FPL team guides: Manchester United – Best players, predicted line-up + more

Gameweek 1 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) is drawing ever nearer and we’re profiling all 20 Premier League teams before the season starts.

We continue our team-by-team guides with Manchester United, seeing what their players have to offer.

You can check out our Nottingham Forest, Fulham and Bournemouth analysis in our Promoted series.

LAST SEASON: ATTACK

Expected goals (xG)62.276th

It was a disappointing follow-up to Manchester United’s second-placed finish of 2020/21. Fans were back in stadiums again, big money had been spent on Jadon Sancho (£7.5m) whilst Cristiano Ronaldo (£10.5m) returned to the club after 12 years away.

Yet manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer left in November, following a 4-1 defeat at newly-promoted Watford, as the Red Devils made it five seasons without a trophy.

Under the stewardship of Solskjaer, caretaker Michael Carrick and interim boss Ralf Rangnick, their underlying attacking stats roughly match their sixth-placed ranking, although their 57 goals were bested by seven other teams.

Highlights included the opening day 5-1 win over Leeds United, where Bruno Fernandes (£10.0m) netted a hat-trick, and entertaining 3-2 home wins over Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur – the latter with Ronaldo’s own set of three.

The 37-year-old finished as top scorer with 18 league goals but has barely featured in friendlies, as reports continue to insist that he wants to leave the club immediately.

However, it hasn’t clouded a promising pre-season under new boss Erik ten Hag. Announced with several weeks of 2021/22 to go, he arrived from Ajax with an air of confidence and time to plan a new era for this underachieving giant.

LAST SEASON: DEFENCE

TotalRank v other Premier League clubs
Goals conceded5713th
Clean sheets8=12th
Shots conceded51112th
Shots in the box conceded32511th
Shots on target conceded18014th
Big chances conceded7513th
Expected goals conceded (xGC)61.3011th

A huge problem for ten Hag to fix is the Man United defence. Ranking in the lower mid-table for allowing attempts, big chances and shots on target, their eight clean sheets were fewer than new boys Brentford and relegated Burnley, worsened only by four others.

Furthermore, there were an embarrassing six occasions where they conceded at least four goals – including against Manchester City, both times versus Liverpool and a May meltdown at Brighton and Hove Albion.

Goalkeeper David De Gea (£5.0m) made the third-most saves and played all 38 matches. Fernandes was the only other to exceed 28 starts.

From an FPL perspective, only Watford totalled fewer defensive goals, with solitary contributions from Harry Maguire (£5.0m) and Raphael Varane (£5.0m). Assists were better, thanks to a combined seven from left-backs Alex Telles (£5.0m) and Luke Shaw (£5.0m).

OPENING FIXTURES

The tougher fixtures against last season’s top five are spread out fairly evenly throughout the early months, meaning ten Hag’s side never gets a truly good or bad run of fixtures.

This is backed by our Season Ticker, which ranks fixtures for both difficulty and relative difficulty. The latter constantly keeps Man United as sixth-best for the opening four, six, eight and ten encounters.

Gameweek 1 can see them gain revenge on Brighton for the 4-0 loss, with Liverpool soon back to attempt another 5-0.

Alright final call, views much appreciated!

    Ward

    TAA - Robbo - Cancelo - Dalot

    Salah - 8,0 - ? - Bailey

    Kane - Jesus

    Sanchez - Neco - Andreas - Archer

    A) Mount + Martinelli + 1

    B) Saka + Rashford + 0,5

Any other suggestions for those two places and why?

I prefer Bailey over Neto or any other 5,5-6,0 and no other 5,0-5,5 than possibly Trippier or Walker will make me upgrade Dalot.

    Thanks!

This is my base case but then I’m left with 1,0 ITB. I’m good with 0,5 but 1,0 is 0,5 too much. What would you use it for, considering the above?

Thanks - yeah Perisic was in before Dalot but not loving Contes comments about his lack of match fitness and Chelsea GW2 combined with Spurs’s decent LWB coverage - too much of a risk at the moment although I like the player and will probably have him later. Trippier I feel will underwhelm his owners, Walker is a good shout. But that mean defensive double ups on both Liverpool and City.. I could also go double LEI 4,0 keeper and upgrade Dalot to James, but I guess that is asking for trouble..!

Instead of 1.0M in the bank, I went with Ederson in goal.

Only in recent times due to the rise of the false 9. Historically. ie in the days of Drogba, Torres, Augero etc your forward line always got you the points. I have a string suspicion that the Striker is gonna make a big come back this year.

Yes, I'd say the 12-13 season was the pivotal year (though RVP was still key):

Bale Mata Hazard Walcott Cazorla - Fellaini Nolan Michu

I have been thinking about it all week, that .5 has pushed me to do it.

Only worry is lack of flexibility, obviously not a long term strategy, but I don't mind an early WC if it goes really wrong.

Definitely prefer the first one. Zinchenko is at risk from Tierney. I doubt Cucurella goes straight into the starting 11. And Rashford has CR7, last season's awfulness and a new manager to deal with...

    Now stuck with a 4-4-2 or a 5-3-2

    A. 4-4-2 (with the classic 8.0 mid)

    Raya
    TAA, Robbo, Perisic, Cancelo (Neco)
    Bailey, Mount, Martinelli, Salah (Andreas)
    Kane, Jesus (Archer)

    B.

    Ramsdale
    TAA, Robbo Perisic James, Cancelo
Bailey, Martinelli, Salah (Andreas, Neto (or similar)
    Kane, Jesus (Archer)

B offers me an escape route for Bailey as well

This great piece has really got me to think how important is the 8.0 midfielder slot for the first 6 GWs so so.

    1. AD105
      • 7 Years

I’m having virtually exactly the same battle at the minute with pretty much the same 2 teams, 4-4-2 seems safer and offers more flexibility but can’t help but feel those defenders outscore their equivalent mids

yeah this is my dilemma too. If I went Trippier for the first couple (instead of James) you can go to 6.5 But alas I don't like the options there either. Zaha/Eze looks good GW4-8 as well once I get off the Bailey train for a couple of weeks so Neto goes to Eze or a 4.5 fodder goes to Zaha on B.

Having so many options on 8.0 is tempting though but there prices will quickly move up or down depending on their starts

Agreed, I’m now leaning towards this 3-5-2 with 0.5 ITB

          Ederson
          TAA Robbo Cancelo James Perisic
          Salah Martinelli Bailey
          Kane Jesus

Actually going Ederson>Raya, and James> Cancelo give you a 8.0 Dunas Dog

Depends if Cancello explodes in the first 4 weeks or so.

    Ramsdale
    Taa robbo cancelo perisic xxx
    Salah xxx bailey (xxx andreas)
    Haaland jesus (archer)

    A....James martinelli neto

    B....trippier saka dasilva

Neto likely to be on the bench the first few weeks with option A so not sure he is worth having

B gives me the 8m price point but obviously no James

      Tough, like my post above.

The 8.0 wont be 8.0 for long.

They will soon be 7.9 or 8.1 or 2 if they FLY Flynny

      I think I like B better

Thanks. My main issue is that I have been on A for a few weeks - and don't always like to chop and change so late!

But think B might be better...cheers

this is kinda of my final dilemma too.

          Now stuck with a 4-4-2 or a 5-3-2

          A. 4-4-2 (with the classic 8.0 mid)

          Raya
          TAA, Robbo, Perisic, Cancelo (Neco)
          Bailey, Mount, Martinelli, Salah (Andreas)
          Kane, Jesus (Archer)

          B.

          Ramsdale
          TAA, Robbo Perisic James, Cancelo
Bailey, Martinelli, Salah (Andreas, Neto (or similar)
          Kane, Jesus (Archer)

B offers me an escape route for Bailey as well

Or do I go A now and get my 8.0 spot sorted in mOunt destroys Everton, but so could James 🙂

    Non-template team alert!

    Ederson
    TAA Robbo James Perisic
    Mount Saka Sancho Bailey
    Kane Haaland

Obviously risky to go without Salah and other LIV attackers, with only double def from LIV, but how does it look? The idea is to rotate between Kane and Haaland as captains, with the option to cap TAA in any standout fixture for LIV.

    Cheers for any feedback!

I think it's pretty good for a non-Salah team. If you think the premium strikers are going to do well this year, then it could work out well. It's pretty template apart from that I guess.

        Thanks!

I got burned really hard with my no-Salah approach beginning of last season, with Ronaldo and Lukaku failing me hard, but I think Kane and Haaland surely will do better...

Yolo or something! Salah surely cannot average 10points per game for the 10 first GWs again!

I might still have Jesus instead of Saka though, but I feel Saka slightly edges it with pens.

Not big at the back or threemium but I like the balance in mid, any suggested changes?

    Ward
    TAA-Walker-Patterson
    Salah-Son-Bilva-Mart-Mount

    Iverson-Nico-Vest-Greenwood

    Thoughts?

    1. EgyptianKing

      Personally:

      - Don’t love Bilva as an FPL pick
      - Wouldn’t be very conmfortable starting Patterson

Good differential picks and exciting team though

      1. ricpenno
        • 1 Year

Bilva admittedly is a panic based Man C punt as I want cover and looks nailed. Not sure between Grealish, Mahrez, Foden who starts. Don’t want to drop value anywhere else So could change to template Neto or maybe Rashford…

    2. BeWater
      • 3 Years

I like it but I would downgrade Bilva and get a big name wing back.

You will get criticism that it is too light at the back, and too hard to move to Kane or Haaland if they explode early on, which I would probably agree with. But it's something different. Go with your gut mate, if you are happy roll on

It does worry me but one of the 4m keepers will be Leic Number 1 and 2 x 4m def are nailed.
