FPL pre-season: Jesus hits hat-trick – and is Saka on pens?

Saturday’s pre-season friendlies continued at lunchtime with Arsenal’s thumping of Sevilla.

We’ve got the goals, assists, line-ups and Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from this match in our Scout Notes, with more reports on the day’s other games – including the Community Shield – to follow.

We’re also keeping tabs on the minutes played in all of these warm-up fixtures, with Premium Members of Fantasy Football Scout able to access this information at the bottom of this article.

ARSENAL 6-0 SEVILLA

  • Goals: Saka x2 (1 pen), Jesus x3, Nketiah
  • Assists: Martinelli x2, Gabriel

Gabriel Jesus (£8.0m) cemented his place in millions of FPL squads with a hat-trick in Arsenal’s final pre-season friendly.

The treble took his tally to seven for the summer and while pre-season form can sometimes not be worth the word processing software it’s typed on, a striker going into Gameweek 1 brimming with confidence and feeling good about his new surroundings is more often than not a good thing.

The question for those going without him is: how is your nerve? The Brazilian is now owned by more than two-thirds of Fantasy managers and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see that ownership figure pass 70% by the time we get to the Gameweek 1 deadline.

CLINICAL JESUS

Two of Jesus’s efforts were opportunistic rebounds after parries from the wobbly Sevilla goalkeeper Bono (insert joke about U2’s ‘Bad’ here), with his second strike a sliding effort from an inviting Gabriel Martinelli (£6.0m) cross.

Four of Jesus’s pre-season goals have been first-time efforts, while another two have been of the swift control-and-finish variety; some clinical execution from a striker whose conversion rate and xG delta wasn’t actually all that impressive at Manchester City. Perhaps being less pressured to impress in limited game-time will boost the Brazil international’s confidence in front of goal, or perhaps he’ll regress more to the mean when meaningful competitive action gets underway.

A Crystal Palace backline that was among the division’s best from an underlying stats perspective will certainly be a test this week.

“You are hoping that that is going to happen but obviously a player has to adapt to a new city, to a new club, new teammates and he’s done it in a really fast and natural way. You can see the way they look for him on the pitch, on and off the ball, and what he’s able to transmit as well on that pitch so I am really happy.

“What are seeing is that everybody, not just Gabby, plays at that intensity and that willingness to win the ball, to promote mistakes and to play in the opponent’s half as much as possible. You cannot do that if players at the front are walking, they are not tracking, they don’t have that instinct and that intention to provoke things that we want and Gabby is phenomenal at that.

“His versatility is well known. Now we are using him as a nine, he can play as a winger, off the left and the right. You can play with two strikes as we have done in pre-season as well and change the shape a little bit. He gives us a lot of flexibility.” – Mikel Arteta on Gabriel Jesus

STARTING XI CLUES

Arsenal’s win over Sevilla didn’t tell us too much new on the personnel front: this was the same starting XI that Arteta named in the previous friendly against Chelsea and it looks increasingly like the one that will take to the field against Crystal Palace on Friday.

Injury victims Takehiro Tomiyasu (£4.5m), Kieran Tierney (£5.0m), Emile Smith Rowe (£6.0m) and Fabio Vieira (£6.0m) are at least back in training and could be in contention for a place in the matchday squad but Arteta’s comments seem to suggest that quartet will be eased into first-team action in the coming weeks.

“I think that most of them will be [available], they’ll have to go through what they need to this week and then hopefully we’ll have them available. They are lacking minutes but we’ll have to build that up like any other injury that we get during the season.” – Mikel Arteta on whether his injured players will be ready for Friday

SAKA ON PENS?

Bukayo Saka (£8.0m) took and converted Arsenal’s spot-kick in Saturday’s win, seemingly rubber-stamping his position as the Gunners’ first-choice taker given that Jesus and Martinelli were on the pitch at the time.

It might not be that simple, however.

Saka was both the winner and taker of Saturday’s penalty, something that has been the case for the last three league spot-kicks that Arsenal have been awarded (two for Saka, one for Martinelli).

Unless we get explicit confirmation from Arteta, a bit of uncertainty remains about the pecking order.

ADVANCED XHAKA
FPL pre-season: Jesus hat-trick and Saka on pens 1

Above images from Sofascore

We saw plenty of full-backs Oleksandr Zinchenko‘s (£5.0m) and Ben White (£4.5m) ‘inverting’ on Saturday, forming a three-man midfield with anchor Thomas Partey (£5.0m) whenever Arsenal bombed forward in a 2-3-5.

That meant that we were treated to the sight of Granit Xhaka (£5.0m) joining the usual foursome in the attack, the Swiss registering two shots and creating three chances.

We’re not suggesting yellow card magnet Xhaka is any sort of FPL target, of course, more that he is likely going to be a placeholder for whichever ‘number eight’ Arsenal recruit.

The tactics also put Zinchenko’s appeal in some perspective, with his attacking threat limited.

It was only a few days ago that we were highlighting his penalty box occupancy against Chelsea, however, so different approaches for different games or periods of matches will probably be the case – something Arteta implied after full-time.

“He gives us a different option to play within the role in different spaces, and I’m really happy to have him.” – Mikel Arteta on Oleksandr Zinchenko

Arsenal XI (4-3-3): Ramsdale, White, Gabriel, Saliba, Zinchenko (Soares 79), Xhaka (Lokonga 90), Partey (Elneny 79), Saka (Nketiah 79), Odegaard, Martinelli (Nelson 90), Jesus (Pepe 79)

Not an Arsenal fan but they have four or five really good FPL assets this year.

If you already have both Jesus and Martinelli, maybe Mount over Saka

*For those who enjoy long posts by those who earns theri living writing about FPL ( i get it from the rest of you...TLDR.) 😉

Really am bullish on Sterling, and I expect him to have the edge in the G department over Mount...but Mount keeps ticking along, and that 2m gap in price is a massive one. If I back Sterling and an 8m option looks essential, then its a breeze to downgrade and then have 2m to spend in the early going, making a jump on a bandwagon or two so much easier. But, should I go Mount, it will be tough to upgrade to Sterling. Heres where I am at now, a non-Sterling side...and now I am concerned things are getting a bit too template.

Problem with high ownership players, particularly the lesser priced ones, is that they are the ones likely to lose .1m or .2m in value faster than the differentials. So, too many high-owned players not only keeps you having a unique side that could outscore the template, but high owned guys, like Neto, for example, are going to drop .1m quicker than anyone, which leaves me priced out of a 5.5m replacement.

    Anyway...the latest. Thoughts appreciated.

    Ramsdale
    TAA, Robertson, Cancelo, Perisic
    Salah, Mount, Neto, Bailey
    Kane, Jesus
    (Ward, Andreas, Neco, Archer)

Only one city rep but I argue its the best one in terms of consistency and nailed-on-ness. Only one City player topped 200 pts last season...so if I am to have one, seems I got the best. Haaland is one FT away from coming in if need be. Like every season under Pep, i imagine many attackers not named KDB are going to have some big rounds, but I just prefer nailed options. If anything, I may double up in their defence.

I know Perisic isn't as safe to start the season as one would want, but I am willing to tolerate the potential growing pains in the first two weeks. Otherwise, he's bound to be fully fit and making a mockery of the price tag. I'm looking at this premium back 4 as players that won't budge anytime soon, allowing FTs to be concentrated on moves like Kane-Haaland for Week 2 if need be, or maybe I flip Mount for a 7-8m MCI option short term. In general though, I just dont think its wise to start with a MCI mid and expect more than three starts in a row. With a thin bench and wanting to avoid 10 minute cameos (which there will be more of now with 5 subs). Again, Cancelo is enough cover for me until someone else emerges to be as indispensible as he is.

Double LIV defense pleases me. Robertson and TAA are just fantasy gold, I like the differential of backing Robbo +1m over Diaz.

Martinelli or Saka clearly look promising based on last night, and even before last night, but in the end, I dont want to triple up on ARS. Jesus has to make it in, so I felt Ramsdale was the best way to get defensive cover. Rather have a 5m GK I trust to stay in my side, at least until I WC, versus the 4.5m GK's who will be more hit or miss. That said, with a 5m GK, should a 4.5m option look just as good, yet another easy transfer where i actually get cash back.

Kane, Trent, Robbo, Cancelo, Jesus...the bench. All without worry. So it leaves whether the strength put into 9 high-end starters, will carrying Neto and Bailey as starters be asking too much? I "think" so. I'm not expecting Wolves attack to suddenly level up...there's no reason to think it will. But with fixtures (Week 3 exception), he should at least be worth sticking with for some time. Bailey, on the other hand, has a 2 week audition, (bou, EVE), and he may be a regret pick not easy to replace...but his preseason form has been consistent and the Cherries and Toffees defense does not concern me. Come Week 3, when Bailey gets a tougher fixture, Im happy to play Andreas (BRE) over him.

I had to write this to reference over the next week as my brain will undoubtedly plant seeds of doubt. I can come back to this an remember my logic behind choosing this side.

I general, I like the idea of getting the very best players, money no object, and then fill out the remainder with promising budget players. For attack, Im just not feeling much between the 5.5 options and the 8m options, so maybe this side isn't ideally balanced, but its the kind of experiment I'm willing to try given our WC situation this year. Feedback, please!

Robertson over Diaz is a differential.
Kane over Haaland is a differential.
          Mount is under 10%
Bailey is under 10% besides the clear awareness in the community here.

And when it comes to high owned picks like TAA, Cancelo, Salah...I dont even concern myself about how common of picks they are -- they are all 200+ point studs.

"low end stuff, good for new managers"...damn that's pretty cold considering how long I've been going at this, and fantasy sports in general, which goes back to the 90s. But ok, its low end, I guess.

                Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall.

He's gonna be the budget mid for the season. Im just going Bailey now to jump on early fixtures/form.

5.5 option? Alexis Mac Allister. Hear me now and believe me later.

No one spoon fed me these guys. But, if you go to my twitter feed, you can see how much Ive backed them. 😉

I do like KDH and he's nailed. But I prefer Bailey slightly as a punt to begin with. Longer term think I might prefer Andreas as my last starting mid who will play in a more advanced role that KDH, be on some set pieces plus you save the 0.5 to strengthen elsewhere.

so you agree then, there is a Bailey exit strategy. also, there's a good chance another 5.5 option for Neto will show itself within a few GWs, and Im ok with rolling Neto a few GWs, not fussed if Wolves cant find the net. Odds are, Neto owners are gonna jump on the first 5.5m MID to pop, and I will simply have to make that my transfer priority that week...cause outside of Bailey/Neto...this XI is pretty much a no-worries side, both with playing time and fixtures. Admit it, you are starting to see more of the genius of this aren't ya? 😉

Haha, I'm likely going a step further than you to begin with...going Salah Martinelli Neto Bailey Andreas. Main reason is I'm likely bench boosting and want to invest in forwards and defence. These cheapie mids allow that plus I'll know I'm wildcarding early so can restructure then.

If you read before you typed you would realise how very 2 premium template it is. As I say the template is a template for a reason so nothing wrong with it but it's hardly genius.

So, by your logic, I should have read all these comment pages, and be influenced by the herd, rahter than do what I've done, which is - not read or interact with this board, and form my own opinions based on my own research and observations, which I do on the front lines as the senior staff writer for the fantasy PL deparment at NBCSports, now ten years in.

So apparently my team is quite template among the community here. So be it. I just came on here to present my squad, provide reasoning for the selections, and get some feedback...its something I traditionally do on here this time of the year. One thing I will say, the amount of people with smug attitudes toward completely harmless content Iseems to be growing upon every visit.

Thanks for the "good luck". I hope you are able to recognize when a term like "genius" is being used tongue-in-cheek, as it was here. Since I'm completely unknown to you by all accounts, you should come check out my content sometime. Clearly, I'm way off your radar, so maybe you will find some material that isn't "talked about on every page".

                        Been a real pleasure.

My assumption you were American was that you write for NBC.

The smugness was based on you starting by telling people you write professionally - the special combination of condescension whilst "teaching your grandma to suck eggs" however seems pretty unique to you but maybe it works on NBC.

That was the first time since the day I got the job that I brought up my employer on this message board. And it was a self-depricating observation that I put a piece out, see the page refresh, and immediately see a spelling error I missed, which, as a writer, you kind of have a habit of making sure you don't do. It made me cringe. Imagine whatever it is you do for a living, you make a complete gaffe in front of the audience you are addressing on your area of expertise, right out of the gate...its cringe, and I felt compelled to acknowledge it. That's all. No agenda beyond that. Again, I defy you to track down a comment in my account history that ever mentions who I work for. So, if Ive never done that in 10 years, and do it the first time today...do you really think I am trying to impress someone?

Is it just possible that something rather inocuous rubbed you the wrong way and you decided to be a douchebag about it? I'm beginning to conclude that's what took place here. Oh well. I'll keep my fingers crossed you one day meet an American who understands the concept of irony. Rarer than a unicorn, surely.

Pretty much the 2 premium template which isn't a bad thing - it's the template for a reason.

      Essentially;

      TAA Robbo Cancelo
      Salah Neto
      Jesus,
      4.0, Neco, Adreas, 4.5

Personally I've gone less for 4th def and keeper allowing Martinelli as the cheaper mid.

good team, i always look at the weak links in teams first, and this team just has the two cheap mids that stand out, i think if you forget about their price and just look at the teams they play for and their attacking potential then they are fine options as long as they play

yeah but they are an ok mid table side, and the position he plays will mean he's will be heavily involved in a lot of their attacks, you're right about the escape plan but that is something to figure out when you need it, i don't have either player fwiw but i do think they're both underpriced due to missing most of last season

        Fantasic question, Bart.

I was on a 532 for weeks, with Dasilva in with Andreas, but I realized that Andreas has fixtures when Bailey doesnt. There's a decent rotation, and that gives me two bench players who should be nailed startes instead of just one.

Hmm I haven't really considered rotation as it always backfires for me. My gravitating to a 532 is solely based on Alonso starting the season at 5.5m.

Thanks for bothering to post this.

It makes a nice change to the one line RMT requests (yawn!)

I also avoided Neto for the same reasons as yourself but in favour of Aaronson from Leeds. Been getting good reports about him as a nailed attacking Mid. Van Dijk seems a cheaper play with probably more minutes than Robbo over the season so I went there but nothing in it points wise I suspect.

I think Chelsea have some big issues so will avoid Mount and especially a dodgy looking defece at the minute but I like the rest of the team.

I also appreciate your long thought out post Fuzzy. In fact, your draft is very similar to mine, and your reasoning reflects mine too. I made the spine of my draft the day the prices came out before any template had emerged. That the template is similar to my draft is neither here nor there, although it does frustrate me that having put long analysis to construct it, muppets asking 'A or B'? questions end up going with the herd to mindlessly arrive where you and I pioneered a way, only to be trolled. But that's the nature of this place and social media these days. You can't win.

Regarding the draft, my doubts concern a weakness in my own - those cheap mids that enable a good defence and attack. I feel that I've kind of resolved the problem by only needing to play one and bench one each GW, but my semi-intention is to drop one in a 2FT when we see what early bargains are emerging.

Andy, first, let me just give my sincere thanks for replying to me like that. It has helped diffuse my agitated state.

Thoughts on these cheap mids - if Neto can return once in the first 3 GWs, Im cool. That to me would be "break even" value and, given the fixtues, (we can only expect returns so often from budget players) but also keeping expectations realistic for an attack that struggled last season, I think it's a realistic chance he can get an early return. Its Bailey I'm more concerned with, but I really think as an 11th starer, and given plus fixtures, Andreas is good enough to get a run out in the XI. I think I start him over Baily in Week 3, for example. So I should be good til at least Week 4 in terms of not panicking.

Meanwhile, when you look at the other 9 that I hae starting, zero questions on "can they haul in this fixture" or "will they start" for all of them, save perhaps GW1 Perisic. So, theortically, if I believe in those nine guys, I can focus my early transfers on those budget gems that emerge. Like i mentioned earlier, I think Dewsbury-Hall is a nice play when fixtures get a little better, if not already. End of the day, while it is a bit less flexible than the typical Week 1 side I put together, between the benefit of the extra WC and feeling very good about sticking with about 7 of thiese starters long term, I think I won't back myself into any damaging corner.

Good luck this season, my friend.

Thanks, we're clearly of similar mind. I have set up conservatively in the sense of focussing on nailed-on starters with the exception of Peresic. If my gamble on him doesn't pay off, Bailey/Neto steps up Gw1 and Andreas Gw2. By then I'll have 2FT and 1m itb to do some surgery. So yeh, those cheap enablers play an important role in allowing the other 9/10 to have a good chance of returning. People who choose to go with 8m mids have to reduce their defence when premiums look so good, or reduce their attack and potentially miss hauls there. All are valid approaches.

None come to mind at the moment. 2020-2021 must have been quite the crazy time for you. Pretty much only migrant workers were the only people allowed to move back and forth out of Thailand then. Well, my days of doing visa runs there are over I think, but I may hop over there for a holiday. The Dead Kennedys wrote a song about it. Must be a good idea then.

Bailey is my one concern. He’s not nailed and you will want to transfer him out in GW4-5. But because there’s nobody to move to at his price point it’ll take two moves to switch a very iffy player

Maybe also Zinchenko + 4.0 to two 4.5s you can rotate based on fixtures and to cover for the possible benching of Martinelli or Bailey

No Robertson, Cancelo or James could be painful. Taking 4m out of Son and spreading around the team would probably improve it.

If you’re set on three premiums + Jesus, maybe a 5-3-2 with Neto + 4.5 instead of Martinelli + Bailey and get in some 4.5 defenders you can rotate (Jonny/Dunk/White?) to upgrade Perisic to Cancelo/Robertson. Lots of tinkering but just my view

Morning all, 1 thing I can't really understand from the template / most RMTs. We know the game rewards mids in terms of points scored and the top mids usually come out with most points. So why am I seeing so many teams with Salah + Neto, Bailey, Andreas, Martinelli.

Surely a recipe for disaster when there's so many proven mids in the 8m range

Possibly due to having a high premium forward once again plus a backline of four premium defenders. I suspect though, the likes of TAA will more than match the output of most 8m mids.

With the GW16 WC I've decided to go more aggressive with my initial team. Think it's worth the gamble as I will be WC in the first 8 weeks anyway. At least mine above I could always downgrade Son to a 8.0 if really needed. I personally think Martinelli is underpriced.

    5. jia you
      • 7 Years

Each to their own but my reasoning is that I want to invest in forwards and defenders to begin with (especially if I'm bench boosting as those low prices popular mids are handy).
I'm happy to perhaps start without the 8m mid slot. I know on wildcard (which will almost certainly be very early) I'll restructure and have a much stronger midfielder

    6. KieranKA
      • 2 Years

I think it’s a play based on value in defence. James is probably going to outscore Martinelli. Robertson and Cancelo are probably going to outscore Grealish. Trent is probably going to outscore Sancho.

I agree though, I can’t feel my squad is balanced without an 8m mid

they are just enablers, i don't think their price means they are bad options though, wasn't Mahrez only 5.5 the year Leicester won the league and he got 240pts ?, i remember Fraser being the same a few years ago and he got 180, i'm sure there is other examples too

    Which team would you have?

    A:
    Ederson // Olsen
Trent Cancelo James Zinchenko // Williams
Salah Díaz Martinelli Neto // Andreas
    Kane Jesus // Plange

    B:
    Sánchez // Steele
    Trent Robertson Cancelo James Jonny
Salah Saka Neto // Andreas Colback
    Kane Jesus // Plange

These have been my two drafts for a bit, more or less. I was on team A this morning and still feel it’s the more flexible option. But I’ve always had a sneaky feeling that B is going to out score in the early weeks. Today city defence looked shaky, Saka scored twice (and might be on pens), Díaz and Martinelli’s end product was lacking and Robertson got an assist, so I’m leaning back toward B. Would appreciate your thoughts

To be fair Liverpool are quite good - they won't play then every week although they do need a LB too. Stones missed preseason so not sharp but can see him coming in soon after a good last season.

      B. If you’re wary of triple Arsenal attack, you could swap out Martinelli for whichever of Neto, Gordon, Almirón, Bailey or Harrison you trust

    Ok, first RMT after tinkering:

    Ederson
    Robertson Trent air nori Dalot
    Kdb Salah (c) martinelli Neto
    Jesus vardy (vc)
    4.5, Anderson 4.5 , 4

Saka or other 8 m mid is only thing I can’t squeeze in. Robbo to 5 vardy to Kane also option.

It sounds like you’re willing to compromise on Vardy. If so, downgrading him to (say) Wilson would allow you to upgrade Martinelli to an 8m or Ederson Dalot to Ramsdale Cancelo

  15. Dynamic Duos

Ok Bailey over Dalot it is but that 8m mid spot will give me headache until deadline

    Meslier
    TAA Cancelo Gabriel
    Salah Diaz 8m Martinelli Bailey
    Kane Jesus

    Ward Neco Da Silva Plange

I think it is. There are other good options elsewhere. Martinelli is good but much less reliable than Saka

I’m going to have two at this point plus maybe Zinchenko

Only hindsight will tell but I think it's valid.

I certainly prefer it to going big on their defence which is popular in these parts and lets face it Jesus is irrelevant now and it's about picking our other 14!

Currently I only have Jesus and Martinelli but I haven't definitely decided against Saka.

My (controversial) view is that AT THIS MOMENT, Arsenal have best attack in the PL. They're that bit sharper than Liverpool. Spurs and City. They could still be ahead come GW1 and those 3 could haul. The others will catch up soon enough, but Arsenal have the opening fixtures to make that triple a reasonable short-term gamble.

Yeah I'm sold on Jesus and Martinelli.

I had pretty much decided Maddy was my 8m mid but a brace from Saka and Toon sniffing around potentially unsettling Maddy I am currently leaning that way.

          Essentially;
          * I don't play Pepe roulette.
          * Kulu feels dangerous after GW1 with Richarlison there.
          * I'm definitely Robbo over Diaz.
          * I want a mid at that price point.

I'm kinda down to Mount v Saka and Saka on form and on pens is winning it for me atm.

Never been one to care about coverage - every player on their own merits.

Good feeling about nunez, but means sacrificing cancelo..thoughts on this 3-4-3? Alternatively I could get robertson and cancelo over walker and nunez to play 4-4-2:

    Salah mount martinelli bailey (amdreas)
    Haaland jesus nunez

Pretty template team now. Feel like all the starting 11 have passed the eye test in pre-season. Just unsure on the Arsenal attack triple up:

    Meslier
    TAA | Robertson | Cancelo | Perisic
    Salah | Saka | Martinelli | Bailey
    Kane | Jesus

    Ward | N.Williams | Andreas | Archer

If you’re wary of triple Arsenal attack, maybe:
-Perisic to Zinchenko and Martinelli to Rashford
-Perisic to James, Martinelli to Neto

(As you can tell I don’t trust Perisic yet)

He and City will hit peak form soon enough. City for some reason always undercook their pre-season preparations. For me, it's fair enough to give them a couple of gameweeks, but I've money itb to jump onto Haaland when the moment seems right.
