It was a second successive finish inside the top seven for West Ham United, this time with a wonderful European journey included. They defeated the likes of Sevilla and Lyon on the way to the Europa League semi-final, before being eliminated by eventual winners Eintracht Frankfurt.

If it wasn’t for a late blip in domestic action – winning one of their final seven outings – the Hammers would get another shot at it, instead of the Europa Conference League.

Their FPL season was entertaining too. The early form of Michail Antonio (£7.5m) and Said Benrahma (£6.0m) saw both their prices shoot up by at least £0.5m during the opening weeks.

Forward Antonio began with three double-digit hauls thanks to four goals and four assists, whilst midfielder Benrahma bagged one of each in both of the first two.

Once things quietened down for the duo, in stepped Jarrod Bowen (£8.5m). His trickle of early attacking returns went up several gears after Gameweek 19. Suddenly, five goals and six assists arrived in just eight appearances, averaging nine points per match.

With such a low price of £6.5m, Bowen’s ownership escalated and he ended the season as one of only five players to exceed 200 FPL points.

David Moyes mostly used a four-man defence, although wing-back systems were occasionally tried.

Strangely, the Hammers ranked as one of the league’s worst for allowing shots, yet one of the best for conceding big chances. It was one of the reasons why Lukasz Fabianski (£5.0m) finished as high as he did for FPL points (fifth among goalkeepers), with easy save points arriving from those low-percentage shots.

Their defenders were of little FPL interest due to a lack of clean sheets – only four sides collecting fewer. Yet they did provide 21 attacking returns, with six from Aaron Cresswell (£5.0m) and five from Craig Dawson (£5.0m).

What didn’t help was that they were the only two West Ham defenders to start over 25 league games. Heading into 2022/23, the £30m summer signing Nayef Aguerd (£5.0m) comes highly rated but has already had to undergo ankle surgery

OPENING FIXTURES

Once the opening day clash with Manchester City passes, our Season Ticker says that West Ham have the second-best fixture run between Gameweeks 2 and 11. And even the equivalent May hosting of City ended in a 2-2 draw.

Although they coped well with last season’s congested schedule, it’s worth mentioning that qualifying for the Europa Conference League group stage would bring another long period of midweek matches.

From Gameweek 2 until players are released for the World Cup in November, each midweek would have either a league, Europa Conference League or EFL Cup match. There is also an international break.

Iversen ahead of Ward (assuming Ward is fit to start and is first choice) It saves you in case of a sending off.

            Think I figured it out.

If the starting keeper is sent off before 60 mins then the substitute keeper will come on and most likely score slightly better than the departing keeper. Fair point.

Yeah. And if the starting keeper has conceded at all for the duration of the 90 minutes then it will be minus points

Its about the potential red card negative points and potential penalty save from the sub.

They don't, that's why you start the goalie that will be on the bench.

A sub will not come on for a red card per se, but if you start the backup keeper then the first keeper will normally auto sub on unless the backup keeper was called into play, most likely due to a red card or potentially an injury.

I would guess the chances of a professional foul are higher than the chances of a goalie getting injured after the 30th minute.

Is it crazy not going for either Kane or Haaland ? went for Salah and Son instead . Here is the team :

    Sachez
    Trent | Robbo | James | Walker
    (S)alah | Son | Saka | Podence
    Jesus | Johnson |

    Ward | Neco | Andreas | Archer

    0.5 ITM.

slightly different from the template team with some differential :

Podence : OOP potentially , and with low ownership, it is unlikely to drop in price in first few game weeks.

Johnson : as a Penalty, Corner kick and Free Kick player, and with Lingard coming this season, 6.0m is a no brainer for me.

Any though on this ? Thanks

I've just changed to Son & Wilson from Mahrez and Kane. I don't have another 8m mid alongside them though (Martinelli instead). Having both last season's top points scorers can't be a bad thing, can it? Gw2 captain may be tricky.

Thanks ! My plan for GW2 is maybe Son to KDB , or Saka to Foden/Mahrez . It is still early to say though as I don't really like to plan transfer in advance ...

this is still not my final draft though, still feel worried without either Kane or Haaland ...

I know the advice is premium defence, and I would love to have TAA, Cancelo etc. but Kane is on form pre-season, Jesus will play a big role for Arsenal, and I want Haaland before his price goes up. I'm hoping my budget defence still gets a few goal/assist returns!

If you keep TAA and Robbo it will have to be Kane and Diaz to only have 3 Liverpool.
Kane and Diaz to Salah and 6.5 striker, possibly Mitrovic?
Or downgrade Ederson to free up more cash for the striker

Kane & Diaz to Salah & Mitro ?
I think Kane & Diaz will get more points than Salah & Mitro … which is the issue when I look at the £5 mill extra for Salah over Diaz (or even over Robbo & TAA)

Ederson will outscore any forward up to £8 mill except Jesus (I have Jesus already) so can’t see down grading Ederson to upgrade Mitro helps at all

Would much rather have Robbo over Diaz & use the 1m elsewhere

Surely Diaz has significantly higher attacking threat?

He does. Diaz vs. Robertson is the most difficult decision to make this season. People making it sound like it's simple one way or the other seem wrong to me.

What defines a 'premium' player, 10+ mil price?

Top price bracket in respective position

For Mids and Fwds, some say 9m+, others 10m+. Or you could say top captaincy choices.
Then there are premium keepers - 5.5 and defenders 6m+.
