FPL points predictions for Gameweek 3 and beyond 3

LAST SEASON: ATTACK

TotalRank v other Premier League clubs
Goals scored625th
Shots43515th
Shots in the box26915th
Shots on target1667th
Big chances737th
Expected goals (xG)52.8510th

Leicester hit over 60 goals for the third season in a row under Brendan Rodgers, despite the UEFA Europa League/Conference League sideshow and myriad injury issues.

The underlying stats aren’t as impressive, with the Foxes ranked 15th for both goal attempts and shots in the box.

While the overall shot count was way down on those of many other teams, Leicester did carve out quality opportunities with the attacks they had.

Rodgers’ troops were fourth in the Premier League for big chances per shot (16.78%).

Despite the respectable rate of big chances, Leicester still had to spectacularly ‘overachieve’ on the expected goals (xG, above) front to hit the 60-goal mark.

No club came close to matching their whopping xG delta of +9.15.

But if you think that’s unsustainable, the gap between xG and actual goals was even more extreme (+11.86) in 2020/21.

Jamie Vardy (£9.5m) and James Maddison (£8.0m) were a massive part of last season’s overachievement: one’s a clinical finisher from close range, the other possesses a dead eye from distance.

Vardy and Maddison’s combined xG deltas were +7.92, accounting for a big chunk of the overall Foxes figure.

LAST SEASON: DEFENCE

TotalRank v other Premier League clubs*
Goals conceded5914th
Clean sheets717th
Shots conceded56517th
Shots in the box conceded392=18th
Shots on target conceded19218th
Big chances conceded8816th
Expected goals conceded (xGC)70.7717th

Far less impressive were Leicester’s defensive numbers, which are more relegation candidate material than top-eight challenger.

Ranked in the bottom four for the concession of shots, efforts on target, attempts in the box and expected goals (xGC), they were also 17th for clean sheets with a miserable seven.

It could even have been worse: Opta’s xGC data estimated that the Foxes should have shipped over 70 goals, rather than the 59 that actually flew in.

Set plays were a real Achilles heel, as no club allowed more chances from free-kicks and corners (176) or had a worse xGC from dead-ball situations (20.0).

There was some mitigation, however.

NameStarts
Castagne22
Ndidi18
Evans16
Ricardo Pereira13
Justin11
Fofana7

Leicester had rotten luck with injuries last season, with not one of what could feasibly be described as their first-choice back four – Jonny Evans, Ricardo Pereira, James Justin and Wesley Fofana (all £4.5m) – starting more than 16 league games.

Midfield shield Wilfried Ndidi (£5.0m) didn’t fare much better, only making the starting XI on 18 occasions.

Not once was Rodgers able to name those five players in the same team in 2021/22.

Pereira has already succumbed to injury before Gameweek 1, so the very capable deputy Timothy Castagne (£4.5m) looks set to take his place.

The Castagne-Fofana-Evans-Justin back four was in place on just three occasions last season, all of them without Ndidi, with Leicester conceding exactly one goal in each fixture.

OPENING FIXTURES

The opening fixtures aren’t great, with four ‘big six’ sides to come in the first eight Gameweeks.

That sees the Foxes rank a lowly 17th on our Season Ticker for fixture difficulty.

A Brentford side missing arguably both their first-choice centre-halves and a Southampton outfit that the Foxes scored six goals against last season could be favourable opponents in Gameweeks 1 and 3, however.

The time to pounce would seem to be Gameweeks 9-16, the start of which is immediately after the September international break.

Rodgers’ side rise to second in our Season Ticker for that string of games, with two newly promoted sides and Leeds, Wolves and Everton among the opponents to come.

PREDICTED GAMEWEEK 1 LINE-UP

FPL team guides: Leicester - Best players, predicted line-up and more 1

Pereira’s injury should make the back four easy to predict, if it is indeed a back four: Justin could alternatively play as a third centre-half, with Luke Thomas (£4.5m) or Marc Albrighton (£5.0m) fielded at wing-back.

The players further forward almost pick themselves, although Harvey Barnes (£7.0m) was a slight concern after Leicester’s final pre-season friendly on Sunday and will need to be assessed.

Youri Tielemans (£6.5m) was traditionally a secure starter for the Foxes but with the Belgian supposedly wanting to depart the club, he’s not been all that prominent in the pre-season line-ups.

Tielemans was with the weaker half of the squad when two friendlies were contested on the same day on July 23, while he was only a substitute for the final warm-up match against Sevilla on Sunday.

He was, however, the first man off the bench when Pereira got injured early on, so could still feasibly start against Brentford.

This predicted line-up was compiled on August 2, so make sure to check out our Team News tab closer to the Gameweek 1 deadline for the latest updates.

Transfering Neto to Bailey raises two possibilities:

      A) Robbo + Neto
      B) Diaz + Bailey

      and

      X) Tripper + Neto
      Y) Perisic + Bailey

Stick with AX, keeping Neto, or go for one of B or Y?

It's tinker time! Thoughts on this XI? Have 1.0 ITB to spend still. I know I could go Mo, but I've been in the "No Salah" camp so far with thoughts that the goals could be spread around a bit more this season.

      Trent Cancelo Perisic Tripps
      Diaz Martinelli KDB Rashford

Bamford is an interesting choice, but I'm not convinced by the one premium attacker approach. I'm not great with numbers, but I'm sure the more mathematically minded could tell you why the consensus between the pros is that two premiums is the way to go, as opposed to spreading the value.

Yeah, but with the extra wildcard this season I feel like it puts the onus on us to take more risk. How Man U start even if they've had a good preseason is a concern obviously, but Sancho and Dalot look like a promising partnership on the right. Perisic's fitness is a concern, but he did get over 75mins in the last preseason game, and looked good. Martinelli I'm fairly certain is semi nailed on the left, or it's at least his to lose depending on how he starts. Neto with Jimenez's injury has taken a more central role for Wolves, so either that's a good thing or they'll be even less potent in front of goal than last season, but for 5.5m you can't complain too much. Nunez's potential regardless of rotation risk is proving too tempting for me to resist. Being able to have Son in midfield and then maybe switch to De Bruyne is a great option as well. And obviously it will only take two transfers to get either Kane or Haaland.

          A) mount
          Or b) Sancho?
Or c) another 8m but not Diaz

          Also

          1) Ederson + jonny
          2) Raya + perisic?

I like you so I'm inclined to revaluate it to 11/11.

But in all seriousness, Ward and Andreas is where you got the -2 from. Wouldn't start pre-season Pirlo and despite comments here, Ward isn't guaranteed to be first choice come the end of the transfer window.

Alvarez in my team as my differential. But I have a squad to allow for it and if he doesn’t get mins he can get sold.
              Current :

              Son / Dias / Martinelli
              Kane / Jesus / Alvarez

Not long now!! Thoughts would be appreciated...

            Mendy
            James / TAA / Cancelo
            Salah / Bailey / Rashford / Mount / Almiron
            Jesus / Kane

            Ward / Dalot / N.Williams / Greenwood

0.5 in the bank in case Almiron is as bad as previous seasons, although I like at least one punty differential and even if I am a delusional Newcastle fan who knows that Pre-season shouldn't be considered... it seems something has clicked with him recently, even the way he is talking he seems much more confident with Howe's faith in him. Can easily become Neto/Gordon/Andreas/Dewsbury-Hall/another bargain who emerges at 5.5 or under....

              8 or 9/11

              - Rashford is the worst best pick out of United attack assets
              - According to Chelsea fans, Mendy has been rubbish all preseason
              - You're the Newcastle fan so you will know more about Almiron but I'd have thought Wilson is the go-to Newcastle asset

Thanks 🙂 I have been thinking that about Mendy and even James tbh, I was tempted with Perisic rather than James and then Rashford > Sancho with the extra 1 mill. I just wanted to wait and see on Perisic and feel like even if Chelsea are having a bad time, Everton are worse lol

Really balanced! I would consider the 0.5 on Rashford>Grealish, Almiron>Neto, or Mendy>Alisson. I think as it stands though your team is very solid. I don’t love the Chelsea defense double up so my two cents would be to either upgrade or downgrade Mendy. You could downgrade him to Sanchez/Raya and get Martinelli instead of Almiron too!

Yeah i was tempted to get a city mid in, just not sure on which one and Rashford seems a steal at 6.5 if he starts. I did want Sancho instead... Was tempted to do James>Perisic or even Digne and Rashford > Sancho or Grealish/Mahrez
Chelsea rumours do worry me but I was just thinking Everton might be in trouble and so even if Chelsea are bad, they should be ok against Everton... If Ward is a starter for Leicester at 4mill it will change things like!

Almiron is worth a go for the first 2 anyway, after that reassess, Rashford is the one i'd be most worried about with Ronaldo still around

Yeah Rashford is bothering me like, I did want Sancho there instead. I might end up downgrading Mendy and/or James to Perisic/Digne someone similar and doing Rashford > Sancho/Mahrez/Grealish/Foden

What do you mean "In case Almiron is as bad as in previous seasons..."? 😆

Seriously though can't deny he's had a productive preseason I'm not sure he'll maintain current form but if anyone should know you should!

Hammers is my 2nd team (mainly because my other half is West Ham so kind of forced upon me). Wanted to sneak Bowen in somewhere but will wait til City is out the way I think... I was also tempted by Fornals, I really like him, I hope he has a good season! Good luck, have a good season.

Landed on this one for GW1:

            Ward (Sanchez)
            TAA Perisic Walker (Williams, Patterson)
            Salah Son Martinelli Neto Bailey
            Haaland Jesus (4.5)

Ward-Sanchez is an awesome rotation for the first 13 GWs, TAA+Perisic likely the most attacking fullbacks in the league, Walker as Cancelo cover. Going three Mimi with Salah-Son-Haaland, having two in-form Arsenal attackers, and doubling up on the popular value picks (and potentially OOP) of Neto and Bailey.

Only change I’ve mildly considered is Son>Andreas, 4.5>Kane, and using the 0.5 on either Patterson or Sanchez, but I really prefer Son to Kane especially seeing how Son thrived under Conte in the easier fixtures and tougher fixtures alike. In the games against City and Liverpool, Kane dropped back to release Son up the field. That along with the additional points for every Son goal and the CS makes me want Son instead!

Brendan effectively confirmed that saying that they’ll compete but then going on to wax lyrical about Ward and how he should’ve been a starter a long time ago

Sounds like Ward’s spot barring a new signing. I have Sanchez just in case

            Ramsdale
            Trent, Robbo, Cancelo, Trip
            Salah, Foden, Martinelli, Bailey
            Kane, Jesus

He was a Pep favourite last year, looked good when he came on and the other 2 looked poor. So I'd guess he gets the start to impress and won't be rotated too much provided he performs until UCL. Gives me a city attacker for GW2 and allows me to take a view on Haaland for Kane depending on the west ham game.

Good luck with Foden! Maybe start with Kulu first and then switch, Foden didn’t have a preseason so that’s my concern with him for GW1. I think after that he’s going to nail down that spot though!

Tempting but I want to have a FT for Haaland incase he goes mental and I can't not have him for Bou. If he doesn't I'm tempted to gamble on Foden captain.

I'll be hoping for some positive comments in the presser.

I’ve thought about doing the Kane>Haaland Hokey Cokey but it feels so obvious that I feel that it’s going to end up being a mistake

I think both likely score week in GW1 so I’d rather have the transfer in case other things go wrong. But I get it! TOT will likely destroy SOU, I’m glad I have Son+Perisic

I've considered it too but think similar. GW is the main Haaland worry in the first 4 games. And depending on Foden/Haaland performances I may just hope Foden can get even just slightly less points GW2. Whereas i wouldn't have the same faith in Kulu with Kane.

                    RMT:

                    Raya - Forster
                    TAA - Cancelo - Perisic - Zinchenko - Patterson
                    Salah - Mount - Trossard - Neto - Bailey
                    Haaland - Jesus - Archer
                    (0.5 ITB)

                    Depending on late team news...
                    Haaland could be Kane
                    Perisic could be James
                    Raya could be Mendy

Advice is more than welcome. Thanks in advance!

Like Trossard. Dont really understand Patterson over Neco

What about the team they play for? Feel free to convince me to go for Neco.

Can see your point for the first 5 weeks but after that the forest defence will be more settled and fixtures better too. But you are only using your 4 mill player as back up and neco is a Def starter unlike parts when cole comes back.
Your choice but I've gone with neco
                          Cheers

Neco plays for a team who play decent football and have a chance of staying up, whereas Patterson plays for a team that doesn't have a striker and imo looking like relegation candidates...

                    Any thoughts on this please?

                    Ward (Sanchez)
                    TAA Cancelo James White (Neco)
                    Salah Martinelli Bailey (Aaronson) (A.Periera)
                    Jesus, Nunez, Kane/Haaland

Final decision on my team, so which is better:
                    A) Raya, Gabriel, Robertson, Mount
                    B) Ramsdale, James, Perisic, Diaz
                    Thanks!

                      Probably impossible to say.

                      Good luck, trust your self!

                    Preference?

                    1) Cancelo, Diaz, Archer + £1.5m ITB
                    2) Walker, DaSilva, Haaland, £0 ITB.

Currently on 1, but could be tempted with 2 (also have Kane and Jesus up top currently).

                    A) Perisic + 8m Mid - Mount/Saka/City
                    B) Bowen + 5m Def - Gabriel/Tripps/Walker
