Captain Sensible

Who is the best FPL captain for Gameweek 1?

Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers are mainly looking to Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur for the Gameweek 1 captaincy, and for the first time this season, the Captain Sensible article is here to highlight which assets have the best chance of hauling.

First, we will assess the fallout of the captain poll, before then analysing the best options, Rate My Team (RMT) and the Premier Fantasy Tools ratings ahead of Friday’s 18:30 BST deadline.

THE CAPTAIN POLL

Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) is the clear winner of the captain poll, with just over 60% of total votes from users in the inaugural vote of the season.

No other player has garnered more than 12% of votes at this stage, with Harry Kane (£11.5m) currently in second place.

Gabriel Jesus (£8.0m) occupies third place with just under 10% of votes, followed by Son Heung-min (£12.0m) and Erling Haaland (£11.5m), with 4.74% and 4.53% respectively.

THE CANDIDATES

MOHAMED SALAH

Who are the best FPL captain options for Double Gameweek 36?

Mohamed Salah underlined his captaincy credentials by scoring 23 goals and providing 14 assists last season cementing his status as the highest point scorer (265) in Fantasy Premier League.

The Egyptian started in an empathetic fashion, and temporarily ended the captaincy conversation, by registering six double-digit hauls in his first nine matches.

Early-season verve was replaced by late-season lethargy as the performances of Salah slumped below his gold standard levels.

Following Double Gameweek 26, Salah blanked in six of his 11 Premier League matches, registering a solitary double-digit haul.

Despite the peaks and troughs, Mohamed Salah produced division-leading underlying numbers, ranking first for non-penalty expected goal involvement (26.40) last season.

Salah produced his vintage best against defensive-juggernaut Manchester City in the Community Shield, providing an assist before expertly dispatching from the spot.

A visit to newly-promoted Fulham provides the perfect opportunity for Salah to continue an opening day goal-scoring record which dates back to 2017.

Fulham boasted the third-best defensive record in the Championship last season, registering a respectable 17 clean sheets, and allowed the least open-play expected goals conceded (xGC).

But in terms of playstyle, the Cottagers ranked best in the division for build-up attacks and produced the second-most goals scored from high turnovers.

Should Fulham stay true to their football philosophy and try to outplay Liverpool then expect goals, and a Mohamed Salah haul.

I like the group think on here.

I mean, anyone not reading fpl online forums wont even consider Leon Bailey will they?

Its like we spend a few days of reading drafts and suddenly, yes, hes the best option. Must have him. Now hes in 95% of teams on here if not 100%

I was going to say you've all copied my team i picked a week ago but thinking about it i think we"ve all influenced each other

The amount of information available to the more casual players increases year on year. I saw OfficialFPL tweet about him and his good preseason yesterday along with an article on him on their website. Sky have launched a new section on Sky Sports dedicated to FPL, and they have a section on their website too now which has certain players from the FPL Twitter community posting information and opinions there and again Bailey came up there when I had a glance at that today. It's certainly too much information now but it's all out there and much easier to find

I’m not sure Bailey is particularly an example of group think.

You’re right without scout I wouldn’t have considered him, but that’s because to be frank id forgotten he was even still at the club!

Because of scout I know he’s as much as nailed in a forward position for GW1 against the team largely expected to finish bottom of the table, has been scoring goals and is cheap enough that I can justify benching him instead of transferring out if needed when fixtures turn.

Group think would imply it’s based on subjective opinion of which we all convince ourselves of in a bubble but I think there’s objective facts pointing in his direction.

Group think is definitely a thing in fpl for sure, but I don’t think the emergence of a template is necessarily proof of that.

What’s the risk with Bailey? As in I get the risk but how many points do you need from a 5m midfielder to justify him - not many. In that sense there’s only so much he can underperform

It is hard to fit Kane/Haaland in without having to rely heavily on Neto/Martinelli/Bailey/Andreas or even some combination thereof. Anyone considering skipping Kane/Haaland and going with 8.0 midfielders instead? Something like this? Why are more teams not like this? Is there not enough ppm in it? Too much of a risk?

Thing is, what do you do if you want Haaland or Kane? It'll take minimum 3 moves to make it happen if you want to hold onto Jesus, and means you're tearing up your team. I initially felt having an 8m spot was important, but then the idea went off me. Far easier to downgrade than upgrade and the main justification I've seen for people picking 8m players hasn't been "I think X will do really well", instead it's been "if X flops I can move him to another 8m option", like they're planning for failure and to force themselves to use FTs.

I seen you make this point elsewhere. I agree on your point of easier to downgrade - 100%.

On the planning for failure point. I think it’s more failure to some degree or another is inevitable. If you come out of GW1 thinking you nailed your 15 that would be a miracle. Therefore, having player price points that give you maximum flexibility to fix the almost inevitable failure is valuable.

All that said, there is certainly individual arguments for many of the 8ms, particularly Saka, Diaz and Mount in my mind

Yes but I have just realised he is already triple Arsenal. I just don’t particularly like Rashford as an option really. He plays some tough defences early and so I think you can’t let the United stuff play out a bit before jumping.

I’d be tempted to switch to martinelli and switch Saka to Diaz.

Increasingly squads don’t have a 4.5m spot. I agree he is one of the better ones but unlikely to keep up with the better 5m options and more expensive than the 4m if used to take up a bench spot.

If your structure needs a 4.5m def he is a very fair shout

I’d say no, by the time you want Bailey out Walker might get rotated. I think someone like Dunk or Jansson might be better where you can bench them for their first couple of tough games then get them in which Bailey switches. Also gives +0.5 ITB

    Genuine question to Perisic owners:

He scored 4 goals and 5 assists at Serie A during his last Inter Milan season (20/21) under Conte. But, do you know that he completed 60 mins in only 17 games out of his 32 appearances? That is, less than half of the total 38 games. What makes you pick him over someone nailed like Trippier or Cash?

I have had him in since my first draft and just switched to James. Think he will be great...and then I will get him in! just need 11 firm starters this week.

Picking Cash over Perisic. Where is the fun in that.

I think this is known - and why I don’t have him. But you could flip that statement on its head.

He got 9 attacking returns despite playing less than 60 mins in half his games, imagine what he would do if he played more!

Think that’s the counterargument for owners.

My drafts pretty much come down to this decision, would really appreciate some thoughts -

    532 - a) Ramsdale, Perisic, James, Neto
    442 - b) Ward, James, Mount, Neco (4m rotating gk's)
    442 - c) Mendy, Gabriel, Mount, Neco

Neco will sit on the bench, neto will rotate for the last spot

Too risky to go without Kane/Haaland or bench?

    Mendy
    TAA Robbo Cancelo James Trippier
    Salah Foden Saka Mount
    Jesus

    Ward Andreas Taylor Greenwood

I’d say yes - because you are pretty much permanently locking yourself out of those two.

Given Trent, Salah and Jesus feel hard to justify selling. To get to Kane or Haaland without selling the above 3 would taking you 4 moves ie a wildcard realistically.

That feels risky. Similar KDB or Son would take 3 transfers.
