Chelsea’s trip to Blackburn last week was the final straw for many Fantasy managers. Week after week, we’d endured the defensive failings of Jose Bosingwa in the hope that his attacking returns would prove dividend but a place on the bench at Ewood Park prompted plenty to jump ship.

With clean sheets a rarity almost right across the board, Bosingwa’s forward raids always offered hope. A goal, a couple of assists and 7 bonus points early on kick-started a bandwagon that added 0.8 to his 5.5 starting price but as the gameweeks passed, his returns diminished. No clean sheet since the season opener at Stoke, 10 points in his previous seven appearances, part of a back-four that were swept aside at home by a ruthless Arsenal performance- the wheels had fallen off in spectacular fashion.

Saturday’s game certainly suggests the Portuguese player is no longer a first-choice pick. It seems as if Andre Villas-Boas has come to the same conclusion as the likes of Carlo Ancelotti before him- Bosingwa, for all his attacking merits, weakens the Blues back-four considerably. Branislav Ivanovic moved from the centre to take over- the Serb excelled at right-back last season, producing 4 goals and 5 assists compared to Ashley Cole’s zero goals and 5 assists on the opposite flank.

The installation of Ivanovic at full-back proved an instant success- an assist, clean sheet and 2 bonus points returned 11 Fantasy points and more than doubled his points haul for the season. Bosingwa owners are now on red alert and with a two-week international break now upon on, he’s already slipped in price as the “Transfers Out” rack up.

We take a look at both players’ performances at right-back in the previous two games to ascertain the difference in their respective contributions:

Average Positions

A look at the Chelsea average positions from each game shows Bosingwa (17 above) pushed up slightly higher than Ashley Cole (3) on the opposite flank against Arsenal, with John Obi Mikel (12) in a deep position similar to the left-back’s. While Cole and John Terry (26) stayed close together on the left, the gap between Bosingwa and Ivanovic (2) at centre-half was far greater, with Bosingwa’s forward runs leaving Chelsea exposed all-too-often.

While the Blackburn game (below) shows Ivanovic (2) virtually as high up as Bosingwa was against Arsenal, everything is relative. Here, Mikel (12) is level with the Serb and is closer to Ramires (7) than he was against Arsenal. On the opposite flank, Cole (3) is pushed up far higher than the previous game, as is Frank Lampard (8), with Chelsea using the left flank to better effect this time round.

Passing

A comparison of each player’s passing in the respective games is perhaps surprising. Bosingwa made a total of 47 passes against the Gunners, while Ivanovic produced 63 at Blackburn but 17% of Bosingwa’s came in the defensive third compared to just 7% of Ivanovic’s- with the latter far more defensively secure, you’d perhaps expect it to be the other way around.

Going forward, too, there’s an unexpected outcome- 36% of Ivanovic’s distribution came in the final third, compared to just 21% of Bosingwa’s- as a result, he bettered the Portuguese star’s crosses (5 to 3) and produced double the number of goalscoring chances. Bosingwa’s tendency to drift inside is highlighted by 24% of his passes coming from a more central position, whereas Ivanovic’s greater positioning offers better balance and maintains the team’s shape- only 7% of his distribution was away from the flank, with 2% coming from a corner.

A look at each player’s “Preferred Passing” offers a perfect insight into their respective mind-sets. Against Arsenal, John Obi-Mikel linked up with Bosingwa the least of any of the Blues back-four; he received 7 passes and played 4 to the right-back whereas against Blackburn, Ivanovic interacted with Mikel more than any Chelsea defender, playing 11 passes and receiving 15.

Bosingwa’s attacking outlook saw him make only 1 less pass to Ramires, in the right midfield role, than he played to Mikel- Ivanovic, on the other hand, made just 4 passes to Ramires in comparison to his 11 to Mikel, a clear example of his more cautious approach.

Tackling

The best illustration of each player’s contribution to the Chelsea cause is shown by the number of and, critically, position on the pitch of each of their tackles in the respective games. The comparison highlights the flaws in Bosingwa’s game- he made 10 tackles against Arsenal but only 3 of them came in his own half. Ivanovic’s instant solidity on the right flank and reading of the game is summed up perfectly in the above diagram- he made 14 tackles, with only 3 in the opposition half.

Shots Conceded

Chelsea conceded 13 shots against Arsenal and 12 against Blackburn. Looking at the stats alone, it seems like there was little defensive improvement but closer examination as to where the shots arrived from, shows a substantial difference. At home to the Gunners, Villas-Boas’ side were ripped apart- 12 of those shots were inside the box, with just 1 outside their own penalty box. Away at Blackburn, only 4 of Rovers’ attempts were inside the box, with 8 of the host side’s efforts from distance in comparison.

Clearly, the step up in solidity was marked. Unfortunately for Bosingwa and his Fantasy owners, given the thorough and analytically sharp mind of Villas-Boas, it seems highly unlikely that this will have gone un-noticed.

    Given > Vorm
    Bosingwa > McAuley
    Suarez > Rooney

For a 4 point hit. Worth it or not?

Is Rooney expected to go back up front against Swansea? I considered all sorts from keeping Suarez to swapping him for Bendtner but i know i'll want to get Rooney back eventually and he won't be dropping much more than 12.0 really will he?

No one will know until after the Internationals. Depends on Clev and Anderson coming back. We're performing terribly with Rooney in midfield. Really hoping that Clev comes back and gives us that creative spark that can unleash Rooney again.

If Young and cleverley are passed fit before the swansea game then i would go ahead with the hit because Rooney should be moved upfront then. If not then try hernandez.

I really would wait and see where he's playing before getting him in. It's just too much money to risk him being played in midfield. He definitely won't go up in price before Swansea, so if he looks good in that game you can do it straight after before he rises again.

Other transfers look decent. Who will you be rotating with Vorm?

In years gone by the high-ownership players didn't tend to fall much below starting price, as you need 10% ownersip (ish) to drop. Think it's the same this season - so it's possible he could drop again but unlikely to plummet dramatically.

    Given (Vorm)
Kompany, BAE, Enrique, Simpson, De Laet
    Silva, VDV, Cabaye, Walters, Dyer
    Rooney, RVP, Sturridge

    1FT, 0.8 in bank

    Given --->Ruddy/Westwood
    Cabaye--->Drenthe/Sess
    Sturridge --->Ba/Bendtner/Wilkinson/McAuley

    Thoughts much appreciated 🙂

Never take a hit for a player that will play 90 minutes. Especially as you'll need a cleansheet and a few saves to justify taking a 4 point hit. So hold fire on getting rid of Given.

Sturridge is a good player and much better than any of the other cheap forwards. He's also got a few home games coming up.

Cabaye is injured, I'd go for Sess or Drenthe. Although, if you're thinking about getting Big Nic up front, I'd go for wee Royston.

All of these are transfers I am mulling over, the ones I dont do this week will be done in future weeks. I am looking at doing Given and BAE--->Jones and Ruddy over 2 weeks.

I am thinking about Nic up front - I don't think I could bring myself to do it when time comes. Royston - no one in league has him. Some still have Sess from start so Drenthe will be a differential.

    There's a passage I got memorized. Ezekiel 25:17.
The path of the righteous player is beset on all sides by the inequities of the price rises and the tyranny of rotation. Blessed is he who, in the name of assists and clean sheets, shepherds the weak through the valley of the bandwagons. For he is truly his team's keeper and the finder of differentials. And I will strike down upon thee with great points and furious transfers those who attempt to lower and destroy my ranking. AND YOU WILL KNOW THAT I AM THE LORD WHEN I LAY MY WILDCARD ON YOU!

I'm looking to get rid of Ramsey quite soon, as he seems to be assisting the assister atm. Looking at Drenthe to free up some cash. However, as you can see, I have other problems to deal with, particularly Bos and Hoolahan, before I take out Ramsey.

Hey lads know this is a bit random and non footy related but am in TY in school in Ireland and we have to do this thing called mini company where you have to organise things or sell things and try and make money. So far we are organizing an Astroturf comp at school and are donating 100 euro of the profit to the school and our other ideas for after are wrist bands which everyone goes crazy for with writing on them and maybe a day where people try to break different world records and pay for each one they try, other possibilities are a duck race, Fifa 12 comp ate Lunch for younger years and disco/talent show. I'm just wondering would any of you good people have any ideas of events we could organise or things we could sell? 🙂

If you want to get really creative, set-up a garage cleaning/organizing charity event. The key, chose a slick, well dressed, well spoken lad to go to upper-income or upscale (old folks work the best!!!) neighborhoods. Negotiate on two levels: First, the price as an estimate to clean out the place. Second, (if they let you do this part..you're in a mint) anything they would like to donate (ie; vintage clothing, rugs, toys or furniture that can later be resold or even auctioned. It would be useful to have portable internet to reference resell values, antique store levels of quality and designer names and markings.

      Thank me later...

High save totals and two penalty saves have been the main reason. He's always a good option because he's an fantastic shot stopper; Wigan concede plenty of shots on goal and penalties so he will always get points. However, his command of his area is not the best and Wigan's defence is just awful; but with clean sheets a rarity so far this season, his saves have kept him up there.

You have no idea how mental with joy I went when I'd watched Wigan give the ball straight to Bolton over and over, conceding three goals in the process and then Ali saved Davies' penalty. Having him at least keeps things interesting ;).

and people said Al Habsi Vorm was a dumb rotation...it's perfect considering they're both shot stoppers. As cheap as those two are you can't ever be expecting clean sheets.

I still think Krul's chance of clean sheets makes him a better option than Ali long term though, but yeah it's not a transfer I'll be making until Wigan's fixtures toughen up around GW15/16, I'm happy with him. Made some unbelievable saves against Wolves.

    Hi guys,

Wondering if I can seek your professional advise.... I have 2 FT's...

I am downgrading Bossy to Rangel.. Not 100% sure about Rangel but need anyone in that 4.5 bracket.. Any advise? Already have Vorm..

With the above downgrade, I will upgrade Pilks to Sess/ Walters/ Drenthe.. Which one of these three would you recommend? Any others in that price bracket I'm missing?

    Thanks...

Maybe one to watch - If Ivanovic is Chelsea's first choice right back now he's in with a shout - but still a chance of rotation with David Luiz. Great player but a bit of an FPL risk.

    Vorm (Hennessey)
    Bosingwa, Enrique, Kompany (Simpson, Barnett)
    Dyer, Drenthe, Silva, VDV, Walters
    RVP, Rooney (Best)

Already done Petrov > Drenthe. Don't want to have Simpson coming off the bench for Bosingwa so is it worth doing Bosingwa > Walker for a 4 point hit or just leave it?

True Hard Boy. I suppose the fact remains you gotta have him in your team...might as well do it this week..but..people said this about Rooney early season when i was toiling with Van Persie. I kept the faith and Rooney imploded, Persie exploded. Maybe he should wait 'til a nice run of fixtures at least?

I agree with you but i also kept roo over rvp and its cost me, But I do feel if I didnt have Silva it would have cost me if not the same -more. To be fair Silva and Rvp are imo not differentials but in fact essentials and you need them just to stay afloat wiyh your rivals. I am getting Rvp in next at all costs regardless of form/fixtures/good runs etc, And I reckon the same holds true of at the moment player of the year -Silva.

Since it's a slow evening. Who do we think the most underwhelming player is? Or biggest FPL flops?

I think a few of the Villa boys haven't deliered. Remember how much everyone was bigging up Albrighton and N'zog before the season started.

        Spot on with Downing.

Moses was 5m and playing for Wigan. Overblown expectations have made him a disappointment, but when you think about it, he should have been bench fodder all along. I'm happy to keep him through his Desmond period.

Downing however, is big money and has just a couple of bonus points to his name. Perhaps the big Andy Carroll shaped misfit has something to do with his lack of fantasy returns, but for a player of that price (and history) he takes the prize for me so far.

got chucked out a nightclub with his jeans around his ankles, wore pink boots, claimed he was one of the best strikers in the world, RVP stayed fit and was epic so he had to leave to get football, now he's bubbling away quietly, but nicely, at sunderland and given regular starts can only get better.

104 precisely. From my personal experience, people with ridiculously high values are generally poor in ranking. Confusion between what's really important, points or value...

104.7 and dropped for 1st time after 6 green in a row. Went from 1.4m(no roon pig or Aguero) to 150k

just binned Suarez and Given for De Gea(great fixtures if Vidic keeps playing) and Gabby(not so great but in form)
