Fantasy Football bandwagons involve the mass transferring in of a particular player, who often is likely to have registered an excellent points haul the week before.

Sometimes Fantasy managers can be so desperate to draft them in that they are willing to take a hit to secure their services. But for some, doubts remain.

Am I chasing Points? Is their explosive points return a one off? These are the common questions that vex those that love this game.

Bandwagons this season

Here I aim to find out whether targeting bandwagons can lead to success or failure.  For this analysis I have taken the most transferred in player each Gameweek then looked at the points they immediately offered their new owners.

Screen Shot 2017-03-07 at 15.12.54

Results

  • If we captained the most transferred player each week we would have 302 points, which does not beat my own captain score so far of 360 but does beat a few of my mini-league rivals, who are in the top 75,000 in Fantasy Premier League’s overall rankings.
  • Notable bandwagons flops were  Tottenham’s Heung-min Son in Gameweek 8 and Manchester City’s Ilkey Gundogan in Gameweek 11. Etienne Capoue  in Gameweek 5 provided an immediate return. But who would have captained the Watford midfielder that week?
  • The average points scored by the most transferred player over a season is 5.59, which indicates it’s a much reduced risk to captain or take a hit on bandwagons.
  • We would have a much better team value if we purchased every bandwagon.
  • On five occasions the most transferred player of the week delivered a double digit score.

Conclusion

What was learned from this analysis? Bandwagons can be hit and miss when looking short term but over a season having a player that scores 5.59 PPG in our team is not too bad.

The most interesting theory is that it’s less risky to captain a bandwagon than it is to captain a player you feel is due a big score or who has low ownership but appealing underlying statistics. We could conclude that in the remaining weeks of the season when we hunt differential captains to catch mini league rivals simply handing the armband to the most transferred in player could be the ideal option.

Ahead of Gameweek 28 it is worth noting that Fernando Llorente of Swansea, with 99,000 new owners, is currently the biggest bandwagon, closely followed by Liverpool’s Sadio Mane, on 92,000 transfers in.

Definitley Ibra to Lukaku...Considering its a tough week could work out.

Personally I'm keeping Sterling but ditching Aguero GWK 29 - The Argentine is just too pricey while his English team mate offers consistent returns for around 5m less.

Stan has to go- I've removed myself....turning into a money pit.

      My team for GW 28:

      Jaku
      Baines Mcauley
      Antonio Phillips Firmino Siggy mane
      Llorente lukaku

Bench: yoshida, rose, graban, Cahill, cech.

10 ft and already did a -4 hit. 4.3 itb

Please I need help, what should I do now for gw28 and the game weeks coming after?

Maybe stay with 9-10 players playing, or I could go for Coleman or another option.

      Thanks ...

He does. Nice and simple for the reader but lots of great complex research behind the scenes. Means he takes the strain on the research and analysis and makes it easy for the reader to digest.

as you are unlikely to only get a bandwagon for one week it would be better to see how they did over the following few weeks.
Fortunately I have done this a few times over the past couple of seasons and, taking mids and forwards it pays off a lot more than it doesn't. Even more so if you ruled out the obvious one week lucky scores

Anyone have any stats on how well Hull are defensively under Marco Silva at home.

Haven't got a post gwk 21 home stat breakdown v home before that.

But in general under Silva they are conceding less goal attempts and crucially far less headed goal attempts. They've really tightened up there. Still conceding lots of chances but less than before and as said those headed ones have gone down.

I would like to review historical fpl data but not sure best place to get it. I had a few ideas regarding member stats trends too but to be fair I think that members datas best left for member articles

Interesting that since GW18 the success rate of the major bandwagon has been much higher than previously - only 3 blanks since then. A sign that fewer of the casuals are playing now so transfers are more considered?

Ok stats for kun against stoke
    1. City has won last 3 matches against stoke each time scoring four goals
    2. Start of season aguero scored 1goal vs sun followed by brace against stoke in gw2
    3. Indi and johnson not available for stoke
    4. Last and the best.....aguero has 8 goals against stoke which is 3rd best for him....newcastle 11 and 10 vs spurs

So keeping my fingers crossed for history to repeat

Current front 3 of Lukaku, Kane, and Gray with a total of 9 or 10 players active for this week. Anyone considering a hit to swap Kane in/out for Llorente to field a full team this week?

    A)Kane > Llorente week 28 (-4), Gray > Kane week 29
    B)Kane blank week 28, Gray > Llorente week 29

    1. Kenneth Tang

      A) seems not good. Do you think of selling any non-playing midfielder to Mane/Firm/Cout/Siggy/Antonio/Lanzini/King or any non-playing defender to Mawson/Olsson? Selling Kane is justified only if you think Llorente is the best captain.

      B) better option, and will suggest to buy Gabbiandini instead

So now, after navigating my way through the blanks in GW28 (I'll field 9), my focus (transfer wise) has turned to those with 2 DGW's between now and the end of the season. We firmly believe GW 37 will be the big one, so Wild Card will take care of that, but it's also very likely that Man U, Arsenal, & Southampton will all have a double gameweek sometime before GW37 too.

So who do we want from these sides...
Man U - Ibra is the obvious target when back from suspension, Valencia is the other who stands out for me, but other than that?? Possibly Mkhi?? It looks like any 3rd Utd player would be a strictly 1 week punt.

Arsenal - With the current state of things at Arsenal I honestly cannot see anyone one who I'd want for any longer than 1 week other than Sanchez. Walcott may well emerge as a viable option.

Southampton - I think the Saints might offer up a few options, Gabbi is the stand out one for me, I'll be getting him in for GW30. Yoshida has started the last 8 and at 4.3 is cheap enough to be bench fodder, the same can be said for Stevens (4.0) who has started the last four. He's also worth monitoring. The other two I'll look at are the hit & miss pair of Tadic & Redmond.

So all in all, I don't think there's a great deal of hot options available, 5 or 6 players at a push.

Pocky I tend to agree with you on this. But I am sure a few players will suddenly emerge. Man U seem to be quite a dull team. Ibra the go to then their defence, but can you trust investing in the likes of Mata, Pogba, and Mkhi?

You might pluck for Ozil or Walcott at Arsenal plus a defender but this has proved very hit and miss in the past.

Saints have Gabbiadini. Redmond might be a shout. Yoshida a great value buy, possibly a full back.

None of these teams seem to have 2 great dbgw fixtures. But we will see how it unravels.

Planning on a -4 hit to take in either Firmino or Mane for Alli (did Ibra for Lukaku). Which one would you choose???

    Current line up:

    Jaku/Heaton

    Baines/McAuley/Mee/Amat/Walker
    Siggy/Morrison/Alli/Sanchez/Capoue
    Costa/Lukaku/Carroll

Isn't this obvious? I'm really not menaing to be rude here.

Doesn't everyone study crowd theory at school?
For a gentle summary reminder, the number of sweets in a jar is (with a good enough sample size) the average of peoples guesses.

As realised by Poodle, it should also improve over time as those who play for longer are more experienced and generally doing well.
