he is sharing these with Harry Wilson (£6.0m).

Fulham XI (4-2-3-1): Rodak; Tete, Adarabioyo, Ream, Robinson; Palhinha (Chalobah 74′), Reed (Francois 74′); Wilson, Decordova-Reid (Harris 74′), Pereira (Stansfield 66′); Mitrovic (Muniz 74′)

  1. How big a loss are Jesus and Sterling to City?

I think some people underestimate how much of a loss Sterling and Jesus will be to the way City play and the numbers they contribute. Without pace in those wide attacking areas they’ll become easier to defend against. Teams can hit them on the break as Spurs successfully did twice last season without having to worry to much about being exposed if they lose the ball. I fancy Liverpool to win it this season

Perhaps he will, but Diaz is not exactly chopped liver.

People thought that Liverpool would miss Coutinho, but along came Mane.

I am surprised that they let them go, along with Zinch. But Sterling & Jesus weren't nailed last year and they did fine, they have enough back-up with Grealish, Foden, Mahrez etc. Still I think it will again be a 2 horse race between City & Pool

Yeah we’ll see how it plays out i guess but they were the plan B and they did that job effectively if and when things needed changing against certain defences and i don’t think City have that now, though with EBH onboard maybe Pep’s changing it up tactically and he usually gets it right. Mane was very good but I’d say most Liverpool fans would take Diaz and Nunez given the choice.

      I disagree.

City are always camped in the opposition's half. Pace in behind isn't worth that much to them. Jesus's work rate could be hard to replace but they still have Bernardo Silva and they're adding Kalvin Phillips too.

I think they win the league still. Liverpool are transitioning as well to playing with a striker and Darwin is just nowhere near as good as Haaland at the moment.

It could also be a sign of Pep putting a lot of faith in Alvarez or a change of position for Foden - still think its a bit of a worry, especially if Bernadp goes

Sterling will not be missed lad KDB and Co will still create the same amount of chances maybe more if u add the extra headed goals from Haaland, and 50% of the tapins that sterling missed will now be converted by better finishers.

It's amazing how confident people are about this. 5 up votes. I guess I am probably guilty of the same naiveté on other teams. I hope not. It would explain why top 10k is hard to get if we can't even work out that prime Diaz improves liverpool over aging mane. I watch every liverpool game. I wanted mane gone two seasons ago. He was God awful. Could not beat a man though he tried every game not realizing he had lost his initial accellaretion which was one of if not his greatest asset. He was a big part of us failing to do well in our injury crisis. No drop off from Salah or jota. Massive massive drop off from mane. Did not dream in a million years we could get 30 mil for him. He bounced back last year yes, but not to what he was before. He is a good finisher but no longer a good inverted winger. Watch him at bayern and see if he can beat someone. If he can't, what is he? A striker? We need someone doing what he used to do. That's Diaz. 5 upvotes? Wow. Scary stuff

I think City had more than enough depth in their attaching positions. I agree that the players they've let go recently in Torres, Jesus, and Sterling are pacy, wide players that have end product (except Torres on the end product front), leaving Mahrez the only one left of that profile. Players like Foden, Bernardo and Grealish won't offer the type of pace, width and goals as the latter ones - however with Haaland in the mix, they won't need to spread their goals across a plethora of attacking players. Will be interesting to see if they benefit from a front man or if having fluid players moving across the frontline was better

I think some people underestimate how much Pep knows about football. I'm sure he's aware of what he needs from each position. City will be standout xG leaders once again, I'm sure.

But if you want pace, Haaland has quite a bit of it. Here he is bullying Dias on the counter: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u7zjVSIS4FE

Don't think Jesus will be a big loss. Just use some of the other players in the RW position more often.

Sterling could be a loss. Depends how Grealish performs.

Pep has planned this in advance. You don’t sign Haaland and accommodate him into a system, rather you create a system for him. Haaland has so much pace and power and is a target. Getting the ball in behind fast to him and aerially will be the focus surely.

      1. Athletic Nasherbo

Did they just let these boys walk? Nah

It's not like they were too expensive for MCI. I think Pep wants to get more ideal players and spice up the approach. Plus they have two natural #9 these days, one is a Generational beast and the other is a Very Good player.

Grealish, Foden, Mahrez is plenty good. They won't be easier to defend with Haaland in the middle

Imagine if Pep buys Harvey Barnes last minute, that would explode HB 's value for FPL

I don't understand the appeal of Zinchenko. It doesn't matter if he's OoP. He'll be playing CDM and won't get attacking returns.

At the 5.0m price point you can pick up more reliable attacking defenders like Digne, Cash, Royal, Doherty, Trippier (who you already have)

He can play as a sort of hybrid 8/10. If he is ahead of the likes of Xhaka reliably then he is a great pick. I’ll wait and see personally.

Quite liking this draft, feels fairly balanced (other than the bench)

    Meslier
    TAA / Cancelo / James / Zinchenko
    Salah / Foden / Rashford / Martinelli
    Kane / Jesus
    4.0 Neco 4.5 4.5

      It's pretty standard but alright.

I think I like Foden the least out of all the 8.0m mids to start the season with. Didn't go on the pre-season tour and Grealish was quite impressive.

I'd love two 8 mids but at the moment I can't see how I can fit them in. Might change Raya/Martinez to Ramsdale/Meslier (in fact probably will). 7.5m for Sancho, with 3 pre-season goals feels ok as long as a half-decent Utd turn up. If I could get .5m in the bank I'd just feel that much happier about it.....

They overlap nicely though - when Ramsdale faces arguably his most difficult games against cry, LEI and mun, Meslier faces WOL, sou and bre. Makes a nice 8 GK games:

Peps record with traditional CFs is interesting

    Ibra - flopped

    Eto'o - flopped

    Alexis - flopped

Gudjohnssen, Pizarro, Iheanacho, Kayode, Kerrison, Bony - flopped

Villa - OK but would expect more
Aguero - success but not signed by Guardiola

    Lewandowski - success

Might be wrong here, but isn’t Haaland younger than all the others were when Pep signed them? Seems to be more willing to adapt to the system than Ibra, and Pep seems more willing to adapt the system to him than with some of the others.

Not sure you grasp what a "flop" is.

Zlatan got 22 goals and 13 assists in one season under Guardiola.
Eto'o got 36 goals and 9 assists in 52 games.
Sanchez got 14 goals and 7 assists in 41 games (and not as the main striker)
Villa got 32 goals and 15 assists in 76 games.

Those aren't flops. Not even close.

Think about how many of those high profile ones were actually signed while Pep was coach though. Alexis Sanchez was more of a winger and played his best stuff wide.

      Of the high profile ones:
Ibra - Signed but didn't fit Barca system
      Villa - Great for Barca
Aguero - Had to adapt but a big success
      Lewandowski - Outstanding

      That's a pretty good record.

Personally like Sterling in your Team - good differential from the Template Teams
B.Silva looks iffy and based on Gerrard's comment on Bailey - he may have to proof further in next 2 weeks to get spot in starting XI.

I know its Template suggestion however I feel one of TAA or Robertson needs a place in your Team.
Perisic is good however he will have his minutes managed - B.Davies signed a new contract today

Shift in formation very unlikely given 3-4-3 has been Contes formation for more than 5 years at every club he’s been at. Definitely think there’ll be more rotation though, especially given wb is an intense position and Perisic is 33 already.

Yeah chelsea is awful atm, but james could have still get some assist there
And they don’t play arsenal each week 😉
So you say meslier over ederson to fund bailey to martinelli?

                  yes/no
Meslier over Ederson, but I would want a spurs attacker in there
Spurs will score more goals with Rich/perisic there

I really like Mitrovic and I don’t think he is the same player as when they were last in the PL. He has improved so much. Hard to tell if he can do it against tougher opposition but I reckon he could bully some of the mid to lower table teams.

Arsenal we’re pretty ruthless against Che, I know it’s only pre-season, but it was a pretty heavy defeat.

Haven’t seen you on here in a long time Christina. Used to date a swell girl called Christina.

Don’t fancy Everton players at all this season, I’ve currently Neto in the 5.5m slot. But I have 0.5m in the bank so he could become Lingard.

I think I'm getting closer. Happy with this one and it is safe and risky enough for me.

    Sanchez 4.0
TAA Cancelo Digne Dalot N. Williams
    Salah Diaz Mahrez Martinelli Andreas
    Kane Jesus Plange

I don't learn from my mistakes apparently regarding Mahrez but I genuinely think he's lost two of his direct competitors for his role and he will play a lot more.

I did a poll earlier today of:

Son, Mitrovic, Grealish vs Kane, Martinelli, Mahrez

And the second option won out. I think it's slightly better because of the price points it offers too. Lots of options at each of those price points.

I’d probable pick B to out of that line up too. I think the best way to get Son is just to play Jesus up top until someone emerges. Mitro could do very well but his opening fixtures puts me off.

Dont forget that if he's slow out of the blocks, the 11.5 is a single transfer to Haaland

What is your problem with Diaz? He didn't have a bad record for Liverpool last year - 4 goals in 13 games of which he started around 8 I think. And the first half of the year for Porto he scored 14 in 18 league games.

He is a top talent and is fairly nailed too.

The other two I concede could be rotation risks but no risk, no reward!

Luckily for you, I think now is as good a time as any to go for Mahrez with Foden's lack of preseason.

I'm also considering a dabble with Digne. Someone mentioned Everton's poor defending of corners yesterday

RIGHT - I'm going to stop titting around with my team for at least 30 minutes!

    Ramsdale
    TAA Dias Tripper Zinchenko
    Salah Mahrez Neto Diaz
    Jesus Kane

    Meslier N. Williams Andreas Greenwood

It's impossible to improve upon 🙂

I want to say yes but think now that he's had a season to settle Grealish might really benefit.

Assuming that KDB & Haaland take up two of the 5 spots means Foden, Grealish, Bernardo, Mahrez, Gundogan will split the other 3 with palmer getting some cameos

      No, looks good.

Barca may have stolen Kounde so right now I am thinking James/Chilwell aren't good value with possible of clean sheets given how poor their def has been in pre-season.

Wanted Neto from the start and now beginning to feel I can't not have him so have pulled back on Def for this 3-5-2 with the Saliba, Neco, AN rotating.

    Raya (4.0)

    Cancelo-Trent-Saliba (Ait Nouri-Neco)

    Salah-Diaz-Sancho-Martinelli-Neto

    Kane-Jesus (4.5)

Been on Haaland for a long time but just drafted this and it feels good and balanced

    Sanchez (Steele)
    TAA, James, Cancelo, Perisic (N.Williams)
    Salah, Luis-Diaz, KDB, Neto (Andreas)
    Jesus, Johnson (Taylor)

Thoughts? Johnson a bit of a punt and a big step up from the Championship but he scored 16 and assisted 10 last season, so could represent good value at 6m.

prefer Haaland with 0.5m saving our KdB
6m mf's are better than the 6m strikers

Mitrovic scored nearly triple the number of Johnson's goals and costs 0.5m more.

You can easily save that little bit extra from either Perisic or James.

Dont see Walker playing consistently - Like the punchy front line but it's a lot of money for two forwards (traditionally a low scoring area)

I don't hate it, but you'll be asking a lot from Dalot, Walker, Martinelli and Bailey - all of whose minutes are a bit up in the air.
