We continue our series of members’ articles, which review the numbers behind the 2015/16 season, with a look at Stoke City.

To get up and running, we delve into the Potters’ data and compare them to the rest of the Premier League, before assessing their first-team squad, main goal threats and creative sources as we look for some pointers ahead of the upcoming 2016/17 campaign.

Despite finding the net on 41 occasions, Mark Hughes’ side still finished in ninth position for the second successive season. Although they mustered just three points less than 2014/15 – picking up 51 points – it’s fair to say that the Potters’ threat in the final third took a turn for the worse in a season that saw just nine of their players find the net.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Only because Klopp was having to deal with multiple leagues/cups towards the end, not to mention Sturridge and Origi were injured.

All their strikers are fit and currently only playing in the PL, i imagine Firmino will go back into an attacking mid

Not taking away from his potential. I think he's a great fpl asset if they use him correctly. Just unfavourable fixtures to start with most planning on using WC early to tweak things, might wait until then to consider pool players.

What are your thoughts on building a team with the intention of WCing in GW4? I really see it as a viable strategy. Hear me out...

-the 2 WC system means that there isn't much merit in holding onto WC #1 for long
-it allows you to take advantage of early fixtures without even thinking past GW3
-it allows you to take punts
-it allows you to jump on early bandwagons in the knowledge that you can hop back off in GW4
-it means you don't need a plan to bring in Sanchez/Payet/etc after internationals as you'll use WC

Thanks for the reply - i just think that it's different this year (and admittedly last year) with the new WC system. I don't think there is much value in holding your first WC personally

its not really holding. i wildcarded it at gw8 because my team nèeds it.

i usually find bandwagons easy to fit in with 1 or 2 early hits.

people are really rating Michi, he had a a great season in the French League which is a lot less competitive than the PL/

Mane actually had a greater chance per minute ratio last season.

Mane's finishing was terribke though, so maybe Batshuayi is better at converting

He had a bad spell but there was a lot going on behind the scenes between him and the manager and the reports are he wasn't happy with the system Saints used, once he got over his bad spell he was banging them in.

        1. Somalion
          • 15 Years
          9 years, 4 months ago

He blanked for 19 league games(20 actually but was benched for one) . That's not a bad spell, that's half a season. I rate him btw, but it was more his inconsistency flared and his finishing was poor.

          1. djenzio
            • 11 Years
            9 years, 4 months ago

wasn't there an issue with the manager though? I know he didn't turn up for training or something..

yeah it was a very bad spell he had but is creation ration was still high, and I think he will play better under the Klopp system

            1. Somalion
              • 15 Years
              9 years, 4 months ago

Yes, Mané has a stinking attitude, as has been noted previously and probably one thing he needs ironing out.

Again, his chance per minute ratio may be better, but it means nowt if he isn't scoring goals. The Klopp system may well suit him in terms of speed or pressing, but it doesn't change his innate finishing skill. But he's still very young.

Tbh, I find the whole comparison strange. Why is Mané, a winger, even being compared to a striker?

Payet, Martial, Lloris, HBA, Mahrez, Kante, Ibra, Drogba, Henry to name but a few imports from the "less competitive" French league

        9 years, 4 months ago

Of course the league has some excellent players but it is less competitive than the PL, the PL is prob the most competitive league out there.

I wouldn't call Martial a success just yet, didn't have an amazing first season and looked poor when he played for France.

          • 15 Years

It's actually very competitive once you take PSG out of it and had it's own Leicester-style story last year (before PSG inevitably ran away with it) PSG would probably rule the BPL too though.

I'd say 25 goals+assists in 50 games for a teenager playing his first season in England and under a very defensive LvG is a success.

          1. djenzio
            • 11 Years
            9 years, 4 months ago

didn't PSG only loose one game all season though?

I don't know if PSG would run away with the BPL, they were poor in the CL and City got further than them, a team who came 4th in the BPL.

yes but if you look at Liverpool last season the were better against top 4 teams, especially away from home.

Fixtures have to be subjective, you can't just assume Liverpool away to Man City is a bad fixture for Liverpool when you look at our record against City last season.

Liverpool play with a system that works better against better teams, teams that attack more got slaughtered by Pool last year where as teams who sat back and sat deep, Pool found it hard to break them down.

Sure, but it's a new season and it's tough to assume teams will be the same as last year. Look at chelsea last season, great example of how things can change. Not saying that pool can't beat those top teams. Just easier to base picks off fixtures to start than tinker after an early WC after scouting players like firmino and Mane after a couple tough fixtures

I'd say that may be true for teams that took a new manager, which happen to be nearly all the top teams (Utd, Chelsea, City)

but teams with stability, let's say Spurs, you know mostly what you're going to get.

      Hello.

Should see more gametime than last year due to rotation but Mahrez is nailed on one wing - leaving him to compete with Gray, Albrighton and possibly Musa for the other spot. I think CR sees him as a winger as opposed to fullback.

Cheers! That's a lot of competition for the wide spot. I rate him as a player so maybe Claudio will give him a run of games sometime in the season, but will leave him out for now

Interesting to note that Musa played CF last night & Schlupp scored off the right wing though. And obviously Mahrez will rest at some point.

Silva is my attempt at compensation, I love aguero but it does lose all balance and the forwards are too expensive this year, much more value in midfield imo

      What attack do you prefer?

      A:

      KDB Hazard Feghouli Fischer 4.5
      Aguero Ibrahimovic Gray

      B:

      Hazard Firmino Eriksen Townsend 4.5
      Aguero Rooney Gray

      C:

      Hazard KDB Mkhitaryan Townsend
      Aguero Wilson Gray

      * A & C would require turning my 5th defender from a 4.5 to a 4.0

Also dependant on how strong your backline is

Neither of them are nailed at this stage, but expect Downing to get lots of minutes initially either as a starter with Fischer coming on, or vice versa.

Karanka does like Stuani, but only plays him on the right hand side, but Adomah has that shirt

Terry > Baines/Coleman OR Courtois > Heaton/Foster (no need to double up straight away)

Dont think Dier as a midfield is a decent fantasy option, his appeal last season was as an OOP defender playing in mid. There are better options for £5.5m, though if you downgrade your keeper you'll be able to upgrade to a £6.5m which have more options.

City defence is iffy with a new manager coming in, Sagna may not be nailed

Otherwise i like it, tough to create a team to accommodate the power house up front

Unsure of whether your two £4m defenders will ever play, Paredes has competition with Nyom i think(?)

Great midfield except for Fabregas, how does he fit into the new Chelsea formation? 4-2-4 or 4-4-2 with both strikers playing?

Think there are better options than Rondon. Hopefully if Berahino goes to Stoke then there is your 3rd striker but currently Wilson/one of the Soton boys are a better bet. Could even downgrade one of your keepers to a non playing to upgrade to Benteke (depends if you want to either rotate GK or stick and play one)

Paredes is just bench fodder tbh so I'm not worried about him unless a nailed 4.0 shows up. Fabregas is a risk, yes. May draft Siggy if he's 7.5 (can't remember atm). WBA have great opening fixtures, and Rondon looked good at the COPA. Not sure how Soton will set up their frontline. Wilson could supplant Rondon (good memories of him last year). I'm willing to pass on Tekkers with Townsend in my midfield. Thanks for the input mate!
