The usual Scout Squad foursome of Sam, Neale, Tom and Az are back for 2022/23.

Each week, they’ll be discussing the best Fantasy Premier League (FPL) goalkeepers, defenders, midfielders and forwards for the upcoming Gameweek.

No fewer than seven players have been given universal backing for the opening weekend, to make Friday’s final Scout Picks selection all the more tricky.

In this series, our four resident Fantasy Football Scout contributors each propose an 18-man squad of Fantasy players with the focus solely on the upcoming Gameweek.

Their selections serve as a long list for the Scout Picks, as the players nominated will then be narrowed down to a squad of 15 (with the starting XI not exceeding a total cost of £83.0m) for our final weekly selection ahead of Friday’s deadline.

Each writer must meet the following requirements:

  • At least one sub-£5.0m goalkeeper
  • At least one sub-£5.0m defender
  • At least one sub-£6.0m midfielder
  • At least one sub-£7.0m forward
  • No more than three players from the same club

      B is the safer play, which I'm usually a fan of to start the season - would take Mount over Diaz though.

      If you go A - I'd do Kane + KdB instead of Son + Haaland.

          I've been tempted by the threemium also, but think it leaves little room to maneuver the rest of your squad and will also give captaincy headaches. Salah is non-negotiable and want Spurs coverage for GW1. Haaland's risk of being rotated in some of the easier fixtures puts me off, although that shouldn't be a problem until UCL starts. I think KdB is in for a massive FPL year if he stays healthy - he's the one I'm scared of not owning.

            Yes, I agree regarding the manoeuvrability so gonna go with with team B as suggested. Just really wanted to squeeze Son into my team somehow!

    Who is your captain for GW1?

    Was originally going to (K)ane GW1, ship him to Haaland for GW2 and give (S)alah the armband.

    Thinking I'm just going to give it to Salah for both weeks and will reassess transfers next week

        Exactly, no brainer really. And if you're not going to captain Kane GW1 it seems pointless to book the Haaland transfer for GW2. Then again, City v BOU & Tot v che also makes the transfer seem a no brainer

        We don't know for sure how we will linup when Tomi is back. Expectation is that it will be Saliba and White battling out for that rcb spot but White could continue at RB if its working

        You can’t have it all can you? Most people picking Haaland and Salah as premiums spread the cash around, mostly to wingbacks

        Most people with 2 premiums will have 1 mid and 1 fwd. Some Egyptian fella seems to take up that mid slot in most teams. Am tempted to have both premiums as mids as I prefer Son/KdB to Kane/Haaland, but the structure of the squad isn't as good

        First draft I have seen with the 3 big hitters in midfield. Looks strong.
        Personally I would have Martinelli over Bruno, or even downgrade Bruno to Neto and upgrade Saliba

          Thanks! Yeah although I am tempted to Haaland over KDB and use that 0.5m to upgrade Saliba to Gabriel.
          I always like to punt on a player and Toon finally have an uninjured squad and Bruno looked bonkers towards to the end of last season.

            Keep an eye on the Shelvey injury. If he is out Bruno likely to play defensive mid until he returns

        Looks good to me. All 3 big hitters in your midfield and they should outscore the top forwards and top defenders.

          I have just swapped KDB to Haaland now. I feel like Haaland with Mahrez/Grealish/Foden supply is going to benefit more than KDB and gives me back 0.5m. But Have kept Son/Salah

      Who do you rate as the best 4.5 GK for the first 8 GW?

      Not sure if to go with Raya or Sanchez, or even downgrade to Iverson and keep the 0.5 itb. Problem with that option is Leicester’s defense was so poor last year…

        In 2021/22, Raya had 8 clean sheets in 24 games (1 in 3) and Sanchez had 11 clean sheets in 37 games (1 in 3.4). In terms of saves made - which will also be important for points - Raya made 78 saves (3.25 per game) and Sanchez made 101 saves (2.73 per game). Based on that, and their first 8 games, I'd sway towards Raya.

      Changed my squad many times this week, but I think I'll finally be content with:

      5-3-2:
      GK: Ramsdale (Ward)
      DEF: James, Cancelo, TAA, Robertson, Dias
      MID: Salah, Neto, Martinelli (Andreas, Lavia)
      FWD: Jesus, Kane (Archer)

      Transfer-wise, I'll be swapping Kane for Haaland before GW2, after that I think the first XI looks ok up to GW6, based on projections.
