FPL team reveals: 4-4-2 with Diaz as the ‘third’ Liverpool player

With Gameweek 1 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) almost upon us, we’re welcoming back our stellar team of Pro Pundits, Hall of Famers and guest contributors for the new campaign.

Our writers will be providing regular articles and team reveals throughout the new season, with only Premium Members able to access every single one.

Next up is five-time top-1k finisher and Scout’s Deputy Editor Tom Freeman, who talks through his Gameweek 1 plans.

The FFS Pro Pundits 27

On the eve of the new FPL season, I’m ready to share my Gameweek 1 team.

I’ve opted for a 4-4-2 formation which includes big-hitters Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) and Erling Haaland (£11.5m), as well as two outfield substitutes who should both get plenty of minutes.

If you’re anything like me, then tinkering will undoubtedly continue right up until deadline, but it does feel like I’m almost there with this latest draft.

AARON RAMSDALE

I usually start with a £4.5m/£4.0m ‘keeper combo, but this year I am spending a bit more on Aaron Ramsdale (£5.0m). The 24-year-old finished with a very decent 4.0 points per match last season, despite a late run of blanks which coincided with an injury to Thomas Partey (£5.0m). Arsenal were significantly weaker at the back without the Ghanaian, conceding an average of 0.96 goals per game in matches he appeared, compared to 1.64 without him. They also struggled to control matches, so the return of their best defensive midfielder is huge, as is adding Oleksandr Zinchenko (£5.0m) into the mix. It’s also worth noting that Arsenal have a great run of fixtures to start the season – they only play Manchester United from last season’s top six in the first eight Gameweeks.

Who played the most minutes over the March international break?

This season's budget midfield selection is shocking tbh, so picking Neco in defence seems a wasted spot. I'd rather own the likes of Walker, Trippier, Perisic, and evenLamptey or Ait Nouri before wasting money on Neto and Bailey etc. 532 might be on the cards

I think you must have him in your team, preferably on the bench.

Not being biased but Doucoure will be an excellent pick at 5.0m when Palace fixtures ease. Will be nailed & will get plenty of assists. Wait & see...

Agreed. I am on 5 at the back for the same reason.

As for flexibility, I think 5 at the back is way more flexible.

It is way easier to move a 5 million defender to another 5 million defender.

If Neto or Bailey do not work out, there is no sideways moves if they don’t work out.

        TAA Robbo Cancelo Perisic Doherty

      Agree with you.

However, the second bench mid in 5-3-2 will cost you at least 5.0m (no other nailed 4.5m mid except Andreas).
      Bailey + Neco costs 9.0m.
      Walker + bench costs 10.0m.

With 5 subs, I don’t think the bench will be nearly as important as in years past.

I don’t think we will see many players miss out completely anymore. If a wing back doesn’t start (TAA, Persic, Doh), I fully expect cameos at the end of the game. Sure, in past seasons you would get those 2 points off the bench but now you only get 1. I don’t see it mattering at all.

Is it rational to pick Mount over Saka to avoid the Arsenal triple up in attack even though I think Saka is the better pick?

    1. fploutcast

I think Mount is on par with Saka and spreads the risk. Everton and Leeds in the first 3 is tasty.

If you think Saka is the better pick, then it is better to buy Saka.

However, thought that I would mention Mount had a ppg of 5.3 while Saka had a ppg of 4.7 last season. Not that it matters this season, but still.

      Doherty. Will play every match.

He will start 2 out of 3 and then get a cameo in the 3rd. Conte can afford to sub out wingback for wingbacks this year with 5 subs a match.

    Bottomed - sorry.

    Alisson
    Trippier Ait-Nouri Saliba

    Total budget: (5.5, 5.0, 4.5, 4.5 = 19.5)

I have gone cheap to get big upfront. I’ve got two top 6 defences, alongside a traditionally (or expected) solid defence in Wolves and Newcastle, but good opening fixtures.

Very similar to mine above. Basically Bailey vs a 5 mil defender.

I think I like the upside of the 5 mil defenders and the ease of swapping to another 5 mil defender if it doesn’t work out. It will be difficult to replace Bailey without a hit.

      Changed to

      Reya (Ward)
      TAA Robertson cancelo Peresic James
      Salah Son bailey McNeil (Martinelli)
      Jesus (greenwood Taylor)

Second option leaves nothing in the bank but I think it's worth it to get Son in?

How risky is going Ward/Iverson over 4.5/Ward? I guess Leicester could sign another keeper, but otherwise is any 4.5 likely to massively outscore the Leicester keeper over first 6 games?

Ward rotates very well with Sanchez so if you are thinking of using him that’s the way I’d go

A transfer waiting to happen. With Fofana maybe leaving their defence isn’t looking great. Would rather have Justin or castagne as there could a return or two in them

As I see it, Leicester are not going looking for another keeper, but might end up with one as makeweight on one of their sales (Dubravka would be my worry with the Maddison deal). The Leicester defence as it stands now with Justin Soy Evans Fofana and Castagne all available is better than a lot of teams whose 4.5m keepers are being mentioned on here all the time. I don't see a problem, and if it is, its not the end of the world to put right.

Tom’s team is the exact first 11 I picked when the game launched, hmm. Is this team better or has my tinkering downgraded me?

    Ramsdale

    TAA Cancelo Robbo Tripps

Salah Mount Martinelli Bailey

Haaland Jesus
    (Ward, Neco, Andreas, 4.5)

Happy new season to you all!

    Which team?
2nd is a triple premium option!
Feel Robbo covers TAA and you can’t cover Son really so maybe B is worth a shout! Quite like some of the cheap options this year.

    A - Ederson - Ward
    TAA Robbo James Trippier -Pattersn
    Salah(c) Martinelli Bailey -Neto Pere
    Haland Jesus Wilson

    B - Ward - Sanchez
    Robbo Gabriel White -Pattersn Neco
    Salah Son(c) Bailey Neto -Pereira
    Haland Jesus Wilson

B with Ward, Iverson and 4.5 def instead of Paterson

Think Patterson could be gold watching him for Scotland often. If he starts the season well everyone will want him. Sanchez and Ward rotate so well as well.

Anyone else think Team B or to thinly spread in defence? Double Arsenal defence could be interesting!

Is having to pick 4 most week sout of Salah, Son, Neto, Bailey and Andreas madness or sustainable?

Why 4 out of those 5?

          Oh. Well.

Thought you were joking actually 😉

          It's not 4 out of 5 😀 😀 😀

It's 2 out of 3 (Neto, Bailey, Andreas)

The one you don't pick end up next to Neco/Patterson and Greenwood/Archer/Plange

And to answer your question it seems sustainable this year. What most are doing.
