Romelu Lukaku breaks his six-month barren spell by taking it out on a beleaguered Sunderland back four. The Belgian’s second half blitz transformed Everton as Ross Barkley watched on from the bench having been hooked at half-time. Here’s the final Stock Check of Gameweek 4….

On the Rise

Romelu Lukaku
Without a goal in his previous 12 Premier League matches, Lukaku notched his first and then filled his boots as Sunderland caved in.

You could almost see the Belgian grown in stature and confidence and with Yannick Bolasie storming down the right flank, Lukaku was able to help himself to a hat-trick in just 11 minutes.

He could and should have had more – Lukaku registered nine efforts on goal, six of which hit the target – no player in any Gameweek this season has matched those statistics.

With Middlesbrough at home next, followed by meetings with Bournemouth and Palace, it would seem that Everton’s fearsome front man has found form just as the fixtures fall into his lap.

Should he return points against Boro, those who brought in Lukaku for Aguero may well face a difficult decision come Gameweek 6.

Yannick Bolasie
A barnstorming performance from the DR Congo winger terrorised the Sunderland defence which culminated in him laying on Lukaku’s second with a sublime run and cross.

While Bolasie’s 6.0 price tag looked a step too far at Palace, in this kind of form and with Lukaku converting his supply, it suddenly seems very tempting indeed.

The winger was replaced late on with a knock, although he appeared to be suffering from cramp.

Leighton Baines
Back to back clean sheets and two bonus points tonight, Baines is up and running without finding assists or converting a spot-kick as yet.

The aforementioned fixtures could offer further returns, with Koeman’s Everton looking far more secure and efficient than the version under Roberto Martinez.

In Decline

Ross Barkley
Koeman’s ruthless decision to hook an ineffective Barkley sent a sure-fire message that will have shook the midfielder’s 18.6% ownership.

Brought in by over 60,000 prior to Gameweek 4 ahead of Everton’s favourable schedule, it’s now clear that Barkley’s pitch time is far from secure – Koeman will not be as lenient as Martinez with an inconsistent Barkley.

Everton’s second half transformation without him certainly puts Barkley’s start against ‘Boro in doubt.

Mason Holgate
Owned by 7.1% and transferred in by no less than 180,000 FPL managers heading into the Gameweek, it nonetheless came as no surprise when the 19-year-old gave way to Seamus Coleman.

It was convenient while it lasted but Holgate’s opportunities will now be limited at best. Even if Koeman switches to a three-man defence, he would seem unlikely to earn starts.

Patrick van Aanholt
The Dutchman stuck to his guns against a lively Bolasie in the first half but bizarrely, with Bolasie swapping flanks, he struggled in the second 45.

Caught out of position on numerous occasions, he may yet come under threat, although Moyes’ options appear limited.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Put PVA in my side because I like his attacking returns a lot but seeing them today, I'm not sure of clean sheet potential (never really was). Still, was hoping would deliver there. Sunderland in general don't inspire confidence of ownership.

PVA is not worth 5 just for some cheeky attacking returns. Spend it on williams and enjoy

this. first and foremost your defender should get you defensive returns. my philosophy anyway.

if they have assist/scoring/pens potential, thats great. But first things first, CS.

Another tough match coming up for Hull. Arsenal in town and very heavy favorites at this point according to the bookies. I'll be duly impressed if Hull can keep them to a goal or under. So far, they haven't conceded more than that in a game. Also hope whatever ends up happening with the ownership saga, Mike Phelan gets a shot at being the permanent manager there, he's earned that much for sure.

    Evening fellas

Things seem to have gotten really crazy on here so thought I'd check out the deadzone

Any thoughts on these options would be much appreciated

    1ft, 1m itb

    A) gray > deeney/Defoe/Benteke
    B)Ramirez > snod grass
    C) pieters > baines
    D) save

No moves are urgent so no rush

      A) if there is any development with Gray's situation. If not, transferring to Benteke would be slightly better than keeping him, but not sure I would burn a FT to do it.

      B) I have come around to appreciating Snodgrass, looking to get him in my own squad soon, probably on a WC when I bring Kun back. I'd have to know the rest of your team though to determine if that was your most pressing issue in midfield.

      C) I'm also coming around to Baines, and not really just because he might still be on pens. The guy clearly has found his overall form again and that team looks like they are very strong this year.

      D) since you still probably have your WC, I would just need to know what your plans are for it before thinking about the best use or non use of a FT this week.

I would do Gray to Benteke.

Pieters I assume is hot 4th defender. Fixtures lighten up for Stoke soon.

Gray is not going to get any service. He seems lien a good forward but without service he will struggle to deliver. Benteke playing in a Palace team as focal point should be good. You could immediately see Palaces approach was to put in cross after cross. The big man will oblige.

    a. Ozil to Firmino
    b. Snodgrass to Bolasie

Ozil and Snodgrass are in great form and won't be rested, be patient and points will come. PVA could probably be a decent trade though looked quick but not too dangerous and i can't see too many clean sheets for Sunderland this year, they looked very sloppy against Everton.
      team looks excellent though.

Not sure I agree with the ditch Barkley advice being given out now. He got a wake up call tonight. He won't be allowed to phone it in, or sulk about not getting handed a spot on the national team, not with this kind of team, not with this kind of manager. If you think he's the type to disappear after a wake up call, then yeah by all means drop him. But I don't, and they still have that great fixture run ahead of them, so in my opinion it is a waste of a transfer. I'd prefer to give him another week and see how he responds.

      1. Shifty
        • 12 Years

cheers Pink Caddy. Seems like he's not the strongest mental character out there though. I mean, one England snub and he starts blaming Roy Hodgson for cold storaging him and now a pathetic 45min performance? Hmm.

        1. Pinky Blinders
          • 9 Years
          9 years, 2 months ago

Not sure too many people were calling me the strongest mental character when I was 22. But I get your point. I think a lot of coaching at this level is turning young players into professionals. And so far, I think Koeman is taking the right approach. With Lukaku it was praise and confidence. With Barkley it might simply be a snap of the reigns to make sure he understands that there are a lot of hungry players on that team looking for game time so he has to be laser focused week in and week out. His ceiling is quite high, so I hope he'll take this as a learning experience and grow stronger from it. But of course I could be all wrong and he ends up being a total punk. BTW, you should address Gray first and foremost. I think the rest of your team is solid, so no need to overly stress.

          1. Shifty
            • 12 Years
            9 years, 2 months ago

Yea it seems like Koeman's decision was quite deliberate - there was some soundbite from Koeman being unhappy about Barkley blaming Roy. I trust Koeman to do the right thing - seems like a great manager in all sense of the word.

Cheers for the opinion Caddy. Agree Gray is the biggest issue. Looking at a GW6 WC in any case...so just need to decide if a hit is warranted to get Barkley out.

    hey guys

Think my plan to ship out lukaku to get aguero when he returns is out the window now.
Which option do you think is best to get aguero?
    1) Ozil, Sterling, Benteke --> Cazorla, Snodgrass, Aguero
    2) Ozil, Sterling, Benteke --> 4.5 mid, Firmino, Aguero (Play capoue as 4th mid)
    3) Ozil, Benteke --> 4.5 mid, Aguero (play capoue as 4th mid)
or stick with original plan of
    Benteke, Lukaku --> Diomande, Aguero

    Thanks!!

TM when is either one of Benteke or Gray expected to rise/ fall?

    Benteke 27.8%
    Gray -62.1%

Have exact cash for Gray > Benteke. Would be ideal if neither price changed until after CL games.

So do I but fff gives a percentage of how fast someone is rising or falling

Not much transfer wise in the next 2 days probably. Wouldn't trust the %'s too much though. You only have to get through a day if CL is the only issue.

Short week so not much to worry about, just can't miss a rise/ drop and I'm good.

Why do you say don't trust the percentages?

Players rising before 100% like Ibra today. Might settle done with less WCs.

Current team now looks like this, what do you think?

    Heaton Foster
    Stones Valencia Evans Friend Amat
    Sanchez Hazard Firmino Redmond Hobjberg
    Ibrahimovic Lukaku Iheanacho

Any glaring errors? WC to get Aguero in next week is the plan!
