Jose Mourinho completed his second summer coup by adding the highly-rated left-back Abdul Baba Rahman to Chelseaโ€™s ranks last week. The versatile 21-year-old โ€“ who can also operate as a midfielder or winger โ€“ arrives at Stamford Bridge for a hefty ยฃ17.7 million from Bundesliga side Augsburg and is determined to make an instant impact at both ends of the pitch:

“I am ready to play and to fight for the club, to give my best. I think competition for places is very important because without it the club wouldnโ€™t go further. Itโ€™s a big challenge for me and Iโ€™m going to fight hard to win trophies with this club and to achieve its aimโ€ฆI’m a left back and, as a defender, it’s important for me to be strong in the tackle, which I always try to be. I also like to get forward as much as possible and help the team in attack. It’s very important because obviously if you can provide crosses from out wide there is a higher chance of providing assists and chances for the team.”

THE HISTORY

Three years ago, Rahman was plying his trade in his home country of Ghana and now he is ready to take on the English top flight. The full-back worked his way up through the Ghanaian leagues and was scouted by top European clubs such as Arsenal, Manchester City and Parma but in the summer of 2012, chose to join newly-promoted Bundesliga side SpVgg Greuther Fรผrth.

By December 2012, Rahman had cemented a starting role with his new side and played every minute of the clubโ€™s league matches from the turn of 2013 to the end of that season. However, the defender didnโ€™t manage to save his side from an immediate relegation into the German second division for the 2013-14 campaign. What followed was a turbulent year for the Ghanaian, as he struggled for pitch time and was rotated in and out of the side. In those two seasons he didnโ€™t pick up a single goal and only managed a sole assist.

However, as the 2014-15 campaign started, Rahman immediately went about improving those figures. In Fรผrthโ€™s second fixture of the season, he bagged a brace and an assist in a performance that helped force through the already imminent ยฃ1.75 million move to Augsburg the day afterwards. That transfer proved to be the making of the youngster, as a series of defensively astute and clinically attacking performances saw the defender mark his name as one of Europeโ€™s brightest young sparks. Rahman ended last season with four assists from 31 appearances (29 starts) in the Bundesliga.

Despite his tender age the full-back has already become first-choice for his country, usurping Leicester Cityโ€™s Jeffrey Schlupp. He played every minute of the 2015 African Cup of Nations, as well as the qualifying matches, picked up three assists in those fixtures and spearheaded his sideโ€™s charge to second place.

THE PROSPECTS

With Filipe Luis returning to Atletico Madrid during the summer, Chelsea clearly needed competition for the left-back berth over the upcoming campaign. The versatile Cesar Azpilicueta offers Mourinho an option in both full-back positions, with the Spaniard affording the Blues an alternative to Branislav Ivanovic on the right of the back-four.

Although the Chelsea defence was relatively settled last term – with Ivanovic and John Terry playing every minute of their title-winning season โ€“ this year could be different. As we saw only last week, where Mourinho hauled off his captain at the break for the first time in his career under the Portuguese manager, changes may be afoot and Ivanovicโ€™s sluggish start to the season could also be a concern.

Both Jefferson Montero and Raheem Sterling made a mockery of the Serb in the opening two Gameweeks of the season, with his lack of pace exposed due to his managerโ€™s insistence on playing a high defensive line. Rahman, however, is quick enough to deal with even the fastest of Premier League wingers. That pace adds to the full-backโ€™s Fantasy appeal as he regularly bombs forward – he dribbled past an opponent 44 times last season, created 24 goal scoring chances in his 31 appearances and produced more crosses than any player in the German top-flight in 2014/15.

Itโ€™s not just his attacking potential that catches the eye, though. In last seasonโ€™s Bundesliga, the Ghanaian made more tackles (108) than any other player, winning an incredible 83% of those challenges, and also succeeding in 67% of aerial battles. He averaged more tackles, interceptions, dribbles and crosses per minute than Azpilicueta and seems to possess both the attacking threat and aerial prowess of Ivanovic, but with added pace to burn.

Having conceded five times in two matches, itโ€™s clear that something is amiss with the Bluesโ€™ backline right now, though. In the first two Gameweeks, they allowed their opponents more big chances (eight) than any side and sit second-worst for shots conceded inside the box (23) โ€“ a far cry from the defence that chalked up the most clean sheets (17) in 2014/15 and shipped fewer goals (31) than any other team.

As weโ€™ve seen before with Mourinho sides, though, Chelseaโ€™s defence โ€“ at their resilient best โ€“ have proven fixture-proof time and again and itโ€™s a little too early to tell just how much of an impact Rahman will have. If he eats away at Ivanovic or Azplicuetaโ€™s minutes, though, and Mourinho continues to curtail Terryโ€™s pitch time, pinpointing a viable route into the Blues backline could prove trickier than ever before.

At 6.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), though, the new boy’s uncertainty of starts will ensure we steer well clear for now until there are signs he can establish himself as a regular. Given that Mourinho described him as โ€œa very good young left-back with potentialโ€ in yesterday’s press conference, it remains to be seen whether Rahman can nail down a starting berth or struggle for minutes like his predecessor.

When people first suggested sell Sahko to Wilson I was wtf when I was going to sell for Diouf instead but I have to admit I'm coming around especially when it's better getting Diouf from gw6 & up to then Wilson has great fixtures.

    The transfers I'm contemplating are (1 ft & 1.5itb)
    (a) Sakho out, Wilson in or
    (b) Sakho, Diouf in (Wilson could be a troll imo) or
    (c) Ayew out (have Gomis), Redmond in (Ayew & Gomis double were a gw3 wc punt v Sun) or
    (d) Westwood out, Redmond in or
    (e) save ft for International break

    Current Team:
    Butland, McCarthy
    Kolorov, Shaw, Williams, Gomez, Richards
    Sanchez, Silva, Ayew, Mahrez, Westwood
    Aguero, Gomis, Sakho

Thoughts appreciated & thanks in advance

Wouldn't you have benched him if you were playing a 3-5-2 and had to bench one of Mahrez/Depay/Wilson?

I am not saying that captain him and I couldn't have even predicted that he would have scored a hat trick but last season I tried a 3-5-2 with a rotating 5th and 3rd striker and benched a lot of points instead you can downgrade 3rd striker for a stronger mid or upgrade a striker. One of the most diificult thing to do predict when a attacker comes good and less benching problems are always better.

The BPS system isn't in his favour. He wouldn't have overtaken Williams without the yellow last week and would've been behind him again this week without the assist (although he does have *slightly* more attacking threat)

        • Fantasy Football Scout Member

Overall he already had more total bps than Williams adding gw1 to gw2. I may be wrong about the impact of the yellow though.

Seems to me key passes and chances created have more weight in bps this season as kolarov showed.

        1. Billy Gilmore
          • 13 Years
          10 years, 3 months ago

Na, Kolarov just had the most remarkable stats I've ever seen for a defender last week.

5 successful crosses, 4 chances created, 2 big chances created, 8 clearances, 1 successful tackle (no unsuccessful), no fouls.

That would be a good day at the office for Silva, let alone a defender.

I had a look at Naughton vs Williams yesterday (initially wrongly) and over the 9 games they played together last season Williams averaged 1.1 more BPS per game and outscored Naughton in 7/9 weeks. Williams just had a couple of off weeks with his BCI in GW1&2 (13 total compared to an average of 14/game last season) but was back to his beastly self yesterday with 19

Am I wrong? I admittedly don't know but it seems odd the way Francis got bonus yesterday too without even keeping a clean sheet

No, it has changed. But Francis probably would've got bonus last season too. 7/7 tackles, 3 chances created, 1 big chance created, 1 assist and decent defensive stats. The tackles are the main one as that's 7 more BPS than last season.

Basically it's bad news for defenders who rely on 90% passing (Kos and Mert) as well as for creative mids who likewise rely on passing (Silva, Hazard, Ozil etc) and good news for GKs. The rest is a bit of a scattergun of minimal effect.

That was all based on this year's BPS changes. And they improved Williams' potential more than Naughton's with the BCI increase.

Naughton is better than Williams anyday in terms of points potential, but only if they played the similar amount of minutes.

My reasoning behind choosing Williams was this.

Looked great against Norwich. Fantastic freekick. Just got a little tired towards the latter stages, should be better once he finds his feet in the league and amongst the clubs. I can just smell the bags of goals he's gonna bring.

He should have move to Liverpool last season.

      Wrong career path.

If you bought him and he can't blank for 1 game you have to question your reasoning behind buying him.

Alright lad's need some opinions on my my team, and if it's worth WCing to this beauty.

    Current team:

    Rutland
    Azpi, Kosc, Williams, Huth, Targett
    Silva, Ozil, Payet, Chadli, Fletcher
    Aguero, Pelle, Sakho (0 FT's)

    WC Team:

    Fabianski, McCarthy
    Shaw, Kolarov, Lovern/Naughton, Francis, Muneisa
    Silva, Sanchez, Shaqiri, Chadli, Mahrez
    Aguero, Gomis, Graham

    (3-5-2)

Really tempted by this team. Opinions lads?

Like it. Strong midfield. Defensive cover if lovren or kolarov dropped/rested
      Any Chelsea outs in case?
