FPL team guides: Brentford – Best players, predicted line-up + more

Gameweek 1 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) is drawing ever nearer and we’re profiling all 20 Premier League teams before the season starts.

After weighing up what Arsenal and Aston Villa players have to offer, we continue our team-by-team guides with Brentford.

You can check out our Nottingham Forest, Fulham and Bournemouth analysis in our Promoted series (articles that will be refreshed before the big kick-off).

Data in this article comes from our Premium Members Area, which you can access with a discounted subscription for as little as £2.49 a month today.

FPL pre-season lessons:

LAST SEASON: ATTACK

TotalRank v other Premier League clubs
Goals scored4811th
Shots44213th
Shots in the box3177th
Shots on target147=11th
Big chances679th
Expected goals (xG)52.3911th

The attacking statistics for Brentford very much rank in mid-table, which isn’t bad for a newly-promoted side making their Premier League debut.

However, their year splits into life with and without Christian Eriksen (£6.5m). His Gameweek 28 debut followed a terrible run of nine defeats from 11 matches, totalling just four points and six goals in those months.

Until Gameweek 27, the Bees were down in 17th place for total shots and 15th for goals scored.

Eriksen’s arrival sparked a late-season revival of seven wins and 21 goals but, now that the Dane has departed for Manchester United, we don’t know how good Brentford will be in their second campaign.

Headline-making victories came against Arsenal on the opening Friday, plus a 4-1 win away to Chelsea. Also impressive was doing the double over West Ham United.

LAST SEASON: DEFENCE

TotalRank v other Premier League clubs
Goals conceded5612th
Clean sheets9=10th
Shots conceded50310th
Shots in the box conceded3058th
Shots on target conceded17913th
Big chances conceded69=10th
Expected goals conceded (xGC)55.148th

Again, Brentford’s numbers line up slightly better than their 13th-placed finish.

Most of their season was played with a back-three system, which might explain why they ranked eighth-best for conceding shots inside the penalty area. They were seventh-best at allowing attempts from the left flank but 13th for those down the right.

Three of their nine clean sheets arrived within the first five outings, catching FPL managers off-guard. Of course, those who then bought a defensive asset had to wait until Gameweeks 13 and 25 for the next pair.

From Brentford defenders, only Chelsea scored more than their 13 – which includes the three of reclassified Sergi Canos (£5.0m). Add this to defensive assists and they are the best outside of last season’s top four (25).

Pontus Jansson (£4.5m) lead the way for matches started, with 37, while Rico Henry (£4.5m) and Ethan Pinnock (£4.5m) follow with 33 and 32.

OPENING FIXTURES

The opening run of Brentford fixtures is very generous, avoiding all of last season’s top four until Gameweek 12.

In fact, starting from Gameweek 3, they top our Season Ticker all the way up to Gameweek 16.

Both nailed but don’t see the appeal when you can have trippier, walker, cash etc for the same price

Walker probably won't be nailed. Trippier and Cash are playing for teams with worse defence, at least on paper. I think it's quite balanced and was a right decision by FPL to price them the same.

I agree, I just wouldn’t go there myself, they couldn’t have been 4.5 otherwise they’d have been an easy pick especially if spurs are as strong as people think they could be

Because he has scored 230 in every single season in fpl. No one else currently in the game apart from CR7 has done that more than once.

He is arguably the best season starter in fpl history and has Fulham in GW1.

Kane last season proved a run of poor form doesn’t need to be permanent.

After ACFON he played 60 mins + 10 times - in that time he scored 6 and assisted 4. People forget his “poor form” had a lot to do with being foster out given the quadruple chase.

Sure, he was great, but he is getting older, opponents know him better, Liverpool midfield with zero creativity etc.

Diaz + 5 million sounds better for me. Especially with other good captaincy options.

He’s 30 so pretty much at his peak - he’s a couple of months younger then Mane who we both agree is still immense.

The midfield is the same as the May which got him the top goal scorer and assister last year so not sure where the creativity concern comes from.

He’s been ripping it up for 5 years now so the opponents knew everything they could last year and still couldn’t stop him.

Fair enough if you wanna look elsewhere but you asked for evidence and I’d argue there’s an awful lot of it!

I’m not really sure where this has come from about his age.

Of the top 8 scorers in terms of goals last season only Kane and Jota were younger in years.

Son is the same age, KDB is older and CR7 and Vardy are much older.

So if we discount Salah we also need to discount those 4 based on age.

Also if those with Salah are wrong we can sell him and buy any player in the game. If those going Salahless are wrong you’ve got a headache.

230+ in the last five seasons is simply ridiculous - that justifies his price alone.

He's surely one of the best fantasy assets we've seen for years. A midfielder that gets the goals and assists of a forward, plays for a team that always scores, and can put 4 past anyone. And on pens. Nearly guaranteed 90 mins a game (we'll see with the 5 subs, though).

      He's a monster.

He always starts the season well especially against promoted teams. True, he was poor after Afcon by his standards but now with a ling break he is probably gonna be back with a bang. If not, easy switch to son or kdb..

It's almost exactly the same as my Haaland draft (Sanchez to Ramsdale / Trips to Ait-Nouri).

Ultimately I've gone with my Son draft though to start the season

Yep looks good - exact same as fine but for Haaland, Tripps, Martinelli to Kane, Dalot, Rashford

For 11.5 combined, do you guys like:

    1. Neto and Diaz
    2. Rashford and Trippier

1 is a safer bet but Rashford and Trippier are trying to buy low on some potentially under priced assets.

    Thoughts on this draft?

    Ramsdale
    TAA Cancelo James (Dalot/White/Ait Nouri)
    Salah Diaz Rashford Neto
    Haaland Jesus

    4.0 Bailey N. Williams Archer

      Nice team.

Ait-Nouri for me to start the season. Nice fixtures (aside from game 3) and Wolves are solid enough.

      Dalot a close 2nd

Who is the best 8.0m midfielder? At present I have Mount.
    My midfield is
    Salah, Mount, Guimaraes, Neto, (Ramsey)

The rest of my squad is
    Sanchez (Forster)
    TAA, Cancelo, Zinchenko,, Chilwell, (N.Williams)
    Kane, Jesus, (Greenwood)
    Nothing left in the bank!!

    All replies gratefully appreciated!!

Any thoughts on this team please?

    Sanchez - Steele
    TAA - Cancelo - Coufal - White - Williams
    Diaz - Sancho - Maddison - Bailey - Andreas
    Kane - Haaland - Jesus

    Also, Coufal or Dalot?

    Thanks in advance

First mention of Coufal on here. If you can ride out the MCI game, I think he's as good a 4.5 as anyone.
I'd want one of my premiums in midfield I think.
Either Kane & KdB or Haaland & Son.
