On the same day that Manchester United announced the signing of Bayern Munich midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger, Southampton’s Morgan Schneiderlin was also confirmed as a Red Devil. After completing a deal for the combative Frenchman, Louis van Gaal explained the reasons behind his latest acquisition:

“Morgan is a player from the Premier League so he can cope with the Premier League. Our selection was not in balance and I have already mentioned that I want to make the balance with midfielders, so you could expect that I shall buy two holding midfielders. And Morgan Schneiderlin is the type that I think can play in our system and in our philosophy. Manchester United only buy players who can make a contribution for that. We are not buying just for buying.”

The History

Schneiderlin worked his way up the youth ranks at RC Strasbourg, penning his first professional contract in 2005. The French international managed just five appearances with the Alsace club, before being sold to Southampton in the summer of 2008 following Strasbourg’s relegation to the second tier of French football.

The combative midfielder found himself in and out of the line-up during his debut campaign with the Saints, producing zero attacking returns across 23 starts. In the wake of Southampton’s relegation to League One, he cemented a regular berth in the 2009/10 season, serving up one goal and two assists in 37 appearances.

Following the south coast outfit’s promotion back to the Championship for the 2011/12 campaign, Schneiderlin featured in all but four of their league ties, tallying two goals and three assist in 29 starts. A second-place finish gained the Saints entry into the top flight, where the he continued to flourish; having notched five goals and one assist in 36 outings, Schneiderlin was honoured as the Player’s Player and Fans Player of the Year.

In his previous two campaigns at St Mary’s Stadium, he chalked up six goals and three assists over 59 appearances, with ligament injury and a torn abductor muscle restricting him to 24 starts in the 2014/15 season.

Schneiderlin made his debut for France’s senior squad on June 8, 2014 in an 8-0 friendly win against Jamaica. Less than three weeks later, Les Bleus boss Didier Deschamps started him in a World Cup group clash against Ecuador. In all, Schneiderlin has earned nine caps on the international stage but is yet to score.

The Prospects

Schneiderlin’s arrival at Old Trafford – allied with the recruitment of Bastian Schweinsteiger – has furnished Van Gaal with a wealth of excellent midfield options. Factor in the impressive late-season form of Michael Carrick and Ander Herrera, and there is a myriad of viable set-ups that could exploit the Red Devils’ new-found strength.

With Van Gaal likely to operate with a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3, Schneiderlin can be expected to sit in front of the back-four as Van Gaal attempts to bring a better balance to a side that managed just 11 clean sheets in the previous campaign – just one more than relegated pair Hull and Burnley.

In terms of his individual Fantasy worth, Schneiderlin hardly set the world alight with four goals and one assist in 2,186 minutes for Saints last term, yet his 5.5 price tag in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game could entice some investors who are reluctant to invest heavily in United’s premium options.

Surprisingly, Schneiderlin fashioned shots (one per 76.7 minutes) at a similar rate to Mata (73.2 minutes) last year and has wasted no time in settling into his new surrounds, having scored on his United debut last week. In terms of creativity, it’s clear he is no deep-lying playmaker in the mould of Cesc Fabregas – the Frenchman provided just 20 key passes in 26 appearances in 2014/15, though his minutes per key pass (115) was still far quicker than Carrick’s 191.1, for example.

One look at the stats highlights what the new boy will mainly bring to Old Trafford. In his three seasons in the Premier League, Schneiderlin’s ball-winning ability was fundamental to the Saints’ style of play. In 2012/13, where he missed just two matches, he was first amongst Premier League midfielders for attempted tackles (182), successful tackles (108) and interceptions (139), whilst he sat third for successful tackles in each of the last two campaigns (2013/14, with 87 and 2014/15, with 79) despite his pitch time being somewhat restricted due to injury.

It may well be, then, that his determined displays in the centre of the park will boost United’s defensive prospects more than anything else. Given that no Red Devils defender made 30 or more appearances last year, though, many Fantasy managers will be wary of investing in Van Gaal’s backline from the off unless the remaining pre-season line-ups suggest greater consistency of selection.

In terms of fixtures, the opening schedule could certainly be a lot kinder for Van Gaal’s troops, though. United play six of last year’s top eight in the first ten Gameweeks, suggesting that Schneiderlin’s defensive duties will be key in the first couple of months. The Frenchman may well struggle to earn our attention if, as expected, he’s mainly employed to break up opposition attacks and provide the platform for Mata, Depay and Wayne Rooney to wreak havoc further up the field.

The PL is in need of a 'Best player in the world'

    Hazard and Aguero are good...

But they aren't Ronaldo and Messi

As long as Messi has two functioning legs, no player will be close to being the best in the world for another 6-7 years.

2? One just keeps him balanced.

In seriousness though, i dont agree. Yes he is/has been the best, but age kicks in and at the world cup, we saw when not surrounded by the likes of iniesta and xavi,he was only able to score against group stage poor sides. While the spain side won loads without him between 08-12. He sits behind the true greats because of this. On route to 2 world cup finals, maradona scored when it mattered in knockout rounds and overcame sides like germany brazil italy england uruguay belgium. Messi done nothing after the greeces and irans went home.

"He sits behind the true greats because of this"...you make a good point that he's not done it in the world cup...but I'd like to bring his success in the champions league into the debate...here he's been successful and Maradona (the drug cheat) wasn't nearly as good...and I'd also say the champions league is a higher standard competition

of course the world cup brings true international fame in a way that the champions league never will...consider Pele and George Best for a good example

but I've seen them both play (on TV) many times and I think Messi is the better of the two by some distance

He carried Barcelona to a treble this season with a Xavi moving into retirement and an Iniesta nowhere near his best. Have never seen a player even close to having as much ability as that. He'd be the best in the world in about 7 positions if he played there.

I agree. Suarez, Bale, Ronaldo, Henry... all candidates. ofc none in the Messi era came close to 'Best in the World' but still in the mix. Not sure we have many (if any) in the Top 5 right now!

Its better for the lack of the best players. Suarez messed it up a couple of seasons ago - captain choice was too easy. The league needs the strikers to bang in a few more, their scoring was mediocre last season - otherwise its tempting to play 5 in mid.

Will be interesting to see the difference between the ffs template (huth, walcott, rooney and sakko) and the general template (clyne, sanchez, aguero and kane).

      Assume you'll rotate Rotchie/Deeney?

Like the team, but would rather downgrade Ritchie and upgrade Deeney, probably to Sakho.

      Otherwise very solid

Would you risk going with a 5m, 4th mid, if the rest of your team was perfectly set up ? Could maybe stretch it to a 5.5, I'm thinking Sinclair or Aarons, or possibly Redmond or Ki

If you are gonna need to play them every week i'd look at Ki/Shelvey, Kouyate or maybe even Grealish.

Aarons could yet to turn out to be a masterstroke as he has genuine goal/assist potential but big risk i'd imagine.

Not a fan of Spirs defense or a defender with little chance of playing. Would rather have two 4.5s
Don't think Gabby worthwhile at all. Would rather a different 5.5

Personally l would change Redmond for Wanyama and use the 1m saved to change Schmeichel for Panti. Panti has better fixtures and will score more bonus points. I would also change Gabby for Deeney and play 3-4-3. Also l would pick Jenkinson instead of Toby. I don't trust Spurs' defence and West Ham's fixtures after GW1 are very nice.

Question: With the way CBI is now even more important for bonus points, and with Skrtel getting 25 bonus points to Clyne's 15 bonus points last year (in even less playing time), why is Clyne's ownership so much higher than Skrtel's?

I'm an American, so I'm not as clued in as some of you Brits are. So this is not a rhetorical question.

I hear ya, but are they really that different? Skrtel had seven goals two years ago. Clyne had two goals and two assists last year - not exactly Ivanovic. I get it, but I don't 🙂

If a defender get's a goal or an assist then the bps won't matter because they'll take the BAPS anyway.

Right. That makes sense. I just found the huge disparity in ownership odd given their identical price. I know outside, marauading backs are sexy in FPL, but I'll take bonus points all day. Having Terry instead of Ivanovic for the last ten games last season darn near won me my league.

I've not seen too much chat or interest in Costa or Sterling so far? Sterling might be a punt at 9.0 but Costa? A bargain I'd say, especially as Mour likes playing one up front and he plays well will Hazard. Thoughts?

I am tempted to get Sterling instead of Sliva saves the 1m and MP sounds like he will play sterling a lot. Saves the 1m too. Costa will more then likely get injured again and is a yellow card magnet for these reasons I will steer clear.
Hazard? I think he is the main to get out of the Chelsea players.

Indeed. He seems one of the few top class mids who have their mojo back. I think he's going to be a point scoring handful for any and every team he plays against. Going to fit into City very well.

            Thinking about doing this:

            Schmeichel/Butland

            Creswell/Lescott/Richards/Bassong/Francis

            Walcott/Fab/Mata/Sterling/Chadli

            Costa/Pelle/Wilson

No Hazard, Kun, or Ivan, but it looks like a lot of points. Defenders seem to rotate well the first ten weeks.

It could be great I'm not a fan though. Don't like the Pelle pick to be honest any of those midfield down .5 to Manè covers your Southampton cover and you can get Benteke.
Cresswell as much as I like him is 5.5 and WHM have tough away fixtures. I would find .5 to make him Azpi/Kos. Then I think it looks great

He was offered Premier League football. No contest really between that and staying at Rovers, there are no hard feeling from our side or certainly not from me.

He is basically all pace with a bit of skill/trickery. Very very (very!) inconsistent though. Can be special on his day and in the right scenarios, as his pace is pretty stunning. Like the FA Cup game where Stoke just played a ridiculously high line all game and got caught time and time again. He got a hattrick

I mean you have 7 defenders on FPL.
RB is Cedric Soares (£5.0), LB is Bertrand (£5.5), CB is Fonte (£5.5)

So the other CB is Yoshida (£4.5) or Gardos (£4.5) .... because Targett (£4.0) and Martina (£4.5) are LB and RB backups.

            Hazard, Yaya, Ozil, Chadli, Anya
            Costa, JRod, Sakho

Seems like JRod needs to go (not nailed), but in what manner?

            A) Ivan + Hazard + Jrod ----> Azpi + Fabregas + Rooney
            B) JRod -----> Gomis

Yes, look at the amount of ST's Liverpool have. A few bad games for Benteke and he could lose his spot to another proven EPL striker (Ings) Balo is still at the club as well.

Ings isn't worth half as Benteke and Rodgers didn't even buy him to play him as a pure 9. Balotelli is not going to stay at Liverpool(Sampdoria wants him along with other clubs) and he's a really bad striker. Benteke is world class, he's a 46M euros player, they didn't buy him to place him on the bench. He'll probably play as a starter even when Sturridge will have recovered.

He will definitely be nailed until Sturridge returns at least after paying over 32.5m. I prefer JRod to Pelle if he nails a spot down. Why don't you like Manè. Everything suggests he could be great? Great form last season and he has great stats

            Breaking News (last hour):

Ronald Koeman targets centre-back for Southampton after Florin Gardos injury
            • Gardos faces ‘six or seven’ months out due to a knee injury
            • Koeman: ‘priority is to bring one or two centre-backs’
Ronald Koeman has only two senior, fit centre-backs at Southampton after Gardos's injury. Southampton defender Florin Gardos faces up to seven months on the sidelines with a knee injury, meaning Ronald Koeman is targeting to at least one new centre-back.

Signed from Steaua Bucharest last summer, the 26-year-old had looked set to get a chance to prove his worth at St Mary’s following Toby Alderweireld’s exit.

However, Romania international Gardos now faces “six or seven months” out with a knee injury - a huge blow to player and club.

“Very sad news,” manager Koeman said after Saints’ 3-0 win at his former club Feyenoord.

“He was going into his second season in Southampton and young, and that type of injury and you lose six or seven months and everybody is disappointed.”

Gardos’ injury, coupled with Alderweireld’s decision to join Tottenham rather than convert his loan from Atlético Madrid into a permanent move, has heightened Koeman’s need to strengthen his options at centre-back.

“That’s the priority, to bring in one or maximum two centre-backs,” the Dutchman said. “It’s too small with Maya [Yoshida] and Jose [Fonte].

“Ok, we have [Jack] Stephens, we have [Jordan] Turnbull, but they are young and still they have to improve themselves and that’s the point for attention at the moment, the centre-back position.”

Why is Mane so hyped on this site? I remember people couldn't wait to get rid of him last season. And he was 6.0-6.5 during that period.

I don't trust him. He's right up there with Mirallas in my book.

Have any of he member accounts where you can look at stats? Speaks for itself... Don't remember anyone rushing to get rid of him last season either

You must of not been around when he blanked 6-7 times in a row.

Kane went through a patch near the end of the season where he blanked like 6 games in a row too and he is a striker. You all still owned him? Did he have an average season also because of that? Fabregas also blanked in patches like that. With the exceptions of Hazard, Sanchez and Silva most other mids did.

The point is trying to own them in their purple patches and Southampton have the fixtures at the beginning for him to maybe hit one.

Fair enough, but when he was "firing" he only scored 5-7 points. I think he only got 2 double digit scores (including his hattrick) We never sold Kane/Fabregas becuase their ownership was extremely high.

You could put it this way. He outscored Yaya (who had an terrible season) by 2 points. I think that tells the story.

Yet Pelle (who also blanked for even longer than 6-7 games) who you prefer to Benteke only scored one more goal than Manè and 12 more points in fpl. You could be right though easy to monitor and get him in anyway

would make a tough choice between cedric for attacking threat and new CB for bonus pts
