Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp began his first-team restructuring back in February by snapping up the services of Schalke defender Joel Matip. The Cameroon international officially joined the Reds on July 1 following the conclusion of his contract with the German club.

Speaking about Matip, former Borussia Dortmund manager Klopp was quick to heap praise on the defender prior to his move to Anfield:

“He is a top-class centre-half, very young but experienced. You don’t have that too often. To be honest, when I had my break I thought for the next club, I should think about Joel, if there was a need. He’s a real centre-half. He is physically strong, a really tall boy. He’s quick, he’s flexible in his movements and good in technical things. He has played in different systems, with four or three defenders. He scores goals, four or five per season minimum. He is good in the one-on-one and quick. It’s a package.”

THE HISTORY

Born in Bochum to a German mother and a Cameroonian father, Matip began his youth career at SC Weitmar 45, before being scouted by VfL Bochum. He then caught the attention of Schalke, and signed up with the German giants in 2000.

Nine years after joining the club as a youngster, Matip was handed his professional debut against 1. FC Saarbrucken, before making his Bundesliga debut weeks later in November 2009 against Bayern Munich, scoring in a 1-1 draw, and subsequently being named man of the match. He went on to make 20 league appearances during 2009/10, scoring three goals, often playing as a defensive midfielder.

The versatile Matip chalked up a further 26 appearances the following year, and was utilised in a variety of positions, including full-back and centre-half, but it was during the 2011/12 campaign that he established himself in the heart of defence, playing alongside German international Benedikt Howedes.

He featured in 194 league matches for Schalke, producing 17 goals and 12 assists, and also has plenty of European experience, having bagged four goals and two assists over 46 matches in both the Champions League and Europa League.

The 24-year-old made his Cameroon debut against Italy in 2010, and featured in both the 2010 and 2014 World Cup campaigns, scoring against the hosts Brazil two summers ago.

THE PROSPECTS

Matip was immediately handed his debut alongside Dejan Lovren in the Reds’ 1-0 friendly win over Tranmere last week. The new boy turned in a somewhat patchy performance, though Klopp was quick to explain this was down to a lack of fitness as a result of a minor operation:

“..he had a little surgery in the break. He had a screw in his ankle and they had to take it out because of an older injury, so a little bit of infection and only two weeks in training. You could see in the first half that he couldn’t jump, which is actually his big strength. He lost one or two headed challenges. You see in preseason, that’s okay, that’s not okay and you work on it or you ignore it, whatever.”

Certainly, the six-foot-four centre-half will add an aerial presence to the Reds’ defence next season. Matip won 118 headers for Schalke last year – over 40 more than any Reds backline option – and his arrival should help improve a defence that led the way for errors (32) in 2015/16.

In terms of the Liverpool pecking order, Uefa’s decision to overturn Mamadou Sakho’s suspension last week allows the Frenchman to resume training and battle it out with Lovren and Matip for a place in Klopp’s back-four.

Delving into the defensive data, Matip (5.4) was behind both Lovren (6.6) and Sakho (6.4) for clearances per appearance last year. On the upside, his average of 1.0 blocks was level with Sakho and more than Lovren (0.6), whilst an average of 3.1 interceptions per outing was almost the combined total of Sakho (1.7) and Lovren (1.5).

Although Liverpool only managed to keep eight clean sheets in 30 league matches under Klopp last season, conceding 40 times, the underlying statistics are far more impressive.

During Klopp’s time in charge, they rank second for the fewest number of shots conceded from inside the box, big chances against and minutes per shot conceded. It’s worth remembering the German boss played a weakened team in many matches during the final weeks of the season though, with their Europa League campaign taking priority, which does skew the numbers slightly.

Looking ahead to next season, the likely upside of Liverpool’s total of 50 goals against over the entirety of 2015/16 is that none of their defenders will be expected to come in at more than 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL). A lack of European competition next season should also afford Klopp time to roll out a settled side and see far less of the rotation that blighted the final few months.

The acquisition of new keeper Loris Karius from Mainz could also boost our opinion of the Reds’ clean sheet prospects. The 22-year-old saved 74% of shots faced last season, compared to Simon Mignolet’s 63%, which suggests he could quickly oust the Belgian as the new number one.

Should Klopp – as expected – also look to also address the left-back position and replace Alberto Moreno, we could see significant improvement in the Reds defence next term. While Nathaniel Clyne will offer something of a proven commodity to Fantasy managers, Matip’s consistency of attacking output – he’s scored three times in five of the last six seasons – ensures he’ll be one to watch if he can nail down a regular role.

Liverpool’s dire opening schedule may well temper initial investment, though. With work still ongoing on the main stand at Anfield, the Reds have switched their clash against Burnley in Gameweek 2 to Turf Moor – essentially handing them four away matches in the first five fixtures.

Given that three of those trips are to Arsenal, Spurs and Chelsea, and their one home match is against champions Leicester, many will steer clear to start with, allowing us to assess Klopp’s defensive regulars before the fixtures take a turn for the better in Gameweek 6.

You could add Amavi and Gueye, who both were really good despite their team flopping (and one of them being injured half a season). Hopefully they have relegation release clauses in their contracts. Amavi will be the French starting LB before summer 2017 if he gets back to big league football.

Yeah, I know Evra thinks he's eternal. 🙁

And he is a sort of leader of the team, unfortunately. But everybody seems to think this was the last chance saloon for the lateral defenders, and France has a strong crop of up and coming laterals and the competition should now be open for them all.

Of course, if Evra says he still plays.... maybe he will. Does Deschamps have balls to drop him? Not sure. But that would be awful waste of talent. They have Amavi, Kurzawa, Digne, Mendy... a lot of young international level LB's. Even Kolodziejczak started as a LB and can play there. And then there's that Hernandez guy entering the scene as well.

Behind Sagna and Jallet there's less crowd, but for example the Lille laterals Corchia and Sidibe (who could also play on left) are waiting for their chance and many think they should have already got it, particularly after some PSG stars wanted Corchia for their new RB after they played against him and Sidibe joined Dortmund. Deschamps seems to give a lot of weight to the club, so if they play in big clubs they could get their chances. If not, then not.

Wow, you've made your homework. Great knowledge about French players there.

I agree with all except for the last bit, " so if they play in big clubs they could get their chances. If not, then not". I think Didier gives too much emphasize on his tactics hence the Gignac-for-Giroud pick and Sissoko, despite he's playing for Newcastle (a big club in England but not in Europe). And there's Kante, whom I think Didier picked based on performance rather than club size. But yo're spot on, he won't get rid of the old horses just yet.

Gignac may have indeed been seen as a "2nd Giroud", which he clearly was not. A mistake, imo. He could have got something different and better from Gameiro or Lacazette.

But Deschamps has openly said it that he prefers players who play big games against top opponents constantly. As he rates the big PL clubs, that gives some advantage to all players who play constantly in PL, because they get to play Chelsea, City, Arsenal etc. a few times every season. And a bit same for La Liga and Bundesliga, although apparently not as much, which is surprising (the non-selection of all Sevilla players, except for the donkey defender Rami who was probably selected for experience when running out of defenders).

Sissoko is there for that reason, and from old memory. Deschamps likes him for some reason.

I actually tried to say that if the young laterals get to play on the big stage, they may just as well get starts for France. But Evra is a difficult case because of his influence and leadership.

There's something rotten in Newcastle though, I wouldn't judge too much. Saivet is class, for sure, and it's tough to say why they bought him when they didn't use him. A bit like Tabanou. I recall this article where Swans coach said that he had seen a video of Tabanou (half a season after he joined the club) and was surprised about watching an attacking player, taking on the defenders, getting crosses and shots etc. Great scouting there! He had only played like most of his career as left wing or AM. 😆 Not sure what they thought they were buying.

😆 Yeah, he used to be a promising striker, strangely turned into a very good CM, but he's been so consistently good for Bordeaux, there's no way he all of the sudden was so bad he couldn't get to play for Newcastle. For some reason, he just was not fielded. Too good for the Championship.

It's a major source of their revenue and what they're doing is unfair to the people who don't have access or can't afford HD. So I don't think they'll totally get rid of the PL.

I don't agree. Well, I do with the Big Sam bit. But Hodgson did get the players to be happy with a possession-based game, which was a step forward from previous managers. I didn't think his appointment would be anything more than a stepping-stone, but he has created a very necessary transition in the way the team can play. I doubt Allardyce will improve on this, so it does need to be someone else. But I don't think the Hodgson era was a complete waste of time.

It was possession, ok, but no progression in last third/fourth of the pitch. England's game was very dull against well organised, deep defences.

I couldn't agree with you more on that. But, like I say, small gains.

Slow, ponderous attacks, players playing out of position, mental fortitude of the players, favouritism, leadership, ability to adapt - all these (and more) need to be fixed before England fans can even begin to enjoy a tournament again.

You're right. Why I really didn't rate Hodgson's work is that I just think that if I was the head of FA, I would like to see more than such small gains with these players. It's not as if they weren't used to possession football in their club sides already.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    FPL three striker line up

I think even without knowing prices it would be fair to assume that the likes of Aguero and Ibrahamovic are likely to be costly purchases.

Are you keen on getting both no matter what the cost?

Or does only one of these expected premium heavyweights appeal?

If you do spend a good chunk of your budget on these two - which cheaper third striker do you favour?

100% going with them Aguero and Ibra. No international football means their minutes wont be questioned. Captain every week locked in.

3rd striker is a tricky one without prices. Ighalo, Deeney, Gray, Rhodes, Bojan all on the watchlist.

I don't see the appeal in Ibra, ultimatley he's no spring chicken and I think he'll struggle with the pace of the PL.

This. Only reason why I would consider owning him Ag the start of the season is because United have an 'easy' schedule, and Zlatan scores most of his goals against lesser opposition. But he will not justify his price tag against the top sides

      2. The_Socca_Philosopha

True, however even at his age he still possesses a lot of physicality and pace, which can go far in the PL. Ultimately, I think he'll fare really well at the start of the season but peter out as the long, convoluted schedule in England stretches on because, as you said, he's no spring chicken.

I like lining up with 2 premium forwards and a cheapie generally.

I can see both Aguero and Ibra being in my team if I can fit them in price wise. Then a cheaper striker like Wilson alongside them.

Kane, Vardy, Costa, Batshuyai, Sturridge etc could be differentials from the off!

Yep, can I see him getting around 20 goals? No.

People can argue that he has made the jump from other leagues in the past, but he's 34 now coming to arguably the toughest league in the world. Yes he had a stellar season last year, in a one-team league with PSG....

That's what you want from an 11.0m striker. Otherwise you're p***sing value away in his pricetag.

Lukaku has been consistently hitting 15/16 goals each season and is expected to come in about 10.0m. I think he'll turn out to be much better value than Ibrahimovic.

Jose's judgements are better than everyone one here, myself included. Jose simply wouldn't have bought him to be his number 1 striker if he didn't believe he could get over 20 goals for united this season. If he scores gw1 he'll be too risky to go without gw2 - he'll to the captain poll. Far too risky to go without.
And then you say an out of sorts lukaku would be better value than Zlatan for a million less. Lol 😀 . Then we're expected take advice from your articles 😀 😉

Jose brought in Falcao after his flop at United, another striker we expected to get 20 goals. How did that work out Dazzy?

Or let's see how about when Eto'o came back in 2013/14? Yeah that went well...

Oh and who else was there? Drogba came back under him in 2014/15 and scored a mere 4 goals over 28 games....

Not to mention the complete embarrassment that was Loic Remy. Should I continue about Mourinho's track record with older strikers?

Let's just mention that Ibrahimovic is 34, has never played in the Premier League and is coming to a team in complete transition. By all means gamble 11m on him. He might score 15 goals, but when you consider VORP (which my article talks about), I believe other strikers will score more per 0.5m than Zlatan

Falcao, Drogba etc were all bought as 2nd or 3rd striker option behind someone like Costa. Zlatan is going to be the nr1 striker. And if you still think the PL is the strongest competition there is you need to wake up

I never said the strongest I said arguably the toughest

Many come over at the peak of form and fitness and just don't adapt, e.g. Depay, Falcao, etc.

I'm not saying Zlatan will do bad. I just see so many trying to justify spending 11.0m or so on him when there are so many question marks over him and so many better value for money options

                    9 years, 4 months ago

Falcao at peak form and fitness? He came in off the back of a major cruciate injury.

Okay fair point with Falcao, he was coming back after an injury but the same argument for him doing well in the PL was that he had scored buckets of goals elsewhere. And when he went to Chelsea that was a year after said injury was it not?

Anyway what about Depay, Schweinsteiger, Juanmi, Lens, Njie, Otamendi, Wijnaldum, Darmian just to take last year? They struggled as players with high expectations.

As I've said before yes players like Aguero and Costa came in with instant impact. They were younger and fitter than Zlatan coming from La Liga where it's more than just a one-horse race than Ligue 1. Zlatan is 34, he's hasn't looked good with Sweden over the summer and he could struggle big time. And he's coming into a team going through massive changes. I'm not expecting fireworks.

None of these strikers were bought as Jose's number 1. Zlatan is the main man. I know it was in the French league but his goalscoring record was still exceptionally good. Forget vorp, Zlatan is the best captain option gw2. Vorp doesn't matter there either. There is also the risk of not owning him that week. You'ld be panfish chasing a lead after gw2 , last season all over again 😉 .

I didn't have Kane, Mahrez or Vardy for the first 5 Gameweeks last season and finished 742 in the world

The "chasing a lead" argument doesn't wash.

By all means spend a quarter of your budget on two players, but I'll be making sure I can afford more proven PL players like Sanchez for the same price as Ibra.

The argument certainly washes. If you're in a good position and play sensibly it's unlikely you go backwards. If your chasing a lead and take some points that don't come off, things can end disastrously. The difference between having a good start or not depends if you have the highly owned players that get points. By all means have a few differentials but going without someone that good, highly-owned and with those fixtures seems ludicrous to me

It's not a wait and see situation it's likely take 2 transfers to get him in. As I said you may end up in a bad rank and having to buy him at a more expensive price. If Zlatan fails many other fpl players fail with you and it is very easy to transfer him out.

He's got power and pace and until the long season wears him down, I think those two attributes and the talent around him will be enough to get him a bunch of goals in the first couple months. After that, I'd be willing to look elsewhere

I am not considering Zlatan at this stage yet.
I would like to monitor his gametime at ManUtd and his impact in PL, noting the aggressiveness of PL defenders as compared to Ligue1. Bear in mind that he flopped in the Euro because he was closely marked, which I expect PL defenders to do.
Moreover, Mou also said that Zlatan will have a coaching role, so I'll better wait and see.
I'll start with Kane and Kun maybe.

Newcastle midfielder Moussa Sissoko says he is unconcerned by the £35m price tag placed on his head by the Magpies.

"Newcastle would ask for £35m? It could be 20 - for me it changes nothing," he told L'Equipe.

"The interested clubs will know how to find common ground. I hope that it will be as early as possible."

I hate seeing this kinda crap from relegated footballers.

You weren't good enough, you shouldn't be guaranteed a safety net just because you're one of the more talented players at a club, you still contributed to that club being relegated.

I hate that dude too, but he made a valid point that he wants to stay in the NT and won't if he plays the Championship. And that £35M is a bit rich, you've got to admit it. They got him for €3M just a couple of years ago, didn't they? And it's not as if he had become much better or achieved immensely a lot since then.

If he wants to stay in the NT but won't if he plays in the championship, then he should have contributed more to Newcastle during the season is all I'm saying.
He should carry the responsibility of restoring Newcastle to the PL, but all that's going through his mind is "my teammates have let me down, I'm too good to be here now, I deserve to be in the French NT and these puny Englishmen won't help me get there so I need a transfer asap."

He's definitely not worth £35m, but why should Newcastle sell him for any less than they value him if he's contracted to them and they need to gain promotion asap? He just comes across as an idiot to me.

Well yeah, I agree, he should have contributed more. But it's not as if he could have saved the team alone either.

I agree that he's a money grabbing selfish b**tard and don't think he should be in that French NT anyway, just saying that if they can get a £20M from a player who they bought for €3M couple of years ago and who doesn't want to stay, for reasons that clearly are going to bug him, they should sell him. He's going to throw his toys and won't play, I guarantee you. He'll sit out his contract and they'll be left with nothing.

He was crap for Toon last season, because he couldn't be arsed. Soon as he plays in a Euro Championship Final he decides 'ooh perhaps I'll put some effort in for this one'. No thanks!

So he's rotating his 5 GK with his 4.5 sub?

And his two 4.5 defs to play 4 defs in a GW?

And his 6.5 mid with his 7.0 striker? What will happen when the 8.0 - 9.5 strikers (I believe there'll be many) go wild?

Fair enough but the keeper at Everton may need to be rotated.
2 4.5 rotations not OTT really even if there are expensive alternatives.
The rotation options up front both can be used or not and a defensive rotation coming in.
There could be strikers with value at 8 to 9.5 but MK and Mahrez will have to be worse.

            9.5 on goalkeepers
No structure to the defence - also far too expensive
Firmino a bad option with his fixtures
            No hazard or ibra
Rotating attacking players is just stupid. Just play 3 at the back and seven in attack with one bench fodder and the rest playing well in week out
            Aguero @11.5 lol 😀 😀 😀

              9.5 on Keepers not OTT
Plenty of structure in defense as I consider Everton a possible rotation with the cheapies.
Firmino is fixture proof and I worry more about gametime.
No Hazard or Ibra but then no Kun/Mk/Mahrez if I got them. I can only pick a few.
Rotating attacking players not as stupid as it seems. It happened a lot last year.
Kun injury and gametime I expect to be adjusted down.
Who knows anyway. Put your team down!

9 is the maximum that should be spent on his. If you're rotating a 4.5 million one the other one can't be more than 4.5
If you're going to do a three way rotation none of the defenders should cost more than 4.5
Liverpool & Firmino not great away ecspecially against bigger teams. He's also overweight.
Rotating players is stupid, ecspecially when your rotating 7 & 6.5 players while playing valium wilson with poor fixtures week in week out.
                Kun will be 12.5 minimum

                My team:
Jakupovic @4 if not Foster, 4.0
                Azpi, Shaw, Rangel/Naughton/Taylor, Ward/Souare
                Hazard, Siggi, Tadic, undecided, 4.5
                Aguero, Zlatan, D.Gray
