A dour Anfield affair offered scant reward for Fantasy Football managers as defences came out on top.

That added up to another ineffective evening for Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who played his part in a guarded United performance, resulting in another blank with inevitable Fantasy Premier League sales to follow.

Here’s the final Stock Check of Gameweek 8…

On the Rise

Nathaniel Clyne
Owned by less than 9% of Fantasy Premier League managers, the Liverpool right-back shook off a knee problem to start and play his part in a first clean sheet of the season for the Reds. Clyne claimed the maximum bonus points on offer after winning all four of his attempted tackles.

Priced at 5.5, his stock is somewhat limited by his price point which, in the current landscape, presents a significant obstacle. Dejan Lovren, at 4.9, remains our preferred route into Jurgen Klopp’s rearguard.

With West Brom, Crystal Palace and Watford up next, further defensive returns for Clyne and Lovren could be on the horizon.

David de Gea
A world class save from Philippe Coutinho’s long-range effort kept the scoreline at 0-0 and helped De Gea to only his third save point of the season.

The Spaniard also edged a bonus point as United won their third clean sheet of the campaign – their first since Gameweek 3 as the Spaniard’s 40% ownership fetched belated returns.

Jose Mourinho’s rearguard takes on Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in Gameweek 9, followed by an Old Trafford meeting with Burnley and a trip to Swansea City.

In Decline

Zlatan Ibrahimovic
Almost inevitably, Ibrahimovic suffers a further blow as he blanked for the third Gamweek in four and picked up a second successive yellow card.

That’s now just four points in four Gameweeks, during which time his price has dropped from 11.9 to 11.4, with more than 620,000 showing him the exit.

The Swede will dominate the transfers out column again heading into Gameweek 9, with Diego Costa and Romelu Lukaku the major benefactors of the continued fall-out.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

      A) Redmond -> Allen
      B) Antonio -> Walcott
      C) Both A and B for a hit

Already have Sanchez, and Allen would be 4th mid. Thoughts?

Joe Allen; hype train or smoke screen?

Positioning: So on FFS i've seen Joe Allen continuously talked about as being 'in the hole' and playing as a #10. Having not seen any Stoke games this season and having no intention in doing so I decided to look at it exclusively through Squawka & FourFourTwo stats and draw my own conclusions from there. (For this i'm just looking at the Sunderland game, unfortunately)
The first thing I looked at was where he received his passes and his touchmap.

      Passes received: http://i.imgur.com/4dw4vtq.png
      Touchmap: http://i.imgur.com/ZTC7dGq.png

So as you can see with your very own eyes, Joe Allen received a lot of his passes in deep, wide areas, probably(but not confirmed) during the build up phase of Stoke's attack. Very little volume in central areas and particularly in front of the opposition penalty areas. So, why was this?
Why is he not an orthodox number 10?

Here's where Xherdan Shaqiri received his passes: http://i.imgur.com/Jme0Sga.png
      And Arnautovic: http://i.imgur.com/V2IpEtC.png
      And Bony: http://i.imgur.com/ft3B0wZ.png

You can see here Xhardan Shaqiri frequently drifting infield and receiving the ball 'in the hole' and taking up a lot of Joe Allen's supposed ball volume 'in the hole', but Marko Arnautovic features exclusively from the left flank and doesn't drift in like Shaqiri does. Wilfried Bony sees a lot of direct action from Butland but also like to drop in a bit to receive the ball and contribute to the build-up in wide areas.

But is Joe Allen a deep-lying playmaker? Well, no.

      Glenn Whelan pass map: http://i.imgur.com/1OBZ6mA.png

Here you can see Glenn Whelan as the true ball circulation master than he is, seeing a lot of ball volume in a deep midfield position like Joe Allen used to do at Swansea and to an extent at Liverpool. Geoff Cameron's passmap is similar. But it's somewhat of a surprise that Joe Allen isn't being used deep, maybe that's down to the exclusion of Imbula or Bojan, but unfortunately i'm not Mark Hughes so I don't know.

TL'DR: Overall it's hard to see here where his positioning as 'a number 10' comes from, except his listing in the team sheet.

Creativity: Is Joe Allen a creative #10(we'll pretend he still is to keep early knee-jerkers happy) or a goalscoring #10?

      Here's Joe Allen's passmap: http://i.imgur.com/1ybxjGO.png

So here his passing doesn't inspire much creativity or incision with a lot of ball circulation involved with a couple of edge of the box passes there to keep you a little bit excited. Compare this to an Ozil or a de Bruyne(it's unfair I know but this was Sunderland ffs) and it fails to give me even a half chub when looking at his assist potential.

But he's on corners right? Maybe Shawcross will sneak a goal or something?

Sorry FFS set-piece takers tab guy; Shaqiri has taken 13 corners over the last four GWs, Bojan 3, Allen just 2. I think that's enough evidence to say that he takes them infrequently and that the Swiss maestro is taking his thunder once more. Sorry to disappoint.

      Goal threat:

But Parm, Allen has 100 goals in his last 2 minutes, he'll keep scoring right?

Well maybe, it's always hard to tell. Allen isn't a serial shooter like a Theo Walcott but he seems to be getting in some good positions when he does roam forward from his deep-ish midfield spot.

Joe Allen shotmap so far this season: http://i.imgur.com/0Ne8zw0.png

Allen also ranks 21st in open play xG which is mightily impressive considering his shooting infrequency. What worries me though is whether or not Allen will be getting into those positions in games that Imbula or Bojan start. He clearly has had a little more license to get forward with Geoff Cameron taking up a deep defensive role and Glenn Whelan also in support whether Hughes is happy with this balance of feels a more attacking presence is required is unknown but i'd be both excited and worried by this article: ( http://www.stokesentinel.co.uk/mark-hughes-gives-stoke-city-outcast-giannelli-imbula-encouragement-over-future/story-29815386-detail/story.html ).

Said article suggests "it could be later rather than sooner before he[Imbula] returns to the frontline" but also that the record signing's reaction to being dropped was “very good, excellent in fact" after taking the troubled midfielder out of the firing line.
Bojan floating about will always be an issue and he or Imbula could be inserted at any time over the next few weeks reducing Allen's appeal further.

      Overall verdict: Smoke screen

Great article...reckon Mark Hughes will keep the same front 4 for a couple of reasons. 1. Stoke lost heavily the first few games and something had to change. After Allen switched further forward in the last 3 games they begun to find some joy in their results. 2. Why change when tide is turning and results are coming in? 3. Stoke has great fixtures for the next 5 out of 6.

He's certainly in a weird situation, not playing like a #10 or even a box-to-box midfielder but he's getting in great positions in the box almost out of no where. I would love it if a Stoke fan could confirm or deny my purely statistical based 'findings'.

          Interesting contribution.

You'd probably consider a switch from Capoue to Allen as a sideways move then - but it's likely to be a profitable one even if Allen's form diminishes.

The other option I was considering for my #5 was Barry at 4.7 and 2 goals in 8 games for an average of 3.3 ppg.

I'd just say f-it and go for a proper cheapy like Fletcher or Marney(might drop to 4.3 soon I heard) UNLESS Capoue is your fourth mid. I know that £0.5m isn't much now but when you'll need it you'll thank me for it not being tied up in your 5th bench mid.

Stats are not important it's football and the guy is on form , confident and with good fixtures , we know he's not what so called a big star but his effort is respected and the price gives you other options ,, so even if he blanks he might be a good bench warmer too you know .... nice info tho

          1. Good Euros, Good transfer, Improved motivation
          2. Slightly forward position, confidence on the back of 5 goal run
          3. Cheap as chips for a nailed starter + non-defensive (i won't think he is very attacking, but more potential than say fletchers/barrys)
          4. Those fixtures and quality attacking team mates in Arnu/Shaqiri/Bony

Have to agree. He isn't a 10 but is a CM in a 433 that is more involved in the attack than the other CM's. Some seem to think this makes him a #10, its just not the case. Still, for 4.8 in a decent team that is improving its not bad.

Great post. Yeah. Stats are important. So does form. I did a bit of searching for Joe Allen's stats on Whoscored and personally his passes per game, key passes per game, and shots per game didn't really excite me but that's for 8 games. Didn't really look at it deeper for the past 3 games where he started scoring.

For the next few good games for stoke, if they stick with the current team, I believe he'll score a few goals but don't expect him to continue his scoring streaks. Historically, he's not a scorer nor assist-guy, he's more of a build-up player, for Wales, Liverpool and Swansea. But based on current form and fixtures, I'll take a punt at him. For the price of 4.9, he won't do much harm to my team overall.

Also, be aware of Arnatouvic and Shaqiri. It might be the two of them who will score points instead of our Welsh Xavi.

(Hey, that's a good point. Allen is a Xavi and not a Messi. =P)

            not worried.
got a spare transfer so am going to take the price rise much as i did with Capoue. Never started Capoue but sold for Allen and got a .3m profit.
Can see myself starting him with his form and Stoke's fixtures for the next few weeks and another goal or two should see a decent profit when I sell him.

he seems a bit like national colleague ramsey. arriving late rather than playing very advanced.
in a funny way i kind of feel half his success right now is coming from him being joe allen, the "ah it's only ray parlour" effect. maybe the league will wise up to him now, he's a goal threat, he only wasn't before as he was a dm.
i recall at swansea he had a couple of months under rodgers where he was used as an attacking mid and scored a couple

Having only missed one stoke game this season, this pretty much covers it but I've still transferred him in for capoue. He's been out best player by a mile this season, and as the stats point out he is arriving late into the box and the ball is falling for him at the minute

But he is nailed in the line up at number 10 (on the team sheet at least) as since imbula has dropped out we have lost 1 in 4 and the manager, and he hasn't even made the bench in recent weeks. He also just doesn't seem to rate Bojan who has not played any minutes in the last 3. Hughes won't change the line up whilst we are getting results. So there's every reason super joes returns can continue, or at least he'll have the chance too.

            Good analysis.

I think you've hit the nail on the head about the lack of chance creation, he's not an Ozil-type player. Not on as many set-pieces as Shaqiri and not enough play in and around the box.

But i do feel you're too dismissive about the significance of the change in position.

It seems to me that he's perhaps mastered the late run into the box. All those shots in the box in that map are since the change in position, and he's produced similar end results 3 weeks in a row “Once is happenstance. Twice is coincidence. Three times is Lampard reincarnate”. Or something like that.

People have made the comparison to Capoue but his chances are less frequent and in less favourable positions
            https://i.gyazo.com/6443f88767d673ef875e9865f9d696d2.png

For me the question of sustainability comes down to 1. Whether Hughes continues to deploy him as he is currently 2. Will the opponents recognise his threat and be able to adapt

Guys, just be careful about blindly buying Allen. Certain people will pressurize you into buying him by saying stuff like he must be bought soon else his price will rise, get him now to make a profit blah blah, only because they too want a profit out of him. Get him only if you think he'll get you points and not to save cash / build TV etc.

That's fine. I'm basically referring to posts by certain posters who are suddenly Joe Allen'a biggest fans, but the have sinister intentions in getting more people to buy him, make a quick buck and get rid or worse con people into making bad substitutions. Blatantly obvious in one specific poster's case.

          Bench one:

          1) Lukaku @ Burnley
          2) Deeney @ Swansea
          3) Allen @ Hull

This is why I don't want to do Capoue to Allen. Capoue will still hold .3 of value and is still a good 5th mid. Out of those I'd have to say bench Allen.

Should be. As a side note, even though I have Antonio and am tempted to cash in on 0.1 profit, I'm keeping for the upcoming fixture.

Even if he has defensive duties he'd be more of a wing-back than a traditional right back so either way I'd expect him to get good chances vs. Sunderland.

Ooh, tough one. I have both and I'm probably selling Redmond this week. But honestly it's a bit of a toss-up, Redmond has the form (even if it doesn't always translate into points) but Antonio the fixture.

My guess is as good as yours mate but I've read that Arbeloa is out for 2 more weeks and Byram out too. With no Cresswell or Masuaku to play LWB for a 3-5-2 it may well be 4-4-2 with Antonio RB just out of no other players to fit the system. Unless Norvdeit went RB and someone like Ogbonna LB but I can't really see that.

Thats not true, I actually wanted to keep Antonio, however im not prepared to take the price drops.
It is how I always play around this time of the season, it is a strategic move based based on evaluating finances
compared with likely points. There may be short term pain, however the long term gain of extra finances should
outweigh any point shortfall, if there indeed is any.
May not be everyones way of playing, but thats how I do thinngs

I play a very similar game; balance point returns with long term financial gain. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, but it always makes a profit. When DGW's come, we see the fruits of this labor.

Yes profits are the most predictable and maneagable part of the game, points on the other hand are far more unpredictable. Good management of finances always pays off. Buying good players often does not. Its a fine balance, which was broken last season due to a number of factors. Thankfully this season there is a return to normality

Agreed, normalized a bit. I think last year, everyone got Mahrez, Ali and Vardy at a very cheap price, and they returned points (and hence profits) for 20+ weeks.

Doubtless you'll dismiss this but according to my calculation 0.1 budget at this stage equates to around 3 points difference over the rest of the season to a good manager. Assuming the 0.1 is used of course, it will gain you nothing in the bank.

It's not huge but it does make a marginal difference.

I guess the point is not the 0.1 on its own, but the overall strategy of maximising TV at this stage. Would equate to more than 0.1 over a number of players.

I would have no idea, even Einstein would struggle with it. But even if it is as low as you suggest, then thats still makes buying Allen over Antonio worth 12 ppoints assuming one goes up .2 and the other down

No, half that. You need to work on the basis of SV not TV unless you plan to keep players for a very long period.

"TV is vanity, SV is sanity".

Actually I don't think 3 points for 0.1 is a low estimate. Multiply it by 1000 to get to the 100m budget. At that rate you'd be scoring 3000 points over the rest of the season. 😕

The reason it's that high is because you have to calculate compulsory spend and voluntary spend differently and you need more from the voluntary spend than you can expect from the compulsory spend. But that's enough explanation, no-one will be interested anyhow. 😕

Last season prior to the DGW34, i railed my ML leader by 52 pts. I had a SV of 107.1 to his 103.8. Result: I cut the lead down to 6 points, as I could afford 3 more big hitters than him, all of which got hauls.

Many different ways to play this game 🙂

...which could also be interpreted as you selecting players that scored higher than his (in which a dollop of luck is involved). Those higher scoring players won't always be the higher priced options. I remember a couple of seasons back Hazard being the runaway captain poll leader in a big DGW. He scored 5 points.

Anyway, believe it or not I'm not denigrating the money strategy. It's an element of the game. I don't think it's as deciding as some do but neither is it to be ignored. The only difference is that I have done some work to try to put a rough value on it.

Depends what strategy are you employing...some would like to take adv of TV which would payoff in the second half of the season where transfer are going to stabilize...some would look at the fixtures (WH got Sun at home) and decide to hold for a couple more weeks.

Exactly this. For example, I've sold Caspoue to Allen to bank the 0.4 and will make at least 0.1, and also get a player in better form with great fixture. Capoue had peaked imo. At the same time, I'm letting the Austin bandwagon go for now, as I feel Deeney is worth giving another shot to, with swa and HUL coming up.

I have a problem and it that my main rival does 8 points regularly and is STILL ahead of me by about 50 points.

              de Gea/Pickford
Walker, Williams, Kone, Holebas (legend), McAuley
              Sanchez Allen Puncheon Antonio Son
              Aguero Austin Diomande

Just brought Allen and Austin in tonight for a 4 point hit. I want Bellerin, Walcott and Lallana for my next transfers.

Can I take a further 4 point hit to bring in Walcott for Puncheon this week so that I have him for the next two easy fixtures? My rival has him and I am hoping that doing this, despite the hit, 1) will cancel his differential (he has Walcott) and 2) he will pay for himself with 2 easy fixtures.

I'm considering the hit as well but am not ready to rid Antonio or Sterling. Rival has Walcott and Ozil, Ive got Sanchez.

I probably won't at the end of the day due to Sterling& Antonio fixtures.

Guys 2.1 itb 1 transfer and game week score of 45

My team is as follows for the coming game week 9

                  Foster

                  Williams amat walker

                  Walcott sterling Antonio firmino Capoue

                  Costa aguero

                  Bench jakupovic valencia McAuley diamande

With 2.1 itb and free transfer what changes woukd you make diamande never gets used just a cheap option to free up cash for starting 11 all your help would be grand.

Thinking a liverpool defender for McAuley aLao as fixtures look well maybe lovren or clyne.

Williams to an Arsenal defender? I think people have got a good impression of Liverpool's defence after tonight and I don't see why, it is unreliable.

                    Capoue to Allen or Stanislas?

                    Antonio to Siggy or Arnie?

Look at Arsenal's fixtures. Besides, IF you go McAuley to Clyne then you are going to spend £1m anyway so why not do £1m and go from Williams to Mustafi or Monreal?

Any news on Toby's injury? Expected to be fit for the weekend?

                    Ta.

Haven't seen much. Won't play vs Leverkusen for sure

I've noticed this a few times before, it takes a while to update for some reason. Not sure exactly how long it'll be.

Antonio --> arnie ft done, feels right but may regret it given cresswells ban & possible formation shuffle. Fixtures were the deciding factor.

Arnie has same goal threat stats as Bony last 5. Allen blows them both away lol. Might change in your favour though

You can go to the Britannia and drown your sorrows, if the pub near home park is still there, so long since was there

So if Alderweireld is injured, will it be Dier as CB and then Wanyama taking over as holding midfielder do we think?

Haven't watched Hull games or MoTD recently. How's Snoddy look? Still a threat from set plays and just unlucky or has he fallen off the trail. So many people offloading him even with his decent fixtures. Fickle game we play.
