The rebels, the thrillseekers and the individuals. In our latest community article, FPL_Runpharm asks why some Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers go against the ‘safe’ captain pick.

Every season, there comes a point where the captaincy feelsโ€ฆ predictable. Last season, it was Mohamed Salah (ยฃ14.2m). This season, Erling Haaland (ยฃ14.8m). Once the majority decides one of them is in great scoring form, the team is playing well, and ownership is through the roofโ€ฆ thatโ€™s it. People just stick with the โ€œboringโ€ captain every Gameweek. As long as heโ€™s fit (or even half fit), not suspended, not at any rotation risk, or away for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), he gets the armband. No questions asked.

And honestly, we all understand why – which is why we do it, too! Yes, Iโ€™m talking about you… and me. Itโ€™s safe. Itโ€™s logical. It protects you from the dreaded ‘effective ownership’ (EO). But today, weโ€™re not going to talk about us boring bunch, because, well, thatโ€™s just way too boring. You won’t want to read about it anyway.

So, letโ€™s look at the other side: the ones who dare to go against the grain. Why do some people choose to ignore the obvious, instead going for the โ€œfunโ€ or โ€œriskyโ€ pick? Whatโ€™s really going on in their heads?

‘PLAYING TO WIN’

FPL 2024/25 champion on 13 safe captain

The usual answer you hear is: โ€œIf we keep captaining Haaland, weโ€™re not going to gain much rank.โ€ These managers claim theyโ€™re playing to win. They find more excitement in chasing glory than avoiding average. โ€œIf Iโ€™m going to finish 500k captaining Haaland every week, I might as well go for it. It doesnโ€™t matter if I end up ranked 5m in the end.โ€

Thatโ€™s usually the mindset for the ones chasing a goal (top 10k, top 100k, whatever it may be). But hereโ€™s the thing: those managers usually play it safe early in the season, only opting for differential captains when they are chasing towards the end of the campaign.

So, who are the ones not captaining Haaland now?

1. The Thrill Seekers

FPL notes: Welbeck again + why Calvert-Lewin was subbed off 2

Youโ€™ve seen them in real life, too. The people who climb skyscrapers without ropes, walk tightropes between buildings, and jump off cliffs for fun. They live for the adrenaline, the โ€œWhat if?โ€ moments.

In FPL, that same rush appears when everyone else captains Haaland. A tiny voice in their head, whispering, โ€œWhat if I go for Bukayo Saka (ยฃ10.1m)? Or Danny Welbeck (ยฃ6.5m)? Or Jean-Philippe Mateta (ยฃ7.9m)? Or even Gabriel Magalhaes (ยฃ6.6m)? Defenders are killing it so far and Arsenal just won’t concede.โ€

At that point, itโ€™s not just about points anymore. Itโ€™s about the rush of being right when no one else is. โ€œRisk takers tend to make decisions with both high potential benefits and high potential adverse outcomesโ€ (Frontiers in Psychology, 2021). Of course, they rarely think about the adverse part. Itโ€™s the dopamine hit theyโ€™re chasing.

2. The Individuals

World Cup of FPL - Group E and F results safe captain

Then, there are those who simply donโ€™t like being the same as everyone else. Remember back in school, there were always a few students who just had to stand out? The class clowns, the goths, the bullies? That instinct doesnโ€™t disappear when we grow up; it just takes new forms. In psychology, this is called the need for distinctiveness.

โ€œDeviance can be a way for people to express themselves and their individuality.โ€ – Simply Psychology

So, when 85% of managers put it on Haaland, these ones go, โ€œNah. I see something others donโ€™t.โ€ Itโ€™s not always arrogance; sometimes itโ€™s a way to express confidence. They believe their football eye test, analysis, or gut instinct gives them an edge that others are too afraid to follow.

3. The Rebels

Finally, the rebels. Ever notice how when everyone tells you to do something, you suddenly donโ€™t want to do it anymore? Yeah, me too. When I was younger, my mum used to tell me to study hard every single day. And for a while, I did – obediently. Until one day, something snapped. I thought, โ€œWhy am I listening to her every time? I want to do what I like.โ€ So, instead of studying, I started watching FPL videos, dreaming of becoming a YouTuber talking about captaincy picks instead of chemistry formulas (not a true story).

Thatโ€™s psychological reactance, the human tendency to push back when our freedom to choose feels limited. So when every content creator, Twitter posts, and podcasts say, โ€œHaaland is a must-captain this week,โ€ some managers instinctively respond, โ€œNah. Iโ€™ll make my own decision.โ€ Itโ€™s not always logical, but it feels good. Going against the crowd restores their sense of control. It strokes their ego. Itโ€™s a quiet rebellion disguised as โ€œgut instinct.”

Some chase the thrill.
Some crave individuality.
Some rebel against being told what to do.
And sometimesโ€ฆ they just genuinely think thereโ€™s a better option that Gameweek.
So next time you see someone captaining a โ€œcrazyโ€ pick while you play it safe, it’s not recklessness. Theyโ€™re not losing their minds; they are just playing FPL differently to you and me.

In the meantime pick a few differentials in your remaining starters. It's one thing most of us captain Haaland but nothing stopping us deviating from Raya, Gabriel, Salah, Saka etc and hopefully a bit of gold. Forest defenders could be golden under Dyche.

Was considering this, was just gonna see how he looked tonight because he has a few decent fixtures. Anything else? Am I right to hold off the WC a little longer? No double Ars Def seems the obvious issue

I don't mind it if you have Rice because Saka will come good eventually but Gabriel consistently outdoing Timber - it isn't really a sideways move. it seems to be an advantage not to have 3 arsenal because nobody's 3 arsenal had rice so those managers have to completely readjust

So you think Rice in for Grealish makes up for the lack of double def?
Couldn't afford the Timber upgrade but still would have 1 FT to burn and 0.3 ITB if did this move

Thing is I had a slow start, Wildcarded into a pretty template team and got impatient at how small the green arrows were. (3.4m to 3m to 2.7m). So is this reckless or calculated?

I can see the argument in that case. There is nothing worse than that, sounds pretty much like my previous 2 seasons. I definitely wouldn't say reckless

No FPL points for xG. I prefer form, as boring as it sounds. I'll fund other ways of having a poor rank! Keep Mateta but VC him unless Haaland's form drops.

Mateta rarely scores back to back. Brighton may not have kept much clean sheet but Dunk can martial Mateta, don't you think?
Not sure Liverpool have turned the corner yet to think Haaland would blank against them. Lets see how they fare at Real Madrid. One on one against konate, Haaland could have another 2 goals+.

Fortune favours to brave so why not risk it for a biscuit.

                this game really rewards patience.

eg saka has blanked in a few games, he’s not going to keep blanking

you can question whether he’s worth 10m but you risk missing a haul if you sell now

True however, for what infrequent haul he may get, Rice covers and exceeds that with weekly defcon, assists and occassional goal. Compare their points over the last 5 weeks let alone since the season started. Arsenal mainly rely on set piece so are not going to rack up penalties that favours saka.
Issue is outside of inconsistent bruno, there is no other midfielder at that 10 bracket worth having. Palmer would be due to chelsea's fixtures but he is injured.
If Isak was on form, you would spent it on Isak but he is not and salah resurgence has yet to be confirmed [lets see how he does at Real Madrid and Man city].
Still think the play is saka out and Rice in with Gab and Timber.

There should be a cap on how many GW's can you captain someone? For example - you can captain Haaland only for 10 GW's

That will get people to think about their captaincy rather than just making him perma captain

It's all up to you though. I've had Haaland from GW1 too, but I've also captained Gyokeres (GW2) and Salah (couple of GWs).

It's steady boring points greanted. Less fun when I give away points with silly transfers. There's a James Caan movie from the 70s called the Gambler. He says a real gambler doesn't like the sure thing, they live for the rush of the differential long odds doing good. It's true though, you're a gambler or you're an investor. A great movie even besides the gambling.

From FPL perspective, people tend to do investing rather than gambling as they just want to finish top 10k, 50k, 100k and hence they play it safe.... that's the reason most people bought in J.Pedro from GW1...more out of fear of losing rank rather than expecting to get points.... that's what most CC's also do.... that's why everyone would captain Haaland unless someone else has a double GW

I finished about 21K one year. My best rank and least enjoyable season by far. Was in a ML with a lad who would finish regular enough inside top 5K and hated tracking his team. GW36 I captained Benteke , he rightly went Aguero, my usual pick. Not in any leagues now, don't post my team here and try avoiding here, 2.95m rank but am enjoying it.

Playing for a point won't be enough for Liverpool. Presuming Arsenal win, that would put them 9 points behind Arsenal. They have to come out and play = not a good idea v City. Bournemouth tried playing...

When Van Dijk looked good before injury, Alisson behind him, Fabinho in front of him. Gravenberch improves their defence but doesn't make it solid.

If Alison is not back in goal and liverpool have lost to Real Madrid then hell no. They would be prime for the taking as I have yet to see Slot play defensively where he parks the bus.

CAN SOMEONE ASK PEP WHAT HE HAS AGAINST ROUTE 1 FOOTBALL. Like Ederson used to do with success, he needs to get Donnarum to go route 1 with the long punt for Haaland to brush off konate and bang. Why Man city don't do that more often is beyond me. That would be a sure fire way to get goals like arsenal's set pieces.

Might go Minteh in midfield instead of Sarr and Rice who have European fixtures this week and the last week of November. He has Palace away Sunday, then Brentford home, Forest away, Villa home, West Ham home

Might be the time to upgrade 5th mid? Dewsbury-Hall has 24 points while Caicedo has 58 for 1.1m more.

Already have Caicedo (was thinking KDH > Rice the folliwing week & BB)

Rice is nice. Went up last night, tho

Who is the best fodder for the 3rd striker spot? Still have BB to play FWIW

Nice article - I play to win every season, it'd be nice to have got more Haaland points but hindsight is 20/20
