Mohamed Salah marks his Liverpool debut with a goal, but Brighton’s main man Anthony Knockaert is injured as the pre-season schedule gathers pace.

Elsewhere, a Dwight Gayle double does the trick for Newcastle United, and Jonathan Walters opens his account for Burnley.

Here’s the run-down on last night’s action.

Wigan Athletic 1 Liverpool 1

Mohamed Salah scored on his Liverpool debut as more members of the Reds’ potent midfield were given their first pre-season outing at Wigan Athletic.

The summer signing from Roma, who has already tempted 11.4% of Fantasy Premier League managers to invest in him, struck on the stroke of half-time when he converted a Roberto Firmino pass.

Manager Jurgen Klopp fielded Salah, Philippe Coutinho and Adam Lallana in an attacking first-half team set up in a 4-3-3, with goalkeeper Simon Mignolet also handed his first start as the Reds upped their preparations for the new campaign.

Liverpool’s shape was difficult to assess, with Klopp clearly allowing for fluidity in his formation. Georginio Wijnaldum appeared to take up the number six role as a deep lying midfielder, with Ben Woodburn and Lallana also dropping alongside him at times. Roberto Firmino played as the central attacker, although he swapped with Salah throughout the first period.

A completely different side took to the pitch of a second half that even Klopp was forced to admit was ‘a little bit boring, to be honest’.

Of rather more interest to Fantasy managers were local reports that Liverpool, as well as upping their bid for RB Leipzig midfielder Naby Keita, are in advanced talks with Hull City over the signing of left-back Andy Robertson.

Should Robertson make the move, the 10.5%-owned James Milner’s place at left-back will no longer be assured, particularly as Klopp will have to rotate his squad to cope with the demands of Champions League football. Milner would, however, be expected to retain a starting role initially.

Liverpool XI First half: Mignolet; Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Klavan, Flanagan; Wijnaldum, Lallana, Woodburn; Salah, Coutinho, Firmino.

Liverpool XI Second half: Karius; Gomez, Stewart, Lovren, Milner; Henderson, Grujic, Chirivella; Solanke, Sturridge, Origi.

Brighton And Hove Albion 2 Fortuna Dusseldorf 0

Star man Anthony Knockaert lasted only ten minutes of Brighton’s first pre-season match.

The 8.5%-owned midfielder limped off after receiving treatment to an injury sustained in a heavy tackle and later left the ground on crutches, his leg encased in a protective boot.

Hughton confirmed post-match that the Frenchman had suffered an ankle injury.

“It’s too early to tell at the moment. He’s a little bit sore and got some swelling on his ankle. We’ve had incidents in the past with Anthony where we thought it was going to be bad, but he’s always made good recoveries. We hope it’s the same with this one, but we certainly won’t know anything about the injury for another couple of days.”

Should Knockaert be out for a lengthy spell, it will be a bitter blow for manager Chris Hughton, who will have to start the Seagulls’ top-flight campaign without the Championship player of the year.

The injury overshadowed a 2-0 win for Brighton, with two late goals in as many minutes from Jamie Murphy and Tomer Hemed securing the victory.

Scots winger Murphy cut inside to open the scoring in the 77th minute before Hemed doubled the lead, the Israeli striker scoring from an Oliver Norwood cross.

Hughton used a 4-4-1-1 formation throughout, handing new signing Markus Suttner his first start at left-back, while defender Connor Goldson made his first appearance since heart surgery in the second-half team.

Fellow new boy Mat Ryan didn’t figure – the Australian keeper has been given extra time to recover from his participation in the Confederations Cup.

Brighton XI First half: Maenpaa; Bruno, Duffy, Dunk, Suttner; Knockaert (LuaLua 10), Stephens, Kayal, March; Gross; Murray.

Brighton XI Second half: Maenpaa; Rosenior, Goldson, Huenemeier, Bong; Murphy, Sidwell, Norwood, Skalak; Towell; Hemed.

Shamrock Rovers 0 Burnley 4

All three of Burnley’s summer signings started the match in Dublin, with veteran Jonathan Walters marking his debut with an early goal.

The Republic of Ireland international scored after just nine minutes, having been put through by fellow new boy Jack Cork, in a team that also featured former Leeds United full-back Charlie Taylor.

Walters was then substituted after just 33 minutes, although to date there has been no explanation as to why, as Burnley had to wait for three second-half goals to confirm their superiority.

Ashley Barnes made it two, curling home after collecting a Matthew Lowton long ball, before Robbie Brady hit the third following good work by Stephen Ward.

Sam Vokes, the 6.0-priced striker who finished last year in fine form on the way to a ten-goal season haul, rounded off the scoring, albeit in fortuitous fashion.

The Welsh international attempted to duck out of the way of a Jeff Hendrick half-volley, only for the ball to hit him on the back and go in off the bar.

Burnley XI First half: Heaton; Darikwa, Tarkowski, Mee, Taylor; Defour, Cork; O’Neill, Gudmundsson, Walters (Agyei 34); Gray.

Burnley XI Second half: Pope; Lowton, Anderson, K Long, Ward; Ulvestad (Agyei 78), Westwood, Hendrick, Brady; Vokes, Barnes (C Long 85).

Heart of Midlothian 1 Newcastle 2

Dwight Gayle started pre-season where he left off in the Championship, grabbing both goals in a fine first-half display at Tynecastle.

The striker was the Magpies’ top scorer last season, hitting 23 goals from 26 starts, and his brace will have pleased the 11.8% of Fantasy managers who have currently made him their cut-price third forward.

New signing Florian Lejeune was given a run-out in defence for the second half by coach Rafa Benitez, but it was a returning midfielder who caught the eye.

Siem De Jong was back at the club following a loan spell with PSV Eindhoven, and he picked out Gayle with a fine pass for the first goal, part of a fine performance that suggested the Dutchman has a point to prove to Benitez.

De Jong played the No 10 role in a 4-4-1-1 formation from Benitez.

Jonjo Shelvey provided the assist for the Magpies’ second, picking out Gayle with his corner kick.

Matt Ritchie, who played a key role in leading Newcastle to the Championship title, played no part as he continues to recover from a groin operation back in April, while defender DeAndre Yedlin did not feature following his international exertions for the USA.

Newcastle XI First half: Elliot; Clark, Lascelles, Mbemba, Haïdara; Aarons, Shelvey; Diamé, Atsu, De Jong; Gayle.

Newcastle XI Second half: Elliot; Lejeune, Dummett, Mbemba (Hanley 62), Haïdara (Colback 62); Gamez, Shelvey; Diamé (Armstrong 62), Perez, De Jong; Mitrovic.

A few tasty strikers at 6.5.

    Gayle
    Deeney
    Austin

Any of those take your fancy?

Avoid that price range imo. Austin could be decent but not assured of game time.
I need to see something from Gayle before I pick him. Have been burned by promoted 6m strikers 3 yrs in a row lol

He's a legend at the club but who knows how the new coach rates him..
If assured of minutes, he's a decent choice. On pens etc. But I would structure my team differently cause if he doesnt work out, then what? So few attractive options in that price range.

If Gayle looks like he's being entrusted to lead the line by Rafa - remember there was interest in Abraham, so some doubt there - then I think I will be seriously looking at him, but I do have Ritchie in my initial draft - on all set pieces and pens swings it for me. But could all change for sure.

Yeah decent ppg last season, and also on corners from the left occasionally.

I'm undecided, I do feel like there's more end product about Bertrand, though Cedric's stats do suggest the opposite.

Struggling to choose between KDB, Alli and Eriksen. My feeling is that spurs will struggle adapting to the new stadium, so aren't good to invest in early (Kane is a slow starter as it is, anyway) and City have got off to blistering starts the last few seasons, so KDB might be the way to go?

    Opinions?

Easy to downgrade KDB to Alli or Eriksen if things don't work out.

KDB looks like the most nailed City mid without being rotated too often by Pep. He's just too expensive though so I've gone for Sane. I'm also going to get one of Eriksen and Alli and stay away from Kane saving cash but still having Spurs attacking cover.

Hadn’t considered going full on 4-3-3 but that lineup looks really strong.

      8/10

But close to a 10/10 for a 4-3-3 formation. Not sure how it could be improved. Maybe just watch out for Sane’s game time.

It's fun to use when WC'ing, but I don't think it's very useful at the start of a season when you have a lack of recent data. And no, it can't predict the emergence of players such as Mahrez. I'm happy to be corrected, however.

It's great! I'm a numbers guy and I actually use it a lot in my decision making. I also use a lot of betting sites for sanity checks. Ranked just outside top1k last season.

It's useful when deciding trades, optimising funds, and calculating how many hits to take. It also helps you identify weaknesses in your squad in the coming weeks.

As for GW1, much is up to you, bc it doesn't really have much data, but in my opinion identify some good value prospects (obviously not outliers though, that's just luck).

There was that period last year were Kun was fit, but still benched for Jesus.
Even thogh Kun and Jesus played together at the end of the season, some might feel there's a risk for Kun being dropped again. He also lost penalty duties (at least based on last season), and Pep loves to rotate

I disagree with this, one of his strengths is his pace to get in behind defenders. That space won't be there playing for United, teams will sit deep, especially at Old Trafford.

Agreed. Most of Lukaku's goals last season came when Everton had "already won" and vs careless defenses. IIRC, If you take away all of Lukakus goals last year Everton still finish 7th.

Dont love the United double up, and would go with a frontline of Jesus (on pens + cheaper) Kane and Laca.
Alli to Cout looks good too if u switch Kaku to Kane (not a huge fan of double ups early in the season)

Torn between A and B which offer different approaches. Which do you think is better please?

    A 4-4-2
    Foster
    Trippier Cedric Lindalof Daniels
    Willian Sane Coutinho Alli
    Lukaku Lacazette

    Myhill RLC Mee Abraham

    B 3-4-3
    Foster
    Trippier Cedric Lindalof
    Willian Sane Tadic Henderson
    Lukaku Lacazette Kane

    Myhill RLC Mee Dunk

Will King score less than his 16-goal haul due to being pushed back by introduction of Defoe?

If history is any indication, probably. He had scored about 16 goals his entire career before the last 6 months of the previous season. Granted, confidence and being utilized correctly matters a lot but I would imagine he drops off a little.
Defoe (or Stanislas) will most likely take penalty duties off him too.

Won't see the same output as last season, losing one point from goals will clearly impact his score. No clean sheets not really an issue (bournemouth conceded a lot, think like 17th in the league for goals conceded lol) but with Defoe in front of him it depends if he's in the 10 role or a support striker. More assists maybe

Just watched the scoutcast this morning (nice to see the chaps all agree with me that FPL have ruined the star of last season - Josh King - as an FPL asset by incorrectly making him a forward).

Did anyone understand what Mark was saying about Firmino being MORE appealing as a forward? I struggled to follow the logic.

Surely Jonty is right - he gets less points as a forward and so is LESS appealing.

Possibly him being the cheapest option, and having a nailed Liverpool striker for £8.5m. More BAPs also.

I think it's a cheap way into Liverpool attack , frees up a midfield slot and he's not the worst 3rd striker option and compares well with his price band.
Individually firmino might score less but he's a valuable chess piece

I think he meant more apppealing because he is a cheapish priced forward but we know how good he is still. I've got him in my team at min but my head is being turned by Josh King

I think he's a brilliant fire and forget 3rd option as striker.

The fundamental problem with Liverpool assets is that the points are shared around week by week.

Similarly, the third striker bracket only ever offers up a series of short term options

So by opting for Firmino as a season long striker, we can expect a ppg of approx 5-6pts and avert our weekly FT attention elsewhere.

Get the feeling that RF will run the defenders and allow Salah and Mane to exploit the space. 11g/11a least season, I expect the introduction of Salah to divert goals away from Bobby, though he may maintain the assists output.

Could be a differential which is crazy to think, being the top points scorer last season.

Although I see why this is the case, it seems more difficult to fit him in this time around with the way they've priced forwards. Basically, you can choose 2 of Kane, Lukaku and Sanchez and people are choosing the former 2.
Also, with Lacazette joining he may be considered a cheaper route into a high-scoring team.

Personally, I don't have him in but as a result, I am quite worried!
