FPL team guides: Brighton – Best players, predicted line-up + more

Gameweek 1 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) is drawing ever nearer and we’re profiling all 20 Premier League teams before the season starts.

After weighing up what ArsenalAston Villa and Brentford players have to offer, we continue our team-by-team guides with Brighton and Hove Albion.

You can check out our Nottingham Forest, Fulham and Bournemouth analysis in our Promoted series, articles that will be refreshed before the big kick-off.

LAST SEASON: ATTACK

TotalRank v other Premier League clubs
Goals scored4215th=
Shots4897th
Shots in the box29810th=
Shots on target14614th
Big chances6311th
Expected goals (xG)54.459th

Underdelivering on some decent underlying stats has become a feature of Brighton seasons.

In each of their five years as a Premier League club, they have scored with fewer than 10% of their shots – ranking them in the bottom six in all five campaigns.

Only relegated Norwich City ‘underachieved’ more than the Seagulls last season when it came to actual goals scored versus expected goals (xG):

It’s a chronic issue and not one that Albion seem to have really addressed in the summer, with the jury still out on returning loanee Denis Undav (£5.5m) and the promising-but-raw Julio Enciso (£5.0m).

As a footnote, the underlying numbers were even better after the switch to a 3-5-2 in the run-in – despite Graham Potter’s side facing four ‘big six’ sides in that time. Albion were ranked sixth for minutes per big chance and xG in the final eight Gameweeks.

LAST SEASON: DEFENCE

TotalRank v other Premier League clubs
Goals conceded446th
Clean sheets117th=
Shots conceded4766th
Shots in the box conceded2916th
Shots on target conceded1466th
Big chances conceded587th
Expected goals conceded (xGC)50.746th

Brighton’s clean sheet count and goals conceded tally was more in keeping with the rest of their underlying defensive numbers.

Albion did ‘overachieve’ based on xGC – but then so too did 14 other clubs, in Opta’s eyes.

These strong figures you see above aren’t a fluke, either, as a Potter-led Brighton posted even better underlying numbers in 2020/21, finishing third for lowest xGC.

OPENING FIXTURES

The best budget FPL defenders for 2022/23 4

Robert Sanchez (£4.5m) kept clean sheets in nine of his 27 appearances against sides outside of the top five last season, a relevant stat as Brighton don’t meet Liverpool, Chelsea, Man City, Spurs or Arsenal this side of the September international break.

Such a strong opening schedule sees the Seagulls placed second on our Season Ticker from Gameweeks 1-8, when clubs are ranked by fixture difficulty.

The two-week hiatus will be a good time to hop off any Brighton players, as all of last season’s top four follow in Gameweeks 9-14.

    What formation would you use?

    A - 442 with Trippier/Zinch + Neto
    B - 532 with Trippier + Zinch

How about this all-differential, not-really-that-unreasonable team:
    Lloris
    Matip / Laporte / Digne / Targett
    KDB / Bowen / Foden / Trossard
    Vardy / Toney

    Forster / Solanke / Koulibaly / D. Gray

Why not? Attacking wingback with great first 3 fixtures. He's totally going to outscore whomever I replace him with. This whole team is going to beat my regular team. I know it.

Tbh feels differential for the sake of it.

No guarantees Matip is first choice
      Laporte is injured
No reason to have Targett over Trips for the same price
Foden hasn’t really had a preseason
No guarantee Gray is first choice
Solanke has arguably the worst fixtures for arguably the worst team

Well, it is supposed to be an all-differential team that's capable of competing.

There's really no indication Matip isn't first choice. Last season he played virtually all the League games while Konate played all the others. And he had more attacking returns in the last 8 gameweeks than TAA or Robertson.
Agreed on Targett - just to be different.
Lots of people haven't had a preseason yet, but this team has a bench who can play, so if Foden doesn't, then someone comes in.
There's no reason to think Gray isn't first choice.
Solanke would be part of a rotation.

Either way, this isn't my team, it's just a hypothetical differential team.

Personally I’d want to be upgrading one of the 6m and below midfield.

Given fitness concerns I’d sacrifice Chilwell down to Neco Williams, have £2m to upgrade a midfielder and play 442

With everyone selecting Neto, what is the points total are you expecting from him? Assume he doesn't get injured and rotates and plays most games (like man city players). Will he get a total score of around 125?

He'll get a point total of 4 for me when he comes off my bench because, I have two injured defenders, and the bench boost week.

He's already got 124 and is nowhere near his prime, looked good when he returned from injury last year too. If he stays fit I see a big season for him

He could get to 140, but.... He's not a good enough player to do that on his own, he needs Wolves to be playing well as a team to have a chance of getting there, and that's a big IF...

For the elite, in FPL terms, it's not always the case (BigRon at points last season hauled in a woeful ManU team)... But Neto isn't quite elite (!), so, he does :o)

He's just the highest owned at that price point, a bandwagon looking like an early price drop to me, rather downgrade to Bailey and keep £0.5m in the bank...

My mind just takes decisions based on the point total a player can get lol. For the cheap mid spot there are a few options but just want to think before I pick one.

It's not really relevant. I'm only having him for his kind opening fixtures. He's not a long-term prospect.

Yeah I know most will bin him soon enough, but I don't see myself getting that much budget early on to upgrade him. Just wanted to know what kinda total would you see him getting. He has a 124 a season back.

Season long score is irrelevant as basically no one will hold him all season. Better question is likely points score for the period you plan to have him.

Given early fixtures something like 4 returns in the first 8 wouldn’t be a surprised and would be good for £5.5m

            1. Dags
              • 1 Year

No, I just like to know the total score so that it incorporates everthing and then I use it to estimate for the time I will keep him for.

I get that it’s just a lot of Netos appeal is the early fixtures - so total score doesn’t reflect this given clearly the fixture quality will even out.

As an example Michael Olise has the potential to outscore Neto over the season - I don’t think it’s obvious which way round they finish. However Palace have horrible fixtures and Wolves great fixtures.

So if you asked me to predict their season scores I might say around the same number but if you ask me who is the better GW1 pick I’d say Neto by a long long way

(Olise I think is injured but that’s irrelevant to my point above)

          Kane and Bailey
          or

Da Silva could come out for Neco or Andreas in later games.

One of the better threemium attempts I’ve seen but still not think it’s worth it. GW3 this will start to look strained when Neto Jonny and Trips all have a bad fixture and the nailedness of Walker and Martinelli are more likely to be in doubt.

In short - if convinced threemium is the way to go - I suspect you can’t do much better than this. I’m still a firm no to the threemium

Not for me, I think it's too weak a bench having Grealish, Martinelli and Bailey starting, and there's too much uncertainty still surrounding Martial at this point. Robbo to Dias, Grealish to Diaz perhaps?

Get a more assured defender in the team over Mart or Bailey and play 433.

            What combo you prefer:

            1) Dias and Diaz
            2) Dias and Mount
            3) Robertson and Grealish (would mean no 8mil slot)

            Thanks

1 out of those options. Consider 3 if you've got a somewhat decent bench option.

I'd say Tomisayu is slightly more safe in is spot (I could be wrong though, not an Arsenal fan), besides that though there's nothing between them, they both have a 6 point ceiling imo

Tomiyasu appears to be unfit to start GW1. White may well cover for him, but neither are nailed. Saliba looks like he will be nailed in CD. As a 1% differential I'm quite positive about him.

Steer clear if Ronaldo stays, if he goes Martial and Rashford will get the goals, Sancho will be the assister mainly

                      B. I've gone off Salah. Poor form for a while now and not shown much in preseason.

Obviously he could ruin me, but at 13m I'd want 100% confidence in him, and I don't have that anymore.

I'm going to stick my neck out and say Diaz will get more points than him this year.

                    Thoughts?

                    A) Bailey + James
                    B) Martinelli + Trippier
                    C) Rashford + 4.5

11m for the two spots basically. Got Mendy and Zinc

B out of that lot. All those mids are a touch risky, Trippier is great value and on set pieces.

James might be the pick if Chelsea can sort their defence out. I don't fancy them against Spurs though.

Why is Greenwood from Leeds so popular on FPL?

Simple. People look for the highest 4.5 fwd scorer of last season. He probably will be this season too.
But if you're parking him at the end of your bench it doesn't matter how many 1-point cameos he gets, he'll still be vulnerable to that price drop.

Leeds boss talking up various positions he can play. Seems the most likely 4.5 striker to see some minutes.

Most likely to get any mins.

I don't think it's likely he drops. All he needs is 1pt and he'll be top of the 4.5m striker leaderboard, and therefore pick up ownership.

Also drops are percentage based. The higher the ownership, the more need to sell to get a drop.

I intend to hold on longer to play my WC than most - that would make me exposed if I owned him. Archer will do given I'd be bringing on Andreas and my other sub first.

Not seeing many 4-3-3 teams on here.

I might go back to 4-4-2, but this could be interesting:

                    Raya
                    TAA / Trippier / Zinchenko / Justin
De Bruyne / Diaz / Mount
                    Kane / Darwin / Jesus

                    Bench: Gazza / N Williams / Andreas / Murphy

If you go with that squad, I wouldn't have Zaha on bench GW1... But, as you're spread your money around on a NoMo benching headache most weeks, it won't just be GW1...

Points per start since Diaz's arrival:

                    1) This is despite Salah being "out of form" in that spell. Salah over Diaz simply because of his reliability and explosiveness as a (c). Enough bargains elsewhere

                    2) Robertson over Diaz for £1m less

                      I prefer Robertson to Diaz:

Last season, Robertson had a 0.76 expected chance of returning (xGi + xCS) per 90 v Diaz's 0.55 (xGi).

Diaz was subbed in 7 of his 11 starts & with the 5 subs rule that could limit his chances to haul big. Also factor in that Robertson is £1m cheaper

But Salah/Robertson started most games, and finished most... Diaz competed with Mane, who's left... What's the equavalent pts / min played?

With Jota out and Darwin not ready, you might expect Diaz to play long minutes in the early games at least.

there is a 5m difference so comparing Diaz to another 8m mid would be more appropriate, nothing stopping people getting Robbo too

There is. Most people will have Salah and Trent, so there is a dilemma about which 3rd Pool asset to own.

Play Neto (lee) or Bailey (bou) gw1?

                      I may play both.

If Jimenez is out for their opener, then Neto may play up front as Wolves don't have any strikers

                    1) Salah & Barnes

                    2) Son & Diaz

Anyone taking the risk on Perisic GW1? Could be an absolute steal at 5.5 playing LWB.

Although he hasn’t got a great amount of minutes in pre season…

He will be eased in and will probably be hooked early often

Spurs play this evening, so we'll see. But currently he's out of my draft.

Haaland owners not worried about the Pep quotes?

Pep didn't say he won't start; he said he needs minutes in his legs. I can see him starting the early games and coming off early. But I have taken him out of my draft, yeh.
