FPL team guides: Everton – Best players, predicted line-up + more

We’re profiling all 20 Premier League clubs before Gameweek 1 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) gets underway.

From our top picks from each team to a predicted line-up for the opening weekend, we’ll be covering each top-flight side in detail.

Everton are up next, with the focus here on the Frank Lampard era that started in Gameweek 24 of 2021/22.

Data in this article comes from our Premium Members Area, which you can access with a discounted subscription for as little as £2.49 a month today.

It was a bit of a miserable picture from an attacking perspective after Lampard’s appointment, with only the three relegated clubs scoring at an inferior rate to the Toffees (1.06 per game).

They were bottom-five material for everything from shots to xG, too.

Using our Team Comparison tool to assess Everton before and after Lampard’s appointment, we can see that there was even a downward turn in the underlying numbers from Gameweek 24 onwards:

Above: Everton’s underlying attacking numbers from Gameweeks 1-23 (left) and Gameweeks 24-38 (right). Most figures given are per game.

Lampard could even call upon Richarlison (£8.5m) and an admittedly rusty-looking Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£8.0m) for much of his tenure, with the former now packed off to Tottenham Hotspur.

LAST SEASON: DEFENCE

GAMEWEEK 24 ONWARDS
TotalRank v other Premier League clubs*
Goals conceded3116th
Clean sheets510th
Shots conceded25914th
Shots in the box conceded16713th
Shots on target conceded9718th
Big chances conceded4015th
Expected goals conceded (xGC)30.4814th

*Rankings are weighted per game due to the different number of matches that clubs played from Gameweek 24 onwards

The clean sheet count was fairly healthy following Lampard’s appointment, with five shut-outs being banked in 18 matches.

The rest of the underlying defensive data was less impressive as Jordan Pickford (£4.5m) was kept busy, making more saves per 90 minutes (3.76) than all bar two other first-choice goalkeepers.

A comparison of the numbers pre and post-managerial change reveals something of a mixed bag, with big chance concession and xGC not really altering to a significant level:

Above: Everton’s underlying defensive numbers from Gameweeks 1-23 (left) and Gameweeks 24-38 (right). Most figures given are per game.

James Tarkowski (£4.5m) has been brought in over the summer to bolster the backline, with an improvement at defending free-kicks and corners surely a priority: only Leicester had a worse xGC from set plays last season, something that was the case both before and after Lampard’s appointment.

OPENING FIXTURES

The best budget FPL midfielders for 2022/23 2

A motley collection of opening games sees Everton rank lower-mid-table for fixture difficulty in Gameweeks 1-8, which will be enough to deter many FPL managers from considering the Toffees as viable options.

The concern would be a continuation of their abysmal away form of last season, as most of their early ‘winnable’ matches come on the road.

European qualifiers Chelsea, Liverpool and West Ham all visit Goodison Park between now and the international break. That trio of clubs plus Arsenal were among the division’s seven highest-scoring teams in 2021/22, so multiple clean sheet opportunities don’t leap off the page.

What's the best 5/4.5m def combo?

    A) Zinchenko, Botman
    B) Trippier, 4.5 Ars
    C) Other

Not too keen on Dalot until we see how Man U start.

won't have an affect on Almiron who I'd expect to start the first two on the right wing, we're still trying to sign another player there though and Fraser plays there too so doubt he'll play long term. Willock will probably start the first couple now, though Longstaff can play there too

Look upon my offerings and despair for this is the one true way to the Lord (Lundstrom):

    Meslier
    Dalot | Robertson | TAA | Trippier
    Son | Maddison | Mount | Diaz
    Kane | Martial

    Ward | Neco | Andreas | Greenwood

Salah vs a promoted team gw1 is really hard to ignore, so for me that's an obvious issue with the team. No City at all either with their great fixtures, I'd at least grab Cancelo. Martial could do well if Ronaldo is out of the picture so he is a nice punt

No Salah, no City, if you're going to go Meslier then surely have his 4.0 back-up rather than Ward. Kulu & Mahrez offer better fixtures than Mads.

I don't want three Spurs attackers. Ward might actually play and could be a better option GW1.
Mahrez is still a wait and see until we have some inkling who plays.
Robertson might become Cancelo GW2 or Trippier Cucurella if he moves

Yeah it's a tough one, Rash has picked up a couple of goals but he still doesn't look good from what I've seen. I think Sancho is a much safer option and a much better player. Still Rash could easily match him for 1m less

I wouldn't be 100% sure Botman starts week 1. Howe seems to be loyal to his players when they're playing well, Bruno G took 7 appearances off the bench before his first start because Shelvey and Willock were playing so well. I think he'll be first choice long term, but I wouldn't be surprised to see Schar/Burn week 1

Indeed sir. Their early work was a little too new wave for my taste. But when Sports came out in '83, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a far more bitter, cynical sense of humor.

Has a head for goal - Palace and Leicester weak defending set pieces. i'm minded to start with him and shift to Zinchencko GW3 if Z's place is secure.

Why no Mitro love here? not seeing him in many drafts. Early fixtures arent great but hes nailed, on pens and plays for a team who focus on getting the ball to him in scoring positions. Marco Silva teams, even when with Watford score goals.

I love the Baily and Mitro combo, great insurance if Bailey isn't nailed or performing but covers Mitro GW1

Frankly I dont see why anyone would get him. Wouldn't want a Chelsea CB now, and if/when they improve James/Chilwell are well, well worth the 0.5 more

No. Either save 0.5 and get Mendy or spend 0.5 more and get a WB.

What do we think is going to happen with Tierney/Zinchenko? I personally think Tierney will start at lb most games when fit and Zinchenko will play in midfield. Arsenal may also play 3 at the back on the odd occasion with Tierney lcb and Zinchenko at lwb. Anyone think Tierney is now 2nd choice lb?

        1. Andy_Social
          • 11 Years

He's unreliable due to his fitness record. Could be 2nd choice, but more likely Zin will only play LWB when Tierney is injured, and his default spot will be in midfield.

SkyBet are as low as 3/10 for Man City to win away at West Ham. They are shocking odds. West Ham finished 7th and scored in all their home matches last season. Man City lost away the first game of last season and can be slow starters (6 wins in opening 10 matches is low by their standards).
West Ham +1 (not lose) is 5/2, decent bet in my opinion.
