FPL team reveal: Why I’ve picked Vardy over Haaland and Kane

With Gameweek 1 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) days away, we’re welcoming back our stellar team of Pro Pundits, Hall of Famers and guest contributors for the new campaign.

Our writers will be providing regular articles and team reveals throughout the new season, with only Premium Members able to access every single one.

Next up is former FPL champion Simon March, who talks through his latest Gameweek 1 plans.

FPL team reveal: Why I've picked Vardy over Haaland and Kane

It’s not often we’re presented with a genuine game-changer in FPL but, this season, I think we might actually have one. Because of the break for the World Cup after Gameweek 16 and the unlimited transfers that FPL managers will have available to them before the restart, playing an early Wildcard is a more viable option than ever.

With this in mind, I almost feel like we owe it to ourselves to approach the opening Gameweeks as aggressively as possible. With my team, I’m intending to approach the first half-dozen Gameweeks of a season in a way that I might normally approach the final six Gameweeks of a typical campaign. Not only does that mean that I’m focusing disproportionately on players with good fixtures during this period but, also, that I’m willing to be less flexible in terms of team structure and take a few more risks than I might normally do, given the handy bailout option that the first Wildcard presents if I get things really wrong.

Of course, I’m not 100% committing to a Wildcard in Gameweek 7 – I’ll have been able to switch out a third of the squad by then just using free transfers – but treating the first six fixtures like a mini-season is the kind of low risk/high reward opportunity that I love in FPL

With all that said, here’s my FPL draft for 2022/23.

Goalkeepers

Xhaka and Moura recalled as Ramsdale starts again

I’ve gone for Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsdale (£5.0) in goal due to his fixtures and Arsenal’s demonstrable strength at the back, which we might expect to improve further with the addition of William Saliba (£4.5m) and Oleksandr Zinchenko (£5.0m). In addition to clean sheets, Ramsdale has a tendency to collect bonus points (14 last season, second only to Liverpool’s Alisson Becker (£5.5m) who managed 15).

My current back-up goalkeeper is Brighton’s own back-up, Jason Steele (£4.0m), because it offers cover if I go for the ‘downgrade’ of Ramsdale to Brighton’s number one, Robert Sanchez (£4.5m), to save money at some point down the line.

I’ve seen enough FPL now to be convinced that two £4.5m goalkeepers is the optimum strategy (provided you pick the right ones, of course) but, since I’m focused on getting everything possible out of the opening six Gameweeks, I’m shelving that approach in favour of trying to maximise the points I can get out of them and, for me, Ramsdale offers the best value route to doing that. I just have to hope he doesn’t get injured in that period.

Defenders

Who played the most minutes over the March international break?

There must be a lot of salty managers from last season who had underwhelming BB's and are using it for GW1 this year just to get rid of it - I really don't understand that. With the 3rd WC this year, you'll be able to restructure your squad to at least bring in some productive fodder if you don't want to have much cash on the bench. To start the season with money on the bench seems a waste and we really don't know which bargain players are going to be productive. Why not save for later?

Can someone give the counter argument?

      I agree.

Just some good earlier fixtures for the cheap defenders is tempting people I think.

I used mine effectively in a double GW so certainly not salty, however I am using it GW1 this season.
My counter argument is there won't be as many double GWs this season (last season an anomaly) and the triple captain and freehit cards are better used on them in my opinion.

Fully expect there to be double-game weeks

        GW34
        GW37
        Due to cups

Also used mine effectively in a dgw last season.

To counter your counter-argument; 😉 Won't there be fixture congestion, and possibly additional doubles, due to the World Cup?

        1. LangerznMash

World cup shouldn't affect fixtures as there aren't any fixtures in the World Cup period.

BB is only useful if you plan for it or just get dumb luck
so I can't give you any counter-argument, it has to be planned for and if done correctly could gain you some rank

I think some just regard it as a hindrance to planning an optimal starting 11 later in the season.

If it's out of the way, you can focus future WC's on the best possible team rather than spreading the fuinds.

You need to also factor in that lots of people have multiple accounts. You try BB or TC on 10 different teams in GW1. Whichever one hits the lottery is the team you keep playing with for the rest of the season.

    A) Son | Meslier | Neco/Andreas

    B) Haaland | Ward | Neto

Personally I'd give it a few weeks before considering perisic, he's not fit yet. Downgrading to one of the many decent 5.0s gives you 2.0 to upgrade Bruno to an 8.0... Bruno likely to start the season in a deeper playmaker role with shelvey injured and Almiron in form

I'm pleased my team looks similar to this one... finding it very difficult to choose between the 8.0 mids, so I've gone for 3!... I might still swap Mahrez > Foden/Diaz, pending team news... and I'm worried I've been caught up in a bit of arsenal overhype, so maybe Ramsdale > Mendy... any thoughts/feedback appreciated...

Haaland could be Kane, but might as well start like this as I want Haaland C GW2.

And really hope Kulu can keep up with his numbers from late last season, afraid no Kane/Son will kill me. Having Kane over Son 2nd half of last season made 2 opponents pass me in my ML, falling down from OR 180 to 9000...

Yeah, I'm leaning towards starting Haaland too. The reality is, there are probably going to be some transfers we all want to do in the first two weeks, and it will be nice to have the extra FT available.

Agree. And can't see Kane looking very much sharper eighter in preseason, would avoided both from the start if it wasn't for the team structure which needs a 11.5 fwd spot this year.

Yeah, I'm kind of leaning that way too. A starting 11 of:

        Ramsdale
        Trent Cancelo James Perisic Walker
        Salah Diaz Martinelli
        Haaland Jesus

looks equal parts template and delicious.

Downside is that it costs 0.5 more, so no Bailey on the bench.

Would keep Cancelo in your team. The points and bonuspoints potential is bigger compared to Dias'. Defence looking solid, would not worry to much about that. You can do Tripps to Perisic with that 0.5 still ATB.

How about this team? Should I pick Dalot as a 4,5m defender or maybe James Justin? Want to have a certain starter for 4,5m, but can't pick more Arsenal.

    Ramsdale (Ward)
    TAA Cancelo Trippier Dalot (Neco)
    Salah Saka L.Diaz Neto (Andreas)
    Jesus Haaland (Archer)

I'd be tempted to go Castagne from the 4.5 lot.

Yes, he is tempting too with Pereira out injured

    A) Walker, Saka
    B) Cancelo, Martinelli

B for me. Cancelo offers so much more than Walker.

    Feedback?

    Meslier
    Walker / Dalot / TAA / Trippier
    Neto / Salah / Rashford
    Kane / Jesus / Haaland

    Bench: Ward, Bailey, Williams, Andreas

Why did you pick Dalot over Justin or Castagne? I am still in doubt which of those players to pick. Andersen of Crystal Palace is also a nice option from GW 5 onwards

I don’t trust Palace. Dalot will start and is a cheap option into a top 6 team with good fixtures

That's a lot upfront. Historically, not the place for maximum points....

OK, now I really do need some help because I've got myself all confused. I was REALLY HAPPY with my team of:

    Ramsdale
    Robertson Cancelo Tripper Zinchenko
    Salah Sancho Neto Diaz
    Jesus Kane

However, Sancho's sickness, Newcastles fixtures and another comment about piling in on the opening six fixtures as heavily as possible have made me think another way. The best opening 8 fixures fall to City, Brighton, Liverpool in defence and Brighton, Cit, Brentford, Liverpool in attack. That's making me strongly think about this team:

    Ederson
    TAA Cancelo Robertson Dunk
    Salah KdB Trossard Bailey
    Jesus Toney

    Thoughts? What would be better?

I think Arsenal at the back is a nice point, they have interesting games and I expect some cleansheets, besides you would be having 3 city players and no easy to move to Haaland or any other asset from city if thiey just star

. I like Trossard choice, KDB we all know but I am more for Kane or Son, I think they will start brave and it may be a problem with no representation from that side.

In other words I would keep Ramsdale, Kane to give you chances to adapt to Haaland if he explotes, and choose a midfielder on 8.0 like Mount or Mads which I believe you could effort

What do you think about Lingard, can he be a good choice?

Could be if he replicates his West Ham form

    RMT

    Ramsdale (4.0)
TAA, Robbo, Cancelo (4.0, 4.0) (Set and forget)
    Bailey, Salah, Mount, Guimares, Aaronson
    Kane, Jesus (4.5)

    Too much spent in defence?

Not bad, is similar to me but I have Neto, Grealish and a5.5 defender to decide. I have not seen Aaronson, is it worth?

He had a hat-trick of assists in the last pre-season game and seems to be on frees as well. Leeds fixtures not bad. Feel i need to have at least 1 leeds player and he's the cheapest attacking option
        Bamford 7.5, Rodrigo/Harrison 6.0

Surely Simon's team is better if he downgrades Saka to Martinelli & upgrades Vardy to Kane ...
