FPL new signings: Will Zinchenko be ‘out of position’ at Arsenal?

Oleksandr Zinchenko‘s (£5.0m) move to Arsenal has seen his Fantasy Premier League (FPL) ownership climb past the 10% mark.

As a result, the Ukraine international is now a more popular purchase than Andrew Robertson (£7.0m) and every other Gunners defender in FPL.

Is Arsenal’s £30m new signing worthy of the newfound Fantasy interest, then? We’ll assess his appeal in this Moving Target piece.

WHAT PLAYER AND MANAGER HAVE SAID

“He can play in both (defence and midfield). He was a natural No. 10 early in his career and we converted him into a left-back which can do a lot of things that we want in our way of playing.

“That versatility is something that is going to be important for the team because we have players in that position who are more specific full-back so I’m really happy.” – Mikel Arteta

“He’s a player that I personally know really well and continued to follow him after my time at Manchester City. Alex is a high-quality player who will give us options and versatility. It’s not only about the positions he can play but as well, the versatility he will give us in attack and defence. Alex is a person with great human qualities and character, and I’m delighted that everyone has made this huge effort to bring Alex to the club.” – Mikel Arteta

“[My best position is] wherever the manager is going to see me on the pitches. It’s the simple answer but it’s true, even if the manager tells me one day I need to be goalkeeper, I will be there.

Yes, we spoke about my role in this team, but I would like to keep it private and then we are going to see.” – Oleksandr Zinchenko

“He was desperate to play and I knew that. It was a maximum 45 minutes but you could see straight away he was comfortable. He understands everything that I want, he understands the process and I thought he had a really good game.” – Mikel Arteta after Oleksandr Zinchenko’s debut v Chelsea

Never starting more than 15 Premier League games in a season and not stringing together more than four successive league appearances since the beginning of 2019/20, we haven’t really been able to take a sustained look at Zinchenko as an FPL asset.

The complete absence of goals is notable, while the assist count is modest, too – although four of those did arrive in 2021/22 from just 10 starts and five substitute appearances.

Virtually all of his City run-outs came at left-back, with opportunities to shine in midfield few and far between.

That wasn’t the case at his first club, Ufa, where the bulk of his 31 Russian top-flight appearances came in either a central, wide or attacking midfield role. Two goals and four assists came from those showings before he left, as a teenager, to join City.

And as for international duty, the Ukraine captain is almost exclusively used in central midfield.

A more eye-catching eight goals have arrived from his 52 caps, with his attacking potential showcased in last summer’s Euro 2020 quarter-final against Sweden.

WHERE WILL HE FIT IN AT ARSENAL?

Left-back or a left-sided number 8?

We’ll probably see Zinchenko in both positions during his time in north London but at the moment, the strong indications are that he will start the season at left-back.

Kieran Tierney (£5.0m) is now back in training but the injury-prone Scot has missed a big chunk of pre-season, featuring for only half an hour against Nurnberg on July 8 before fitness issues caused him to disappear from view again.

Zinchenko was indeed used at left-back in the thrashing of Chelsea, impressing in his 45-minute showing with his passing in particular.

There is, in fact, one more key quote we haven’t brought you yet from Arteta, which the Arsenal boss delivered a week ago.

“His main position is left-back but within that position and within the formation that we have he can alter and occupy different spaces on the pitch and this is the main quality he has.” – Mikel Arteta

What Arteta said above about Zinchenko occupying “different spaces” was evident against Chelsea: on some occasions he would tuck into central midfield or occupy the half-spaces, on others he would stick wider and bomb forward when left-winger Gabriel Martinelli (£6.0m) drifted infield.

Encouragingly, there were sights of Zinchenko in the opposition box, be it an underlapping run or some back-post loitering when play was being built up on the right.

With existing left-back options Tierney and Nuno Tavares (£4.5m) more at home hugging the touchline, Zinchenko’s arrival allows Arteta the option of further emulating his mentor Pep Guardiola’s ‘inverted full-back’ tactics.

“Zinchenko’s versatility has been particularly beneficial given the way Guardiola uses his full-backs. The City manager looked to invert his full-backs from the very early stages of his tenure at the Etihad, which his former City No 2 Arteta has attempted to replicate since getting the Arsenal job in December 2019, but mostly just with his right-backs.

“Takehiro Tomiyasu has emerged as the most comfortable aiding build-up play in more central areas of the pitch but Hector Bellerin and Ainsley Maitland-Niles have also tried to meet their manager’s demands over the past two and a half years.” – Art de Roche/Mark Carey, The Athletic

When we do see Zinchenko in midfield, it’ll likely be at the expense of Granit Xhaka (£5.0m), whose limitations as a number eight even Arteta admitted to last season. The reported pursuit of Lyon’s Lucas Paqueta, however, suggests that the Arsenal boss wants even more options in the engine room for his dream 4-3-3 set-up.

Playing 4-4-2 and conceding goals like getting pressies at Christmas in pre season. Lost to an MLS team then battered by Arsenal.

I prefer Trippier over all the 4.5 options. Would both others be a 4.0 if you got him?

You would have an issue GW5 when Neco and Trippier have nasty fixtures

Are Man U's and Wolves fixtures great? They were both absolute dross second half of last season.

Just look at the opening weekend. Brighton was going away to a resurgent Spurs and beating them 1-0 last season. Leeds have bought well and their manager has now had time to coach them in the summer. Both Leeds and Man U could easily lose to nil in those fixtures.

This isn't a pop at you but I think people have put blinkers on with regards to those particular mids and are all trying to convince each other they're going to excel.

Don't get me wrong I have two premiums in defence and two players I think can match their more expensive counterparts. Gambling on three players based on very small sample sizes and having no 8m mids at all seems insane to me.

      Like it...
Almost identical to mine except I'm a wait and see on James atm... I suspect Chelsea defence will take a few weeks to bed in and James may even start as the right sided centre back until another is signed.
I've gone Lloris/R.Dias instead of Ederson/James for that reason until my wildcard around GW6 or 7

i kind of like no triple ups to start so i have flexibility to move to anyone from any team.

    Meslier (4.0)
    TAA, Trippier, Gabriel, Jonny (Neco)
    Salah, Grealish, Neto (Andreas, Dasilva)
    Haaland, Kane, Jesus

        Me neither to be honest.

Grealish could become Martinelli and bank 1.0

Or Jesus > 4.5 frees up enough for Dasilva & Grealish > Martinelli & 9.0

Bowen is a bit overpriced isn't it, 17 assists last season and if I'm looking at the stats right he should've got around 6; still add a few for FPL "assists", but shame he isn't priced @ 8 at the very least

yeah but lose 6 or so assists and inevitably 3/4 bonus and his ppg comes down in line with Mount/Maddison etc

would've been more fair to have him at 8, being .5 more just seems ott and prices him out

i guess it depends if people think he can perform just that little bit better than last season to justify the price

    3. DelPiero10

A gives you the chance to switch to Haaland, having Johnson locks in you to him/Solanke/Undav/Mateta price point and it's a bit meh, 6mil and under mids have better options if Martinelli doesn't work out, so A

      Consider the following lot:

      Ederson
      TAA, Cancelo, Trippier, Cash (Neco)
Salah, Díaz, Bowen, Bruno Guimarães (Andreas)
      Haaland, Brennan Johnson (4.5)

Would you downgrade Ederson to 4.5, B. Johnson to a bench fodder, and upgrade Andreas to Grealish, playing a 4-5-1 but having only Neco as sub? Or would you take this more conservative approach above?

      1. RogDog_jimmy

1 playing bench is enough for me, so i don't mind two dead forwards.

I think Bruno G is such a weird pick, no one really knows where he will play and Newcastle aren't great going forward.

You have such a weird way of debating. You seem to be on your high horse because people have players you don't like or rate, and have lumped us all into sheep category as if we independently can't see them as good choices

Last season is not this season, teams are different, tactics are different, it's fpl, prices are different. Rashford barely played after recovering from surgery, Neto barely played because of an ACL, Martinelli was in and out of the team

Not on a high horse against anything other than group think and this weird template that's developed. When you first went on FPL to do a team were Neto, Rashford or Martinelli in your thoughts?

I'm just trying to warn people off from taking some so many gambles simply because someone else who is already taking those gambles has convinced them to do so.

No season is the same you're right but I don't remember any season where more than one gamble at the start has really paid. And in the most part those players that did were carrying over good form from the end of the previous season.

That's exactly being on your high horse mate, it's group think and weird to you. My team hasn't changed since the game opened, all 3 were in my team yes

Maybe your chosen players are the gambles? And if you're warning people, aren't they going to do what you've convinced them to do?

Fair enough but that boils down to what you consider a gamble, a nailed to start the season martinelli and oop fit Neto are hardly the biggest gambles, especially at the price

                                      Rashford is Ronaldo dependant

Yeah so I admitted I was on my high horse but stated it wasn't personal which is what you implied with the sheep reference. My chosen players are proven. And that's all I'm saying, people shouldn't gamble so much with their initial draft, it never works out as well as they'd hoped.

So now can you answer how you came to the conclusion that anyone has come to the conclusion that these 3 highly rated young players are good, only in the last 2 weeks

Because they've emerged as the template picks in the last two weeks. Did you have them as possibilities before you kept seeing their names popping up on here?

Rashford has the highest potential, 3 impressive seasons in a row cannot be forgotten about

Neto depends on Lage deciding that he doesn't want to bore Wolves fans to sleep anymore

Martinelli for me is a tough one because he'll just inevitably be rotated with ESR , Arteta seems to take after Pep in that regard and rotate even if a player is doing enough to justify a starting place.

Agreed but Martinelli should be fine to start with, and then yeah it's down to him and his performances if he's not playing well he'll definitely be heavily rotated

Wolves are poor in attack but Neto strikes me as a player that can get points regardless, indeed he has done that in the past when Nuno was boring us to death. They don't score often but he's usually heavily involved in what they do score

I've never moved off Martinelli, but I had Neto for a long time until Jimenez's injury. I've now shifted to a differential in Lingard - I can see Forest playing to the strengths he demonstrated at West Ham.
Rashord - I want to see how United, along with Chelsea perform in the combat of the PL this season before I dive in.

Jimenez has been crap since his injury. Him being out makes Neto a better option imo, not worse.

Quite possibly. I'd want to see them in PL action first. It's not like he hauls bigly - getting him in a week or two late won't be an issue. In fact, by that time it might be Podence or MGW who emerges.

In his good season c. 25 games, Neto scored c. 3 points per match

Last season, Martinelli scored c. 3.8 ppm, very underwhelming

Rashford has been very poor for a couple of seasons, and it looks like "the king" is back

                                        Sorry, having a moment!

I’ve had a draft like it but ended up moving more to defence. But personal opinion….just think Cancelo is a good price for someone who looks good for 170+ points

                                        Otherwise looks good
