FPL team guides: Manchester United – Best players, predicted line-up + more

Gameweek 1 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) is drawing ever nearer and we’re profiling all 20 Premier League teams before the season starts.

We continue our team-by-team guides with Manchester United, seeing what their players have to offer.

You can check out our Nottingham Forest, Fulham and Bournemouth analysis in our Promoted series.

It was a disappointing follow-up to Manchester United’s second-placed finish of 2020/21. Fans were back in stadiums again, big money had been spent on Jadon Sancho (£7.5m) whilst Cristiano Ronaldo (£10.5m) returned to the club after 12 years away.

Yet manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer left in November, following a 4-1 defeat at newly-promoted Watford, as the Red Devils made it five seasons without a trophy.

Under the stewardship of Solskjaer, caretaker Michael Carrick and interim boss Ralf Rangnick, their underlying attacking stats roughly match their sixth-placed ranking, although their 57 goals were bested by seven other teams.

Highlights included the opening day 5-1 win over Leeds United, where Bruno Fernandes (£10.0m) netted a hat-trick, and entertaining 3-2 home wins over Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur – the latter with Ronaldo’s own set of three.

The 37-year-old finished as top scorer with 18 league goals but has barely featured in friendlies, as reports continue to insist that he wants to leave the club immediately.

However, it hasn’t clouded a promising pre-season under new boss Erik ten Hag. Announced with several weeks of 2021/22 to go, he arrived from Ajax with an air of confidence and time to plan a new era for this underachieving giant.

LAST SEASON: DEFENCE

TotalRank v other Premier League clubs
Goals conceded5713th
Clean sheets8=12th
Shots conceded51112th
Shots in the box conceded32511th
Shots on target conceded18014th
Big chances conceded7513th
Expected goals conceded (xGC)61.3011th

A huge problem for ten Hag to fix is the Man United defence. Ranking in the lower mid-table for allowing attempts, big chances and shots on target, their eight clean sheets were fewer than new boys Brentford and relegated Burnley, worsened only by four others.

Furthermore, there were an embarrassing six occasions where they conceded at least four goals – including against Manchester City, both times versus Liverpool and a May meltdown at Brighton and Hove Albion.

Goalkeeper David De Gea (£5.0m) made the third-most saves and played all 38 matches. Fernandes was the only other to exceed 28 starts.

From an FPL perspective, only Watford totalled fewer defensive goals, with solitary contributions from Harry Maguire (£5.0m) and Raphael Varane (£5.0m). Assists were better, thanks to a combined seven from left-backs Alex Telles (£5.0m) and Luke Shaw (£5.0m).

OPENING FIXTURES

The tougher fixtures against last season’s top five are spread out fairly evenly throughout the early months, meaning ten Hag’s side never gets a truly good or bad run of fixtures.

This is backed by our Season Ticker, which ranks fixtures for both difficulty and relative difficulty. The latter constantly keeps Man United as sixth-best for the opening four, six, eight and ten encounters.

Gameweek 1 can see them gain revenge on Brighton for the 4-0 loss, with Liverpool soon back to attempt another 5-0.

I'm a Spurs fan and love Kane but I'm going Haaland because I don't see where I could captain Kane in the first 5 weeks. Whereas Haaland could be a captain shout in GW2 and GW5. GW6 would be the first time I'd captain Kane.

    A) Ederson - Cancelo - Jesus

    OR

    B) Ward - Walker - Haaland

Can easily have Saka as my £8.0m mid, and already have Martinelli. No other city attackers at present.

    Thoughts appreciated!

Good to see a proper 15 man squad!

I quite like B, maybe Martinelli instead of Guimaraes?

Or C: ASM, Mbuemo and 0.5 to upgrade White to Gabriel, Ait-Nouri to Trippier or Darwin to Vardy?

      1. LFC
        • 1 Year
        1 year, 8 months ago

Will martinelli start every game? Ideally didn’t want to double on arsenal attack as wanted to spread choices to other teams.

Issue with mbuemo is it won’t allow me to swap between 352 and 343 as easily - wanted 3rd forward to be more of a game threat.

Also would you make any other changes?

At risk of walking straight into the Leicester goalkeeping trap, I think I'm ready to roll.

    Iversen Ward
    Trent Robbo Walker Trippier Patterson
    Salah Mount Mahrez Bailey Andreas
    Kane Jesus Undav

I think he's the cheapest option that both gets decent minutes and is capable of scoring from limited opportunities. I can see him becoming first choice eventually.

        1. Yes Ndidi

Should have said its a 442 that could become a 433 depending on how Undav and Bailey look

Slim chance for Undav to play- still a non-playing bench fodder. I would either downgrade to 4.5 fodder to save the money or upgrade to 6.0 if you want a playing bench forward.

The gap between GW1 and the end of the window puts me off. If they do sign a new keeper you'll need to find 0.5 or 1M and two transfers to get a playing keeper.

    3. Bob B
      • 10 Years
      1 year, 8 months ago

Would be strange if they didnt, Ward has played 1 match for Leicester since 2018 and Iverson is a Championship keeper. Unless they believe he's ready to take a step up?

    4. Yes Ndidi
      • 4 Years

They might, but its not the end of the world if they do. Best case it can be dealt with by an early first WC, worst case its -4 to sort out.
Honestly, I don't think they'll actively search for one, given both keepers are half decent in their own right, but they might end up with Dubravka tacked onto the Maddison deal.

    5. ebb2sparky
      • 13 Years

It seems they are broke so I’m guessing they won’t sign another keeper that’s any better but I agree it is a risk.

Scoring points with your goalkeeper feels a lot more based on luck. Imo they are more fixture proof. So why not use the extra cash to spice up the rest of your team? If it doesn't work out, it only costs 0.5 to upgrade to Raya for example.

Are there any 4,0m goalkeeper that got a chance to play what so ever? If. If, who’s closest? Don’t want Gazza because of high ownership which means upcoming price drop.

And the same question regarding 4,5m forward (don’t want Greenwood)

I currently have Mount and Saka. Both should be nailed. Both young and should still be improving. Both on some set-pieces and possibly pens. Decent fixtures for both.

Mahrez I just don't want to go there with the minutes in question. Kulu I've had in and out of my team, I'm just not sure if he can keep up his returns from last season and I'm a little less sure on Spurs being free-scoring as some on here are. Maddison I also had in a draft but speculation around transfer is not ideal and Leicester not as good a team all round.

Spurs fans - how many game weeks would you predict Doherty stays in the side?

In a 343 Doherty is our best RWB. I think he's good until the CL kicks off. I can't see Conte throwing Spence in for a while especially after the comments about him being a 'club signing'. Royal is better in a back 4.

Interesting - will he get subbed off a lot you think?

He might but maybe not in the first few GWs.

Do you think Doherty is a better pick than Perisic, FPL-wise?

I'm getting Perisic myself. Reguilon was getting in some good positions but couldn't finish. Perisic is quality and two footed. Can see him creating chances and taking good shots.

Same as every other team I guess but here goes.

    Ramsdale
    Cancelo/TAA/James/Perisic
    Salah/Neto/Martinelli/Diaz
    Kane/Jesus

Really Diaz Is there to swap around if needed, had Kdb in with Robbo over Trent etc..

The last dilemma for me too. Trippier also in my thoughts but think I'm going Doherty.

Is Neco Williams a guaranteed starter for Forest?

      Yes, assuming he's fit.

100%. We paid 17m for Neco as a replacement for Djed Spence and he will be first choice. Biancone can play RWB and will cover in case of injury but can also play RCB.

Think I’m happy with my GW1 BB team:
    Ward
    Cancelo,James,Trent,Robbo
    Salah,Bailey,Martinelli,Neto
    Haaland,Jesus

    Sanchez,Almiron,Trippier,Taylor

Gives me a solid bench and at least something off template to start the season

      Commendable. Good luck!

Don’t BB when you have a player (Taylor) on your bench who is very unlikely to play. Brennan will start up front for Forest with either Awoniyi or Surridge. The other will probably come on at some stage. Taylor is properly fourth choice.

I'm left with one final conundrum, opinions please:
    Robbo with 0ITB
    Perisic with 1.5ITB
I know everyone will say Robbo but I'm a tad wary of pool double up straight away. I'm not seeing an obvious way to spend the extra cash just yet based on fixtures and makes it easy for me to go to a 6.5 or 7 mid if someone emerges. Rest of team:

    Ramsdale Ward
    TAA Cancelo Trippier Neco ???
    Salah Bowen Neto Bailey Andreas
    Kane Jesus Plange

Neto to Martinelli would be a popular upgrade I guess if you're looking to spend the extra.

B and get a Pool attacker.

I can understand arguments for both, I think Robbo is still long-term, Perisic after GW4 could be risky with CL games kicking in. I never like defensive double-ups but TAA and Robbo are unique given attacking potential, and they do have a really, really nice run. Like the team by the way, nice to see Bowen in there.

Not at all. May affect sterling and havertz.

It will affect him. There will be rotation. He's not gonna play 38 games. 30 at most this season.

Rotation probably. Mount still integral to them. Maybe he shifts to CM as well
