FPL team reveal: Why I’ve picked Vardy over Haaland and Kane

With Gameweek 1 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) days away, we’re welcoming back our stellar team of Pro Pundits, Hall of Famers and guest contributors for the new campaign.

Our writers will be providing regular articles and team reveals throughout the new season, with only Premium Members able to access every single one.

Next up is former FPL champion Simon March, who talks through his latest Gameweek 1 plans.

FPL team reveal: Why I've picked Vardy over Haaland and Kane

It’s not often we’re presented with a genuine game-changer in FPL but, this season, I think we might actually have one. Because of the break for the World Cup after Gameweek 16 and the unlimited transfers that FPL managers will have available to them before the restart, playing an early Wildcard is a more viable option than ever.

With this in mind, I almost feel like we owe it to ourselves to approach the opening Gameweeks as aggressively as possible. With my team, I’m intending to approach the first half-dozen Gameweeks of a season in a way that I might normally approach the final six Gameweeks of a typical campaign. Not only does that mean that I’m focusing disproportionately on players with good fixtures during this period but, also, that I’m willing to be less flexible in terms of team structure and take a few more risks than I might normally do, given the handy bailout option that the first Wildcard presents if I get things really wrong.

Of course, I’m not 100% committing to a Wildcard in Gameweek 7 – I’ll have been able to switch out a third of the squad by then just using free transfers – but treating the first six fixtures like a mini-season is the kind of low risk/high reward opportunity that I love in FPL

With all that said, here’s my FPL draft for 2022/23.

Goalkeepers

Xhaka and Moura recalled as Ramsdale starts again

I’ve gone for Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsdale (£5.0) in goal due to his fixtures and Arsenal’s demonstrable strength at the back, which we might expect to improve further with the addition of William Saliba (£4.5m) and Oleksandr Zinchenko (£5.0m). In addition to clean sheets, Ramsdale has a tendency to collect bonus points (14 last season, second only to Liverpool’s Alisson Becker (£5.5m) who managed 15).

My current back-up goalkeeper is Brighton’s own back-up, Jason Steele (£4.0m), because it offers cover if I go for the ‘downgrade’ of Ramsdale to Brighton’s number one, Robert Sanchez (£4.5m), to save money at some point down the line.

I’ve seen enough FPL now to be convinced that two £4.5m goalkeepers is the optimum strategy (provided you pick the right ones, of course) but, since I’m focused on getting everything possible out of the opening six Gameweeks, I’m shelving that approach in favour of trying to maximise the points I can get out of them and, for me, Ramsdale offers the best value route to doing that. I just have to hope he doesn’t get injured in that period.

Defenders

Haaland Foden

Bench Boost draft. Anyone like it?

    Martinez
    Trent, Robertson, Saliba
    Salah (C), Maddison, Saka, Aaronson
    Jesus, Wilson, Bamford
    (Raya, Botman, Castagne, Bailey)

Simon seems fairly set on a gw6 wildcard which seems strange for a number of reasons (Onset of UCL, new transfers not bedded in, fixture swing for the bad teams not the good).
    Gw8 is the one.

What’s the plan for Liverpool players from gw8-11? You will likely have triple and they face Chelsea and then Brighton Arsenal Man City + 2 UCL games in 2 weeks…

BB1, WC11? That's different/interesting... If you're WCing that late, have you consider BB last week before World Cup?

    Raya
    Trent - Perisic - James - Walker
    Saka - Salah(c) - Bailey
    Jesus - Haaland - Nunez

    Ward - Neco - Pereira - Dasilva

Do you think both Perisic & Walker is too risky? I could downgrade Perisic to Trippier and 'upgrade' Raya to Ramsdale. Thoughts?

I watched Spurs v Roma just to see Perisic play and I was very impressed with how forward he was. If he gets the minutes(which I think he will) he is very capable of hauling. He's second for me after TAA

I think we are just the new favourite team for everyone to write about. Neither Maddison nor Fofana will leave this summer.

Tielemans, maybe. Kasper, yes. Hamza, Perez, Praet, Bertrand, Vestergaard etc.. Hopefully.

You must be worried about the lack of transfer activity though? The Athletic did a write up recently about needing to sell but that that list of players you've listed aren't attracting buyers, and even for loans so far only Choudhury and Praet seem to have admirers. If there's ever a season where selling a prized asset for big money becomes a possibility surely it's this one?

      Diaz.

At various points it's been Robbo over Diaz in my drafts but I'm looking at Fulham, Man Utd and Bournemouth and I'm seeing a lot of goals in those games. So perhaps smaller chances of CS than if it was vs Southampton or Everton say and perhaps more chance of Diaz goals than Robbo goals/assists.

Short term only, think long term I'll have Robbo as my 3rd Liverpool player.

Your right, 4 of Chelsea's first 7 games away and the 3 home games against sides who finished in the top 10 last year. City/Arsenal/Liverpool all with 4 home games in the first 7 gameweeks and each has 3 banker home wins in there too!

Decided to try something a little different this year. Going with players whose ownership is lower than 20% at the point of going into my team (e.g. Saka was below 20% when I put him in, but is now higher). Once the season starts, I can't draft in players that are in 20% or more of teams.

    Vardy | Darwin
    Maddison | Kulu | KDB | Saka | Neto
    Zinc | Trippier | Robbo
    Ederson

    (Klaessen, Cucurella, Vestegaard, Taylor)

      You're back! 🙂

Well, its up to you if you think that sort of rule will keep you more engaged. The only thing I'd say 'against' it is that there's still a nice in-between where you have differential combinations without going too boring / too punty, e.g. Son & KDB might be around 20% (havent checked lately) but very, very few managers seem to have both.

That said, this is still a very solid team. I'm really hoping City sweep in for Cucurella though as I think he'd be a much better FPL option at LB there than LCB at Chelsea

        Hello! 🙂

Yah interesting to see the developments with Cucurella. If he goes to Chelsea, do we think he pushes Chilwell higher or takes his place?

Yah, I did think about that - a mixture between low ownership and some classic players. But I'm quite enjoying the arbitrary limit I've added. I was also toying with a 10% team:

        Vardy | Wilson
        Maddison | Mount | Foden | Kulu | Sterling
        Zinc | Chilwell/Walker | Digne
        Pope

Could be a bit of both I imagine. Can cover LWB if Alonso leaves, but maybe also play LCB in a similar vein to how he plays at Brighton when Trossard is LWB - ie. pushing high & wide, allowing Chilwell to get a bit narrower into the box. At least at Chelsea they probably need him to start asap whereas Pep might take his time

Yah makes a lot of sense. It was actually a choice between him and Trossard for the XV. One thing about this 20% approach is you can really spread the £ about.

      What's the point, unless you're in a No-stars mini-league?
And is 20% the ideal limit if so?
Or do you have a target to go with it, such as seeing if you can finish in the top million?

        1) The point is to try something different in my eighth year of playing. I'm not going to win the overall thing and will probably never better my first and best placement - 7,531st - when I dedicated a lot of time to it. So why not add something else to make it fun.

        2) I was toying with 10% limit:

        Vardy | Wilson
        Maddison | Mount | Foden | Kulu | Sterling
        Zinc | Chilwell | Digne
        Pope

        3) No target: just see what happens!

Not sure I'd do it for FPL but in the Sky game you can create 2 teams. I made a rule that the 2nd team can only be players with 5% ownership or less when season starts or transferring them in. Makes it somewhat more fun anyways. Good Luck!

OK thanks for the heads up. I don't really trust Leicester yet, or Brighton for CS's. Dalot is nailed and I think will get attacking points with Sancho.

Anyone afraid of not having any tasty differentials at the start?
Can't really decide whether I should dig deeper and get some more risky and less template picks or e.g. going Kane over Haaland will be enough for now.

The template disaster of GW1 will be delicious

        No.

More I tinker the more I become template. As it currently stands only Digne in my team (who will start) isn't template.

Early wildcard option if it all falls down very quickly. Keep up with the masses if it's the right selection.

I will start with Salah and play it safe with such high ownership but i feel KDB will have an incredible season

He is the best midfielder in the world, on fire last season even though he hardly played much first half, and now he seems to be playing higher up with Haaland to assist

He is also a bap machine, one return and he likely gets the 3 baps unlike Salah

He "only" needs 15 goals and 15 assists to finish on around 230 points. If he can stay fit, a big if, can anyone see him smashing that score?

I think he's definitely in for a big season. Quite unsure how I'll feel about whether to stick with Haaland or try move to KDB when we get to around GW5 and the CL kicks in

Impact of Maddison to NUFC (if it happens):

Feels like Maddison move will have impact on Trippier who is currently on set-piece duties as it will then be shared between Maddison and Himself.

Not sure who takes set-pieces for Leicester when Maddison is not on the pitch - however it would be good watchlist candidate.

            Anyother impact people can suggest?

For me it is simple. If you cannot vision Haaland outscoring Kane which cannot be determined at this point then go with Kane who is proven.

Not that I have either but this should make sense.

Convinced this is the best team that can be built….but it’s 0.5 over, so close!
Any ideas how to save that 0.5 please?

              Meslier
              Trent | Cancelo | 4.5
              Salah | Martinelli | Neto | Bailey
              Kane | Hauland | Jesus

              Ward | Neco | Andreas | Taylor
