With just a few days to go until the launch of Euro 2016, the community has been full of useful advice on selecting the key targets for our Fantasy squads. There’s a wealth of guidance from our hot topics posters and the launch of our 2016/17 Membership, which includes internationals data for the first time, has also helped ensure there is some solid statistics for Members table creators to get their teeth into. For our community writers, issues closer to home took precedence as they look back at last season’s chips and ahead to the prospects of the three newly-promoted teams to the Premier League.

The Community Articles

Domestic matters dominated our community articles this week with Kings of Lyon unveiling the final analysis from his Going Out With a Bang league. This was set up to find out how the FFScout community used their chips during the season run in and reveals that those backing Romelu Lukaku in particular were left counting the cost.

Red Lightning, who this week joined the FFScout moderators’ team, has been looking ahead to next season by updating his promoted teams analysis. Stretching back to 2010, this research now includes an assessment of what Hull, Burnley and Middlesbrough can expect from top flight football in 2016/17.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

For our hot topic posters, European matters ruled supreme. Eden Hazardous has been unearthing a raft of key stats for those playing Euro 2016 Fantasy Football to mull over, while Lyonnais has kept on top of the current tournament template that is emerging among the FFScout community.

But not everyone is sticking to the template script. RuthNZ is among those considering investing in Germany’s often benched but shot happy differential Andre Schürrle?

Elsewhere in the community’s Euro 2016 preparation the search for good value defenders continues.

For those looking for more pricey options Spain’s premium picks came under discussion as did whether cutting corners on cost is advisable.

Roy Hodgson’s team selection, which involved omitting Premier League winner Danny Drinkwater and in-form winger Andros Townsend, raised a few eyebrows. The community delivered their verdict on Roy’s choices while we also considered whether England is worthy of Fantasy managers attention irrespective of who plays.

With Hull’s play-off victory securing promotion last weekend, there was still time to get some early preparation in for next season’s Premier League. Mark sparked a discussion on whether yo-yo clubs Hull and Burnley can actually maintain their top flight status in 2016/17.

The Members Tables

This week we unveiled our new season membership which this year includes international data to help pick your Euro 2016 sides. Already those who have snapped up 2016/17 Membership have been busy creating a raft of tables to select the best options during qualifiers and friendlies.

Doosra has created this look at the best defenders, midfielders and deadliest strikers. Among Cheesoid’s tables are his look at those teams that have conceded the most big chances as well as goal scoring defenders. Meanwhile, Fantasy Football Frog has also taken a look at dodgy defences, and some of the strikers and midfielders who are set to profit when they meet them.

For those playing DraftKings Euro 2016 game I’ve constructed this table looking at the high flyers in key scoring categories such as crossing and winning tackles. I’ve also made a table looking at the tournament’s best set-piece takers.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

i prefer the 7.5 options to vardy myself, but nolito is tempting if nailed, especially for someone who's wildcarding after GW1.

Best mid for 7.0 and why?

    A) Fabregas
    B) Grosicki
    C) Matuidi
    D) Other, who?

grosicki and alaba imo. better fixtures, both very attacking teams, alaba's on all set pieces inc. pens. fabregas has been in poor form for a long time now, often struggles to play a full 90, and i'm not sure about spain's attack in general. i'm not convinced matuidi is a reliable source of attacking output.

  5. Kane needs Alli to play number 10.

With Euro 2016 just days away, England fans have reached a remarkable consensus – drop Rooney, their captain and record goalscorer, from the 'Number 10' role, and instead play a 20 year old, fresh from his debut Premier League season. That young man is Dele Alli, and in large part, this collective show of faith can be attributed to his spectacular partnership with Harry Kane this season. Watching Kane and Alli play together, it is clear to see that they are on the same wavelength, with their combinations verging on the telepathic at times.

Statistically, too, their relationship is something out of the ordinary. Alli provided Kane with 7 assists in the league this season, the joint highest amount provided by one player for another. In fact, that total hasn't been bettered in the last seven seasons. Even more incredibly, those 7 assists came in a spell of just 13 matches, over three months of the season. As I investigated the stats behind Kane and Alli's performances together, I noticed something interesting. In 17 of the 21 league matches where Alli started in the hole behind Kane, Mousa Dembélé played in the double pivot in front of the defence. In the 17 games where Kane started without Alli in the hole, Dembélé was in the pivot just 4 times.

You might well question why this observation is worth making. The reason is that Tottenham's results have varied drastically this season, depending on whether or not Dembélé started in central midfield. In the 21 league matches where Dembélé started in the pivot, Spurs were undefeated, winning 13 and drawing 8. In the other 17 games, they won just 6, drew 5, and lost 6. His importance to the team was punctuated by disappointing defeats in the final two games of the season, which the Belgian missed due to suspension. That same ban will continue onto the first four games of next season, casting doubt over the prospects of Spurs assets in our starting squads, Kane and Alli included.

Dembélé does an excellent job in front of the Spurs defence, with league-leading success rates for both tackles and passes. His effectiveness, compared to comparatively lightweight replacements such as Ryan Mason and Tom Carroll, means he is sorely missed when he is unable to play. His importance to Tottenham's clean sheet prospects is clear. However, whilst he turns defence into attack, and gets his team moving forwards, he is far from an attacking threat himself. He had just one assist last season, averaged around one chance created per game, and scored three goals from his six shots in the box. It is not immediately clear why Spurs' key attackers should suffer when he is not playing in the double pivot.

Nonetheless, Kane and Alli certainly did suffer without him there. In 21 starts with Dembélé in the double pivot, Kane scored 20 goals. In 18 starts with Dembélé in the double pivot, Alli scored 7, and got 8 assists. In 17 games without Dembélé playing a deep role, Kane scored just 5 goals, whilst Alli scored 2 in 10 games without Dembélé in a central midfield role. I apologise for the roundabout way of making the point, but this is why I was interested in the mirroring of Dembélé playing in the double pivot and Alli playing in the hole – I suspect that Alli was the key to his and Kane's success, not Dembélé.

When Alli started in the hole, Kane scored 19 goals in 21 league matches. Without him there, he scored 6 in 17. Alli managed 8 goals and 8 assists in those 21 starts, but scored just 1 goal in 7 starts in the double pivot. So far, the stats are unsurprisingly similar to those with and without Dembélé. If we look outside the Premier League this season though, we see that Kane's only goals in cup competitions for Spurs all came with Alli playing in the hole, and without Dembélé on the pitch. He scored in both matches that Alli started behind him in the Europa League, and scored against Leicester in the FA Cup after the pair came off the bench. For England, Kane has scored in both matches he has started with Alli in the hole this season, with one of those goals assisted by Alli, but he failed to score in his other five starts. Of course, this was also managed without Dembélé in sight!

Including those two England games, Harry Kane has scored 4 goals in 9 starts this season when Dele Alli has been in the hole behind him, and Mousa Dembélé has not been in his team's double pivot. Whilst that's still slightly under his goals-per-game for the season, it's worth noting that with 45 shots in those nine matches, he averaged 5 shots per game, beating his average of 4.2 in the Premier League this season. He was let down by a failure to make the most of those chances, with a Goal Conversion rate of 8.9%, compared to his average of 15.7% in the Premier League this season.

Mousa Dembélé missing the first four games of next season is bad news for Tottenham, no doubt about it. His absence may well damage the returns of Dele Alli and Harry Kane at the start of the season. If you ask me, though, that is only likely to happen if Dembélé's absence leads to Alli playing a deeper role, with Alli replacing him in the double pivot. If it seems like Alli will start as the number ten, then, budget and fixtures permitting, I'm fully in favour of doubling up on Alli and Kane, with or without Dembélé.

Not true . Alli played 17 matches in the hole . 6 as LM.
      http://www.transfermarkt.com/dele-alli/leistungsdaten/spieler/207929

Kane scored 14 goals in those 17 matches. And 5 goals in those 5 matches.

A lot of people are connecting Kane's form with Dembele , Alli and etc. I don't agree. I think its a matter of chance that it has happened. Remember in the starting of the season when Kane couldn't buy a goal? His stats were amazing and he was led down by goal CONVERSION. It has been this case throughout the season. I do not expect it to continue into next season. IMO , Dembele is more crucial to Spurs' defence . He is very important to their attack as well but they have wealth of talent to provide Kane those assists in Eriksen , Lamela and Son.

Personally I am 70% starting with Kane depending on his price , not because of Dembele or Alli. Spurs were the best team in the PL last season in my personal opinion and they have a young squad which will only improve with time.

Two of those were sub appearances, so it was 21 starts.

Have a look at Alli's average position in the six games that transfermarkt says he started out wide. He's always central, and often Eriksen is further to the left. Transfermarkt is a great site, but their player positions are not perfect. I'm not saying that he didn't start from the left, but he still got into the same areas, and Alli, Eriksen and Lamela were interchanging throughout games all season. When he played in the pivot, though, Alli's average position is noticeably deeper, and his stats drop off.

I agree with you though. I don't think Kane is dependent on Dembélé, instead I'm arguing that he greatly benefits with Alli in behind him, and that's the main reason for his record with and without the Belgian. In 2014/15, he scored plenty of goals without either of them, though.

Oops sorry but my point really was that Alli had no fixed position. As you say Alli , Eriksen and Lamela were quite fluid and mobile.

          Good argument. +1

Obviously Alli and Dembele improve his performances , no arguing that . But what I AM arguing is that Kane is class and can easily score without them as you say. Also , Poche will obviously be looking to buy better back ups for Dembele and Alli as well. He must realize that Mason and Bentaleb are not good enough to challenge for the title/top 4.

Without looking at positions or starts, but just at FPL points and minutes, Harry Kane got 149 points in the 18 Premier League matches where Dembele and Alli both played at least 45 minutes, an average of 8.3 points per game.
In the other 20 PL matches he only got 62 points, an average of 3.1ppg.

So it looks as if Spurs ought to continue using Alli as a number 10 and perhaps also sign a quality player as cover for Dembele. And of course England should also play Alli rather than Rooney as their number 10.

I wonder how many other good players are also severely affected when key players in their team are missing or played out of position

The points speak for themselves. Dembele equals more goals for Spurs - and therefore more for Kane as their main striker. Without him, as was seen at the end of the season, Spurs are just about a top 10 side, certainly not a top 4 side.

I avoided Kane and benched Alli when Dembele was out - paid off handsomely in 2015/16. Pre season will be an interesting guide as to whether Spurs can actually be a credible source of fantasy points without Dembele next season. Last season's evidence suggests not.

Really considering it, especially with all the new members this season. Is there really any benefit to it though? (don't kill me :D) As far as I know, it's just stats and predictions, right? Does it offer anything I won't get from watching the games?

Well for me it is 100% worth it. A lot of benefits and a lot of interesting stats you can see. Of course it is still possible to be consistently successful from just watching the games (e.g. LR) but I think it is a great tool. 🙂 🙂

Anybody going for Cahill in Euro16 ?....With Kane on free kicks he looks very much like the target man at set pieces from what I've seen...

It's a toughie...plenty of defenders could nick a goal in a lot of teams, and a cleanie. I'm going for three England regardless of the fantasy game...he will be my defensive pick I think...

I guess he and Cahill have equal goal threat. But for 1m less and just the fact that he plays in the midfield and not CB makes me go for dier.

If City sign Laporte, Kroos, and Rodriguez (Ricardo, though James would be nice too) I'd be happy. No need to blow the bank in one season. Line up as:

    ------------------Hart------------------
    Sagna-Kompany-Laporte-Rodriguez
    Gundogan-Fernandinho-Kroos
    De Bruyne-Aguero-Sterling

Perfectly fine. Then we focus on RB, CB, and another CM next year.

LB and RB are big weaknesses. Especially LB. Would love Rodriguez.

I honestly see Laporte and Kroos joining. Pogba and Dybala are far-fetched. Aubameyang could.

"Yeah, there's a tactical tweak I can use. I'll ignore the fact that Milner is a very good set-piece taker and I'll ignore the fact that Rooney is good on set pieces and I'll have my 6' 2" centre forward take corners."

"Oh yeah, I can also create a tactic where he has to move wide in open play, I don't want him central where he does all the damage for his club. And then I can do the same with Vardy, that will be fair."

"It's OK, I have said all along that Russia 2018 is the target for England and as long as we make the last-16 in the Euros I'll be able to point to an improvement."

Ron Manager meets Jackie Charlton. It is desperate, really.

It's pathetic. England can do so much better.

You look at the wealth of managers they have in the Premier League, and then Roy Hodgson is the coach of the national side. Speaks volumes about the English FA.

Milner isn't as good as he was at set pieces. But England don't have any better 🙠Kane taking set pieces is just stupid. We need our fullbacks to provide the width, not the strikers!!! If we have talented lads like Rose and Walker who are used to providing the width for Spurs, even Clyne for Liverpool - why not put them on the same role for England ... 😕

Going heavy on the men on pens:

Iniesta Alaba Siggy Dzsudzsak Matuidi (any other 7.0 penalty takers?) Only have Matuidi for French coverage.

    Muller Bale Shaqiri

Just a feeling, but I think iniesta is the type of player that really performs in big tournaments. He's not needed offensively at Barca, but for Spain, when he's probably their best player (and on pens), I think he could surprise fantasy wise.

That said, if Payet is starting I'll prob swap him with Iniesta and then Grosicky for Matuidi. I just love my penalty takers tho

I had a blast, very easy, took with a pinch of salt. Banked on a few sub appearances etc

    Few dilemmas for my team.

1)With 1.5 in the bank I currently have Schar and Rodriguez and would like to drop one..is rodriguez nailed as the penalty kick taker?

    2) I currently have Hamsik and Mak but would like to drop one for Sigurdsson...Is Hamsik the slovaks penalty kick taker?

    3) If i drop one of Schar and Rodriguez, (other are denayer, hinteregger, ramos) Would you rate Italy to keep cleansheets against sweden and belgium?

    Cheers all!

I'd drop Rodriguez. Hamsik or Weiss will probably take pens. They not had many in past few years. Italy will be solid, Giannchieri sp. could be gold

Calhanoglu over set pieces and penos? Good shout for first game? Stuck between him and perisic

Is he taking penalties? I thought he wasn't. Perisic is nailed in my team since day 1

I fancy Croatia to beat Turkey, so do bookies. Hence my decision to go with Perisic

    KozáÄik (Rui Patricio)
    Juanfran, Schär, Chester (Lindelof, Hinteregger)
    Payet, D.Silva Ozil Perisic (7.5)
    Muller Giroud(c) (Nolito)

    A) Should I go Schurrle, Konoplyanka , Felliani* or Hamsik* for the last spot?
    *Extra captaincy option.

    B) Or Stanciu and use the money to upgrade defence

    What do you reckon?

Been keeping tabs for a while. Konoplyanka is looking very good. Ukraine have goals in them

Not sure I trust Ukraine to have goals in them..the netted less than 1.5 per game in qualifiers..I would go Hamsik, far better team around him than konoplyanka has (even though he is a monster)..I had a tough time between the 2 but chose hamsik as i believe they will finish above wales and russia.

          cheers

He's bang on form and if he isn't scoring he seems to be assisting for Ukraine. They look threatening imo, watched the highlights. Him and Yarm look v. good and Germany are leaking goals so too Poland

Do you think it's a good idea to pick a team based purely on opening round fixtures then Wildcard before match day 2?

No. A few teams will qualify on MD2 and rest players for MD3. Your squad might look a bit rubbish for MD3 if that happens.

So if Paris is flooded would it best to select only tall players as they would cope with the deep water better. Or maybe heavy ones?

    1. djenzio

light ones would float better though...

Is floating the best course of action. A strong current could hinder there movement a heavy wader might be more successful?
