Captain Sensible

Who is the best FPL captain for Gameweek 1?

Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers are mainly looking to Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur for the Gameweek 1 captaincy, and for the first time this season, the Captain Sensible article is here to highlight which assets have the best chance of hauling.

First, we will assess the fallout of the captain poll, before then analysing the best options, Rate My Team (RMT) and the Premier Fantasy Tools ratings ahead of Friday’s 18:30 BST deadline.

THE CAPTAIN POLL

Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) is the clear winner of the captain poll, with just over 60% of total votes from users in the inaugural vote of the season.

No other player has garnered more than 12% of votes at this stage, with Harry Kane (£11.5m) currently in second place.

Gabriel Jesus (£8.0m) occupies third place with just under 10% of votes, followed by Son Heung-min (£12.0m) and Erling Haaland (£11.5m), with 4.74% and 4.53% respectively.

THE CANDIDATES

MOHAMED SALAH

Who are the best FPL captain options for Double Gameweek 36?

Mohamed Salah underlined his captaincy credentials by scoring 23 goals and providing 14 assists last season cementing his status as the highest point scorer (265) in Fantasy Premier League.

The Egyptian started in an empathetic fashion, and temporarily ended the captaincy conversation, by registering six double-digit hauls in his first nine matches.

Early-season verve was replaced by late-season lethargy as the performances of Salah slumped below his gold standard levels.

Following Double Gameweek 26, Salah blanked in six of his 11 Premier League matches, registering a solitary double-digit haul.

Despite the peaks and troughs, Mohamed Salah produced division-leading underlying numbers, ranking first for non-penalty expected goal involvement (26.40) last season.

Salah produced his vintage best against defensive-juggernaut Manchester City in the Community Shield, providing an assist before expertly dispatching from the spot.

A visit to newly-promoted Fulham provides the perfect opportunity for Salah to continue an opening day goal-scoring record which dates back to 2017.

Fulham boasted the third-best defensive record in the Championship last season, registering a respectable 17 clean sheets, and allowed the least open-play expected goals conceded (xGC).

But in terms of playstyle, the Cottagers ranked best in the division for build-up attacks and produced the second-most goals scored from high turnovers.

Should Fulham stay true to their football philosophy and try to outplay Liverpool then expect goals, and a Mohamed Salah haul.

Help me sort this out (23.5M dilemma):
A - Gabriel, Salah and Edouard
B - Dias, Mount and Vardy

A, even if they’re all starters. Salah has a much higher ceiling than Vardy or Mount.

A without a shadow of doubt

I would prefer to spend that money on Jonny, Salah and Mbeumo given fixtures (if all three have to start). If one can be benched I prefer Dias, Salah and 4.5 FW.

That's a lot of players at the 5.0 bracket – I'd be wary of that

Digne might have some set pieces so I'd say him. Both should be nailed and Cash scoring last year was probably unsustainable

Persobally, might as well get Dias/James at that point and then have flexibility for double Liverpool attack (Diaz or Nunez).

Not terrible at all but feel there's possibly better combos out there.

      SG won't play.

Kane–Son double-up is a risk IMO. People are forgetting that Spurs' pre-season results were:
W, 6-3 vs. K-League All Stars (not a real team)
      D, 1-1 vs. Sevilla
      W, 2-1 vs. Rangers
      L, 0-1 vs. Roma

Two-thirds of the Spurs goals were against K-League All Stars; they didn't even get a goal a game after that. I can't see them getting enough goals against Chelsea and Wolves to justify £23.5 on their strikers.

Good evening, how does this look?

    Pope
TAA Robertson Walker Perisic N Williams
    Salah (c) Son Andreas
    Jesus Kane

    Ward Colback (4.5) Reid (4.5) Stansfield (4.5)

    1. nerd_is_the_werd

      1 year, 8 months ago

I will probably do Son + Kane ---> KDB + Haaland for GW2 which is an advantage to this setup.

bench is a bit thin, should I cut down on the starting XI to free up some funds:

      a) Jesus ---> Toney, then maybe 4.5 ---> Neto.
      b) Son ---> Luis Diaz, Robbo ---> Cancelo, then upgrade Stansfied ---> Toney.

      Any ideas would be great.

Agree, which is why I may have to reluctantly depart with either Son / Kane to free up funds.

At least upgrade Andreas to Bailey.

      4.5 defender can outscore Walker.

      Your team is disjointed.

        • 4 Years

Is Bailey nailed? Ahead of Coutinho and Buendia.

Walker at 5.0 doesn't seem to be too expensive.
He's nailed with Zinch gone and can easily bank clean sheet with City defence.

    5. KieranKA

      Pasting from above.

Kane–Son double-up is a risk IMO. People are forgetting that Spurs' pre-season results were:

I'm kind of relying on their performances in the PL from previous seasons.

They are likely to be shipped for KDB, Haaland for GW2 (in one go) for exact cash.

23.5 is a lot though, so might ship one of them out.

It’s a tricky one. I think Son outscores Kane, but getting rid of Son gives you more flexibility - e.g. Son & Colback to two 8s.

      1. nerd_is_the_werd
        • 4 Years
        1 year, 8 months ago

Yup, I think it's easier to have both cuz they partner well and when one scores, the other assists.

Penalties and FK, corner assists also covered too.

Taking one out just feels bit weird, cuz I'd rather they both haul (and miss) in one go.

At the moment trippier, swapped off Digne who I like but don't know whether I trust having a villa double up as I have Bailey in midfield

Yeah I’m on Digne at the minute but have been on Trippier too, Villa with Bournemouth who have no defenders haha and Everton without DCL I’m just wondering if that better than Trippier with Forest and then Brighton

He’s in my thoughts mate!! One option would be to go for the Leicester keeper and get Trippier and Walker and bench Walker for West Ham as I’ve got Cancelo and then play Walker next week

Is he going to be one of the top 3 City assets over 4/5 gameweeks though? I've got 2 City and gonna wait and see who the third is and get on in 1 move. I'm hoping it's a mid, but if not I'd be happy to bring walker in as he's certainly solid and looked good in community shield.

Not sure mate, should get plenty of game time, if I went for him with Trippier too it would leave me solid options for if/when Bailey loses his place rather than having to rely or Neco or Andreas

Without knowing if Walker is going to play every game, I'd plump for Trippier out of the 2 despite some of the early fixtures not being great.

Would you lose James or Cancelo for Trippier?

      Would prefer James to Trippier.

Hey friends, am I crazy going this light up top and double up Arsenal up top?

    Ramsdale Ward
    Robbo Cancelo James Doherty Dalot
    Salah Son Sancho Martinelli Andreas
    Jesus BrennanJohnson 4.5

A little worried with no City cover but I'm not keen on anyone other than Haaland or KDB which are both hard to get without sacrificing much.

I had 6m and 5m mids before instead of Sancho and Marti to allow for better forwards but still tinkering.

    Appreciate any thoughts.

Not crazy. This is a good team.

Trent is worth the extra .5 over Robertson though – maybe downgrade Dalot to Williams, or Sancho to Coutinho

Solid team. The big choice is between Son & Kane, but you probably know that already!

    Ramsdale Ward

    TAA Robo James Cancelo Neco

    Salah Martnielli Rashford Bailey Andreas

Kane Jesus Archer (0.5 in the bank)

    Or

    Ramsdale Ward

    TAA Robo James Walker* Neco

    Son* Martnielli Rashford Bailey Diaz

    Kane Jesus Archer

I could also go Archer ->wilson and Diaz -> pereira

    Thoughts on this?

    Pope
    Perisic James TAA Walker
    Son Salah Bowen Bailey Martinelli
    Jesus

    Ward Jonny Greenwood Edouard.

Good move Son and Bowen out to upgrade Eduoard to Kane or Haaland and Walker to Robbo/Cancelo?

Feel he's a bit under the radar at the moment and outside of GW1 they've got ok fixtures.

My team for the first couple of weeks, just getting my thoughts written out but please feel free to comment on or discuss my thinking...

    Ward
    Cancelo TAA james
    Salah martinelli, mount, kulu, diaz
    Jesus, havertz

    Bench: iversen, neco, vestergard,delap.

I chose the Chelsea trio because almost all of Chelsea goal contribution will come from them bar sterling who might provide or be provided an assist from them.

Jesus/Martinelli combo provides similar output to Jesu/saka and is cheaper.

Triple on Liverpool assets due to fixtures and goal contribution.

Ward/iversen for obvious reasons and the rest as fodder.

    Thoughts?

I chose kulu so i can get in on the action if spurs haul as well.
Might bring in harland for kulu and harvertz if he shows good stats.
