FPL team guides: Brighton – Best players, predicted line-up + more

Gameweek 1 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) is drawing ever nearer and we’re profiling all 20 Premier League teams before the season starts.

After weighing up what ArsenalAston Villa and Brentford players have to offer, we continue our team-by-team guides with Brighton and Hove Albion.

You can check out our Nottingham Forest, Fulham and Bournemouth analysis in our Promoted series, articles that will be refreshed before the big kick-off.

LAST SEASON: ATTACK

TotalRank v other Premier League clubs
Goals scored4215th=
Shots4897th
Shots in the box29810th=
Shots on target14614th
Big chances6311th
Expected goals (xG)54.459th

Underdelivering on some decent underlying stats has become a feature of Brighton seasons.

In each of their five years as a Premier League club, they have scored with fewer than 10% of their shots – ranking them in the bottom six in all five campaigns.

Only relegated Norwich City ‘underachieved’ more than the Seagulls last season when it came to actual goals scored versus expected goals (xG):

It’s a chronic issue and not one that Albion seem to have really addressed in the summer, with the jury still out on returning loanee Denis Undav (£5.5m) and the promising-but-raw Julio Enciso (£5.0m).

As a footnote, the underlying numbers were even better after the switch to a 3-5-2 in the run-in – despite Graham Potter’s side facing four ‘big six’ sides in that time. Albion were ranked sixth for minutes per big chance and xG in the final eight Gameweeks.

LAST SEASON: DEFENCE

TotalRank v other Premier League clubs
Goals conceded446th
Clean sheets117th=
Shots conceded4766th
Shots in the box conceded2916th
Shots on target conceded1466th
Big chances conceded587th
Expected goals conceded (xGC)50.746th

Brighton’s clean sheet count and goals conceded tally was more in keeping with the rest of their underlying defensive numbers.

Albion did ‘overachieve’ based on xGC – but then so too did 14 other clubs, in Opta’s eyes.

These strong figures you see above aren’t a fluke, either, as a Potter-led Brighton posted even better underlying numbers in 2020/21, finishing third for lowest xGC.

OPENING FIXTURES

The best budget FPL defenders for 2022/23 4

Robert Sanchez (£4.5m) kept clean sheets in nine of his 27 appearances against sides outside of the top five last season, a relevant stat as Brighton don’t meet Liverpool, Chelsea, Man City, Spurs or Arsenal this side of the September international break.

Such a strong opening schedule sees the Seagulls placed second on our Season Ticker from Gameweeks 1-8, when clubs are ranked by fixture difficulty.

The two-week hiatus will be a good time to hop off any Brighton players, as all of last season’s top four follow in Gameweeks 9-14.

    A) Diaz, Jesus (442, 0 ITB)
    B) Robbo, 8.0mid (541, 0.5 ITB)

In B that 8.0 mid could be any but Diaz. I like Maddison, Mount and Mahrez atm. TAA and Salah in, as is Martinelli.

I prefer B, but feel like I'm in the minority with that. I think Robertson gets more points than Diaz. Mount and Maddison are also the guys for Chelsea and Leicester and are on set pieces, so will be involved almost whenever those teams score. Whereas you could easily see Liverpool score 3 goals and Diaz not be involved.

Yeah I also prefer B, but Jesus ownership is pretty scary. I do think there is upside in betting against him though. Palace and Leicester aren’t the easiest opening fixtures. Though after that is does look very good for Arsenal.

Arsenal have failed to score against Leicester 3 times since 2000... I'd say Jesus is captain material vs leicester

Another way of using the same data in a far less misleading way would be to say Leicester scored against Arsenal in 3 of the last 8 games. Not really sure how games over 20 years ago are relevant now. With similar ish squads is better than half a chance of one goal or more.

Does high or low total ownership protect best against price drops? And why?

    1. The Tinkerman

I don’t think we can say one way or the other since the mechanism used to change prices is not transparent.

This might be completely off base but I thought price rises were based on number of purchases as a percentage of ownership whereas price drops were more based on absolute sales. So high ownership is riskier as it’s easier to drop than rise - however they are less risky when it comes to points earnt so it’s a trade off

      1. Bobby Digital
        • 6 Years

It used to be 10 % of ownership, but the last seasons it's been an unknown algorithm.

I think it's the other way around. Price rises based on absolute net transfers in. Price drops based on percentage of ownership and net transfers out.

A lot of content creators appear to be saying high ownership is risky in this regard but I don't agree, so was looking for someone slightly more informed than myself!

I also think there's something specificially in place under a certain percentage ownership which triggers a drop based on absolute net transfers out (and not factoring percentage ownership) in that GW.

My view is high percentage ownership protects better against drops as way more people have to transfer the player out in a single GW to trigger the drop - and not everyone will have the same transfer plans as each other.

Lower owned players especially under a cetain percentage are much more prone to a drop based on absolute net transfers out.

        But I could be wrong...

Either way I struggle to see it as a key consideration. Clearly you are looking to build a squad that will perform well - therefore your players will rise in price anyway.

If a player looks like falling 0.2/0.3 they are probably near your top priorities to get rid of anyway.

I think more relevant is the fact that if a high ownership player goes ballistic with hauls and you don’t have them then you are playing catch up to everyone.

I speak from experience that falling 20 points behind everyone can wreck a save much more than getting 20 points ahead of everyone can make a season - I’ve done both in recent years.

Yeah, I was mainly thinking for the bench fodder slots. Particularly the 4.5m forward(s). And 4.0m GK.

So I’m avoiding Greenwood for this reason (albeit I’m flirting with going 433 anyway).

You could argue that Greenwood is the template pick, so if the template changes to be 3 up top he is most at risk with all the players following the template …

On the whole - with us all wildcarding early I think it’s a relatively low risk - as long as wildcard transfers continue not to count.

Same thinking. If you do go for a 4.5m forward perhaps don't go for someone super low owned though as I think it actually increases the chance of a price drop based on total net transfers out in this instance.

What I can say with confidence is the free price change predictors are pretty solid. One you for the first half of the season i tried to get the highest squad value as a challenge (ie making 10+ transfers a week) and made it to 3rd in the world even though I didn’t do this for the first 2/3 GWs.

That said wildcard transfers don’t count so will be harder to predict this year as in the early weeks the number ob wildcards will be enormous

Tbh Mahrez is their best midfielder after KDB is on set pieces and in line for pens. Even if Foden says he wants RW this season Mahrez will still start the majority, he kept Sterling on the bench for most of last season. Riyad all day

This is the first draft I've been reasonably happy with for a while. Doherty/Maddison could become Zinch/Saka or Mahrez after a few weeks.

    Sanchez
    TAA Trippier Cancelo Doherty
    Salah Diaz Maddison Neto
    Kane Jesus

    Ward Andreas Neco Archer

Bit of loyalty from him absolutely exploding for me last few weeks of the season, I suppose - I like the look of those Brentford & Southampton fixtures for Leicester's style of play.

Exactly what I have with 2 city, Salah and Son then Son to KDB GW2. Robbo gets more minutes than Diaz easy even though I think Diaz is class. Mahrez ppg last season was very similar to KDB and has to start that RW spot.

      Forward tax.

Don't understand the logic of their pricing. If they made everyone similar value across all positions, there would be a variety in formations and strategies. But each position seem to sing from a different hymn sheet, so there's huge inequality between them.

    2. Mr. O'Connell
      • 11 Years

Forwards pricing is absolutely ludicrous this season. 7m is probably fair based on all the other forwards, it's just they're all priced about 1m too high.

With Sterling and Jesus gone, Haaland injured as per pep, Mahrez and Grealish should be sure for decent minutes in the opening weeks.

      I don't think many have 3 forwards.
The reason might be that there are nott enough decent forwards in the mid priced range, but there are enormous options in 7.5-8.5 range in midfield.
