FPL team guides: Brentford – Best players, predicted line-up + more

Gameweek 1 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) is drawing ever nearer and we’re profiling all 20 Premier League teams before the season starts.

After weighing up what Arsenal and Aston Villa players have to offer, we continue our team-by-team guides with Brentford.

You can check out our Nottingham Forest, Fulham and Bournemouth analysis in our Promoted series (articles that will be refreshed before the big kick-off).

Data in this article comes from our Premium Members Area, which you can access with a discounted subscription for as little as £2.49 a month today.

FPL pre-season lessons:

LAST SEASON: ATTACK

TotalRank v other Premier League clubs
Goals scored4811th
Shots44213th
Shots in the box3177th
Shots on target147=11th
Big chances679th
Expected goals (xG)52.3911th

The attacking statistics for Brentford very much rank in mid-table, which isn’t bad for a newly-promoted side making their Premier League debut.

However, their year splits into life with and without Christian Eriksen (£6.5m). His Gameweek 28 debut followed a terrible run of nine defeats from 11 matches, totalling just four points and six goals in those months.

Until Gameweek 27, the Bees were down in 17th place for total shots and 15th for goals scored.

Eriksen’s arrival sparked a late-season revival of seven wins and 21 goals but, now that the Dane has departed for Manchester United, we don’t know how good Brentford will be in their second campaign.

Headline-making victories came against Arsenal on the opening Friday, plus a 4-1 win away to Chelsea. Also impressive was doing the double over West Ham United.

LAST SEASON: DEFENCE

TotalRank v other Premier League clubs
Goals conceded5612th
Clean sheets9=10th
Shots conceded50310th
Shots in the box conceded3058th
Shots on target conceded17913th
Big chances conceded69=10th
Expected goals conceded (xGC)55.148th

Again, Brentford’s numbers line up slightly better than their 13th-placed finish.

Most of their season was played with a back-three system, which might explain why they ranked eighth-best for conceding shots inside the penalty area. They were seventh-best at allowing attempts from the left flank but 13th for those down the right.

Three of their nine clean sheets arrived within the first five outings, catching FPL managers off-guard. Of course, those who then bought a defensive asset had to wait until Gameweeks 13 and 25 for the next pair.

From Brentford defenders, only Chelsea scored more than their 13 – which includes the three of reclassified Sergi Canos (£5.0m). Add this to defensive assists and they are the best outside of last season’s top four (25).

Pontus Jansson (£4.5m) lead the way for matches started, with 37, while Rico Henry (£4.5m) and Ethan Pinnock (£4.5m) follow with 33 and 32.

OPENING FIXTURES

The opening run of Brentford fixtures is very generous, avoiding all of last season’s top four until Gameweek 12.

In fact, starting from Gameweek 3, they top our Season Ticker all the way up to Gameweek 16.

Is it plausible to play one of Neco or Andreas every week to afford 3 premiums?

You need to look at the opportunity cost of the premium and Neto/Andreas.

U could. People are making light of the value Andreas is providing. He will get returns playing as the number 10 and is on partial set pieces. 120-130 points are doable for him. But u also only need that if u want TAA, Jesus, and Cancelo as well as the 3 premiums.

In my planner, I find myself starting Andreas perhaps one game in four to cover nasty fixtures. Wouldn't want to play him more than that though.

I think people underestimate how often you actually need to use your 1st sub….especially if you have a few risky starting players. There’s injuries and possibly monkey-pox to deal with as well.
Saying you need to start of them means you’ll be playing both for many games

To answer your question I think Andreas is fine. I agree with the comment earlier on his scoring potential…number 10 that plays for the most likely promoted team to stay up, who are also attacking and have a good number 9…there’s a lot to like.

Not too many games where I’d have confidence in Neco though. I actually prefer Pattison tbh

I would only be confident in him in home games against bottom-half teams.
That’s only 1 in 4. I do acknowledge he is attacking and a wing-back so will get assists in games I’m not confident in…I just wouldn’t know which games they are

5 subs increases the 1pt run on chances and decreases subs likelihood though I'm assuming.

    Henderson
    Dalot / Cancelo / Trippier

    Kane / Jesus / Haaland

Could be good 1st couple of game weeks, but I wouldn't go for united assets just yet. They all look good preseason, playing like a team, and I was all set on Sancho, but if Ronaldo stays it's a no go he seems to suffocate Bruno, Rashford and Sancho

    4. Wrong Captain Choice - Ag i…

Your'e bench is the major issue for me. Better 4.5 options than Colback he is very unlikely to start. Tomiyasu is injured and has had no proper preseason, plus he might struggle to get back in the side. It is important you have a decent 4.5m defender/midfielder to rotate with Rashford/Dalot/Trippier.

In gameweek three all three of those players will have a difficult fixture. Ideally you would like a maximum of two players with a difficult fixture in any given gameweek. When factoring in injuries etc and the strength of your bench.

Andreas Pereira looks a much better option.

Three premiums seems to be in vogue at the moment, just can’t see the appeal of Neto types personally, I guess this weekend will see some big changes with the last friendlies.

l agree on Neto. Someone was trying to convince on here that Jimenez makes Neto's appeal better out of position. But I think that is worse Neto is not a striker and needs a focal point to work off.
Instead I decided to gamble on Bailey for the first three gameweeks. With a midfield of Salah-Bailey-Rashford-Grealish (Andreas).

Vogue or not, I've modelled a ton of threemium drafts and not been satisfied with any of them. Two and Jesus gives much better balance, imo. I've been quite happy with Neto as the 11th man in my Starting line-up but this latest news has thrown me a bit of a curveball. Bailey and Andreas could be accidental saviours in the early weeks, I don't know.

I'm worried Ronaldo back will ruin the cohesion built over pre-season. The only pro is the new manager bounce.

For Neto, with Jimenez out and the fact Wolves struggle to score, I prefer a similarly priced defender.

For Bailey, he is well priced in a good team but I'd monitor and downgrade to him later.

I'm doing my damnedest to keep 0.5m back. I might want it to switch Kane to Haaland for GW2.

Haha hopefully we can plan for price changes at GW2 at least! But yes KDB & Kane might easily become Son & Haaland at some point.

    Another RMT…

    Raya
Trent - cancelo - tripier- dalot
    Salah - rashford - martinelli - baily
    Kane - haaland

Bench - neco- andreas- 4.5 fwd
    1mil - itb

How would you spend the 1 mil itb to upgrade the team or what would you change?

Rashford scored 174 points on 20/21 and 179 in 19/20 as a forward (so missed out on CS, and extra point for goal/assist.
What went wrong last season? CR7 didn’t help. Maybe came into the season tired as England ran deep in Euro. Man Utd struggled as a team as well.
So if CR7 goes, or starts on the bench and Man Utd at least challenge top 4, odds are he will make a mockery of his price tag

Very possibly. But there are a few 'ifs' lurking behind your argument. I'd rather see real evidence - 1 or 2 GWs at least, and the end of the transfer window before I commit.

How's this looking? Pretty settled. Going big on Arsenal to start with following the Pre-season form but most positions are pretty flexible to make changes. Especially like the 5m Defs and the 8m Mids.

    Mesilier
    Trent Cancelo Zinchenko Trippier
    Salah Diaz Saka Neto
    Kane Jesus
    4.0 Neco Andreas Greenwood

    Cheers!

Its a rethink of how i spend my cash in mid. I had been on a 8 mil and Bailey, but want to move off Bailey.

        Diaz to Grealish
        Bailey to Rashford

I think scores more in the first 6 to 8 weeks.

          K. He might have the left of the front 3 for the first few weeks. A target like Haaland might change his fortunes from last year.
Both Grealish and Rashford enter my draft in the last 2 days so I hope they work out.
I was coming from a slightly different perspective my mid was 12.0 and 4 of the 8 mids but in the end 2 * 8.0 mids have become Grealish and Rashford to put even more cash back into the defence.

I suppose the only negative to the big 3 for you is not having 3 pool but having said that I like the Grealish and Rashford combo more overall. Bailey could be great for the price but a risk

After all the tinkering I looked at a screenshot of my first draft and maybe 3 players difference. Last moves were
    Mahrez to Grealish
And Neco to Digne (first bench) in the end I feel like I need something half decent on the bench and .5 left if I want to go Kulu to Bowen GW2. Son will soon be KDB.
Community shield might change this but if not this is where I am locked. Would love some feedback positive or negative

    Sanchez

    TAA Robertson Cancelo James

    Son Diaz Kulu Grealish Rashford

    Jesus

Cheers even with Richardson I think Kulu might still be pretty nailed and a really good asset. The Grealish pick I am not comfortable with at all. Thanks for the feedback.
